Front desk person (Mira) was very rude both on the phone when scheduling and when checking in. We were running late and I called, she said as long as I got there within 10 minutes of the appointment time we'd be ok to continue. We got there 9 minutes after. She said we were too late. I showed her my iPhone time and pointed to their clock but she said she goes off of her monitor time which was 9:30. She went and asked the doctor (Dr Lei) who also said no. I called ahead and everything. We didn't plan to dilate which would save time but they still wouldn't see us. Incredibly rude, won't be going back. Came to another Rainbow optics location and the lady was incredibly friendly. read more

Let me start by saying the Dr was exceptional. I would love to have kept seeing him. However the front staff and billing experience has been as low level service as you get. Ive had better service at WALMART. They genuinely do not know what customer service is supposed to look like, or worse, they don't care. I had an eye emergency and was able to get in the same day. I was thrilled! I expected to have a copay which is fine. When I got there the front staff treated me like I was a bother to them and then they argued my insurance coverage with me. I paid in full knowing what my coverage is and expecting to get a refund promptly. (luckily I was in a position to do that but not everyone is). My second visit they were even more rude; asking me to sign a piece of paper saying I would pay in full for whatever they did that day. I asked for clarity on what it was they would be doing and they said they could not tell me, but still required me to sign the form. I spoke to the Dr and he apologized and acknowledge there have been too many complaints regarding the front office for it to be continuously ignored. Fast forward to me just getting my EOBs from my insurance stating they did in fact pay for the visit and I just had a copay, like I tried to tell them on day one. I called and the front office girl STILL argued with me that they were right and what I paid went towards the deductible. When I told her I had an EOB showing they had received payment from my insurance she put me on hold. She came back and said "it looks like they did pay and we will issue a refund. You should expect to see it in 2-3 months." Zero apology or accountability. 2-3 MONTHS???? I immediately asked for a manager. I will give him credit, the manager was nice and stated he understood my frustration. He agreed that I should be getting my refund much sooner and that they are now a corporate office and have zero control at the office level. He said it may not take that long but there was nothing he could do. Again this could have all been avoided if the front office had an ounce of customer service skills. When a patient says, "hey I don't think that's right" , maybe instead of getting defensive you actually pick up the phone and call the insurance to ask again instead of being lazy and defensive. read more

I have purchased my glasses from Rainbow for several years. I just lost my glasses and called expecting that since I was an established customer and had an immediate need that between all their locations they would be able to find someway to sell me new glasses in the next week or so (hopefully sooner!). I called Willakenzie location, explained my situation to the Assistant Manager, and was told that the soonest appt available would be in mid April -- almost 6 weeks! I was amazed, asked if they were sure, and asked frankly how they expect to stay in business if they have no solution for taking care of an established customer who has lost/destroyed glasses? They had no answer but to repeat that this was their policy. I mean, really?!? I shop there and pay premium prices because I like to support local businesses and because I expect to receive more responsive service from a local provider than say, one of the countless online glasses companies. How hard is it to offer to sell me a new pair of glasses with my existing and recent prescription?? Oh well, I guess I'll just have to go save myself a bunch of money buying online... though perhaps I'll end up trying someone else local, either way I see no reason at all to continue giving my money to Rainbow Optics. I actually signed up to Yelp to write this, hope it helps someone see their way to a better glasses shop! Edit: after havng a cup of tea to de-stress, I went to my vision insurance website and they had easy process to find online provider... link provider to my insurance and got glasses ordered with existing prescription before I finished cooking dinner... got the same pair I had previously at a very decently cheaper price!! read more

Almost everyone here is wonderful...almost. The lady that does the initial exam is absolutely horrible! I thought she was just having a bad day the first time I visited, but she was just as rude to me the second visit. Having said that, I am so impressed with Dr. Ehlen and the other team members that I'll keep coming back and I guess I'll just have to deal with the worlds grumpiest tech. Service was friendly and fast. Glasses are great and fit perfectly. I have been using them for 10 years and have never been disappointed.

