Adequate, not the greatest. We've had longstanding appointments canceled by the doctor, and the same doctor got the prescription wrong. I REALLY like this practice and all the staff here. Location is great, options are good, staff are phenomenal. Dr. Cates is the first optometrist to notice and correct an issue I had that other optometrists had overlooked. Frame choices are a little lacking - or at least the style I want. But I don't fault the business - it's likely insurance and luxotica's fault. My biggest complaint - fix your bike rack or install a new one, PLEASE! This is such a bike-friendly town and the only rack here has one leg that's pulling out of the asphalt and the other wants to follow suit. I don't often feel safe parking here and if it weren't for Dr. Cates' great care I'd find a different optometry center. read more

HORRIBLE experience -- HORRIBLE. The exam I received was excellent, however the process of getting glasses with the proper prescription was a nightmare. First pair of glasses came back - wrong prescription. Second pair, all messed up again. Third pair, the bifocal lenses were WAY off; not even close to what we agreed to. Also, a pair of prescription sunglasses was being made at the same time. First pair - WRONG. Second pair - WRONG. Third pair-WRONG! Then my regular glasses finally came in after 33 more days of waiting, yet the bifocal lenses were once again - NOT EVEN CLOSE to what was agreed. Then, the sunglasses came back for the third time - Incorrect bifocal placement - AGAIN! I finally told them to forget the bifocal lenses on the sunglasses & get them with distance ONLY. FINALLY, after a 2 more weeks, they were returned correct. However, problems with the regular glasses still remained. This had been going on since October 5th, 2024 ( 4 Months). I got tired of dealing with this place and threw the regular glasses away. BUT WAIT, THER'S MORE. During all this, I receive a billing statement with a "FINAL NOTICE" of Payment placed on it. This was the FIRST time I received ANY bill from them. It was for $10, and they threatened to me over to a collection agency. FIRST BILL I RECIEVED, and I was threatened with collection's actions! Are You Kidding Me? So, I took the notice to them, yet no one knew why the "Final Notice" was placed on the bill. However, they NEVER apologized and exhibited NO concern about it. NOW, about 3 weeks later, I received ANOTHER bill (same bill) with a "Second Notice" stating I still owe the $10 I had already paid. This business is Incredibly disorganized, callous, unconcerned, exhibits horrible business practices, completely flawed & unorganized accounting practices, & has a COMPLETE lack of attention to details. I HIGHLY recommend people go somewhere else to get glasses. I know I will. read more

Fantastic people, great service and a wonderful selection of frames. Dr. Cates takes good care of my eyes, the front office people go out of their way to answer questions and make things work, and, Ivan, the glasses technician guy, is simply a jewel, the cherry on top of an absolutely wonderful experience. Our family recently decided to switch providers due to declining service at our prior Dr.'s office. Where else to turn but Yelp and the internet, right? Based on the good reviews, I decided to give FVC a shot. Receptionist Charlene was super helpful and patient with my many questions when I first called to schedule the appointments. When we arrived the day of, they were on time and the office is clean. I also appreciate they have a parking lot, not having to battle street parking/meters in the area. The doctor was very patient with our daughter, she gets very anxious with doctors so we knew it was going to be a possibility of her not wanting to cooperate. I spent over a year prowling various eyeglass shops in town to find the perfect frames. Family Vision Center was the friendliest and most knowledgeable. The selection is good, mirrors well-placed alongside windows allow you to try on frames in natural lighting, and staff are happy to let you browse on your own when that's what you want. Ivan is very knowledgeable about different lens types (progressives, lined and unlined bifocals, contacts) - he has some certification above and beyond the requirements for his position, so he's able to make recommendations and tell you what to consider when choosing frames and lenses. He's also brilliant with feedback on how different frames look - he wasn't afraid to tell me a pair was too wide or dark for my face, and I always agreed with his assessments. Other places would give a vague "Hm, those look nice" no matter what I tried on, and one place actually sold me a pair that was too small for my prescription. When I finally found some frames I liked, I asked if he could switch out the temples (the sidebar pieces) for a different color - so, same frame style, but two different colors. To my surprise, he said no problem! (When I asked the same at another place, they swore it couldn't be done and were later astounded that FVC was able to make it happen.) Furthermore, Ivan is a delight. He's warm and personable, quick to a hearty, genuine laugh. Family Vision Center is not a participating provider with my insurance company, so I had to forfeit some of my insurance benefits in order to get the right pair of glasses, but am glad I did. I'll be back the next time I'm in the market for a pair of glasses! read more

