Very few restaurants in Williamston are opened on Sundays in January. I called the RiverHouse and made a reservation. When we arrived, we discovered we had the whole place to ourselves. Nothing wrong with that. We sat next to the fireplace and really enjoyed speaking with Susan the owner/manager. I had one of their Bloody Mary's which was perfectly prepared. For our meals, D had the filet and said it was very good. I had the salmon, along with a bowl of French Onion Soup. Delicious. I understand they have a wonderful patio. If we are ever back in the area in the summer, you'll know where to find us. read more

This new place has a lot of potential. It is really nice inside and has a great patio section outside with a gazebo, large grass lawn and a view of the Red Cedar river. The perfect place for a small intimate wedding maybe? The owners did a fantastic job remodeling. Currently the menu consist of only sandwiches and wraps with dinner options to come once a chef is hired. They have a full bar inside. In the front entrance the RiverHouse Inn has more of a coffee and tea house atmosphere. The three of us each had a portabello wrap sandwich. It was made with baby bella mushrooms,wrapped in a spinach tortilla and served with house made potato chips. It was very good and reasonably priced for $5.95. It is an easy drive from MSU; a great place to take your visiting parents (actually have them take you!). I'll be sure to check them out when I return at Christmas. read more

I found the service and the environment to be completely relaxing and inviting. On our way home from a little road trip, we decided to stop in at a friend's recommendation for some dinner. It was a lovely evening and the charming atmosphere outside just contributed to the loveliness. Our server was warm and friendly. I asked the bartender to make me a mocktail, as I don't drink alcohol anymore, and she did such a fantastic job! The food was delicious. I would quickly bump the star rating up to 4 if the service had been a little better. Our server was swamped and while he did his best to deal with a bad situation, it did detract from our dining experience. We ordered a bottle of wine, Carmenere, with our meal. The wine was one of the least expensive on the menu but turned out to be a great choice! Here's a run down of what we ordered: -Onion Gratinée (excellent!) -Cesar Salad (needed additional dressing) -Salmon Cakes (great spicy remoulade sauce) -Roasted Red Pepper Alfredo with Shrimp (the shrimp were cooked perfectly!) -Cheesecake with mixed berry topping Because of the slow and distracted service, our waiter gave us a complimentary dark chocolate martini to enjoy with our cheesecake. We really did enjoy the food. It was well done and had interesting flavors. The price was fair and serving size appropriate. It is too bad they did not have appropriate wait staff for the number of tables seated. I blame the management for that, not the wait staff. The Riverhouse Inn would be a great option for a quite dinner, and once it gets warm there is a great view outside. read more

Three of us arrived at 4:30. We were the only ones there. We were asked if we had reservations and replied that we did not think we would need them at 4:30 in the afternoon. We were told you ALWAYS need a reservation in a condescending tone. Once we were seated the menu arrived and it was nothing like the one online. Most everything was really expensive! I'm talking $30.00 for baked chicken. If I'm in Chicago, Boston, NY... maybe. Rent is much higher there. Anyway, we were told the owner did not believe in putting the actual menu online so Yelp put one in. Does this person live in the Stone Age?!?!? I always check out the menu before I go someplace. I guess if I could have gotten past the rude greeting and sticker shock I would have enjoyed the view. Can't rate the food because we had a drink and left. read more

I went back to the Riverhouse last weekend after being away for a while. I have to say that the new menu seems really good. After some mental wrangling I decided to go with the lobster pasta ($12) with the clam chowder add-on ($3). It was really really tasty! It was essentially a lobster mac and cheese with huge chunks of lobster meat and a whole claw on top of the pasta! I am a big guy but after you toss in the fresh bread, I couldn't finish the plate! Thankfully it warmed up nicely the next day. Add in a pint of craft beer for $5 and I was out of there for $20 + tax & tip. Quite a good deal, I thought. The only criticism I have is that I wish that they would launch a website so that I can read about the food! Nevertheless, the place is definitely worth the trip to Williamston! It is a charming old building with a gorgeous patio. I was very impressed with our server, he met and sat us immediately and provided the best service throughout our meal. He recommend the crab cake sandwich and tomato creme soup. We both ordered this absolutely LOVED it! The presentation, quality, and price fit the meal. Definitely coming back. read more

We had a family dinner there with multiple tables for a reservation of 4 pm. Some of our party was late - and the manager was warned of this at the time of reservation. The manager was complaining to those that had already arrived about the ones that were late. Those that were late were informed that the manager was irritated and talking openly about it. MOOD RUINED ON A BIG DAY. The roasted chicken was overcooked. I would have preferred a rotisserie chicken from Meijer. Thanks for ruining this day for the person in honor. I am quoting her words. We spent a ton of money there and were just met with saltiness. Also - there were intense paint thinner fumes on the patio. I don't know if it was from the restaurant or the auto place next door, but it killed the ambiance. One last thing. My brother-in-law tried to order cheesecake and was told, "I don't know, with the time constraint." What time constraint? We were not informed of a time constraint when we made the reservation. We were willingly out of there at 6:30 pm after appetizers, dinner, and dessert. NEVER AGAIN until that manager is fired. read more

