All I'm going to say is; if you're in a Bloomington, and you love old school, hippie vibes, then Rainbow Bakery is the place for you. Rainbow Bakery is an all vegan restaurant. It is not a chain, so you'll have to go to Bloomington. Even though it's far, you will NOT regret it. Rainbow Bakery serves donuts, cupcakes, scones, and many more scrumptious delights. Compared to Rainbow Bakery, store-bought foods are NOTHING. Rainbow Bakery has a vegan batter, which doesn't make your ordinary cupcake. It makes something even better. This is an amazing vegan-friendly bakery with absolutely gorgeous goods. Everything is delicious, and all the flavors are unique. The prices are great. Yum! This is a super cute little vegan bakery/coffee shop that my husband and I checked out after a night of music playing and debauchery. First of all, the shop is adorable. It's all comfy diner furniture, quiet music, plants, and retro vibe. Very hangover-friendly. Second, I know a lot of people are down on vegan food. You guys should give this a try - just once. I had the breakfast pastry (a spiced tofu scramble in a dough shell) and it was AMAZING. Just what the doctor ordered. My husband, the proud carnivore, had a cinnamon roll that was equally delicious. It's a neat place and if I were judging everything aside from the baked goods I would give 10/10. It looks like Urban Outfitters created their own cafe, which I would describe as a "cool hipster vibe". The customers seem to "dig it". The baked goods however, leave something to be desired. The cinnamon rolls are pretty good but the other baked stuff i tried was not as awesome. It must be the vegan process, as I would describe some of the donuts as "empty tasting" but could not tell you why. read more

I must admit: I was a prior skeptic of an all-vegan bakery, being a devoted meat/animal product consumer. However, Rainbow blew me away in all aspects. Let's start worth the atmosphere: it's very hipster, colorful, and comfortable. There's several tables, a bar along the window, and so many fun decorations adorning the walls. The service was also impressive. The lady at the counter was kind and helpful. She also gave us some ideas for things to see/do while in Bloomington. My boyfriend and I shared 4 different types of donuts while there. As a huge lover of donuts, I anxiously held my breath as I tasted each kind. The verdict: delicious cinnamon sugar and apple cider donuts and so-so strawberry frosted and chocolate frosted. The texture was a little different than a regular donut, but I would describe it as lighter with less weight. Still very yummy. Vegans and meat eaters alike will enjoy this quirky, fun bakery. read more

Located just steps from the B-Line, this space has the quintessential friendly hipster-y vibe that seems to permeate Bloomington's culture. It was snowing the morning we came and the kids played out in the snow while we watched from the window, sipping a cup of delicious strawberry watermelon coffee, and eating an out of this world blueberry chocolate muffin. I love love love Rainbow Bakery! I'm not vegan, and I have to admit when I think of vegan food I'm mostly not interested at all because I haven't really had a lot of vegan foods that I can say tasted amazing. But Rainbow Bakery is the exception! Their donuts, cupcakes and muffins are super yummy. They shine for their donuts and rightfully so. There are so many choices from more traditional flavors like chocolate to more adventurous flavors like lavender. Everything is pastel, rainbow colored with kitchsy items all around. Their sugar and creamer sits on an old stove with old diner tables for sitting. It's a little shop of happiness! Come early because every time I've showed up with an hour left there are very few things left to buy, and donuts are usually gone. Although their sweet treats are amazing, I wasn't a fan of their savory items. Anything with bacon or their pasties (I believe that is what they are called) just aren't my cup of tea. As a celiac - Rainbow has the best gluten free muffins I've ever had. I recently moved here from Milwaukee and been to several vegan/gluten free bakeries, and while Rainbow isn't the best - they have the best muffins and their other gf options are fantastic. Having this gf option in Bloomington gives it 5 stars. I wish they served specialty coffee drinks, or made gf bagels. read more

My favorite about this place is the decor and treats are true to its name. A colorful rainbow of colors on the walls and in its furnishings just add to the colorful cupcakes and other treats in the glass case. I was shockingly surprised at how immediate my treats were ready. Cupcake from the display and iced tea from their mini fridge. Faster than Jimmy John's! This is a great choice to meet a friend for coffee and a little yummy delicacy and even better of a choice if you have a friend who follow a gluten free diet. Although the frosting was a bit sweet for my sweet tooth, my chocolate raspberry cupcake was delicious and the raspberry jam was a perfect touch. I decided to check this place out while on vacation because it looked super cute, but I ended up throwing my food away half eaten and leaving sick. The idea of an all vegan place is cool, but not letting customers in on the secret is not a good idea. I ordered the cheese, Apple, and Rosemary scone and a cupcake, not knowing that it was all vegan (and made with soy and nut products). I am soy and nut intolerant, and I spent the rest of the day sick. Seriously guys, vegan is awesome but you HAVE TO make the allergens in your food obvious on your menu. read more

I was in town visiting some friends, and I was craving something sweet. Rainbow was in walking distance so I decided to give it a try. I also liked the fact that they are a vegan bakery. I ordered a rosemary donut with a chocolate glaze, and I also ordered a poppyseed donut with a grapefruit glaze. The young lady who help me was very nice. Both donuts were outstanding! Rainbow also offered other varieties of donuts, cookies that looked mouth-watering, and some kind of pasties that looked pretty tasty. I plan on stopping by tomorrow on my way out of town to pick up a dozen to take home. I suggest you go check it out. Also I should add that the donuts are around $3 each more or less. Don't expect to pay 80 cents a donut like you would at a Meijer or Piggly Wiggly. read more

I used to love Rainbow Bakery and went at least once a week for some of their delicious treats (the mallow-chip cookie was always my favorite). However, things seem to have changed. The pasties have shrunk to about 2/3 their previous size but have remained $6-$7. The prices have gone up. The mallow-chip cookie has a lot less flavor and a lot worse texture. Overall, I'm very disappointed with the changes. In my most recent visit, I went for the Gallery Walk exhibition earlier this month. I was shocked to find that they had set out snacks containing dairy. The previous owners never would have let this happen, as the bakery was started as a cruelty-free, vegan business. I really don't feel comfortable going when there is a possibility there might be animal products in what they are serving. I understand this may not be a big deal to some people, but it's a deal breaker for me. read more

We made a special drive from 2 hours away to see what all of the fuss was about. The offerings were undeniably delicious, but the service was underwhelming, which was unexpected for as many great reviews as we read. (Perhaps our server was just having an off day?) It was nice to be able to order freely without worrying if the offering was vegan friendly, though! Hopefully it will be a bit of a brighter visit the next time we are out in the Bloomington area, as I wouldn't drive out specifically for this destination again. read more

In addition to the great offerings at their store location, they offer amazing catering. Instead of a cake, we wanted donuts at our wedding, and Rainbow really came through. We didn't know what kind of donuts we wanted, so we just said, "make us your favorite." They even made us some gluten-free donuts for our few gluten-intolerant friends and family. This is a great little vegan bakery and cafe! Over the course of a long weekend we had marshmallow chocolate chip cookies, ginger snap cookies, peanut butter cookies, cold brew coffee, cinnamon rolls, and a breakfast pastry consisting of scrambled tofu, spinach, potato, and vegan cheese. Like an oasis in a dessert of fast food - this nondescript and slightly out-of-the-way bakery has a small but perfect selection of extraordinary treats. Eating well while traveling through the Midwest is not always easy for the paleo, vegan, or gluten-free but this amazing gem has just what you need: excellent, rich, perfectly roasted coffee and delicious perfectly-made gluten-free vegan baked goods.
