As a loyal customer of this establishment for over two decades, I have consistently visited the deli and meats department at least once a month. However, I am compelled to rate this establishment one star due to a particularly unpleasant experience with a female deli employee whose first name begins with the letter "J." Despite my frequent visits, the overall customer service in the deli and meats department has declined. The season butchers have been replaced with individuals lacking the necessary experience and customer courtesy that were previously present. Over the past three months, I have encountered the same issues with this particular employee. It is important to note that the fee charged for slicing a Tri Tip into a carton container is not the primary concern. The issue lies in the employee's behavior and attitude, specifically their unwillingness to properly wrap the sliced meat. This has occurred on multiple occasions, most recently at the checkout counter when the cashier pull the foil-wrapped package from the plastic bag causing the juices of the meat to spill all over the counter. This has happened to me every time this employee has served me. The Tri Tip sliced meat is dry and devoid of juices due to this careless employee's failure to wrap the meat carefully. It is imperative that this situation be addressed. Management should provide this employee, "J," with proper training on how to wrap sliced food correctly. Additionally, it is crucial the ambiance that all employees, including the deli and butcher employees, maintain a pleasant and friendly demeanor. A salutation is always appreciated. Despite these concerns, the BBQ remains outstanding as always. read more

So super nice people. Bbq comes lukewarm. Ribs were extremely dry as was sausage. (Dry sausage - how?!) The tri-tip and chicken were good - and the portions for the prices are good. Tri-tip was definitely a win. The corn was relatively flavorless. The standout is actually the barbecue sauce. I'm from Texas. To me, this isn't bbq. This is some smoked meats and a side of sauce. No real side options, no bread or pickles/onions, so I can't really recommend for BBQ. Dry sausage is a huge red flag - as are dry ribs. And no brisket. What?? read more

I was told by a few locals to try the baby back ribs. I ordered a 1/2 slab of baby back ribs, and a corn on the cob. My total was around $16. There was a line but it moved very quickly. You can smelll the smokers half a block away. The restaurant is just a counter and does not have seating. The prices are great! The corn of the cob was only $2! There are lots of desserts available as well. The ribs have a great smoky flavor and pull off the bone fairly easily. . If you like sauce, you will need to purchase it on the side. This local market is so "handy" in every sense of the word! It may be small but every aisle is packed with popular brands & items. I stopped by a few days before Thanksgiving to buy meat for my Assyrian Stew and found the line in the back. I was surprised at how quickly it moved.The meat department in the back has the best cuts of beef, pork, chicken and more. They also have salads, sandwiches and hot food to go. They have a freezer aisle with Jeni's ice cream! Yum! If you smell it, you know you are close. Ive been seeing or shall I say smelling this place the last four years while in Burbank. This last drive by, I decided to stop. It is kind of strange. It is a local market but they sell BBQ and all the fixings. There are two lines that take up certain aisles. One line leads to the deli. The other line leads to the registers. Both lines were long. Th deli line offers what every deli has. Sandwich meats, cheeses, salads. It also offers sandwiches, bbq chicken, tritip, etc. I also saw people ordering breakfast burritos at around $8.50. I picked up side dishes. Potato salad at about $4.00 a pound. Mac n cheese at 6.00 a tub and baked beans at $6.00. Everything was great. What was'nt great was the parking. It was a little tight. The soups at Handy's is hit or miss. Pass on the albondigas soup and go for the chicken and rice. The tri tip sandwich is ok. It's better by the pound. I didn't car for the ribs. It's a little dry. Definitely get the chips and salsa. I haven't had any of the dinners but I would definitely try the garlic chicken next time. Everything is pretty inexpensive. Sandwiches are massive and inexpensive. One of my favorite places to come and get some sandwiches on the way out for the day. They have a nice variety of sandwiches to choose from, on the weekend they're outside with some big barbecues grilling. Which fills the air with the delicious aroma. If I go during the week I like to get a bologna sandwich or a mortadella and if I go on the weekend I get the tri tip