After craving for dumplings, we found one place in North Vancouver. Red Chilli has great food and a lot of options. Their service was fast and efficient, maybe because it was only us in the restaurant. The environment is quiet with a nice view. We ordered dumplings , pasta with shrimp and a portion of meat and broccoli. Unfortunately, it was missing some sauce for the pasta and broccoli. We reuse the spicy sauce from the dumplings to use on the meat and vegetables dishes. It was good! Their portion serves 2 or 3 and we brought the leftovers. Great experience. read more

If you're looking for a Canadian Chinese meal of sweet & sour something with chow mein you could do worse. Rather pricey but good. But kid you were looking for Szechuan food, nobody here has a clue what that is. Szechuan province cooking understands chili's and heat like the best in the World, India, South America, Mexico . This is one of my favourite Szechuan restaurants in Vancouver. The reason I'm giving it a 4 star is because I've been coming here for years and their portions have been getting smaller and smaller. However, the food is still the tastiest Szechuan with lots of flavour and I'd highly recommend it! My favorites are the chicken or beef with black bean sauce, the Szechuan chicken (it's spicy), and their fried rice (which isn't too oily like some Chinese places). read more

As a lover of Chinese food,​ I had high hopes for this place after hearing some pretty rave reviews from family and friends. But quite frankly... I was left with a very meh feeling. First off, depending on what time of day you go, parking (a small area which is outside of the restaurant) is hard to get so if you can take Translink... take Translink because you'll probably save yourself the headache if it's a busier time. It doesn't have a Chinese restaurant feel... which is slightly disappointing but whatever... décor isn't everything. Also, there are dishes listed not on their physical menu but on their takeout and online menus​. So I think it is time for an update? And the prices have clearly changed but are not reflected on the takeout menus (they're about 2 years out of date) and were written on a piece of paper and taped into the restaurant menus​. So yeah... they really need to order some new menus​, both takeout and restaurant. As for the food we ordered... there were some hits and a few misses as well. We each ordered a dish to share between the five of us (ginger beef, chicken fried rice, sweet & sour pork, string beans in black bean sauce and beef with rice noodles). First off, they didn't have rice noodles, saying that they were out and instead gave us crispy noodles which they ok'd . That's something we should've been informed of at the beginning. The string beans were good but it's hard to mess those up. The sweet and sour pork was fine as well. And the ginger beef was more batter than meat (something I see someone else has experienced). The fried rice wasn't very fried and looked more like white rice with a bit of egg, chicken and peas. I might give this place another chance, I don't know. A bustling little Chinese restaurant with mediocre service and high prices. Stopped by for lunch and had the Mongolian beef with an added spring roll. Don't get the spring rolls, tasteless and flat. The Mongolian beef is quite tasty but for the price, very small portions. We were not even offered water after ordering spicy food and the waiter did not bother checking up on us at all but stood behind the counter looking down. The menu should be reprinted as every item has been tagged with a price mark-up. Fine for a few items but when you're repricing your whole menu - just send it to the printers. This place used to have the best Chinese food on the North Shore. I don't know what has happened over the last six months, but it is consistently poor. The menu hasn't changed much since they opened in the early 2000's. One would expect that it isn't exactly rocket science to keep following the same recipes. But, apparently, it is. The sauces have very little flavour to them, some are just overwhelmed by one ingredient. The House Special Ginger Beef, for example, used to follow pretty closely the standard Calgary Ginger Beef recipe. Now, it's all batter, little if any beef, and - I don't even know what, vinegar and food colouring? It makes my eyes water and my stomach churn. Very disappointing, especially given that they are charging $19-20 per dish, which is well above average in the Lower Mainland for mid level places. And, certainly, WAY, WAY, above the norm for low level places, which, sadly, Red Chilli now is. read more

I've been wanting to write this review since before Xmas. A friend and I were by ourselves this year on Xmas eve. So we decided that we'd keep each other company and have Chinese takeout. Her favourite place to order from is red chill Szechuan. Being that it was Christmas Eve, I thought it might be best to order earlier that day to avoid the rush. They do get very busy, so I would recommend ordering in advance. Very friendly and inviting staff took my order and congratulated my foresight to order in advance. Delicious food! I highly recommend the ginger beef and the lemon chicken. Reasonably priced and good portions. Have not tried eating in but would certainly consider it since the service was so good. read more

