I go here for work lunches, and would have no problem going here 1-2 times/wk. They have a lunch special where you get an appetizer/entree for 8 bucks. I've even brought coworkers here who've never had Thai food before and they loved it. They have vegetarian duck, tofu, and will double up the veggies for you if that's how you're feeling. We walked in and were greeted by a waitress saying "two?". We were seated at a tiny table for 2 when there were plenty of seats available. By the time out appetizers came out I asked to sit at a bigger table. The vegetable spring rolls were ok. The sauce it came with was amazing. My boyfriend loved the shrimp rolls (I don't eat seafood). He ordered the sirloin steak... Which turned out not to be sirloin nor the way he asked it to be cooked. It was a small portion for about $17. I got the red basil Singapore noddles for about $11. Delicious & spicy!!!! The service was ok. Sometimes I felt like I was ignored and bothering them. Really this review is like a 3.5 star, but, in the end, the wonderful waitstaff pulled it up. Food: The food was so hit or miss, I just didn't understand. Some dishes were 5+ stars, one salad we had was one of the most amazing things I have ever eaten. Some dishes were just plain bland and imperfectly cooked. We were here on a resturant.com certificate, so we ordered 2 apps and 2 entrees. For the first app we ordered the Yum Pla Muk, a spicy salad of crispy squid, mint, lettuce, chillies, herbs, lemongrass, red onion & carrots. The dressing was a spicy sour salty mix that included fish sauce. (I am a fish sauce devotee). It was one of the best things I have ever eaten in my life. The squid was perfectly cooked, the breading was crispy and not oily in the slightest. The salad itself was a perfect harmony of flavors, each one (mint, chillies, fish sauce, rice vinegar) identifiable, yet balanced with the others. The mix of textures from the vegetables made each bite scrumptious. Our next app was the steamed muscles, which had been recommended to us. A terrible disappointment! The muscles were overcooked and rubbery. The broth they were cooked in was bland and had almost a soapy aftertaste. My Fiance's entree was the Wok Eggplant made with Vegetarian Duck. I am on the fence about this one. The sauce was good, a little salty. The eggplant was a tad undercooked. On the plus side, the dish was very plentiful, and the vegetarian duck was very very good, though, it didn't really taste like duck. If you are looking for a meat substitute, this one wouldn't satisfy. If, however, you wanted a very flavorful, very innovative treatment of tofu, this was amazing. For my entree, I chose the Noodles Curry. This was also recommended to me, by a friend who suffers the same dilemma I always have in Thai restaurants: do I want the noodles, or do I want the curry?! The noodles curry was an excellent fusion dish. The curry was a bit Americanized, but very flavorful despite that. It is not a dish I would reorder, but that is because it made me realize that you noodles with curry, while tasty, isn't quite as good as picking noodles or curry, and getting a more authentic dish. On a side note, all 4 of our selections were listed as "spicy." However, there seems to be no consistency at Red Basil as to what "spicy" actually denotes. The muscles I would have said had absolutely no heat whatsoever, the salad was slightly spicy, the curry had some heat, but far less than most curries I have had elsewhere, and the eggplant was very spicy. Service: The restaurant was understaffed for the Friday night crowd. There were only 3 servers. To make matters worse, one waitress had to keep running outside to give the delivery guy his orders. That said, I have never, in my life, seen 3 people move so fast. They were also some of the most pleasant waiter and waitresses I have ever encountered. (And, since they were so shorthanded, we wound up being served by them all). While we did tip well, above the default 18% of the certificate, the time spent waiting for food was really frustrating. We were seated, and our wine bottle opened for us right away. After that, we waited a significant time to order, longer for our appetizers, and a bit for our entrees. They seemed to know how slow things were, and gave us a complimentary dessert (a tasty fried banana), but since we had to wait for that too, I would have gone without. Then again, I don't really love bananas, so I am biased. All-in-all, we will be back, but hopefully they can hire some more people! BYOB which I love read more

Great tasting food. Thai food the way it should be. Staff is always courteous, those sometimes the service can be slow. One side of the restaurant is warmer than the other so if you get cold easily sit to the left of the restaurant. The Basil chicken us fantastic and the best in the area. They have some great and unique appetizers, get the duck rolls, Peking duck in a wrap style, fantastic. Definitely going to keep coming back. read more

