Great Burgers and a Chocolate Malt that's out of this world. Need to come back to try the pie.

This place has been on my list for a long time, so when we were passing through Lima, we just had to check it out. I picked this location because of the art deco building. We had to find street parking because there was nowhere to park. We ordered burgers, fries, a small soda, a medium malt, and a slice of sugar cream pie. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The way they do things is a little different. They put a tray right in front of you and prepare your order as you watch. Very efficient! An interesting thing to note is that the small soda is the smallest soda cup I've ever seen. It holds around 6 ounces, so I recommend ordering the large because it's only 30 cents more. My cheeseburger was under $4 for 1/4 lb, so very reasonably priced. I selected my toppings (tartar sauce, onions, lettuce, and pickles), and my hubby got a double cheeseburger with bacon and added miracle whip, lettuce, onions, and tomato. Another interesting thing is that they use miracle whip instead of mayo. They also use butter lettuce, which I've never seen on fast food burgers. It was a nice touch. Our burgers were really good, but my hubby wouldn't get miracle whip again because it has an overpowering flavor. The fries were good, though a bit dry. The malt was like a chocolate Wendy's frosty, but so much better! It was really busy the whole time we were there, including a nonstop drive thru line that went into the street. Kewpee's is obviously very popular with the locals, and I can see why. read more

I have been eating at Kewpee for over 60 years. It was the best hamburger place for decades. Now it is a tarnishes and declining brand. Ordered two hamburgers last night. Took 20 minutes to get then and they were cold. East side location was leaderless and employees moved listlessly and without direction. I wont be back. read more

My family has been eating at Kewpee for 4 generations-it's that good. The food is always hot, fresh, and DELICIOUS. Simple, but so so so good. AND reasonably priced! Please don't overcook the burgers!! Edges were black and burnt. Otherwise I like Kewpee's

Passed through Lima on our way on vacation and stopped here for lunch. What a delightful establishment. Felt very old school in the best possible way. The burgers are no-fuss and tasted like FRESH fast food if that makes sense. The way burgers used to taste when I was young. Restaurant was clean, has old-school diner decor. Giant Kewpie dolls in the corners are a fun touch. The employees were cheerful and kind and were very efficient. Got the Special burger, fries and small malt shake. Fries tasted so good with the malt. Just all around very satisfied with our experience. Will be back when we pass through again. Great local gem! Stopped by from a co-workers recommendation. I had a single cheeseburger, fries, and lemonade slush. Small is SMALL, feels like a dixie cup. Large was 32 oz. I loved the kitch atmosphere. It was BUSY for a Wednesday at lunch, cars lined up around the block. Note the parking lot was small, had to circle around a few times to get the best spot. Was surprised by digital menu boards, felt a little out of place with this spot. My favorite was the fresh pie. I was passing through so went with what would hold up best - pecan. Great choice. The food was amazing, taste great and the prices are very reasonable especially in a time when things for the mist seem over priced. The staff was very friendly and quick with the orders. It's a small but very cozy place. The inside was clean and even for being small and cozy there's plenty of seating. This was my first time in many years of coming to Lima with Broadway Tours and finally getting to try Kewpee, however long as my shows don't come in on Sundays as they are closed that day, it definitely isn't going to be my last visit. read more

I'm an architectural historian and literally came here for the building, but will come back for the burgers! We heard about this adorable fast food spot from friends and drove to Lima to check it out. It's definitely worth it ! With fast service, delicious food, and really affordable prices there is seriously nothing bad to say about this little gem. We ordered in the drive-thru and the line moved quickly. The line of cars did overflow their small parking lot, so be aware that you may need to wait on the street. (Staff working the takeout window was masked, but I can't speak to how they were applying Covid guidelines inside the restaurant since my view was limited.) read more

Kewpee is a diamond in the rough - literally. It was my first time to Lima, and while it was sad to see a once prosperous city full of empty storefronts, Kewpee's atmosphere and flavor quickly transformed me back to a once lush time for the city. The husband is from Lima, so every time we visit, we hit Kewpee. He's biased. I'm food fussy. This place is historical, so I like that. There's the spot on the lot where the lazy susan that turned cars used to live before they bought the adjoining lot. The entire place has an old diner vibe. The line is long - both inside and drive thru. We opted for the later. Some thing I really love about this place: The price. Is this the best burger I've ever had? Not by any means. But it's good. And for under $3...I'm not sure you can find better. Extras like tomatoes and bacon are reasonably priced. Miracle whip is an option for .10 for those who like that. The drive thru: Despite a long order of three burgers all with vastly different toppings, over a speaker, our entire order was exactly right. And the line moved at a good clip. The malts: so good. Fresh pies daily. The toppings are fresh. Like I said, the burger isn't a revelation, but it's a solid smash burger thin patty. The bacon is the real deal. The fries are also okay. Wish they'd been hotter and saltier, but again...they were solid and inexpensive. It's a cute little place worth the visit. read more