Love the Bloody Mary specials on Sundays--great taste and only $3.00! The food is quite lackluster unfortunately. I've tried several dishes including calamari (shouldn't be easy to screw up!) but the food kind of takes reheated. Very cute place. They have a nice outdoor seating area that is nice except the bees but that didn't take away from the good food., I had the vegetarian portobella wrap that was excellent and their homemade potato chips are the best i've had in a while. I can't decided if I should give the RiverHouse Inn three or four stars. Our meal was good, overall, but there were many little things that kept my visit from reaching a four-star restaurant experience. We stopped in the week between Christmas and New Years to take my wife's grandmother out to a nice dinner as part of her Christmas gift. The place was quiet and nearly deserted during the dinner hour. I imagine most people were still working through holiday leftovers. The place in in a converted house on the Red Cedar river. They have a nice looking Beer Garden in the back overlooking the river and a couple rooms upstairs available for private parties. Our server was pretty good. He was attentive but did not have a solid grasp on the dink and food specials. However, he did not hover and our food was plated expertly between course to give us enough time to converse and digest. The food was a bit hit and miss. Our appetizer (whitefish dip--YUM!) and salads were tasty but out entrees were a little off. Grandma's steak was over cooked. She asked for medium rare and got nearly medium well. I have a hard time forgiving this since RiverHouse is placing itself in the upper echelon of restaurants in the area. My wife comment that her polenta tasted a little off. My stuffed Shrimp were quite good, but the plate came out with a little too much mashed potatoes. Other things to note: several times through out the meal the kitchen staff walked through the dining room. Not something I would mind, but the cook (or who ever he was) had on grubby jeans and filthy sneakers. Not something you would expect to see in a high-end place. A mop buck was pushed through the dining room as well. I understand that the place is small, but this is unacceptable for the menu prices, in my opinion. Have your cooks dress like they are working at four-star establishment and wheel the mop bucket around the building next time. I got the feeling like this was the "B squad" and the regular staff was off for the night. I would try the place again. There is definitively a lot of potential. Next time we will come on a weekend. read more

I agree with the person who said this place has potential. It does, but it has some big flaws that seem to be a regular feature with restaurants in the Greater Lansing area. The ambiance is very nice. We sat outside on a lovely patio that overlooks the Grand River. It was very pretty and peaceful and the patio furniture is extremely comfortable. They also did a good job of providing enough space between the tables so you aren't too close to other guests. BUT, we were absolutely eaten alive by the mosquitoes. Our waitress offered bug spray, but somehow that being sprayed near my food was not very appetizing. The waitstaff seemed OK. A bit better than what we are used to in this area but still not exuding knowledge and confidence about food and wine. This is a common issue we see in this town--they don't have professional waitstaff; they have people who wait tables. I thought our waitress was friendly and attentive but seemed to be more concerned with her attire (tight, tight clothing and long fake nails) than with being a menu/wine expert. Not a problem per se....but I get the distinct impression that Riverside is *trying* to pass as fine dining, but the waitstaff is just a cut above Applebees. Food. Wow, the appetizer (savory cheesecake) was out-of-this-world fantastic. We nearly licked the plate. The crackers that accompanied it were a little stale but it didn't register because the cheesecake was SO good. The wine selection was nice and I thought reasonably priced. The menu was a bit disappointing. It was very large, but didn't offer many "interesting" selections. Bread was so-so, with a nice oil dipping sauce; salads were pretty standard and fresh tasting. However, the overall menu lacked creativity and pizzazz. Nothing jumped out to me as a "must have." Pretty run of the mill, ordinary choices. Lots of pasta--which usually is a bad choice. Lots of protein selections, but none were standouts. There were at least three different menu items (sea bass, salmon, and scallops) that you could order "broiled, baked or grilled" (like Red Lobster!!)--no sauces, no complementary paired side dishes (all the same), blah. My scallops were overcooked and stringy on the inside, and a little overly oily on the outside.....and they were not the larger scallops one usually sees at a fine dining establishment. My husband ordered the ribs (not sure why....), and they had a lot of goopy bbq sauce on top. They were ok. Nothing special. Both has grilled asparagus (which was excellent) and a potato on the side. Again--it wasn't a bad experience. It was just a cut above average in a very nice setting. I would absolutely love to see what this new chef is capable of...however, this menu is nothing special. Fine food does not need to be fancy, expensive, and fussy. It needs to be interesting and creative--with some attention to detail. I think the chef should concentrate more of pairing interesting flavors (like the appetizer--bleu cheese, apple, bacon cheesecake) and reduce the size of the offerings on the menu by half. Few things done well should be the goal. Also--fish shouldn't be on the main menu but offered as a special when in season. It's obvious that the fish is not fresh--and that is a huge no-no for a fine dining restaurant, and frankly, unacceptable given our location and the availability of fresh. So, it does have potential. I'll go back and give it a few more tries....but the only reason I will is because there is LITERALLY no other place to go. They have no competition except maybe Dusty's--and I'm "over" Dusty's and its high-priced geriatric dining choices. The bar is set very low in this town, and because of that mediocre establishments get treated with reverence that you would never see in a larger city. For fine dining that is truly creative and worth the wait, the money, and the effort, we still need to drive at least an hour. It's sad, and I don't understand it.
