The menu!

Imagine if McDonald's had never become the chain restaurant heavyweight of the world. Instead it happily spent decades as a family-owned operation in an obscure Ohio town, where one family member decorates the restaurant to the hilt in Coca-Cola memorabilia and another maniacally cleans the tables after every customer. You might just have what is present-day The Willow, a great alternative to typical fast-food fare that's every bit as greasy. I stumbled upon this gem while traversing the World's Longest Yard Sale with my two best friends. So we were already on top of the world when we stepped in to this amazing time capsule of Americana. I ordered the Big Fritz (because what the heck even is that?) and we all split a huge order of chili cheese fries. Somehow a delicious serving of cole slaw ended up in the middle of the table. I single handedly took down the coleslaw and I don't even like coleslaw. The burger was good: double decker with quite a few fixins. Really nothing too special... Because the chili cheese fries stole the show. I began a relentless downward spiral of a mouthful of chili cheese fries followed by a mouthful of coleslaw that did not let up until there was no more to be had. Overall a very charming, delicious alternative to chain fast food restaurants with a similar pricing structure. Next time I'm going after the pies. And a double serving of that coleslaw.

My boss and I stopped here for lunch on the way back from a business meeting. It was a place I had driven past many times and was always curious about. He is always up to trying new things, so we decided to see what it was all about. It is a pretty small place, but overall it was clean and well maintained. It is setup like a fast food chain, which we learned quickly, that that is exactly what it is! It is a "Mom n' Pop" fast food joint that never franchised. The menu is mostly burgers and fries with some chicken, fish, and fried fair. Our food came out quick and hot. It was pretty much fast food quality as one would expect. It was good, be not that fantastic new place that blew my mind. We left full and with plenty of extra cash in our pockets. I would certainly stop there again for a quick bite while passing through town, but it isn't a destination joint like some local dives. It beats the fast food chains on the east side of town, but not sure that's saying much.

I love their hand cut fries. They're even better with some vinegar sprinkled on top! And the customer service is always great.

Super small hamburger patties on a fresh bun with toppings. Very slow but friendly service. That's pretty much it.

I love their food is really great the people are so sweet and kind I would like to go there…read moresometime soon

You walk in to see a counter with seating for four people, high back, swivel chairs. There's a…read morediner menu letter board up on the wall, yellow with age, announcing the flavors of milkshakes and ice cream. It's from the 60s and probably hasn't changed since they put it up 65 years ago. There's a whiteboard on the back wall with the special for the day written out. Bacon egg and cheese omelette or a sausage egg and cheese sandwich on toast. Five dollars. The kind of place with a few locals sitting at a booth having their morning coffee, one of the waitresses offering Jim the last donut because they know he will want it. He accepts it. This is, in my mind, a classic American small town diner. The kind of place I grew up, eating in my hometown of 500 people. It's not high cuisine, there's nothing fancy about the food although I did come across a few things I had never seen before on the menu. Fried mush. Meat grits specials, like the scuttle butt and the chili Bob. An age old, but perfected recipe of eggs, meat, cheese, and a starch either potatoes ( homefries) or toast. The coffee is weak and not much flavor to it but, to be honest, it's exactly what you would expect in a place like this and there's something comforting about that. Honest, simple food made day and a day out, catering to the local crowd and a few roadway, travelers like myself who happen to come across it. There's a certain charm and depth to places like this that have been lived in day and day out by the same people for decades. For those like up rounded, there's the nostalgia and connection to the many other people having the same experience day after day in communities across the United States. Forgive me if I wax nostalgia can get a little sentimental here, but this morning's dining experience definitely elicited that for me. I hope you can find your own version of this sometime today or in the near future.