Eye exam was thorough and was explained well. I picked out some cute glasses and they were ready in about a week. The front desk staff was friendly and efficient, the person helping me with lens choices for my glasses explained everything well and did not try to "up sell" features I didn't need or wanted. And there is plenty of parking. Combine that with being open on Saturdays and later daytime to accommodate my work schedule, definitely a positive experience read more

One star is for Dr. Le and the accurate prescription for my glasses. I gave my insurance information to the front desk and they said they would call to see what was covered. I held off on purchasing my glasses from them until they were able to find out whether they some of it would be covered. After being told that insurance would cover half the cost of my glasses I went back in and ordered them there, paying a hefty $400 for my half. A few weeks later I received a bill for $400 because my insurance did not cover any part of the glasses. I explained to billing that I was misinformed about insurance coverage to no avail. I would definitely urge you to go anywhere other than Rainbow Optics because their staff is either incompetent or deceptive. Either way you are burnt! read more

I was going to Sheldon location for at least 15 yrs and never had an issue. I liked the convenience and service. SOMETHING changed. I just saw a comment that they have new ownership.. That might explain it. I loved having Pam DeCalesta as my doc from approx. 2006-2012, but she retired. Everyone there since then was okay. I always asked for Pam's husband, Dr. D. Until 2023 when I had to get an exam and was given Dr. Gu (sp) because Dr. D was no longer going to help out at Sheldon, but I wanted the convenience of Sheldon. No personality whatsoever, etc. (ugh) Then months later, I had more issues, so I saw Dr. D on Willamette this time. Bottom line, although he was thorough, etc...he didn't follow up with me...I was supposed to get a write up in the mail about my exam. I had to wait, wait, wait, I called to ask again, nothing...never got his report. My issue got worse...finally told the woman at desk I need referral to see a specialist. I was SO disappointed with the way Dr. D handled my issue, like he forgot all about me, AND their office lost an important xray result I had 10 yrs prior and THEY forgot to give me another xray several years after. Like, didn't they read my file and issue with one eye? I could have been more diligent, but they are really to blame for not paying attention to my file better and never followed up properly with me! Visited their new store on south Willamette Street for my annual eye check about a month ago on a busy Friday afternoon (office on 13th Street by campus has moved to Willamette. St.). Eye check with Dr. D. and. His technician, Bobby with very little wait time and thorough and efficient eye check. Decided to get some dress type sunglasses with my latest prescription with help from Bobby. Selected a great light pair of progressive light adjusting lenses in a light series of tortoise shell frames. With their store discounts was a great deal. Glasses were ready in a week and I requested them delivered to Willakenzie Store. Gentlemen there who help fit the for me did an excellent job! Would highly recommend for eye care and glasses. Glasses look and work indoors and out. read more

We have been LONG TIME clients of Rainbow Optics. I understand Rainbow Optics now has new ownership and their customer service has basically disappeared!! I ordered new, expensive glasses the end of July and am STILL waiting for them and now we're into October! They are using a new lab for lenses and this lab has done nothing but proven to be incompetent and exceedingly slow. It was a month before I got my new glasses but I rejected them because one of the lenses noticeably stuck out from the frame. It looked AWFUL! I was told it would take two to three more weeks to get them back, but never heard back from Rainbow. Upon calling to check in week three, I was told the lab made the lens too thick again!!! With the initial issue, the manager promised to personally follow this to resolution and make an adjustment to the cost. He has done neither. Every time I call for an update, promises are made but not kept. I am so done with this company and strongly advise anyone considering them to look elsewhere for your glasses. The staff who answer the phones are also very unprofessional. I am soooo disappointed! Plus they are no longer open on Saturdays which really makes it really hard on people who work all week to get their eyeglasses needs met. This is no longer the Rainbow Optics we knew and loved! read more

Today, I was my first and last visit to Rainbow Optics on West 18th. While several employees were friendly and outgoing, I encountered one employee who was rude and in my opinion, biased. I went to the store prepared to purchase eyeglasses, but as a result of the incident I encountered, I left without any glasses. I definitely was appalled by the behavior. read more

Needed to get a last minute check up in since my insurance was expiring. Was able to book online which I love! Had an appointment the very next day which was awesome. The entire staff was delightful except one girl at the front desk who really needs to learn to relax. She wasn't rude? But doesn't seem to know how to multitask when working on the phone and talking to customers and her coworkers. When picking out glasses the sales people were super helpful and checked up on me every so often since I was being delightful. If I do end up getting new insurance that this place takes I will definitely come back! read more