There is a $1 up charge for beef, and $3 for crispy duck. The service is always extremely friendly and very kind. They are the nicest people and it's great to see how much pride they have in their business. It really shows in their service and their food. Sometimes they give a free item like an appetizer or a thai ice tea. This time I got a thai ice tea and green curry with crispy duck. The Singapore noodles are delicious! If you like pork then I suggest ordering it with crispy pork and also adding beef. For appetizer I highly suggest the crispy shrimp wraps and the chicken curry puffs. As much as I love the food, I definitely recommend ordering takeout instead of eating there. The service is alright.. last time we were there the server brought us the wrong appetizer and we waited a long time for the right one.. in my experience a restaurant would usually leave the wrong appetizer on the table since they messed it up. Red Basil is a hidden gem. I didn't even know it existed until my friend brought me there for lunch one day! We go more often now for lunch since they have a pretty good deal. Food: For vegetarians I recommend: veggie pad thai, spring rolls and Thai salad (has tofu bits and an awesome peanut dressing). The Thai Iced Tea is good 90% of the time - sometimes they make it too sweet but I've had mostly pleasant experiences. You can also ask them to make things less or more spicy. If you don't like a certain vegetable or have a food allergy let them know! They also double check with me to see if egg is okay whenever I order vegetarian things. Their vegetarian selection is impressive! Venue: Asian inspired. They have lots of red decor and golden bells hanging. Tables have small candles in the middle. Nothing too crazy but it adds to the exotic atmosphere without being too cheesy. Street parking sucks! Takeout/Delivery: They deliver if you're 5 miles or less from their location in East Rutherford. I mostly order to pickup though. They usually have the food ready to pickup in 20-25 minutes. The lunch specials come in a black microwavable container with two sections - one for your entree and the bigger one for your main dish. If you order soda, they give you an empty cup with ice. They also give you a free banana dessert! Service: Only sat down for lunch one time. Food was presented elegantly on pretty plates. Service was fine at the beginning of the meal but towards the end, we were waiting for our check for a while until we caught the waitress. Staff: Ordering on the phone is easy. The older woman rushes you on the phone sometimes so be sure to let her know what drinks you want in between lunch specials before she says bye and cuts you off. She is pretty nice though. Younger woman is very pleasant and accommodating on the phone. How is this place still open? My girlfriend and I were craving an amazing thai meal, and it seemed this place would be a nice change. We love going to Veggie heaven, which is hands down the best food, but figured we would try this. WORST MISTAKE EVER. We walked in, and there was no one to greet us at the door. We had to go find someone, in the weird, poorly decorated restaurant. We finally sat, and the waitress was INCREDIBLY rude. Not only did she not greet us, but she also got our order wrong. As far as the food...it was horrible as well. The veggies were not fresh, and there was no flavor to anything. From start to finish, the waitress still was passive aggressive, rude, and unprofessional. And, to make things worse, the kitchen was disgusting. The restaurant isn't very big so it has a cozy atmosphere. It's clean and the staff are friendly. I've tried just about every thing on the menu and it's all delicious. The food is hot and the ingredients are fresh. I recommend the Pad-Se-Ew, Pineapple Fried Rice and the Crispy Duck in Panang Curry Sauce. The lunch specials are super cheap at 7.95 and even the more expensive menu items are still really affordable around 16.00 or so. Hope you decide to try it out. read more

Where do I begin? Apparently Kafka was the head chef for the evening because the entire meal and service was surreal. Our waiter was clad in a white t-shirt and sweatpants and eventually sat our table of five next to the kitchen in the sparsely packed space. At one point, the waitress locked herself in the bathroom for nearly 15 minutes after some bizarre exchange with her sweatpants clad boyfriend. Since our table was close to the bathroom, we were treated to some light dinner theater as the boyfriend continued to knock on the door in order to cajole her from the water closet. Besides the rampant amateurism and lack of professionalism, the food was okay since the appetizers were obviously just frozen and reheated in the oven. But the staff is very pleasant and go above and beyond to explain to me what items I can and can't eat and what substitutes they can do for me. If I could give no stars I would. I go to school nearby and I love Thai Food. The first time I ordered it I said NO PEANUTS NUT ALLERGY on my Uber Eats order. Of course they put extra and I ate it and I have a severe allergy to it and ended up having an allergy reaction. Really solid lunch special. I'm not a Thai connoisseur, but it's something I enjoy from time to time! The service was quick and friendly, and the food was great. I tried the Pad Basil with pork. The Pork pieces were great, nice big slices. The mix of veggies was good. Spicy, but not extreme, though they packed a small container of some very spicy hot sauce. The Satay chicken was very good, and I really liked the peanut sauce. One other reviewer thought it comes from a jar... I've never had peanut sauce from a jar that had this consistency. It's a very convenient walk from the cinemas at the Williams Center. Staff frequents this place for dinner often. My favorite dish is the Tom Kha soup. It's my favorite Thai soup and it's really delicious here. I come for their lunch specials with my family quite often. We love the food! The mango salad and tom yum soup are great. And our favorite 2 dishes are the Pad see yu and the lemon grass chicken! Food gets 4 stars! They can use a better way of heating, it's freezing in winter! Especially with the front doors opening and closing. And sometimes the place smells like toilet water. Not sure if they use a some kind of cleaning agent with dirty water for their kitchen floors that make it smell so bad or what it can be... And this is why I give them 3stars.