sandwich. The tri tip sandwich is a bit juicy so if you're gunna eat it make sure you have some napkins. $13.99 for the sandwich or a pound of meat. These sandwiches are a nice size. Which I really enjoy because it's a good price as well. We like to stop here if we're going to the park or a trip to the mountains. I can eat and I usually get two servings from it. The location is a little small so you might feel like you're always in someone's way. Everyone is nice tho so it makes navigating through the store a bit easier. They also have a pretty good selection of beers to choose from as well as a variety of different items throughout the sore. I've been meaning to visit this place for quite awhile (in my earlier days when I used to work around the area over 10+ years ago) and one Saturday morning took me here. The weekend bbq is the best time to visit! You can easily find the whole city here (or maybe at Portos, haha). It is a local favorite. The hype is real. The market also a decent selection of alcohol and coffee along with produce. Despite it looking like a convenient store (like a 7-11), it offers a lot more for its size. Service is friendly and there's plenty of workers (except for the deli area). Their tri-tip sandwich was delicious and easily satisfied 2 adults. Pricing is very reasonable and reminds me of the bbq you get in SD or Central California. We also purchased potato salad and corn bread as well, and definitely couldn't get to the corn bread. As a local, I used to love this place but now i use it in emergencies only. I've noticed a steady decline in customer service and friendliness at this store over the years. Staff often come across as rude and uninterested in helping customers. At the deli, I waited about 10 minutes while four employees stood behind the counter. No one acknowledged me, even though I was the only customer there. When someone finally spoke, it was to rudely say, "Are you waiting? You're in the wrong line if you need service." That experience was frustrating and unprofessional. Additionally, the store's cleanliness has become a concern. It appears dirty and in need of proper upkeep. I noticed flies around the produce and even saw what looked like baby roaches, which is very concerning. Handy Market has been around longer than I've been alive. It was founded in 1970 and upon entering, it certainly feels dated but there's something to be said about all the colorful and varied produce that's neatly displayed down its narrow aisles, almost like a Wes Anderson film. Imagine rows of radicchio, rainbow chard, exquisite endive, squash blossoms, sunchokes and artichokes, fennel with their fronds tangled in long red chilies surrounded by pungent herbs like perilla, lovage, tarragon. An extra star just for that. But... My only gripe is their weekly Saturday BBQ. Through the years I have enjoyed both kinds of ribs, the brisket, sausages, turkey and chicken that they cook and smoke right outside in the parking lot. Even if you don't see it, you'll smell it within a couple blocks. I can't think of a better way to promote a bbq business and Handy Market knows it. They're counting on all the new customers who get lured in by the intoxicating scent of grilled meats on live fire to try this sad, sorry excuse that they call BBQ. All the meats are dry, tasteless and overcooked. They do not season any of the meat, not even a lick of salt. They want you to buy their sugary bbq sauce and baste them on the grill. Meaning you still have to finish cooking it at home but it was tasty enough and the price was low so it was worth doing for many years. Lately though, it's been expensive and inedible. The quality of all the meat has become sus and I was sold the driest beef ribs with texture like leather, that they probably dug up from the back of a freezer and a smelly turkey leg that's left over from like, Thanksgiving. My homemade bbq sauce could not save either meat and suffice to say I will never order barbecue from here again. What's happened to you, Handy Mart? I just can't believe you've slipped so far. This is the worst bbq in all of LA and I cannot recommend anyone eating here. Those brave souls who do not heed this cautionary tale cannot say you haven't been warned. Good luck. read more