Customer service front receptionist Amanda has NO BUSINESS working in customer service! I don't know if had skipped lunch or something happened that day, but she was short and very unpleasant. Her demeanor was quite unfriendly and unreceptive. I have been visiting Rainbow Optics for many years but after today's visit I will be looking somewhere else where I will feel more invited and welcomed. I stopped coming here after years as a customer (with excellent insurance, three new pairs every year) because of the unskilled and rude staff. I called today to ask what blue light company was used for the last pair of computer glasses I got there (information needed for my current optometrist). Jennifer, who answered the phone was short and snarky. Just a reminder of why I they lost my business in the first place. Eugene Eye Wear does a far better job and has a much better selection. They always adjust new glasses correctly the first time. Something that Rainbow Optics couldn't get right no matter how many times they tried. The people that work @ Rainbow Optics are very helpful. But I had a bad experience with one of the Docs that does the exams. I have physical reactions to my eyes being dilated. When I expressed my concerns and asked not to dilate them, I was told 'I will not exam you without dilating your eyes.' He gave me an ultimatum! He then gave me a few and a I mean a few moments to decide. Once I calmed down I did it. And I will NEVER do it again. I've been going to Rainbow for 20 years...maybe more. My son lost his glasses in the McKenzie when he flipped in the Rapids on a kayak. I called ahead, was told what the replacement cost would be and was told of discounts with the value frames if we're went that route. Sean helped us, ab's we had a value frame, but my son wanted the glasses he was used to because he is a new glasses wearer, and started they were comfortable. Sean worked with us, and was able to help us so we could pay for the glasses our son wanted to make him more comfortable. They had all components of his glasses and we were able to pick up his replacement pair prior to 24 hours after losing his previous pair! Five star customer service! They have been amazing! read more

I cannot find the listing for the Willamette St location, so I hope it is okay I am writing my review here. I am SO pleased with everything about Rainbow Optics on Willamette. Several years ago I had a really bad experience at another optometrist company. I have very light sensitive eyes, and sometimes need more time for my eyes to readjust after bright lights are shone directly into my face. The last optometrist got very impatient with that, and that may have led to the very inaccurate prescription they gave me. I was nervous going into Rainbow Optics, because of how badly it had gone a few years earlier. BUT WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Everyone, and I mean everyone, in that entire office was respectful, patient, and kind. My new glasses are PERFECT! The new sunglasses especially are startlingly different. I no longer am squinting in pain while outside with my old sunglasses, which were not dark enough. I see everything so much clearer, and nothing hurts anymore. I highly recommend this office, especially if you are elderly and just need a few more minutes because your eyes are older and weaker. THANK YOU RAINBOW OPTICS ON WILLAMETTE!! read more

Bent my sunglasses attachment for the THIRD time by rolling over my purse with my wheelchair. Gah! My husband was going into Rainbow Optics last night as they were locking up. Did they turn him away? No! He was invited in, sunglasses attachment fixed AND they gave him a new hard shell glasses case for me to keep my glasses in! All after they were closed! I've been in here a few times and the wait is always very long, including for when I was there to pick up new glasses. They often have only 1 tech working and they are very slow. I like my glasses okay and they were nice enough but I just don't think it's worth the wait overall. read more

It feels weird leaving a review for Rainbow Optics, but they seriously went above and beyond. When I picked up my prescription, I brought in a pair of my Ray-Ban sunglasses that had bent when I shoved them in a car visor and the heat destroyed them. Not only did they fix them in a matter of minutes, but also adjusted my current pair of sunglasses that I didn't even inquire about. No extra charges... they did it just because. I guess it was almost lunch time so the girl couldn't be bothered with helping me pick out a frame and then there was no one left to help. I've been to rainbow optics three times in the past decade. I stopped after the second time due to a incompetent staff that made a myriad of mistakes on both sets of glasses. (They actually lost them). I then went to Semler optical which unfortunately is now out of business. I thought I would give rainbow a third chance this time. Sure enough, after I received my lenses I hade to return them due to them being incredibly inaccurate. I've had many lenses and I know that it takes time to adjust, however these were FAR from accurate. I couldn't even walk with these on. I hade to return them for a refund, which was given, however there was no refund for the exam. An exam that produced the prescription that I had to return, an exam that was obviously incorrect but still had to pay for. Fifteen minutes and three different people on the phone, each of which didn't know why I was calling and I'm finally told to come in for a reexam. Told to wait when I arrive. DONE!! I asked for the refund and was promptly given it, no questions as to why, nor did they really seem to care that they just lost a customer for life. Zero customer retention. Sorry, but never again. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!! read more

