After hearing and seeing rave reviews, my husband and I had a craving for dessert plus coffee and wanted to try this place out. We were deciding, told the young lady that this was our first time here and asked a couple of questions as to what some of the cakes were. The young girl answered quickly and when we were checking out, we paid, and then she just walked away. We asked if we were done because our plates were across the counter at the checkout. So we reached across and grabbed them. We were told the coffee mugs were "over there." So we looked and looked "over there" and finally asked someone else and they told us they were in a warming drawer. Coffee was just barely warm and tasteless. Horrible - I can't get past the poor dirty condition to rank the food. I sat in here reading for about an hour before trying to order something. With 3 employees behind the counter and virtually no customers at the time, I sat in an area with 9 tables and 8 were dirty and full of lunch hour dishes. No one came out to clean even one table. At about 3:30 they began to get busy so I got in line to order. The same employees who had done nothing for the past hour were now complaining about how there is never enough help for the mid-day rush. I love this cozy, quaint dessert shop! They have very yummy desserts and very tasty coffee! You can't go wrong with most anything you get here. For the price and taste it was very dissatisfying to me. I excepted more decorations and got really simple things that could have been done at Walmart. I paid 70$ for what?!?! I called them on Monday and they didn't see anything wrong with a cake and were not very caring about my opinion. Although I have come here multiple times, I have to give this place 3 stars because: The desserts: I have tried them all and I have figured out which desserts I like and which desserts I do not like. The cakes: good but the frosting on the cake, not so much because it is solid and not creamy which makes it difficult to eat. The Napoleons: whether it is regular or not, is not flaky as you might think it to be; it is soft. The cheesecake: it is creamy but is a bit tough. It is a bit too sweet in my opinion but I am person who prefers bitter-sweet. The cheesecake bite is good as well The Cream Horns: my absolute favorite dessert Rao's offers! Every time I go to Rao's I always get a cream horn. It is filled with some of the lightest cream I have ever had and that is one of the key things I look for when I get a cream pastry. The entrees: I have had a majority of them and have found the entrees to be the best thing about their entire menu The sandwiches: I have tried almost all of their sandwiches and I have come to the conclusion that the Sicilian Tuna sandwich is my absolute favorite; it has a wonderful lemon taste that is not overwhelming with a nice tuna taste that goes fantastic with the lemon and it has a nice texture to it. You can also order your favorite sandwich salad on a plate. The Soups: their soups are absolutely wonderful. My absolutely favorite is the baked potato soup. It is the creamiest baked potato soup I have ever had. I have ordered baked potato soups at other places and it does not compare to the baked potato soup I have when I'm at Rao's. The drinks: They are good but not consistent. I have come to Rao's many many times and have ordered one of my favorite coffee drinks they serve: Snickers Latte. It is a hazelnut and espresso drink. However, I have ordered this drink a lot and every time I buy one, the taste isn't consistent. Either it does taste like the drink or it does not. And if I am paying $5 for coffee, it needs to be consistent. The reason for this is because a different person makes your drink every time and appears to make it differently. Overall, Rao's is a good bakery but there are other places I'd recommend for things such as coffee. But if you're looking for a place that has a nice ambiance and serves pretty good sandwiches and dessert, then Rao's is the place for you. read more

I really want to like Rao's I really do, but they just need work. The biggest issue is the staff; they are not personable at all and lack any form of customer service. The service itself is PAINFULLY slow; I went in for a strawberry smoothie the last time I visited and had to wait 20+ minutes - there were maybe three other tables seated, insane! Besides the service and staff issues the place is always too hot and needs some major A/C, everything is deffo overpriced for the quality of food/service/quantity and I've never been a fan of their pastries, they're not bad just not special. Like I said I want to like Rao's so every few months I return and give them another try, if things improve I'll update this review. Great place whenever the sweet tooth hits! Walking into the bakery, the decor is very nice, cozy, and inviting. You can order to go or just hang out there like a cafe reading your newspaper, do your homework, watch TV, etc... Lots of great selection of cakes, cookies, and all sorts of other sugary goodies. My blood sugar rises to about 278 just from walking through the door with the sweet aroma of the bakery. I love their red velvet cake here! It's a bit on the heavy creamy side, but when you're in the mood to behave badly, oh why not? Cannolis here are excellent Little Italy-excellent? No, but good enough for Texas. One of these days, I need to remember to try out their king cakes. A little pricey for their offerings though. But a great option to stop by for some sweets in Spring! read more

