Tried them for the first time last night. I ordered a shoyu ramen with max spicy level thinking that they'd put the Japanese shichimi togarashi spicy seasoning in the soup....but what I got was a Chinese mala spicy hot pot flavored soup?! I'm still super confused!!! The soup color was even all wrong! Everything in the ramen (toppings and soup) ended up all tasting like hot pot so I was glad I didn't waste money to add extra toppings. One star for their pork slices. That one I ate first before letting it soak in the broth too long so I was actually able to taste the amazing flavor it had. The texture was great too. One star for my husband's combo grilled meat plate. He said it was great. One star for the texture of the soft boiled egg in the ramen. It was really good. Again, can't judge on the flavor because it just tasted like mala hot pot lol but the color on the marinated egg wasn't too dark so I think it's safe to assume it wasn't too flavorful yet. We stopped by the nearby outlets on our way home from Monterey. It was close to dinnertime and we found Ramen 101 on Yelp and decided to stop by given the positive reviews and nearby location. They have a covered area which seats about 20 right outside. You order inside, they provide a number and bring food to your table. Wife has the tonkatsu ramen. I tasted the soup which was good, but was better with a little siracha kick and maybe could have used a little more salt. She ate it all so I guess no complaints there. I had the Hawaiian chicken rice plate. They were very generous with the chicken, maybe two full chicken thighs. Well cooked, but again could use a little more seasoning. I add some siracha and soy sauce which lifted everything up a notch. I will say that underseasoning is better than over so erring on that side is not so bad. Overall, I would say 3-1/2 stars, but rounding up as it seems to be a small locally owned spot which I like supporting. I have been wanting to try this place after seeing the great reviews and finally had the opportunity to try it after shopping at the outlets. My sister, daughter, and I were ready for some ramen and bbq! We ordered lumpia, a combo plate with chicken katsu & bbq chicken, and (2) orders of tonkatsu ramen. Total was $54 before tip. Once we paid we found a table and waited for our food to arrive. The lumpia comes out and its looking a bit pale in color and no sauce. They gave us 2 packets of sweet and sour sauce. Who eats lumpia with sweet & sour?! I asked for sweet chili & they came back with something similar. Lumpia was no good, I have had better frozen from the Asian market. The bbq rice plate comes out & my sister had ordered it with no mac salad, all rice. She got all mac no rice. When she them they gave her a bowl of rice. Our ramens come out and we were ready to dig in! After a few sips of the broth, disappointment sets in. The broth had hardly any flavor. No depth, kind of bland, no salt. I had to ask for soy sauce and got 1 packet. Umm, it wasn't enough and it didn't help. We basically had a big bowl of bland broth and a ton of noodles that were tasteless and needed to be cooked a tad longer. We were both so bummed we couldn't even finish half a bowl. This place is a great value for the money and has good quality food. We had the chicken and pork ramen and the grilled squid appetizer. If anyone is familiar with and likes Ajisen Ramen (AR) then you will like Ramen 101 (R101) because they are fairly comparable restaurants. On the whole the soup base is great at both places, but R101 has inferior noodles to AR. R101 has superior chicken (grilled and greater quantity) than AR (fried and less), and R101 has inferior pork to AR (bigger, better cut, and higher quality). R101 had nice mushrooms, egg, sprouts, fish cake, and other toppings/add ins to their Ramen. The grilled squid is comparable to Sam Woo's, but R101 has a sweet-spicy soy paste sauce that is tasty. However, recommend not using too much of the sauce (do not dip the pieces in it, just eat it with the drizzle on top and do not soak the crispy legs in it). The service was fast and seating available although crowded on a Sat night for early dinner. If eating there, the reason they have you order before seating is because they assign you a table number so they know where to take your food. So follow the directions of their signs and do not have your party safe a table till after you order or someone may ask you to move--we had to ask a guy to leave our table. Overall, would definitely go back here and highly recommend. Especially compared to the higher priced fancy restaurants that will give you less food in the area R101 is a great deal. read more

