Black Tonkotsu
Carolyn R.

Absolutely loved this place! I've been trying to visit this place for a while and when I finally got the chance I was not disappointed! The staff were friendly and ordering was super easy via a QR code. I was stuck in between the tonkotsu spicy and the black tonkotsu, ended up going with the black tonkotsu and was so impressed! My boyfriend got the classic tonkotsu and he loved it as well! We live close and will be going back!

Finally got to try this place and it did not disappoint! I love how you can order through a scan code and pay directly there. Quick easy and convenient! I ordered the special Thai Curry Tsukemen and it was delicious. The star of the show is definitely the noodles itself. Can't wait to come back and try other ramens in the menu!

Ramen512 is by far the best spot for traditional and authentic Japanese ramen in the north Austin area! Everything they serve is made from scratch including their noodles and broth but the pricing is incredibly reasonable. Their customer service is top-notch which is just the icing on the cake! FAST FACTS: * Parking - located in a shopping center with a large parking lot * Reservations - no but you put your name into a tablet when you arrive to join the queue if there's a wait * Online ordering - available for pickup on their website * Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays * Weekly specials available until sold out (check their Instagram or Facebook) SERVICE - We arrived at 6:35 pm on a Sunday and were 4th in line after joining the queue through the tablet. Our table was ready at 7:00 pm and one of the workers kept us updated about the status of our table several times while we waited. Once seated, there is a QR code on the table to scan and place your order. Our server brought water to the table right away and checked on us throughout the meal to make sure we had what we needed. All of our food was prepared and delivered to the table about 10 minutes after ordering. I was incredibly impressed by the customer service! PRICING - The total was $67.65 after tax ($5.15) but before tip for a chicken karaage ($8), signature shoyu ($17) with extra spinach ($1.50) and extra kikurage mushrooms ($1.50), classic tonkotsu ($17), and black tonkotsu ($17.50). I think the pricing is reasonable for the quality of ingreidents and portion size. CHICKEN KARAGAGE (8/10): The chicken is incredibly juicy and tender while the coating is crispy! The Japanese mayo on the side for dipping is delicious. It comes with several large pieces so it's a great option for an appetizer to share. SIGNATURE SHOYU (8/10): This is a Tokyo-style shoyu ramen with chicken and dashi broth that's savory, umami, and a little tangy. It comes with pork chashu (I subbed chicken for no extra cost), homemade noodles, spinach, bamboo shoot, scallion, nori, Japanese fish cake, and half a soy egg. I added extra spinach and kikurage mushrooms for $1.50 each. CLASSIC TONKOTSU (9/10): This has a rich and creamy pork broth with a savory umami flavor. It comes with pork chashu, homemade noodles, kikurage mushrooms, beni shoga, scallions, nori, and half a soy egg. This is definitely a must-order if it's your first time! BLACK TONKOTSU (8/10): This has a rich and creamy pork broth with black garlic oil. It comes with pork chashu, homemade noodles, kikurage mushrooms, beni shoga, scallions, nori, garlic chips, and half a soy egg. All the flavors pair well together but the garlic does overpower the pork flavor in the broth (but I think that's to be expected if you're ordering a black garlic tonkotsu). Honestly, there's nothing not to love about Ramen512... from the service to the ingredients to the pricing, it has everything you could want and more. Eventually, I'd love to try everything on the menu because there are so many great options! The interior has counter seating like what you would traditionally see at a ramen shop in Japan as well as tables so it's perfect for enjoying a meal by yourself or with your entire family. I would recommend Ramen512 to anyone in the north Austin area looking for authentic Japanese ramen at a reasonable price!

This is a must-try restaurant!! The ramen is one of the best I've had in the area. Ambiance: The service was really good, and there wasn't too long of a wait. I honestly liked that you pay and order online, it was very efficient. Ramen: Everything about the ramen was great. I loved that the broth wasn't too salty and had a nice, creamy flavor. The pork was insanely good. The portion size was great as well, and there were just enough noodles. If you need more, the side order of noodles is enough to make almost a whole second bowl of ramen.