Rao's combines my two favorite things in life: Great coffee and great desserts. Sometimes we just need to get out of the house after dinner and Raos is a great place to go. Coffee: usually 2-3 blends to chose from and I've never been disappointed. They have nice heavy mugs in a warmer with free refills. Not sure they make much money on me when it comes to the coffee but they make up for it on the sweets Desserts: I normally get the turtle cheesecake. Not too sweet and the right amount of chocolate fudge icing. The carrot cake is legit as well. Not too crazy about the Italian cream cake. Too much icing and cake is a little dry. Nice choice of gelato and sorbet but hard to get that when there are so many cakes and cookies a few feet away. My wife has had several of the cupcakes and they are decent - had better but have had worse. Environment: love the feel. Great place to hang with friends or spouse or even by yourself. There is outdoor seating which is nice until the humidity of Houston summer kicks into full swing but that is the case everywhere. If you go wi a group, make sure everyone gets something different and then you can try a bit of everything. read more

Living in the Spring area all of my life, Raos was my go-to dessert place. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what happened over the years but their desserts are bland! I haven't been there in a year or so and they renovated the place. Now the line of customers waiting to order blocks the view of the bake case, so other people can't browse the cakes. I ordered the Blueberry Cream Cheese hand pie and it tasted like nothing! The pastry didn't even have any sort of buttery or sugary taste. Not to mention, it's so disorganized! The menus are right by the cashiers, so people have to browse the menu right in front of the registers causing the time is takes to order food to be a lot longer. I'm so disappointed. read more

I think I want to peg this place as a great coffee house. No, they don't have all the types in the world, but their brew is good. I drank 3 cups along with a great sandwich (egg salad on a toasted croissant) and a mug of homemade soup of the day. And the dessert cases!! Huge array of baked desserts - by the piece. We ran out of time to have a dessert, but there is a piece of german chocolate cake with my name on it so I will be back to claim it. I loved the coffee house atmosphere (and it was all decorated for Mardi Gras), and I loved the way our little party was able to sit, eat, drink coffee and relax and enjoy our time. read more

I was lucky enough to sample 3 - strawberry & cream cheese, cinnamon and Zulu - custard inside with a layer of chocolate & some toasted coconut on top. WOW. It was more like a croissant. Off the freakin' hook good. Available year-round with ~36 hours notice. GREAT family-owned bakery that started in Beaumont in 1941. 3 locations in Beaumont, one in Nederville and this one in Houston. Met the dad, son, daughter-in-law and 2 year old grandbaby that were all super nice and made everyone feel like family. My wife and I were in on August 31st to have some breakfast. Shortly after we sat down to eat a women came into the restaurant with her dog. She ordered some breakfast and than proceeded to sit down on a bench with her dog. The dog promptly jumped up on to the bench next to her. Shortly after that one of the employees brought her food over to her. The employee saw the dog and did not say anything to her about having her dog in the restaurant or on the bench. The dog started to jump up and down on the bench while she was eating her breakfast. Than when she was done with her breakfast she took the dog with her into the restroom. There was also another employee that made a comment about oh how cute the dog was, not telling her that the dog can not be in the restaurant. When my wife went up to refill her ice tea she was talking to an employee about something. My wife told her gee I wish i could bring my dog in here with me. She laughed and said AWW. My wife told her she follows the laws of the Health Department, and your not suppose to bring in animals inside a restaurant. She told my wife to quit harassing her. She said my dog has papers. That's a laugh because that was not a SERVICE DOG. This dog was some little 15 lb. long hair dog that didn't behave it self. There is a perfectly good patio outside for customers with pets. This place once was 5 stars to me but not on January 25, 2020. I came in around 9pm with my family. We had eaten downtown and we were thinking about ordering dessert. Then someone said "let's just head back to the house and go to Rao's" , so we did. My first complaint is that there was only one type of cake sold by the slice. There were many cakes but they couldn't cut a piece of carrot cake, I could only buy the whole cake. There were a few offerings for pie by the slice so I ordered a piece of apple pie. It looked great but when I tried to eat it, it was frozen solid. My second complaint was that the iced sugar cookies were stale. They had to be 2 or 3 days old. I will go back and I hope they bring back the good old days of freshness and by the slice carrot cake. read more

