They would bring the fries directly from the fryer, the malts were twisted way above the rim of the glass and the burgers were never disappointing. Prices creeped up but still worth their satisfying meal But lately, the hamburgers are cooked and sitting in the side of the grill in preparation of the rush hour and possible stragglers. They are dried out, cold and tasteless. The malts barely top the rim but the fries are still hot. I'm willing to wait for a freshly cooked hot tasty burger even if the price inched up. But when we are talking about going to the Kewpee for lunch, it's a flat no from me now. Allentown Kewpee does the same. Very disappointed. (2026)

Let me start by saying this. I love kewpee, I grew up eating…read morekewpee, my love for it is undying and will never change. I love going for lunch because they are quick and efficient and I never have issues. Until you enter the night shift. It has been this way for years. You're driving along, hungry and fat as hell. Also broke as hell. You remember where you can get cheap, good food. You change directions and start the journey there. You take the curve and pull into the parking lot narrowly avoiding getting t boned by the Lima crackies all while having to dodge the homeless and craters in the lot. You see the drive thru is behind the building so you know it's a short line. Your first thought, this must be a quick wait right? Absolutely, undeniably INCORRECT. When I tell you to have your wills written out before this, I mean it. Give the house to Susie, the car to Jeremy, and if you don't know who to give your stuff too, don't worry, you'll have all the time ever given to you to debate on it. For the love, take your hungry ass to McDonald's at night. Every. Single. Time. I come here at night and it's like everybody working is high on God knows what and have just worked a 12 hour shift prior. Zero customer service. You pull up to the speaker that somehow witnessed the first and the Second World War and made it out on top and get your order taken. (No hate toward the speaker, just the voices behind it) By the time your order is taken you're already behind on getting ready for tomorrow morning. Might as well call off work. Here's the cherry on top. You finally reach the window after multiple blood clots have formed in your legs from the wait that are slowly making their way toward your brain. Boom. The worker opens the window. Stares at you for a good while before saying your total, sounding utterly unsure. You hand them your card. They take a good look at it like they have never seen such thing before as they slip their greasy arm back in the window. Now you wait, wait some more, wait, before the window opens and they hand you the receipt and card back. Window shuts again. When it opens, they are normally talking to themselves while handing you your food and drinks. DO NOT MAKE EYE CONTACT. Then you tell them thank you. Pro tip- do not speak a word. It's like if they interact with you in the slightest Momma Kewpee will come from the back and blow their dome smooth off. Finally, you pull away with your food wondering if you missed Christmas. You park. Hungry asf. Open the bag. Fried upside down. Burger slopped in there. No napkins. No salt packets for they plain ass fries. Pie. With no sign of a fork. To top it all off? All of it is cold. They must expect you to eat your pie like a slice of pizza. I've never seen anything like it. You're gonna sit there and wallow and remember all the good times you came here during the day. Perfect staff. Perfect experience, perfect food. Then you'll look back at your sad ass food and wish you were at McDonald's because at least your food would be hot. All in all. And take what I say heavily. Avoid the night shift unless you have nothing to live for and no family to make it home to.

There's a…read morediner menu letter board up on the wall, yellow with age, announcing the flavors of milkshakes and ice cream. It's from the 60s and probably hasn't changed since they put it up 65 years ago. There's a whiteboard on the back wall with the special for the day written out. Bacon egg and cheese omelette or a sausage egg and cheese sandwich on toast. Five dollars. The kind of place with a few locals sitting at a booth having their morning coffee, one of the waitresses offering Jim the last donut because they know he will want it. He accepts it. This is, in my mind, a classic American small town diner. The kind of place I grew up, eating in my hometown of 500 people. It's not high cuisine, there's nothing fancy about the food although I did come across a few things I had never seen before on the menu. Fried mush. Meat grits specials, like the scuttle butt and the chili Bob. An age old, but perfected recipe of eggs, meat, cheese, and a starch either potatoes ( homefries) or toast. The coffee is weak and not much flavor to it but, to be honest, it's exactly what you would expect in a place like this and there's something comforting about that. Honest, simple food made day and a day out, catering to the local crowd and a few roadway, travelers like myself who happen to come across it. There's a certain charm and depth to places like this that have been lived in day and day out by the same people for decades. For those like up rounded, there's the nostalgia and connection to the many other people having the same experience day after day in communities across the United States. Forgive me if I wax nostalgia can get a little sentimental here, but this morning's dining experience definitely elicited that for me. I hope you can find your own version of this sometime today or in the near future.