Nothing is better than a warm bowl of ramen when it's chilly outside! Am I right, y'all? We love Ramen Tatsuya, of course, but the broth is always a bit too much for me. Too thick. Hubby dearly loves it, though! This is why we decided to branch out today, so we're headed to Ramen 512 for the first time. We've heard it mentioned a bunch, and there's a picture of a ramen bowl on their website that appears to have a lighter broth, so I'm psyched! Hubby is the real fancy ramen expert, though. I'm only a former expert of the back-in-the-college days packaged ramen. LOL! So, we'll see what he thinks! This place is small, but super-cute with great style. We truly love the cool vibe, and the ease of ordering! Here's what we ordered, and here's what we think: Spicy Edamame: We love spicy edamame, and this was an excellent version of that. Chicken Karaage: These were some truly delicious and crunchy bites of chicken! The provided mayo, lemon wedge, and yummy bit of lemon zesty spice were an excellent addition to a tasty appetizer! Signature Shoyu with extra noodles ("arrives later on the side" LOVE that): This is the ramen that I saw on the website, and, unfortunately, it just didn't totally deliver for me. The noodles were excellent, but it all just sort of bored me. Maybe I should have added some extras when I ordered? Not bad, by ANY stretch , but just meh. They did deliver the extra noodles just at the right time! Hubby threw them into his Tonkotsu. Classic Tonkotsu: Speaking of my husband, he really enjoyed his! He thought that the broth was excellent! Silly, smooth, and full of depth. He loved the noodles, but we actually thought that the meat in both of our ramens was a bit on the extra-fatty side. Not grilling the meat on both sides is a miss. All in all, while we think that this is a stylish vibe, with yummy apps, and some solid bowls of ramen, we don't this that this'll be our go to. It's pretty pricey, to boot. We don't mind paying $20 for a bowl of ramen, but we'd have liked more excitement, better grilled meats, and more options to add. I think that four stars is fair. As always, YMMV. The atmosphere is very cute, and the server who was managing the floor was as sweet and efficient as he could be! Thanks, Ramen 512!

Ok I want to emphasize this review is coming from a vegetarian! So take what I say with the grain of salt. I am so appreciative of a ramen spot having a vegetarian choice for all us vegetarian people. I went with my husband and a friend on a Friday evening at around 6 PM. There was a slight wait and they have an iPad in front that you can add yourself to a waitlist. I didn't see an option to add ourselves on wait list prior to arrival. The service was great - they were constantly checking people in even with the waitlist and trying to clear tables out to keep the list moving. We probably waited around 15 minutes for a table. So really 5 stars on the service they were constantly checking in on us and refilling our waters. I got the vegan tan tan and though the noodles were great, I found the broth to be salty and not overly flavorful. The description said it would have chili oil and I didn't taste that at all. It really needed some acid or something to brighten the soup as I found the broth to be just one salty note. My husband had the classic tonkotsu and also thought it was just ok. Space is clean and slightly small. They do have alike a small bar in the back if you're coming to eat individually very similar to how they do it in Japan. If you're a big group of 6 or more know likely there will be a wait. Parking wise is easy and free as it shares the parking lot with Randall's and is located in a strip mall.

Michael L.

THE BIG: Located in Cedar Park in the Lakeline Village shopping center. Right next to the Randall's grocery store. Quaint interior and plenty of parking spaces in the lot. THE BLACK AND WHITE: The wife and I came here on a Sunday at noon and it was decently packed. We put our names on the waiting list and got immediately seated. For food, we got the Tori tan tan and classic tonkotsu. The ordering was interesting because you use a QR code to order but at the end you pay via card instead of the app. The tori tan tan was very creamy and rich with a nice slab of chasu. The meat was very smoked, so i assume they did a quick char on one side to get that smokiness. The wife's tonkotsu was a very clean bowl of ramen. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall for two ramens, we spent around $40, crazy how ramen is now $20 a bowl. Flavorful and definitely worth a visit to try the ramens.

Kristine L.

Came on a Sunday afternoon around lunch time. The restaurant is small, so you may need to add your name to a waiting list when you arrive. Fortunately, my husband and I were seated immediately. Its a self-service concept, so you order through a QR code and grab your own utensils. Ramen comes out pretty quick. I got the classic tonkatsu and thought the broth was very clean and traditional. The pork is SO delicious, and everything blended well. Overall, nothing too out of this world, but a good classic ramen.

AMAZING! Delicious ramen - our new favorite ramen in town! My husband tried the black garlic tonkotsu and I tried the Tori tan tan We also tried the chicken karaage - best we've tried lately!! Served w a side of mayo I believe - all so freaking good!! We loved everything! Ramen was incredible - very flavorful without being too heavy!! Plenty of parking since it's inside a shopping center and a good amount of indoor seating. Super cute decor inside and clean restrooms Order at QR code at table / super simple and easy for service! Food came out in great time!