I began working with Dr. Dunks several years ago, after disastrous experiences at the practice of Drs. Offener & Fleming--this included watching my senior citizen mother and several of her friends complain of poor care, poor followup, and negligent attention to diagnosis and prioritizing a course of care. (In one case this resulted in a senior citizen with wet macular degeneration not being told she had wet macular degeneration, instead being routed through surgeries. When she finally got fed up and went to a new practice, that opthamologist had the unfortunate task of telling her she had advanced macular degeneration that would have been impossible to miss, and that during the window when treatment could have been used to slow the progression to blindness, she simply wasn't told, nor treated for the condition that is today taking her eye sight.) All that is to preface that I arrived at Family Vision Center very wary, and with an unfortunate chip on my shoulder. I had profound dry eye, was spending $150 a month on ineffectual eye drops, and when I went to Drs. Offener & Fleming they did no real diagnosis and told me there was no treatment other than using warm, wet, compresses on my eyes. The moment I showed up at Family Vision Center, everything changed. One of the things I most appreciate about Family Vision Center: they are so effortlessly thorough, skilled and downright nice that they make it look easy. The office staff were incredibly helpful, and helped me confirm my insurance benefits and got me scheduled. My first visit with Dr. Dunks was a night and day experience. She did a thorough exam, and proper diagnosis and assessment of my chronic dry eye. In fact, she noted that if my eyes felt awful, it was no wonder because as soon as I blinked, my tears were evaporating! (This was information I had never been told by the previous opthamologist and how they could have missed this and dismissed my complaints about how awful my eyes felt, I will never understand. The good news is I never have to go back to Drs. Offener & Fleming since I've found Family Vision Center and Dr. Dunks!) She then outlined several care options, and offered to network to assist me connecting with a Portland opthamologist with a special machine that did a type of "massage" to the eyelids that reputedly helped. Because I am a big scaredy cat, I passed on that offer, and likewise declined ductal plugs (which I have heard work flawlessly, but I'm just too scared.) We settled on using Restasis eyedrops, which at the time had an expensive copay, but Dr. Dunks helped me find a coupon that could lower the copay. This treatment has proved effective. Since then I've been back multiple times, gone through a cycle updating my bifocals and getting new frames, and continue to be seen regularly to manage my dry eye (which is nearly eliminated with the Restasis drops). Dr. Dunks continues to help me connect with the coupon to keep the drops affordable. Also a funny: I like their person who helps folks choose frames, he is delightfully authentic. I had decade old frames that looked cool when I got them, but had gotten pretty beat up. When I asked his honest opinion, he gave it--I work in a professional environment, and needed that to make sure my appearance looks appropriate. He gently told me the frames were more than a little worn, and he was correct. I needed to make my son's annual eye appointment before the school year started, and our usual OD, Dr. Dunks was booked a bit farther out than we needed, so we made an appointment with their newest OD, Dr. Lemas. He was outstanding! I already love this place anyway, and he fits right in with the upbeat, cheerful crew. He was very thorough with my son, explaining everything as he was doing it, and then walking him through the various options to correct his Myopia. My son ended up choosing daily contacts instead of glasses (he didn't want to start 6th grade with glass AND braces at the same time). We then met with their contact lens specialist, Tiffany, who has kids, and has a Saint's patience. :) The newer friend desk staff (2 retired recently) are sweet as can be, and my entire family always enjoys going here. Dr. Dunks was recommended to us by a parent at my son's school when my son started having trouble seeing the board. My son has some behavioral and emotional struggles that can make doctors' appointments difficult. All I can say is Wow. Dr. Dunks took her time with the exam but was very efficient. She directed her questions to my son and not me (unless the situation warranted it). She took her time to listen and also to answer his endless stream of questions about things in the room, how his eye worked, etc. She was so patient and did a great job explaining everything to him. She answered him in a way he could understand but didn't treat him like a baby. The gentleman who helped my son pick out his frames (I'm terrible with names) was lovely. He was helpful when we needed it but also let us take our time to just look and try glasses on. He was not pushy with any pair of frames but answered any questions we had. This was my son's first visit to the optometrist and it was just wonderful. Everyone was friendly, helpful, informative, but in no way pushy. Cannot recommend enough. read more

I called to ask if they could check my daughters file to see if were eligible for frames, and was asked if my plan renews every January, I said yes, and her reply; "well, there is your answer isn't it?!" The Dr gave me two free trial pairs of contacts which made me unbelievably happy! I've been in glasses my whole life. This place is as good as it gets. Dr. Cates and Perkins are great. Appointments always start on time or very-nearly on time (you aren't stuck waiting there for 30 minutes). The staff has always been friendly and responsive. I think I've gotten 4 or 5 pairs of glasses from this place.