They have great customer service and are extremely timely and helpful. When it came to picking out my frames, even other customers participated in the feedback process. The absolute worst experience! I made eight trips and still didn't get glasses I could see through, finally gave up after wasting several hundred dollars. The Office Mgr. waited on me and he had the flu...you guessed it, I got it, I missed a week's work. They made lenses that didn't fit the frames, they threw away my old ones without asking, the doctor was rude about it instead of apologetic, and lastly, I was stuck with lenses I couldn't see out of. I took them to other places and was told they didn't have much correction in the left lens, didn't have the prisms they should have (that I paid for) and what was there was reversed. One trip into WalMart Vision and I had no problem whatsoever! When I told them about the problems I had, no one apologized, no one called me back, no offer to make it right, nothing. Don't waste your time and money, you've been forewarned! read more

Rude treatment by both the assistant and the optometrist -- they were both brusque and unfriendly. Everything they did was perfunctory, with no conversation, no explanation, no warnings about effects -- none of the courtesies that one is used to in such visits. The optometrist casually mentioned that I had the beginnings of a problem with my eyes, leaving it to me to make inquiries and obviously taking sadistic pleasure in giving utterly non-committal answers. I couldn't figure out why they were -- let's be candid -- so bitchy with me, until I remembered that I had gotten the appointment after a last-minute cancellation during the last slot of the day. Apparently, they were miffed because my appointment was keeping them from ending their day sooner -- excuse me for existing! Then the woman who was helping me choose frames had no aesthetic savvy at all and was obviously just plugged in the job because they needed someone in that role. I wrote this review because I have been receiving a lot of shitty, unprofessional treatment lately in Eugene and am tired of it. read more

Had an eye exam with the specific request for an updated contact prescription. Was charged $135 for the exam, and was handed a "spectacle prescription." Can't get contacts from this; I was told that I'd need to have TWO more appointments before the contact prescription would be writtten (0ne #55, the other $45). Broke an earpiece on my glasses. Walked in, spoke to a personable, friendly young lady and explained my problem. She took my glasses to a back room. Came back shortly and said it would be a few minutes. Returned with my glasses with a new earpiece and my glasses cleaned. Tried them on and fit perfectly. Asked how much and she commented - no charge. How cool is that. 5 stars!! read more

Dr Richard Ehlan was great with my ten year old granddaughter!! Finding someone in Eugene who is good with young children has been an a difficult experience. She has a complicated eye history, to include eye surgery at 18 months. He and the assistant were very thorough and communicated with both of us about what they were doing, her condition and options. The young man who assisted us with glasses was very nice also. The one issue was that they didn't have many choices of glasses for children. She did find one that she liked that fit her face. We will definitely continue to see Dr. Ehlan! read more

I recently wrote a complaint to Rainbow Optics relating that I thought the service was not what I expected from them. Within a couple of hours I received a phone call from the manager. She was just excellent in taking care of my concern. I felt once again I was a valued patient of Rainbow Optics. I broke part of my frames and took my glasses to Rainbow Optics on Willakenzie. They replaced the part for free and completed the job in less than 10 minutes. I am not a regular customer but time constraints prevented me from driving to South Eugene to get the glasses repaired at my long term eye doctor's office. I went there and had a contact eye exam. I wasn't told that I had to have my prescription with me that they could get it from my other eye doctor. Well it ends up that my last eye doctor went out of business and took his files with him, therefor I didn't have my prescription. Well they were wonderful to me! They were working out how to get my prescrpition without charging me an extra 75 dollars! I was VERY happy they were doing this and VERY grateful. After I got my prescription I was able to then get the results from my eye exam. Rainbow Optics is a tad expensive but I think the atmosphere is great and the experance was humbeling. I was very touched that they worked around my needs and that everything worked out in the end! :) I will definitly go back next year. read more
