Severe Food Poisoning -- And a Complete Lack of Compassion From the Owner On Friday, July 31st, we ordered three sushi rolls and a bento box from Roppongi Sushi for pickup. My husband waited almost 40 minutes longer than expected for the food. We have eaten here several times before and liked it. I ate significantly more of the sushi than he did. The next morning, I felt absolutely terrible. After about 12 hours, I became violently sick and threw up all of the sushi. I couldn't believe that after all that time, it was still coming back up. I have never been that sick. I was extremely weak and lethargic, could barely eat for days, and it took several days to feel normal again. I'm a breastfeeding mom to a 5-month-old and also have a 20-month-old, so being that sick was especially difficult. I nearly lost my milk supply because I could barely eat or drink, and I was so exhausted that I could barely help with my children. I called the restaurant Saturday afternoon to let the manager know what happened. Instead of asking if I was okay or expressing any concern, her first response was, "What roll did you eat?" When I told her which one I suspected, she said, "A lot of people ordered that," and offered to refund one roll. I explained how seriously sick I had been and how difficult it was to care for my children while feeling that way. I even asked her if she was a mother and how she would feel in my situation. Her response was, "Enough -- just stop already!" followed by "We work so hard." I understand restaurants work hard, I worked in restaurants for 10 years myself! but customers deserve compassion when they report becoming violently ill after eating their food. I wasn't looking for an argument--a little compassion would have gone a long way. She eventually refunded almost the entire order, but only after a very dismissive interaction. I would not have written this review if the owner had shown even a little compassion. She never followed up with me to see if I was ok. Unfortunately, after this experience, I will NEVER be returning to Roppongi Sushi, and it will probably be a very long time before I feel comfortable eating sushi again. read more

We stopped by this small casual spot in downtown Livermore and ordered the 3-item bento box along with the Polar Bear roll. The standout was definitely the beef teriyaki--tender, flavorful, and cooked just right. The salad was enjoyable, and the California roll was okay. The mixed tempura was crispy and well-prepared, though we were a little disappointed that it only included one shrimp along with the vegetables. The miso soup was unfortunately too salty for our liking. We also tried the Polar Bear roll, but it didn't taste as fresh as we had hoped, which took away from the experience. The service was good, and the servers were friendly and attentive throughout our meal. Overall, this was just an okay experience. The beef teriyaki was easily the highlight of the meal, but the overly salty miso soup, limited shrimp in the tempura, and lack of freshness in the Polar Bear roll kept the meal from standing out. As a long-time resident of Livermore, I can assert without hesitation that this is the most unprofessional business owner I have ever encountered. She openly challenges customers, attempts to make them feel guilty for raising issues, and shifts blame onto the customer rather than showing compassion. She will likely take screenshots of Yelp reviews to blame her staff instead of accepting responsibility. While the servers are excellent, the kitchen staff consistently fails to fulfill orders correctly or at all. Despite its prime location and good food, I am confident this place will not be in business much longer. read more

Really hit the spot! I came in on a Saturday for a take out order, and I was very impressed! The woman at the counter was very kind, affable, and hilarious. And my wait was very short, only about 15 to 20 minutes. The sushi was so so so delicious! I got the spicy scallop roll, the sake maki, the salmon skin roll, and the garlic edamame. A nice, cozy sushi spot in Downtown Livermore. A bit on the pricier side for sushi, but the quality is very fresh. The portion for the First Street roll is huge! Had mountains of salmon in it. We enjoyed our other rolls like the Polar bear and the Simba. The spicy garlic edamame wasnt spicy at all and didn't have much of a garlic flavor, more like a sweet chili sauce. Walked in and the place seemed quaint with ambient lighting, but it was a nice day so we sat outside. 14 pc sashimi for the price was pretty worth it and so my friend and I split. Our waitress forgot to ring in our order, so we got our food a lot later than when we sat down. She seemed really kind about the mistake and was really apologetic about it. All that to say I'm not sure if it was the wait or the fish but we absolutely CLEARED our plates. I have been going to Roppongi Sushi for years. I always loved it, but the last couple of times I was not happy with the service. First, I went to have lunch with my daughter. The restaurant was not so busy there were two server. The food took long time and when it was ready to be served, the waitress was busy chatting with one of the clients and it took another 10 minutes to bring it to my table. By the time we finished eating the restaurant was empty and the waitress didn't bring the check, she was just standing in-front of us but didn't pay any attention even though we were the only client. I went after that with my friend and her daughter and my daughter. We were eating our food, all our plates still full, and she came to us asking if we wanted a box!! That was so weird, then she was standing infront of us the whole time we were eating, showing disappointment on here face. It's like she wanted us to finish and leave. Even though there were other people sitting. I don't know why I left a tip for her. My daughter told me I shouldn't after that way of service. I don't think I will go again. read more