We didn't have the best experience last time we were here which was when they first opened (4 years ago), but after some time we decided to give it another chance. We're glad we did. The experience was much better on the food as well as the service. We asked for recommendations and were given the three Ramens which we ordered. The classic tonkatsu broth has a lot of flavor and depth without being too oily. The pork was tender and nicely charred. Egg was cooked to perfection and I like the thin noodles which has good texture. We also enjoyed the Black Tonkatsu. Not very garlicky but did add mince fragrance to the dish. I thoroughly enjoyed the Mazesoba as well. It's a nice alternative if you like what's in a ramen but don't like too much broth. This dish has a dick to it; given they add the pepper flake as a topping, I'm sure you can ask the to adjust the spice to your liking. The chicken karage was incredible. Great flavor and chicken pieces are moist. I was there was one or two more pieces in each order. Overall, I'm glad we gave them another try. We will sure come back next time the weather calla for it or when we the cravings for ramen again.

I haven't been into Ramen512 in awhile since it's a little far out for me. But I love the comfort of warm ramen noodles on a cool, cloudy day. We got here around 1pm and they had a bit of a wait. Not too bad though. You'd sign into the tablet at the door and hang out front, unfortunately no waiting area inside due to space constraints. But they turn the tables quickly. If you're solo, they have counter top seating. Such delicious ramen and the char on the chashu is amazing. I'm drooling thinking about the chashu now. The karaage chicken is a nice shareable for the table and is a great addition to your meal.

If you like ramen, this place is a must try. Been to Japan multiple times and imo, it's preeettyyyy comparable. So glad we chose this place over the bigger chain ones cause those are very hit or miss. I honestly wasn't that hungry coming here but I killed my ramen, it was that good. Broth was perfect and noodle is exactly just how I like it. I don't care much about the meat because I'm really more of a soup person but it was delicious too. It didn't taste tooooo porky if you know what I mean. Hands down, give this place a try! Just a very authentic ramen place. Service was good too, food came out timely.

Came here with a friend for the first time and we both loved what we ordered! I got the spicy tonkatsu and the broth was excellent. Only complaint was that the pork was super fatty but I still enjoyed it. Service was decent and the inside of the restaurant was very cute!

Young kids doing hard work on a friday evening instead of partying. And they did a great job!!! Second, the food: We had the soup dumplings, the won ton in the chili sauce, the minced pork noodle and the stir fry noodles with beef. The food was amazing, could be a little bit more spicy though, but they have some hot sauces and chili oil to turn it up a notch. The noodles were perfectly cooked, not to soft and not al dente. Prices are good, portions are plenty. Also, they have these super delicious garlicky cucumbers in a savory sauce/dressing at the self serve section. I should have taken more of those. Simple seating, bamboo plants, simple wood furniture, red lanterns and a shrine-- it gives traditional without even trying. You can order either at the counter or directly at your table via QR code. I'd recommend ordering at the counter, since it seems like table orders take longer to get moving. If your body runs warm, their central AC isn't running and for the most part, I found myself too hot to even want to order noodles with broth. Instead, I opted for the Cold Sesame noodles, which surprisingly wasn't bad! NOTE: the picture overhypes the dish and the actual result/taste look nothing like it. It absolutely needed more dimension other than the cucumbers, lettuce, and carrots-- fried garlic, lime, peanuts, scallions, ANYTHING. The chicken was tender (THANK GOODNESS), but should have been more shredded. Small menu items: *The Taiwanese Popcorn: another one-dimensional item that could have been so much better. It needed more spices and BASIL! *Soup Dumplings: Came out deflated with not enough soup, but the good news: the dumpling wrapper was tender and the pork filling wasn't too bad. *Shrimp & Pork Wontons in Chili Sauce: needs more acidity, I added a few drops of vinegar and it made the dish perfect Self-Service: In addition to being able to order at your table, Noodle Alley has a self-service bar where they serve oranges (essential to end all Chinese meals) and cucumber salad. Though there seems to be some praise for the cucumber salad, we found it to be too soggy meaning it's been sitting for some time.

