My husband and I came here for dinner on a Friday around 730/8 and the place was not full, I've fact we were able to get a seat by the window. To drink my husband went with a pilsner and I ordered a cocktail (I don't remember the name but out included chili infused tequila which I really enjoyed). I ordered the fish tacos and half a dozen oysters. Mini rodizio which was just enough food for him and offered a little of everything which was also well seasoned. This place is awesome. I went with a crew last night, most of us being Portuguese and from southern New England. This place was just like home. This is a nicely decorated restaurant with great food, service and a pleasant atmosphere to go along with it. Try the ribeye sandwich and you won't be disappointed. The lighting is beautiful at night, consisting of a blue light that reflects elegantly against the glass surfaces all throughout. This place was SO disappointing! I was excited about this new "chic" eatery in my neighborhood. The decor was nice enough, and the drinks had at the bar (while waiting for my parents to arrive) were decent. The food though was TERRIBLE. How can you mess up CHICKEN? It was SO dry. My salad, SUB par. They used CANNED hearts of palm. For a $16 salad, that palm better be not from a can! The steak was also very dry. For the prices I paid, I could've bought nice produce and fancy meats and cooked them better myself. Not worth it. I walk by this place every day, so I was greatly anticipating its opening. Unfortunately I was not impressed. The restaurant's identity is conflicted. The menu strives toward fine dining, but there is a sportsbar vibe. I can see how this could be some kind of hybrid, but here the combination seems incongruous. As others have commented, the decor is quite nice. However, the effect is undone by the large TVs hanging over the bar. There are very few mains that are not seafood. This is fine with me, but it would help if the appetizers and sides weren't just more seafood. I had a salted cod dish that had absolutely no flavor (not even salt). My dining companion got a whole grilled fish, which turned out to be pretty good. However, he was given only a butter knife to filet it, and the staff were baffled and slow to respond when we asked for a knife that we could use. If you are looking for seafood in Greenpoint, there are way better places. read more

I've been here many times before and my family hosted a lot of events here. However, Sunday May 20th - we had our nephew's baptism. It was absolutely horrible. It was a very hot and humid day, they had NO AC running- only the fan. Our party had about 50 people and the party next to us had about 25. We never felt the fan and everyone was taking off whatever layers they could to stay cool. It was very hard to enjoy yourself when you can feel your blood boiling. They also dropped the ball on service. Our party had two tables, the first table got their food first. After about 45 mins the second table - well half of the second table got some of the food and about 30 mins later my side got their food. That's absolutely embarrassing in my opinion. Overall I dont believe we will be coming back here again. I would advise against having any type of event on a hot day, you will melt! read more

We go here all the time, and since our recent trip to Portugal and the Azores, it's clear that this is Azorean foods don't mainland Portuguese. We love the owner and the staff, they treat us well each time. I always get the grilled oysters, love them with melted brie on top. I also get the stuffed lobster regularly. A highlight of the menu. Good place to watch sports. Service is nice. The roast chicken was meh, buuuut the chimichurri is came with was by far the best chimichurri I have had in NYC. I know, it.s a lot of credit- but it.s the truth. It was even better than the chimichurri I make. The beef platter was ok....I think I should try other things to get a better perspective of their plates. But food was meh EXCEPT for the chimichurri sauce. Excellent chimichurri. Had dinner here recently and overall I really enjoyed the meal. I think it's more of a 3.5. The space is gorgeous as it was an old auto body shop converted into a restaurant. We were a group of 6 and ordered 2 beers, 3 bottles of wine, 4 starters, each an entree, dessert cognac, and 2 desserts -- and port wine complements of the owner. So I think we got a fair share taste of the menu. Everyone left super full and happy! It was a pretty good meal, but nothing stood out as "I need to have this again!" or "I want more!" If there was a half star rating on Yelp, this place would receive a 3.5 but lets be positive and round up! 4 stars. I am somewhat of a regular here but one of my closest friends practically lives here and that's how I found out about Raizes. My biggest recommendation is the Churrico burger. At first it looks intimidating and may seem difficult to finish by its sheer size but this flavorful entree is one of my go-to's here. The patty is large, the veggies fresh (that relish is on point!) and the fries complement it very well for $13. There is a sense of joyful "itis" upon completion of this burger and it will leave you feeling full several hours after. I'm not usually big on appetizers but their Yucca fries are great and the sauces given with them really bolster the flavor. Also the pork empanadas are full of piggy goodness and very tender and well put together. Though I'm not much of a seafood guy, my friend is, and he recommends the lobster if you're into that kinda stuff. The salads are also full of zest and well put together. My only knock on any of the entrees I've had here is the steak - it is far too chewy and the unenjoyable kind of dense that makes it's $24 price tag worthless. I haven't had the "all you can eat meat" that they offer off a sword but it's there if you want it! The alcohol selection is good but a little expensive in my opinion. I enjoyed the Moose Milk Ale they had, but I think they're getting rid of it for something else. The service is hit and miss.. meaning that upon your arrival and when you get your food you're checked up on regularly.. however after you order and wait it's hard to get extra water poured or otherwise. But usually it's pretty good. All in all, this place is great to eat and the location and design is well done and it "Raizes" the bar on the culinary experience in Greenpoint. read more