And I finally get to try their favorite Japanese restaurant. The sashimi slices are thick and fresh, we got 2 deluxe plates for the party of 7. My grandma ordered the salmon collar and it was amazing. We also got the 49ers roll, and the sexy roll which I recommend as well. Well, I recommend everything honestly. My first visit to Roppongi! They've been in Downtown Livermore for a while and I'd usually just pass by it all the time whenever I'm in the area. I had the chance to try it for the first time though, and ended up enjoying the food much more than I thought I would! We came with a larger group for a late Sunday lunch / early dinner, around 3-4 PM. They have both indoor and outdoor seating available. It was a hot day, so we opted for indoor seating but the estimated wait was 30 to 40 minutes. Fortunately there were plenty of shops in Downtown Livermore to keep us occupied, so we decided to wait it out. Our table was ready within that estimated range. Boy were the rolls here HEFTY. The rolls were generously filled and wrapped properly and the cuts of fish were also a great size. I ordered the Mango Paradise (comes with Salmon, Avocado, Cucumber topped with Salmon, Mango, Macadamia Nuts, Unagi Sauce & Mango Sauce, Tobiko) and the roll was delicious! The fish tasted fresh, the sauce that lied on top of the roll was super tasty. I really liked how well the mango complimented the salmon. Overall, rolls were impressive but I didn't try much else on the menu. I think they can definitely improve on the service aspect of things, but otherwise it was a good experience! read more

This is my favorite end-of-week lunch place, to celebrate surviving another one. Up until today, I always ordered the sushi lunch, which is 4 pieces of nigiri and 5 pieces of California roll. HOWEVER, there's a better way to do that, for the same $19.95. Order a bento with nigiri, get a bigger roll, get the same yummy soup and salad (best sushi-place salad around) plus a mound of rice, and throw in a third element. In my case, veggie gyoza. It's a nice pile of food for the money, quickly delivered. Since this is in the heart of "radio-free Livermore" it would be nice if they could offer wifi. No Verizon signal to be had, so you have to actually converse with someone. Eeek! read more

First off, this place isn't as busy on Sunday when the Farmer's market is around which was heaven sent. My bf, friend, and I originally wanted to go to Monica's and the wait was 1 hr 15 min. So we went to Roppongi. Plenty of tables, service was quick too. My bf and I ordered the Roppongi Roll, SF 49ers roll, Baked Lobster roll and Lion King. My friend ordered a beef udon. Then we got the chicken karaage to share. The chicken karaage was...interesting. It has rosemary which is unlike other places but in turn, not sure how I liked the rosemary. Probably could do without. Also while most places come with some form of kewpie mayo, this one used tonkatsu sauce which again, interesting combo. The usage of tonkatsu sauce is pretty good though so that was more of a good interesting. The Roppongi sushi is spicy but not overly so which was good. 49ers is a pretty standard roll all around. The fish was fresh. Now the baked rolls were amazing though. The lion king and the lobster rolls are similar to each other. Both baked and have a sauce on top. But in my opinion, the lion king roll is better. They gave plenty of fish on top and salmon was perfectly baked. I suppose my only complaint is that it seems to fall apart a bit easier than most places. So if there's a way to keep it a bit more together, that would be better. The taste and overall look is there though. If I end up back in Livermore anytime soon, this would be a place to return to. read more

It's no secret this is my favorite ramen spot in Livermore! This time we tried the Fat Boy Mix, caterpillar roll, and dragon roll. Caterpillar roll was a caterpillar roll (tasty! Nothing stands out about it) but dragon really impressed me! Definitely the tables favorite. The fat boy mix was interesting... if you're ordering it, definitely make it a share item. It's not the quantity of food that you'll want to share, it's that the dish is 60% stringy crab (?) on top which will be too overwhelming for one person. We thought the sushi on the bottom was tasty, and the fish chunks on top were good, but honestly the volume of crab on top was way too much. They could halve it and it would be much better. We also got the green tea ice cream for dessert and it was very good! As always, will be back :) read more