I used to go to the original Rao's in Beaumont a couple times a year on the way to and from my grandmother's house in Louisiana. It was a fantastic family-run bakery with great cookies and cakes. I was elated to see that they have opened a couple of locations in Houston. I've tried it a couple of times about a year apart and while they still produce high quality goods, this location doesn't meet the standard of the one in Beaumont. I've noticed that the people working here weren't trained well (or at least it seems that way). Both times, the person helping me had a lot of trouble with the cash register (understandable if the register is finicky, but this seems to be a pattern) or didn't know basic information about the menu. I'm guessing they have a high turnover of employees and don't have the time to train every new person very thoroughly. I love their cakes but I am not too crazy about their cookies. I also like that they sell cake by the slice so you can try it out before ordering a whole one. Their cakes are always moist and beautifully decorated. The cupcakes are huge and very pretty. The cookies, especially the seasonally-decorated sugar cookies, look adorable but I find them too be too dry and the icing way too sugary and not creamy enough. I can't really complain about that too much since everyone has their own personal preferences about the flavor of cookies and icing. I appreciate that they always have a great selection and keep their pastry cases well-stocked. They also have gelato available but I've never tried it. I've never had any their savory snacks or sandwiches but I can imagine that they're delicious. I do not get to go to Rao's often due to it being located up in the north side of Houston. Most of the time I depend on my husband perhaps remembering to pick up some pastries when he goes to visit his best friend who lives near the place. Anyways, since I do not go often, this is based on the pastries I get to enjoy occasionally. My hubby has brought home the strawberry napoleon and a couple of other cake slices. I usually do not have a sweet tooth but wow! Such delightful and moist cakes to wake up my sugar taste buds! The puff pastry on the strawberry napoloen is not too flaky, which is how I prefer it. The strawberries are plentiful and fresh! Yum! Aside from eating the goodies brought home by the hubby, I actually got to stop in the place on 01/03/10 (Sunday). The place was hopping! I ordered a slice of the Eclipse cake because it was beautifully decorated and sitting there in the display calling my name. Mmmm! It was like a chocolate marshmallow covered cake! I also got two scoops of gelato: Banana cream and caramel flavors. The caramel flavor gelato was better than the banana so get a scoop of it! This bakery is a happening spot and good for families. The only complaint is that the beverage area is right by the ordering counter and cash register so when the line gets long, it is not easy to manuever around to refill a cup of water or tea. A friend recommended this bakery to us and I called to order a cake for the Fourth of July. I called the day before and the manager who answered was very sweet and efficient. I ordered the Eclipse cake with "Happy Fourth of July!" written in the festive red, white, and blue. I was happy she took my order because most places require that people call at least 2 days in advance. My sister and I stopped by early the next morning to pick up the cake and it was beautiful and just as I wanted. My chief complaint is the flavor and taste. The cake was overly sweet - like swallowing a pure sugar. The frosting was laid on thick and too overwhelming to the point where I couldn't even distinguish any other flavors and the "Bavarian cream" was not Bavarian cream. Prices are just a tad lower than Starbucks but higher than Starbucks on the pastry side. The custom cakes look really good & the gelato section looks like there is a broad range of flavors. It was so,so. It took a long time to get someone to answer the phone. I wanted to ask if they could leave out the shredded coconut out of the Italian cake and the lady that answered the phone had a slight attitude and flat out said no. Tres leches is pretty good. The middle of it was delicious but all the sides were a bit too dry. There's also too much strawberry jam so it takes away from the cake but if you like very sweet or strawberry flavor then you won't mind. I've been going to Rao's bakery for almost 4 years now. Their desserts are great and their small lunch and breakfast menu are tasty as well. This place reminds me of a european cafe. The patio outside is shaded with a fountain and some statues. I think my favorite thing to order here is the sandwich combo with soup, with passion fruit tea. Unfortunately, yesterday on a call-in/pick-up order I was short-changed on sandwich order: half instead of whole-wouldn't you know it was for my guest. Could not get thru on phone yesterday to report and when I did today General Manager Rita was matter-of-face & unapologetic. I was to come in for a gift card but protested the inconvenience & asked for a refund. She then tells me it has to go thru the corporate office. Amazing how a business can wear you down. I read online that this is the place you want to go in Houston for a good King Cake that is about as close to authentic as you could want. Well, I can understand why native Houstonians would think this is authentic, but it's not. Way too heavy and way too hard. I can't give them one star based on this though. They have a lot more going for them than King Cake, but since that's all I tried I can only go by this. If I am ever out in that area again, maybe I will stop by for some gelato since that looked awesome. Or maybe some of their small eclairs that I really wanted to buy, but I had to be good!
