Many options for Mexican food in PLG but this place has jumped to the top of my list.

This is not the city for Mexican food, I do not care who tries to sway me. It simply. Does not. Work. The trend continues at this tiny cantina in Dyker Heights. I paid $40 for mediocrity, maybe even a step or two below it. The staff is friendly and cute, and speaking Spanish will get you further, but the food drops off significantly after the promising chips and dip. When I ordered the Queso Fundido, I was looking forward to a sharp Mexican blend with ground chorizo and some extra chips to boot. Instead I got what looked like blended Oaxaca cheese, an onion top, and some very unattractive bits of chorizo that were begging me not to eat them. So I did not. I ate the cheese because the cheese was pleasant, but the fact it comes with flour tortillas does not help its cause. When I ordered the Tortilla Soup, I was hoping for a nice blend of Mexican spices, shredded chicken, avocado, and tortilla strips. While I did get that, I also got bland flavors and a lack of any personality with the soup. In fact, it had a weird, milky, creamy broth that made me feel uncomfortable about finishing it. So I did not. When I ordered the fish tacos, I was expecting a nice piece of fresh fish, plenty of spicy pico, and an aoli to round out the whole thing. The breading for the fish is a tempura breading (bad call), and the fish they use is tilapia (an even worse call). I understand that this is not San Diego, but these two pieces of fish were practically begging me to put them out of their misery so I could send them packing for the Golden State at a later time. I duly complied. As I walked out I continued to wonder. Will this city ever get it right with a cuisine I hold close to my heart? Because right now, the future is looking bleak. At least my food was spared from further torture.

I tried the Tabu Tacos, and the AguaChiles. The decor and ambiance is amazing and makes you feel like you're in Tulum or Miami Where I think things could be improved is just service, our server Valentina was extremely nice and friendly. We waited a while for our drinks and had to ask for water and napkins a few times and ultimately waited over 15 minutes for our check after asking twice. They ended up comping our drinks, and surprised me with a birthday dessert The place is very charming. Luis is a really good manager / director he really saved the day and was able to shift the mood of my entire party :) thanks for the food, hospitality and memories and amazing photos!! See you soon

The restaurant itself is beautiful, and I loved that the music wasn't blasting -- we could actually enjoy our conversation during dinner. My husband surprised me with an early Mother's Day date night and it ended up being such a good choice. The food was honestly amazing. We started with the Shrimp Ceviche, Pistachio Guacamole, and fish tacos. The guacamole completely stole the show for us - probably one of the best we've had. The flavors were so good and there was this little sweet surprise in it (I think maybe pomegranate?) that made it even better. The ceviche was also packed with flavor... so good I basically finished the whole thing myself . My husband said the fish tacos were his least favorite, so I skipped trying them. For our mains, I got the branzino and WOW... absolutely delicious. My husband had the enchiladas and loved them too. Overall such a great experience and definitely a place we'd come back to.

It'd be much better if the meat was a lot juicier and had more seasoning overall. I do like that they added parchment paper in between each taco so that they don't get too soggy. On the other hand, the loaded fries are pretty salty! Overall, I've had muchhh better tacos elsewhere. For the price, their food is not worth another visit from me, unfortunately.

I found out they're a mini chain with decent ratings overall. I put all my eggs into one basket and got 4 of their fish tacos while my husband got birria tacos. The birria tacos were very meaty, even in the small bite I took. My fish tacos were pretty mid. The fish didn't taste as fresh as some other places (not that it tasted old). I saw a Google review that someone threw out their tacos because they thought their tortillas were moldy. And the restaurant responded saying it's the color from the red cabbage in the fish tacos. I confirmed only areas that touched the red cabbage in my tacos had a grayish tint. The fish batter was very crispy, but in a way that took center stage, which shouldn't be the case. The fish taco as a whole was pretty dry without the mild sauce, but the mild sauce was soooo %$#@$@#%#% spicy. Unfortunately, that was the least spicy option for the sauce, and what my husband and I both chose. We literally had to take breaks in between to deal with the spice. Afterward, I could still feel the heat in my stomach, and my husband did not have pleasant bathroom experiences. Safe to say, I will not be returning to this place if I ever want fish tacos again.