Kewpees is an experience. My family and I will make a day trip to Lima just to get some of their burgers and malts. This trip was the first trip with my kids and my son was very intrigued because my mother speaks so highly of them. The food was super hot and fresh and the chocolate malt was amazing. I prefer this location just because of how oldschool it looks. It's almost as if you are time traveling, however, they do have a new digital menu board in the drive-thru. Sitting down in the inside and taking in the sites of small-town Lima is a must. Another patron saw us eating as a family and said that it was a beautiful to see us bonding. Over priced for the quality anymore if I'm paying that price I'll go to 5 guys the quality is better and it's worth it! The lady in the drive through gave an attitude as soon as you pull up to order and when you're paying maybe she was having a bad day but idk probably just gonna avoid that place. The drive-thru was so long that it ended up taking up a lane on the street, and so I parked in the parking lot outside. Unfortunately, it was raining outside, and I had to call the restaurant to ask where the front entrance was. When I walked up to the counter to order, I was greeted by four friendly middle-aged women. One of them asked where I was from, and another asked me if I played piano (I have pretty long fingers). 1. Double cheeseburger, $3.50 Make sure you specifically ask for what you want on it. Otherwise she'll just give you buns, patty, and cheese. If you get everything on it except olives and with bacon added, it's a pretty good burger, almost comparable to In N Out. 2. Chocolate malt, $3.25 Mediocre. Basically just chocolate ice cream. 3. Fries, $1.45 Mediocre, but I had them cold. Also, you have to go outside to get to the men's restroom, which sucks. Ladies have it nice and get one inside. read more

Fiancé got a cheeseburger, which was a touch too salty with hints of other grilled items (like onions). He described it as a step above fast food burgers, but not nearly as good as a sit down pub restaurant burger and definitely nowhere near Swensons. There was no malt taste to the chocolate malt- as other reviewers mentioned, it was much more on par with a Wendy's frosty. Drink sizes are small- our medium pop was the size of a typical child's drink anywhere else. I ordered a slide of peach pie and was given pecan. The cheese sandwich consisted of unheated pieces of American put onto a bun. We can now say we have checked Kewpees off our list. read more

Back to Kewpie's! I headed here as soon as I pulled into Lima, town of my birth, even before I found a motel. It's been four years so I was looking forward to it. I'm not sure if this is a great section of town to be in at night, but I wasn't going to let that stop me from enjoying the experience! I ordered the usual, Cheeseburger, fries and a chocolate malt, but alas, they were out of my favorite, the sugar cream pie. :'( The food was as I expected except the malt didn't have a very pronounced malt flavor. I substituted mincemeat pie for dessert and it was very good for a fast food restaurant. I'm always amazed at how good the pie crusts are in the Midwest, wherever I go. The experience was... interesting. Having not been familiar with Lima, I can't tell whether the city itself is in a dis repairable state, or if this was a rough side of town. That, is however another story for another time. There were some vagrants hanging inside, and outside. The clientale reminded me of somewhere in deep Appalachia, and the workers were less enthused to see us there. Perhaps it was a warning of sorts.... a kind of "What are you doing here? In this town? Do you value your reputation?" Just an overall rough feel to an economically hard hit Ohio community. The place was a time capsule which I enjoyed. And there's Kewpees adorning every corner of the restaurant to keep a watchful eye over patrons, burning their delicious smirk into the depths of your soul. Lima has 3 locations for Kewpees and I'm a little jealous of the kitsch of it all. The burgers themselves are... ok. They are made to order.. in a smash type style. I came here anticipating a smaller type burger close to Crabills (See Urbana), or Hickeys (See Portsmouth), but these were a standard sized burger. A double was plenty, and almost too much. I also was anticipating a specific special type of burger for Kewpee, but there was no signature toppings combo and believe me, I asked. Drink sizing is reminiscent of old days-- Smalls are definitely... small. Chocolate malts here are essentially on par to a thick Wendy's frosty... best eaten with a spoon and not so much with a straw. The experience was... OK. It didn't exceed my expectations by any means, but it's a weird burger pilgrimage I think everyone in Ohio has to make at some point in their life. read more

Been working 3rd shift for nearly 20 years. Besides spending $20 at arbys and still not satisfying my hunger kewpee is about the only restaurant open and serving lunch during breakfast hours. Love being a valued customer instead of being treated like trash for visiting their astablishment the way the big franchise employees do. read more

My wife and I stopped here and had lunch. It was the Kewpee doll theme that got us. The place is downtown and has very limited parking available. We found a parking spot and went in. It seems that most of their business is drive thru or carry out. Since we were not locals we also saw that everybody but us had "coupons" for discounted meals. It was what we expected. Sure it wasn't the Waldorf but it was clean and gave the appearance that it has been in operation for quite some time, as is the reality. I would think that it is a downtown Lima institution. Food and prices were good. Overall we had a good time there. The place is sort of small but there is always lots of turn over, and as I said before, most of the business is drive thru or carry out. The $64,000 question would we go back? Absolutley. It's a nice homey place to relax and get a burger. read more