Ordered ginger beef. Basically just got skinny pieces of batter with no meat, texture of pork rinds. I tried to send it back and was told I was the first person to complain in 25 years and refused to exchange it for something else or a new batch! One of my faces on the North Shore. Went back this weekend with friends who also frequent the restaurant. Good thing, as they broke us out of our mold as I must admit, we had gotten stuck in ordering our favourite dishes over and over. They have a simple formula, great food at a really reasonable price. My only complaint is that, like many Asian restaurants, the wine list is limited and featuring very low end wines. Not a buggy, as wine does not always work with Asian food, but since my wife will not drink beer under any circumstances, we are always on the look out for restaurants with a nice wine at a decent price. A few dishes I highly recommend: the spicy wonton appetizers, the peppered chicken on dried spinach, the eggplant (before you scream out you hate eggplant, I was not the biggest fan either but this dish is delicious), and a new one we tried this time, mongolian beef. It was excellent. In Vancouver, Asian food is comfort food, and this place serves up great comfort food. Highly recommend. read more

The food was decent and the service was amusingly/infuriatingly poor. Showed up very early in the dinner hour, and were told to sit "by the window" (there are three window tables - one was already occupied). We picked the one that was farthest from the table with people, and sat down. Waited a couple of minutes, then got sharply told off from across the room, that we were seated at the wrong table. Of course, if they'd taken us to the table properly, we'd have known that we were meant to sit at a specific table, and not just either of the window tables. We wanted to stay at our chosen table, but were forced to move; apparently a big group was coming soon and they needed that table to form part of a bigger table. That aside, the restaurant is clean and organized, and they appear to be doing booming takeout business. Get the menu, and all the prices are covered over and re-written. Lol. Probably time to get new menus! Within a minute, the waitress is over to take our order. We haven't had a chance to go through more than the appies at this point, but she's quite insistent we order, so we say we will order our appetizers first, and then work on mains. Husband orders the BBQ pork appetizer, and told, "No BBQ pork. It causes cancer." WTF? Then he says, "Ok, I'll have pork dumplings," and she responds, "Too hard to make." At this point, I am choking back laugher. I have never been to a restaurant that flat out refuses to make things on their menu, just because they didn't feel like it. A couple of minutes later, the first of our appetizers, a soup, comes out, and we tell her we are ready to order our mains. "One minute," we are told. Over 15 minutes, 6 separate requests from us, and innumerable distractions later, we finally get our order in. It was like some kind of joke. I wondered if we were on one of those pranking shows. She would acknowledge us, then go take payment from another table, greet and seat a guest, answer the phone, hand over a take-out order, brush us off again, go to the back... on and on it went. We were pretty close to getting up and leaving at that point, but there was something cluelessly amusing about it, so we stuck around. Finally got our mains ordered, and the food came quickly. Overall, the food was fairly decent, if a little bit bland at times (and some sauces kind of thick/gloopy). It was fresh and satisfying, and the ingredients seemed to be good quality. We waited a long time for a table check and water refill, but at least we had our food to work on, so everyone was pretty happy. In the end, it was $90 before tip for 2 adults and 2 kids, which isn't exorbitant for a meal for four, but is about 50% more than the bill normally is for Chinese food at a mid-range restaurant. The punch line? As we were getting our coats on to leave, the large group finally showed up for the table that we weren't allowed to sit at. read more

I'd give it 3 stars if the food wasn't so inconsistent. Definitely fresh food, with lots of flavour. The problem is the excess oil, sugar, salt and thickening agents. We had 2 dishes that were VERY salty. One smelled burned and tasted off. When I told the waiter, he looked at me like there was something wrong with me.Took a sample back to the kitchen and returned saying 'it's okay, it's not burned' I replied that there was something really strong, very salty, to which he ignored my comment.. Did not offer to take the dish back or even discount it. Everything with a sauce just had too much thick oily goo, too much salt, too much sugar. The decor is excellent and the place seems very clean. They need some lessons in the kitchen and in customer service, then they could easily earn 4 to 5 stars. Service is not particularly good here but if you don't want to cross the bridge, this is a pretty good spot for Szechuan cuisine on the North Shore. I love the spicy eggplant dish and if you're lazy, they also deliver. Take out is another good option as seating is limited. My Grandmother and I tried this restaurant last night, since it is so close to our home and we have never been there before. We ordered the vegetable chow mien and the sweet and sour boneless pork. Both dishes came hot and looked delicious. We both enjoyed our meals and had seconds to our plates. Overall it was a good meal and we were satisfied. After about and hour and a half, we decided to go to bed. Both my grandmother and I had awful, stomach churning episodes all night and felt the need to dry heave and loose our stomachs. We both did not get very much sleep, good thing I have a day off today because I feel awful. I do not know what made us so sick from the meal, but it definitely effected us both and we will not be ordering again. Great food here, if you can get a table. That can sometimes be a challenge. Once you're in, try something a little different. Instead of sweet & sour pork, try the honey beef (but wait for it to cool down a bit before dipping in or you'll regret it). For Szechuan food on the North Shore, this is one of your best bets. read more