I love the decor of this place and how they have all the names of Portuguese towns on the walls. The food was good had the skirt steak which was cooked medium rare how I like it. The mashed potatoes tasted good also. I also had codfish croquettes which were tasty I'm my opinion but maybe a tiny tiny bit undercooked. Lastly I love the fact that they kept the Chevy Nova on the roof, it used to be an auto parts store probably before I was even born. That car is a staple in the neighborhood. Went there last night, got seated fairly fast but then nobody acknowledged we were seated for a good 15 minutes: no water, no server, no sigh that anyone were there to take our order. After 20 minutes, my friend and I just walked out and left. If you are advertising a 'rodizio', it's also common practice to have a hot/cold buffet available which I didn't see. I just came here tonight with my girlfriend. I had passed by this establishment a few times and was always packed, so I said let's try it. Everyone was very nice and the restaurant inside looked incredible. I ordered a Hendricks Gin and tonic , which came out as sapphire blue gin and seltzer, was not what I ordered but was charged as a hendricks. My girlfriend had a ginger ale, was your typical fake .. We both got the rodizio meat. It came with a salad , which was excellent as well as olives, some bread, small cup of rice and beans , cut fries or mashed, and kale. We had the mashed. No the meat comes, what bothered us both was that it didn't come out continuous. There was only one guy serving everyone. You literally was given one piece of chicken that was even seasoned and you waited around. Then you had to look for the server to cue the guy over for steak. That wasn't seasoned very well at all either. All the meats were below normal tasting. We were served a total of 5 meats and had to wait every time. Our waiter finally comes by and says oh it looks like you hit that wall , I looked at him and said we both only had 5 pieces of meat, wtf ????. I was fed up at this point with the lack of service and the quality overall with the meats in general , down to the hendricks gin that I was charged for and it wasn't the gin I ordered. This place could be great , but it's not. I definitely don't recommend this place. What's really funny is that it says it's portuguese and it's menu is not even really portuguese but rather half , Nantucket. I wasn't pleased at all. read more

I had my son's First Communion there 2 yrs ago and was very happy with everything , so when my sister came and asked me , I was thrilled to recommend this place to her. We just had the party today and it was a huge disappointment. First, food was fine, no complaints there, drinks great , bit on a strong side, service ok. We came at 1 o'clock : family and friends celebrating First Communion, and everything was fine until 3: 30 when my sister was told to " wrap it up , because I have 55 people coming in at 4 pm" Mind you we haven't even had the cake or coffee yet. The quests were refused drinks at around 4 pm and and 4:20 were were given a check and basically asked or rather told to leave. When my sister protested , and said this was not part of the original agreement , the lady, insisted that she told us and end of the conversation. Had we had known this , we would have made party reservation at a different restaurant. She had the audacity to tell us that we didn't leave any deposit, mind you the reservations was made in February, so she had plenty of time to ask for deposit if she wanted one. I live 2 blocks from this joint & have noticed how popular it's been since it opened, so my friend and I decided to stop in there last night to check it out, sit at the bar and watch the Seattlel/San Fran game. The margaritas were nothing special, but not awful-I've definirely had better. The cuban sandwiches were good, but the bread they were on was a nightmare. Who makes cuban sandwichs on a kaiser roll? Yuck. The bartender was nice, but a little clueless as far as the food was concerned. I asked him what was better, the cuban sandwich or the shrimp poboy, and he replies, "Well, the shrimp poboy is like breaded shrimp on 2 pieces of bread." Okay, thanks for not answering my question, dude., I know what it is... The portugese wine was awesome, so I will go back for more of that & will try something of the seafood variety next time. read more
