Would like to tell you about the food, but we never saw any waitstaff. Thursday afternoon, only 2 other tables of diners, we walked in, sign said seat yourself, we did. The person behind the wine checkout looked at us, said nothing. We waited 5 minutes, not even a server in sight, person at the wine checkout looked at us again. Still no gesture or acknowledgment that we were there. Five more minutes, staff from the kitchen yelling that someone's food was ready, but nobody ever emerged from the kitchen. After almost 15 minute, we left. Very disappointing experience. read more

I'm going to try to say this in a nice way because I thoroughly enjoy every visit I have at Ray's...they have some dishes that are absolutely delicious and you can't get enough of, and then they have some dishes that should just be taken off the menu because they are not even close to up to par with the tasty dishes. I'll say one on here, and that is the French dip. Just save yourself the disappointment and order the sarge burger or the seafood trio instead because those are incredible. Great wine and beer selection all around. Only other complaint, and it is a minor one, is that it's always a little too warm in the building. Again, I love going here and any negatives I have stated are purely for the reader of this review's benefit when they visit, and you should visit! They have a great staff that is friendly and helpful, and it is a very exciting place to be. The positives definitely outweigh the minor negatives I have stated. read more

Great dinner this evening on a stopover in town. We were in a steak mood and the food definitely does not disappoint. I had the filet with roasted vegetables and sweet potato chips; my husband I ordered ribeye steak with sides. Both were cooked exactly as we wanted them. Nice bottle of cabernet at a reasonable cost, which is unusual and a good accompaniment. Service was good. The only thing stopping me from 5 stars is the noise level. Too many hard surfaces and not enough acoustic panels. But still definitely would go back next time we are in the area. read more

Ray's is the most impressive and delightful unexpected surprise I've ever happened upon west of 75! This place is a must-try for anyone in the Dayton Metro who appreciates culinary excellence. Ray's (at the time of my visiting) employs a classically trained chef with a heart that translates to the plate. Everything is made from scratch, fresh and gorgeous, and if you have dietary restrictions Ray's is your new BFF. The chef actually came out to meet me (yep, I'm one such annoying customer who goes out and can't eat anything lol) and talk to me about what I love, flavor combinations, and paid such perfect attention to my needs I was beyond just graciously accommodated, but felt humbled by the great deal of care extended! The chef actually asked if he could create me a surprise meal, tailored to my exact restrictions, using the info he gleaned--and created something so beautiful and artistic I was blown away! He even came out to present it. I did NOT expect any of this! I hope he is still there, and I hope he has been so very happy because wow, he deserves it. I do not have a single complaint. Beautiful, classy niche atmosphere that includes a cigar and wine specialty store for connoisseurs of such things, in addition to a beautiful glossy bar. If you're lucky you might discover you've come on a night with music--a musician's gently lilting melody drifting off the acoustic, relaxing waves of vocals that are neither too loud nor distracting, but really give the place an artistic (I'm gonna offer a funny word here considering the fact that I just said it was in a wine and cigar shop) elegance that leaves you feeling enchanted, and like you've discovered something truly special and nobody else knows your secret! The more I go here, the more I like it. The walk in beer cooler has more local craft beers than most as well beers from around the country and world. For dinner, I had their Ruben which was very good. Instead of sour kraut they used coleslaw and it was a nice touch. The dressing on the salad was one of the best I've had. My wife also got. WOW! Can't believe Dayton has a place like this...fresh, organic, not microwaves, fryers or aluminum pans! They actually try to make their patrons healthier! Love it. It's a wine/cigar shop with a bar and restaurant. I ordered a meal for pick up-it was delicious!!!!! They have gluten free breads, dessert, pizza and appetizers. Awesome menu! My meal consisted of: spinach/artichoke dip, barnyard sandwich on gluten free bread and the gluten free bread pudding. All of it was delicious! I would go back in a heart beat, if I am ever in Dayton again. The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of, the salad that came with the sandwich. It was a good mix of lettuce ( no iceberg! Great appetizers - we loved the smoked trout, delicious!! Our friends got the Maryland blue crab dip and enjoyed that as well. For dinner I ordered the Cuban sandwich and it was very tasty albeit the smallest Cuban sandwich I have ever seen served with a handful of lettuce. My wife got the crowned portobello and very much enjoyed it and it was piled high with vegetables and the delightful salmon crown. We also shared a salad and the creamy garlic dressing had us wanting to but a bottle, yum. The cocktails were strong but not well made. The bloody mary tasted as if it was only tomato juice and vodka and topped with a lime (?) , the manhattan was lacking sweet vermouth (it seemed), but the gin martini was decent. If we were invited by friends to come again we would likely go because the food was very good but probably wouldn't voluntarily come here again unless a new bartender was found. read more

In town visiting family and my brother recommended this neighborhood gem on the far North side of the city in Englewood. The food is simple but well prepared - fresh ingredients, eclectic menu selection and awesome seasonings. We had the crab dip which would have been better if it were warmer. Coming from the south near the gulf, I was a little disappointed with the amount of. crab in the dish. The dip was creamy and tasty. We ordered the catch of the day, tilapia, which was prepared blackened with potatoes and veggies. My brother enjoyed the dish and said he'd order it again. I had the Barnyard sandwich which comes with ham and turkey on sourdough bread. I was able to substitute the ham with pastrami for no additional charge. The sandwich was warm and delightfully delicious. My friend had the salmon quesadilla. This was a favorite at the table. We ordered the key lime dessert which was extremely sweet. The dessert missed on the tart key lime flavor. The chocolate bread pudding was rich and tasty however, a little dry. We also had wine and other cocktails. The service was amazing. Our server was knowledgeable and kind. The crowd was nice - diverse patrons - ages, races, couples, and lone diners or bar patrons. Overall, this is a nice place to eat, meet friends, and hang out. Not impressed. Sloooooooooow service. Took 20 mins to get a beer then had to go up to the bar to order another beer. Our server (Hannah) was more worried about her boyfriend two tables down than tipping customers. Lucky for her I've worked in the service for too long to leave a shitty tip. Probably won't be back. I came here for a rehearsal dinner so I'm not sure if the food we had is on their regular menu, but, I'll assume so. It's a pretty interesting place because when you walk in, on the right is the bar/restaurant, and on the left is the shop so you can go pick out your beer or wine or whatever spirits you plan on imbibing yourself in and drink it right then and there while having a meal. The food they served for the rehearsal dinner was veggie lasagna as well as normal lasagna with beef and they had salads and cheese, pepperoni pizza, breadsticks and chicken parm. The lasagna was hands down some of the best I've ever had. The cheese made this lasagna and I'd drive back to Dayton the next time I have a lasagna craving... actually, thinking about it now makes me want lasagna and the amazing amounts of cheese that were in it. read more

Wine was very good and decently priced. Hubby had roasted red pepper soup that was very good. Garden salad was large and good but balsamic dressing was soooo tart it was hard to enjoy the salad. I ordered the portobello mushroom sandwich. It was fair at best. Hub had the 3 seafood pasta. It was not very good. One of the scallops tasted tainted. The cod in the seafood pasta was very good but did not redeem the tiny shrimp and funny tasting scallops. Servers were very nice. read more

An excellent beer selection (more beer than I have seen in many other stores), an excellent wine selection, decent cigar selection, and a sit down eating area with a fantastic bar. The service was spot on, and the manager was also very attentive. We like it when the chef comes around to see how things are, and that is exactly what he did.