Worst service ever. Ordered delivery and after an hour of waiting (we live 3 blocks away). I called back and they said I wasn't the only order they were delivering. My wife and I ordered a delivery meal from Red Chilli a few nights ago. They were very busy, so delivery took about an hour - if you're hungry and need to eat right away, this restaurant currently doesn't have enough staff to suit your needs - but once the food arrived, it hit the spot. For Western-style Chinese food, though, I think overall there are better options in North Van for Chinese takeout and delivery. I have heard, though, that the dine-in experience at Red Chilli is much better, so take that into consideration. read more

Went with a large family group. Thy have a great menu of items. You can order spicy or not spicy. And you can also request no MSG. The food was delicious (we ordered 6 different dishes). The beef lettuce wraps are superb. The chow mein noodles were cooked just right. The black bean sauce on the beef and broccoli was the best I have tasted. We had delivery, though there was no menu on the website. The woman on the phone put me on hold twice for several minutes. We had dinner for 4 which included spring rolls (which were flat and flavourless, and only 2 plum sauce packets though there were 4 spring rolls), spicy wonton (which wasn't spicy at all), sweet and sour pork (which was chewy), green beans (which were over cooked and more spicy than expected - it was the only spicy dish), chicken chow mein (which was mainly noodles), and chicken fried rice (which wasn't rice at all but more chow mein noodles). Let me begin by saying the food here is actually really good. But I dine out a lot, and this place has THE RUDEST SERVICE of any restaurant I have ever been to! I understand that that is a harsh statement. But it's true! Here is what happened... We sat down and ordered spicy wontons, lettuce wrap, and fried vegetables. The wontons arrived in 5 min, and were tasty. But from here things went south! We waited almost 40 min after that for our mains. Then, a server approached us and said they could not serve us the lettuce wrap because the lettuce was rotten. I thought it would have been nice if they told us earlier as we had been waiting so long but I didn't say anything. She then opened a menu and showed me an item and said, "try this its just like lettuce wrap." She seemed very hurried, I was reluctant but very hungry, so I said, "Is it fast to prepare?" and she said yes and just walked away. A few minutes later she came with the replacement dish. A few bites is it turned out to really not be to my liking. Mostly the food there was good (not my first time there) but this dish was not good. And it was $17. So I called her over and apologized but said I really didn't like the dish and could I just have Szechuan shrimp because I know I like it. Well, she let out a sneer and walked away! 5 min later the manager walked up to our table shaking his head and said, "I don't know why you don't like that dish everyone else does!" and walked away!! Then the first lady came over and said they would be charging us 50% for the dish we sent back!! We ate maybe 15% of it tops! UNBELIEVABLE!! I then told them no way would I pay, I came for lettuce wrap and they waited 35 min to tell us they didn't have any - and could they just please bring the shrimp as we were starving!! (my four year old was getting pretty hungry too) She told us she would not bring the shrimp, because we might send that back too!!!! I honestly was wondering if somebody was going to pop up and tell us we were on candid camera at that point!! I WILL NEVER EVER EAT THERE AGAIN!! When my dining partner suggested getting Chinese food on the North Shore - I was skeptical to say the least. And the sharp decor and wine rack at this place didn't inspire confidence. I sat down and realized I was the only Chinese dude at this place. "Dui"! And they didn't give us chopsticks - they gave us forks! Double "dui"! And yes, of course I want rice with that - see these almond eyes?!?!? Left the ordering to the regular and we got a pretty good assortment of dishes (ma-po tofu, eggplant and garlic pork). Portions are pretty big (3 dishes was too much food for two people) and it's a bit pricier than your typical Chinese joint - but all the dishes were pretty solid. Bit oily - but not tamed-down hot like I expected judging by the cover. Not bad at all. And they didn't give me a fortune cookie - well-played, Red Chili. Well played. read more

This is probably one of the better Chinese restaurants on the North Shore, I would have given it 4 stars normally, but... The food is very good, and the setting is nice, although small inside. Not ideal for larger groups. I thought the service was actually ok, better than most Chinse places. The one major thing I did not like, is that they charge $5 for a medium sized bowl of steamed rice, whereas most have a per person rice charge with free refills. We needed 2 bowls for 2 people and spent $10 on rice. This alone makes it better as a take out or lunch place. read more