Place your order first at the counter, then pick a table to sit at. 1 star for the quality of the furniture (chairs for sitting). They get at least 1 star for having chairs for customers to sit on. In my case, however, after finishing my bowl of miso ramen, I turn to get my purse to get ready to leave. Hear a crack and I'm suddenly falling on the ground because the wooden chair leg broke. I'm 125 lbs. and in complete shock at what just happened. I know it's an accident and it could happen to anyone, anywhere. The owners need to invest in sturdier chairs. So happy we found this place. We ordered 4 Tonkatsu ramen and a mixed Hawaiian plate. The ramen definitely goes down in my top 10! Ramen is a favorite and often what our girls choose to eat out and this place didn't disappoint. Portion size was perfect. We got the medium spice but ended up requesting more. Flavor on the ramen is amazing. Toppings were perfect and the egg on top was a favorite. Loved that they had Hawaiian sun drinks! The toppings are definitely the best part and on point - tender and large portions of chasu, most bowls came with an entire marinated and perfectly medium boiled egg, and lots of bamboo and veggies. First, there's a sign at the door and counter that you must order before sitting which we did abide in but the person taking the order seemed impatient as our party of 10 were each placing their order. Hus facial expression showed annoyance instead of welcoming. (He's the guy with the earrings and we didn't see whether he has a name tag or not). The ramen broth was not very hot. Overall 4.5/5, but 1 of a few around the tri-valley. This one being the newest one (2020), I decided on finally one of these guys. Arriving around 11am, we were the first one in and just glancing at the menu from outside, the owner/manager opened the door and welcome us in and mentioned if we had any questions just ask. So right off, we sort of felt welcomed and the cashier too, was extremely friendly and albeit new was able to answer a few questions for us. I do say new cashier because he mentioned it in passing when he mis-rang me and instead of crediting my credit card back, he just gave me a $5 bill. Anyways, inside since it's a new location, the place itself was very bright and clean looking. As for the meal, I ordered the fried oysters for an appetizer. This was very good in terms of texture, not gooey and great flavor too. Beyond that, I ordered the black garlic ramen with a spicy heat level, both options were yummy. For me, their spicy had alittle kick to it, but I still had to put in more spice to it. But, the broth was nice and delicious and the ramen noodles still had a nice spring/Al dente feel to it. If this is like all the other places, I think I have to try out the different ramens along with their different sites around the valley but this one I think will do pretty good once the pandemic ends and people shop at the outlets again and want something slightly different. read more

Went to eat here a while ago after doing some shopping. I like how they had outdoor seating but I didn't like how you had to order inside first then go out and sit down. There wasn't much tables so if you come when it is a little busy, which I did, but luckily I came with someone so they sat down and I ordered. But if you come alone or no one sits down first then you won't have a place to sit and eat. The food was good, I ordered the Shoyu ramen and kaki fry. The broth was a little salty for my taste and the kaki fry was only good when you eat it right away. 1 star less just because of the outdoor seating part. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a long time and we finally made it. I love short ribs so I ordered the short rib plate to go. It cost me $16 and I couldn't eat the meat, the quality was the worst I've ever had, small pieces of bone all over the meat, which means to me either I got the bottom of marinade bag today or they really don't clean their meat. It's obviously the problem of the meat supplier for running the bones through the saws too fast, but also poor prep on the restaurant's side. By no means should short ribs be tossed from packing into a marinade without inspection for bone shards. First bite tasted like I dropped my sandwich at the beach and ate it. Second piece was worse, at first I thought it was chopped ginger or sesame seed, but then after I started eating them it became obvious this place doesn't know to properly prep short ribs. I won't ever be going to this place. It's dangerous to have rice size, sharp bone fragments in your food. Thankfully I didn't have my children to share with me this trip, as this could have been even worse! read more

I LOVE this place (and the other location on Fallon- I believe they have the same owner). I did not try to go for the BOGO- I wanted a quieter time, so I could explain my food allergy. I'm allergic to corn- which is a total bummer and requires explanation since it's basically the opposite of gluten free (which uses a lot of corn) and which people are more familiar with. Anyway, I felt the server here was exceptionally diligent in helping me with my allergy- she even brought out the ramen box for me to read - yup, cornstarch was the last ingredient. BUT I could still eat here!!! I had the vegetable ramen without ramen (but I could have the tofu!)- but with delicious vegetables. The stock is made from pork bones and whole chickens- and it's delicious. I tried to eat all my broth- but you get a huge bowl, and I just couldn't do it. The vegetables were crisp and fresh and the tofu was lovely. I really enjoyed myself and I am thrilled I could find anything to eat- so much of the time I can't eat anything at all at small restaurants- either because there is corn in everything or because they do not know what is in their food. If you have a food allergy, these folks will help you- just don't go in when it's really busy. read more

I wish this place was good but it's just not. The ramen was the first thing I tried and it was terrible. The soup was bland, the noodles pretty generic, and the slice of pork tasted pan fried instead of roasted. Definitely did not enjoy it. I went again to give them another shot and ordered the Kalbi plate. I mean you can't really mess up short ribs right? Totally wrong! It came out pale and rubbery with so much fat that didn't look seared at all. I can only imagine that the meat wasn't dried before cooking so the water on the surface was basically boiling the meat instead of browning it. I've avoided this place for awhile until recently because I thought maybe they've gotten better. So I order a bbq chicken and chicken katsu plate and some spam musubi. Surely no one could screw up spam musubi and fried chicken. Wrong again! The spam was mushy, rice was soggy, and the katsu was way too brown and over cooked! The funny thing is that this was the best meal I've ever had here. Based on all the positive reviews it seems like some people are at least getting good food here. Hopefully it stays that way for them. But for me I think I'm done with Ramen 101. read more
