Subject: Formal Complaint Regarding Incorrect Pricing and Unprofessional Conduct by Cashier
I am writing to formally complain about an upsetting experience I had at your store involving a cashier who was extremely rude and unprofessional toward me.
I regularly shop at Ralphs and spend a significant amount of money there. This is a store that my wife and I visit frequently, and we have always considered Ralphs a place where we should be treated with courtesy and respect.
During my recent visit, I purchased bottled water that was clearly advertised in the water section with a sign stating 3 for $10. However, at checkout, the cashier charged me $3.99 per bottle.
I politely pointed this out to her and explained that the water was advertised as 3 for $10. Her response was that the system was showing $3.99. I told her that I understood, but that I was not concerned about the amount of money--I was concerned because the advertised price clearly said 3 for $10.
She asked me where the sign was, and I told her it was in the water section. She went to check and then returned. Instead of addressing the situation professionally, she very rudely told me that the sign said $3.99. I explained to her that I felt she was being rude, but she continued responding to me with the same disrespectful attitude.
There were other customers around us, and her behavior made me feel embarrassed and uncomfortable. I eventually told her that it was okay and that it wasn't about the money. I paid for my items and was prepared to leave.
However, because I wanted to make sure I was not mistaken, I asked my wife to stay with the cart while I went back to the water section. I personally took a picture of the water and the advertised 3 for $10 sign. I returned to the register and showed the cashier the picture.
Even after seeing the picture, her response was again rude and dismissive. She simply said that the system showed $3.99. At that point, I told her that an apology would have been a much more appropriate response, especially after I had shown her the advertised price.
Instead of apologizing or acknowledging the issue, she turned her back to me and continued working.
Unfortunately, the situation became even more upsetting as we were leaving. We had to turn around because the exit we were using was closed. At that point, the same cashier was assisting another customer purchasing liquor. I heard her say something about me to the customer, after which they both laughed. When she noticed that I had seen what happened, she immediately stopped and put on a straight face.
I found this behavior extremely embarrassing and disrespectful. Regardless of whether there was a pricing error or a misunderstanding, there is no reason for a customer to be treated this way, discussed in front of other customers, or laughed at by an employee.
I want to emphasize that this complaint is not about the few dollars involved. It is about how I was treated as a customer. If there is a pricing discrepancy, I expect the employee to handle it professionally, verify the advertised price, and communicate respectfully. I should not have to feel humiliated for simply pointing out a price that was displayed in the store.
My wife and I shop at Ralphs very frequently and spend a considerable amount of money there. We value our relationship with the store, which is why this experience was particularly disappointing.
I respectfully ask that management:
1. Review the pricing issue involving the water advertised at 3 for $10.
2. Review the cashier's conduct toward me, including her rude responses and refusal to acknowledge the advertised price.
3. Look into what happened at the exit when she spoke about me to another customer and they laughed.
4. Address this behavior appropriately so that other customers do not experience the same treatment.
I am happy to provide the photograph I took of the water and the 3 for $10 sign if needed.
I hope Ralphs will take this complaint seriously. I am not looking for special treatment; I simply expect to be treated with basic courtesy and respect when shopping at a store that my family supports regularly.