When I finally did, I discovered one of the best Japanese restaurants in Austin. Okay ... if you are going to pay $600 for an omikase then the omikase place is better. The tasting menu at Uchi is better. But if you just want Japanese without paying a gold brick and taking out a second mortgage on your house, Miyo Yakitori and Sushi is pretty damm fine. * * * a) Japanese curry is a utility dish in most Japanese restaurants ... and when you get down to it, in most Japanese homes. It is often what you serve on "cheap" night. Airport hotels offer it as the "free dinner" for tired travellers. The curry sauce itself here is standard issue. But they serve it with a Pork Katsu the size of Williamson county. And it is a very good Pork Katsu. That Katsu was good from Liberty Hill to Thrall and from Hester's Crossing to Jarrell. b) My carnivorous partner's Fireball Udon with Shellfish blew him away. Temperature wise and aesthetic pleasure wise. He raved about how good his udon was all the way home. c) Service was instantaneous. I think there was some sort of event horizon distortion of the space time continuum that allowed them to prepare the food and then go back in time and deliver it within a minute of it being ordered. Both of us were impressed. d) The service staff was as nice as any human beings could possibly be. * * * Great food. Great service. The folks who live in the apartment complex that Miyo is in are very lucky people indeed. Either the apartments are lovely and they get Miyo on top of that. Or the apartments are terrible, but they can still spend all their time in Miyo to compensate. Seems like a fair trade. **************** If you read the other reviews, There seems to be some controversy about this establishment. Miyo has fans and Miyo has haters. * * * Here is my read on the conflicting opinions: a) Earlier in the restaurant's history - Say about 2016, 17, or 18, The restaurant was not very good at all. I think at that time it had another name. b) There was a name change and quality went up. Sometimes when this happens there is an ownership change (or there is an owner who swaps out the management and cooking team to put in new blood.) However, things got fixed, they got fixed. c) Miyo's yakitori is apparently still not where it needs to be. I am not a huge Yakitori fan. If your broiled meat on a stick is not $80 an ounce Wagyu, Or amazing organ meats grilled in the Caucasus Barded with lamb fat and with farm fresh vegetables On another skewer for serious taste contrast ... If you are not at that high level, I don't want to pay for meat on a skewer. There are people who DO like Yakitori. They do NOT like the Miyo versions of that. * * * Yakitori is less than 20% of Miyo's menu. The rest is sushi or wonderful cooked dishes. Lay off the skewer food and you can do well here.

We finally made it back last Saturday for lunch, and it was definitely worth the wait. I was initially excited to try one of their bento meals after seeing the menu online, but the prices at the restaurant were much higher than what was posted. That's understandable considering how much costs have gone up over the years, so we decided to go with the AYCE option instead. It turned out to be the perfect choice. A special shoutout to our server, whose name I unfortunately forgot to ask. She was friendly, attentive, and honest enough to recommend that we not order too much at first because the tempura portions are much larger than expected. The portion sizes here are much bigger than what we're used to at AYCE sushi restaurants in San Antonio. The shrimp tempura and vegetable tempura were generously sized, with thick, crispy batter that was still flavorful and delicious. Some of our favorite were the Salmon Skin salad, which stayed perfectly crispy even with the dressing, and the Mushroom Soup, which was light, flavorful, and not thick or creamy like many other versions. The shrimp and chicken shumai, chicken karaage, mango rolls, and all of the sashimi we ordered were fresh and delicious as well. Overall, we had a wonderful experience. Also I noticed the texture of the hamachi was really soft and not as firm as I am usually used to Salmon belly nigiri - didn't love it, honestly was a bit fishy King salmon nigiri - this is when we started noticing that most of the fish has this soft, gummy like texture which makes it unappealing to eat, didn't love this one either Dry aged hamachi nigiri - appreciated the size of the fish but again experienced that mushy like texture which overwhelms the eating experience because I didn't want to keep chewing it let alone eat it Santa Barbara Uni nigiri - it was meh nothing special Scallop nigiri - the way it was served it was impossible to eat because it wasn't sliced in a way to eat it properly. I literally didn't eat it because it was served as a whole scallop vertically on the rice Snow trout (special) nigiri - looked promising but again it had that unpleasant texture which by this point we wanted to stop eating overall because it was making it hard to enjoy Big toro roll (which came out last) - definitely the most disappointing we barely ate it and even the toro on top and the toro mixture in the middle also had that odd texture that made all the fish taste the same like gummy mush we barely ate it and actually left most of it uneaten Though the food felt very overhyped and was extremely underwhelming, the service we received from the waiters was very good. I'm truly hoping we went on an off night but even then I don't think we would return.