I finally made it to Handy Market in Burbank after an errand. Husband has heard people rave about it, and let me just say -- the sandwiches? Worth the buzz. Small quaint family owned grocery store that never disappoints- known for their amazing meats and sandwiches and has lots of local food as well. Today I got their famous bbq tri tip sandwich. I ordered ahead of time , you can order in person but always a line (because it's that good!!) this is only available on saturdays and they cook it up all day outside the market. Love how handy market also helps and supports other local businesses, the new magnolia corner gets all their meats and more from there. As I commence my bakery tourism, some of the most slept on places to get fresh baked goods are your local supermarket, whether corporate or small business. Right before you are next to be called in line for the deli, to your left, there is a shelf of big huge loafs and there are some of the best and moist sweet breads. I am always unlucky and still haven't been able to get the chocolate chip bread option so this round is lemon poppy seed and carrot bread. Lemon poppy seed is a 4.5/5. I love the addition of the shaved almonds on top to give it a crunch. Carrot bread is a 4/5. You can never go wrong with carrot but the following day, it actually stales quicker vs gets moist-er, which is interesting. Great addition to a sweet crumble baked on top of the loaf. I hardly want to let this secret out- best meat counter in the city. The guys behind the counter know their cuts of meat, know how to tie, roll, wrap, etc... for any recipe. If it's your first time, you WILL get confused trying to find the line. But once you know, you'll know. They set up a BBQ right in the parking lot on Saturday mornings, and the smell alone pulls you in. The staff were super friendly, and the line moved fast, which I appreciated. Handy Market is an awesome local market to do a quite grocery shopping trip or any supplies you need to host a party! Great selection of wine and beer, and full deli with delicious sandwiches and premade salads etc. I've heard the cookies are amazing, but unfortunately they didn't have any when I stopped by. I've also heard amazing things about the bbq they have on the weekends! I recently ordered a Turkey sub sandwich and it was delicious and filling. I recommend eating it soon after you order it cause the bread gets a little soggy! They have lots of produce and snacks, pretty much everything you need! People at the deli were super nice and helpful. The one downside of my visit was that the cashier who was there that day was an older woman who made an awkward comment about the customer in front of me. It was a pretty closed minded comment regarding their appearance. Luckily the customer wasn't upset and handled it with grace. It was just a little uncomfy of a situation. This market is a Burbank gem! If you're looking to give less of your money to mega-corporations, Handy is an excellent alternative for a grocery store. I know most of these reviews are about the BBQ, which is indeed delicious, but don't sleep on the market itself! Although more of a "market" and less "super" in size, the store has pretty much everything you need. There is fresh produce, dairy, baked goods, a freezer section, and household products. They also have an incredible beer selection with lots of local, craft, and hard-to-find beers. They carry a lot of local products, like Pasadena Pies. The back counter of the store is the meat and deli counter. You can get great quality meats to take home, or order a sandwich, deli side or hot food to go. They post a weekly menu of hot food available, including my favorite $12.99 dinner with a main and 2 sides. We frequently order the Pork Chili Verde, Cilantro Rice and Beans (I believe that's the Wednesday special!) which is enough for more than one meal and is also very tasty. At that price, that is cheaper than buying groceries to make your own dinner at home these days amirite? Make sure to call ahead; they usually run out of the nightly special dinner in the early evening. But if you call, they'll put it aside and keep it heated for you. On the weekends, they BBQ outside! I've also heard that their in-house catering is great, and I want an excuse to try it someday. The employees here are all very, very nice and helpful. I love the small town, local grocery store vibes. If I lived within walking distance, I don't think I would need to go to another supermarket very often. read more

We love Handy Market! It's a small family run market, but it more than makes up for its small footprint with a great selection. But what they're really known for is their Saturday barbecue. I have come for Saturday barbecue for many years. I had out-of-town company and I wanted to show them how wonderful the ribs, the chicken and all the fixings were. It was so disappointing I was so embarrassed. The ends of the ribs were burnt to a crisp and it was so difficult to cut through them. They were so dry, tough and tasteless.And the chicken also was so dry and burnt. I know this isn't the usual but my goodness it was bad. I was there about 2:30 PM and usually at that time everything is still so good. I'll definitely give them another chance, but this had to be a one off of so terrible. read more