Ambiance is casual. Their sushi here is incredibly fresh, and they have some outstanding rolls. Today, we ordered the following: - **Livermore Roll:** Spicy tuna topped with salmon, a hint of macadamia nuts, jalapeño, and Unagi sauce. This combination creates a wonderful, flavorful roll. - **Avocado Cucumber Roll:** Refreshing and an excellent choice. - **Mango Salmon Roll:** Although not photographed, this is my favorite. I love sushi and have heard Roppongi come up in enough sushi conversations with local friends that I decided to forgo my go-to and give them a try for take out. While nothing was "bad", I wasn't overly impressed either. My initial impression when I opened everything up was "fishy" -- and not in a good way. For the first time I had to take tuna off of my specialty roll to want to finish it, and even then it was meh. Also, the roe I had added came in a separate container, rather than incorporated in the roll. Kind of impossible to use. All in all it just wasn't anything special. Was having Korean Food withdrawals so bad that I was searching Yelp and internally drooling over food images. Now that I've moved to the sticks AND my job moved to the edge of nowhere my options have dwindled down to practically nothing. Perseverance or self inflicted torture however you look at it resulted in a find - Poppongi Sushi had a bento box option for spicy pork! Convinced my lunch buddies to give it a try even though it was a bit of a hoof to get there from work, we scored parking in front and made it back to work in time - whew! For $20 out the door I got a 3 item combo with Spicy pork, Saba and mixed tempura. Tempura was a nice selection of veggies and a shrimp, Saba was huge for a lunch portion and very good. Spicy pork looked good, cooked perfectly with some charred bits, took a bite and it was deeelicious! I've found my Korean fix, maybe I can sneak some kimchi in for the full experience?! Also tried the lobster roll, California roll and gyoza and all were good. One person in our group commented that the rolls were heavy with the rice but I like rice. read more

Roppongi never disappoints! It has been a while since I've taken my daughters to Roppongi but we walked in on a Sunday around 6pm. We were given the option to sit inside or outside. We chose to sit inside mf were seated immediately. We ordered the chicken katsu for my 9 year old and my 12 year old and I shared 3 rolls: 1. Zombie roll : I usually love raw fish rolls but this roll is so unique and yummy. Deep fried jalapeño with cream cheese, Unagi & Avocado on inside and smoked salmon & macadamia nuts plus some sauces drizzled on the outside. 2. Crazy Horse : so fresh and delicious and sized well. No skimping. fresh tuna, salmon & albacore, avocado, cucumber, kaiware & tobiko. 3. Flamer roll : too fun not to order atleast once. They wrap this roll in fire and light the plate on fire before delivering it to your table. They unwrap the roll and extinguish the fire right in front of you. Shrimp tempura, spicy tuna & unagi inside and salmon, yellowtail, macadamia nuts and tobiko on top plus drizzled sauces. The pork was tender and nice size pieces for the most part for easy eating - was a few large piece of fat but not bad compared to the amount of pork you got. Soup was tasty, salad was nice but the huge chucks of tomato would have been better cut smaller... Yaki Soba noodles - nice portion - noodles were a little clumpy up but might just have been cause it was take out and sat a little while but perfectly cooked. Decent amount of chicken and vegetables. We can on a Sunday evening and were immediately seated at one of their outdoor tables in which there are plenty - probably more than available in their limited indoor space. The menu boasts the traditional sushi rolls, specialty rolls, and a variety of dinner plates and bento boxes. Well "boxes" are a misnomer here because they actually serve these on regular plates. We ordered a few rolls including the Lion King and the Rainbow rolls, stir fried yakisoba noodles, and two two item bentos (for a third item it's only $3.50 more which seems like not a bad deal at all). Portion sizes are plenty and justify the higher prices for this centrally located restaurant in the heart of downtown Livermore. We all agreed that this was equally on par and on top of one of our other memorable Japanese restaurants in Dublin. Service was adequate, however, the food was amazingly perfect.
