After following maze of stairs and hallways, I eventually found the Brightside Café gluten-free bakery. I'd loved it. I was staying at a hotel across the street and won the lottery this morning to find this place. I got the biscuit sandwich and a coffee and both were fantastic. The prices were reasonable, and the service was excellent. I wish there were more places like this The other inside was nice and clean. For celiac like me, this is a great find I will be back

Decided to try this place on a Sunday afternoon. We heard that the menu is completely gluten-free which, to our delight, it was. My wife can't have gluten so it was worth the hour drive we made to try it. The place is located on the bottom floor of the fountain square building in downtown Bloomington. On the weekends, the street parking is free which makes it nice. The cafe looks like a typical cafe with plenty of seating. There's some overflow seating outside of the cafe as well. You order at the counter, then they bring it to you. The staff was very friendly and very helpful. We decided to try several things and split it all. We tried a cinnamon roll, half order of biscuits and gravy and a sausage, egg and cheese biscuit. We also tried a peanut butter bar for dessert. Everything was unbelievably amazing! We couldn't even tell anything was gluten-free. We will definitely be back and are already planning our next trip down there.

    Great packaging for ToGo orders!

I can't say enough positive things about this cafe! We worked with them to provide fare for a midafternoon party for 100 guests prior to the IU Jacobs School of Music Commencement Recognition Ceremony. We have been so impressed with the food quality and taste in their "certified gluten free" establishment that we wanted to utilize their culinary skills for this event. The menu suggestions they made were awesome, the execution of our ideas were equally as good. We had a great assortment of quiche bites and delicious sweet treats as well. Our guests were thrilled with everything that Brightside created for the party. Thank you for working with us Abe & John & Staff.

I am easily impressed with food and I've said this a lot... but this may be the best sandwich I have ever had. The bread is what really puts it over the top. They make their bread fresh in house and you can tell!!! The decorations are also cute and welcoming. The only downside is that I went back the next day to order the same thing for lunch, but they don't sell their lunch menu on weekends apparently? I would go back without a doubt though!!

Wow! Brightside Cafe is a delightful find! We discovered it thanks to Bloomington Foodies. On the lower level of the Fountain Square Building is this tiny unassuming cafe with bright glass windows, coffee and tea, friendly service, and a small but delicious menu of options. They have a wide variety of drinks (teas, coffee, espresso, bottled water, and juices), and baked goods: brownies, muffins (2 vegan), cookies, and 3 breakfast items. We ordered coffee (very good) and an Americano (delicious!), but the best part were the baked goods. The real star of the show is their flaky, buttery biscuits, which are phenomenal: flaky, moist, tender, and buttery! You can get as an egg, cheese, and sausage sandwich or as B's & G's. We got it sans sausage with egg and cheddar cheese. They also have quiche which looks very good. We also tried their vegan frosted chocolate muffin. Wow. It's so good! Moist, tender, delicious frosting. Not too sweet. Just right. Wonderful with their espresso! I highly recommend this cafe for a delicious breakfast! It seems like they're just getting started and may have other options down the road. But, whether you're gluten-free or not, Brightside Cafe is a real find!

The best gluten free food I've ever had- hands down. I have celiac disease and haven't had a cinnamon roll in years, and even my friend who can eat gluten said it was one of the best she's ever had!! So soft and an impressive size (especially for being gluten free) and the cream cheese frosting was perfect. My friend got the pumpkin cream cheese muffin and it was so bouncy and light and had delicious pockets of cream cheese and a nice pumpkin flavor. We also got the s'mores latte (which they drew little ghost faces onto the marshmallow fluff- adorable!!) and caramel apple butter latte and they were delicious!! Not too sweet but still has strong balanced flavors. Will definitely be coming back here and I have already recommended it to my fellow gluten free friends! The location is a bit hard to find at first but I actually enjoyed sitting in the Fountain Square building.

Brightside Cafe was a fun spot we found while visiting Bloomington. I got the Strawberry Champagne Iced Tea, Peanut Butter Bars and Lemon Blueberry Muffin. I loved the Lemon Blueberry Muffin bar and iced tea. The Peanut Butter Bar wasn't my favorite to eat a lot of but my boyfriend loved it. I thought the prices were good for a gluten free bakery and there was a ton of street parking around this mall. I would come back and get breakfast/lunch here. They had a lot of sandwiches and gluten free biscuits and gravy!

I was offered coffee while I waited for my food because there was a minor wait! Customer service is amazing. I highly recommend this restaurant. The B&g is not only amazing in taste but well worth the small amount they charge for it.

Really liked it. I believe it's mostly, if not all, vegan. I know they were experimenting with some…read moreitems with dairy a while ago but I did not notice any non-vegan items while I was there, so not sure if that's still a thing. Anyway, it is a little out of the way. It's walkable from downtown but not really in the downtown core. Pretty quiet when I was there, but the atmosphere felt approachable. Some of the chairs were like school desk chairs (adult-sized, of course) that I haven't seen since I was in primary school which was kind of funny. The guy at the counter was cheerful and friendly. They looked like they had run out of some of the hot savory items by Saturday mid-afternoon, but there was still a wide variety of sweets. I believe the current owners are Indian, and you see some of those flavours featured. I got: Samosa handpie: Good, not mind-blowing, but good. Nice flavours. If you like a flaky crust, this is not it, but I liked the rustic pastry crust. Pistachio cardamom donut: Loved it. Before I moved to Bloomington, there were a few bakeries that offered vegan-GF cake donuts that I loved, and this was the first thing I've gotten here that reminded me of that. Pleasant texture and strong cardamom flavour, not too sweet. I think these are baked donuts, so they're a little different from regular fried donuts, but in a good way IMO. Rose dream latte: Milk with rose syrup topped with coconut whip and nuts, no espresso. Tasted great, but more of a dessert drink than I was expecting. The coconut whip was quite thick. The concept could probably use some refinement, because the whip was too thick and rigid to drink without a straw, but the nut pieces were too big to go through a straw, and so I couldn't figure out the best way to drink it. From what I understand, there are some longtime fans of this place who feel like the quality has dropped since the most recent change in ownership, but as someone who had never been here before, I really had a good experience. I get why people would be upset when something changes, but if you are considering trying this place for the first time, I wouldn't be too put off by the negativity around the change in ownership. There's no other place specialized in vegan baking in Bloomington, so I think it's good to support what they are continuing to do here, and even though I am partial to vegan food I wouldn't say that if it wasn't also GOOD. They also had some refreshingly unique options for baked goods.

The owners, a Sikh family, gave us their cardamom donut for free. The samosa hand pies were out. I would rate it 4/5. The decor was nice, and the owners were friendly. We were told that the staff is limited, and the owners themselves are thinking of selling this location and hoping to restart it in Greenwood, where they currently live and actually drive down to Bloomington every day. The matcha latte was fine. Everything was fine but not great. The vegan chocolate chip cookie was good, but could've used more chocolate chips.

One of the most revered items they make is the Special K Chewie, a glorious concoction of cereal, peanut butter, and Karo syrup. Ask any IU alum and chances are that he or she will rave about them. Sweet, chewy, crunchy - these no-cook cookies are fantastic. It's hard to believe that such deliciousness can be had for just $1.09! I know they make other cookies, but this is the one for me. When I mentioned that I now lived out of state, the staff told me that they can ship them to me. What?!? I really shouldn't know this, it could be dangerous. If you have reason to be on the IU campus as a guest, student, or traveler, make sure you stop by Sugar & Spice for a quick breakfast or afternoon snack. The cookies and muffins and cinnamon roll just seem to melt in your mouth (I'm sure lots of butter is involved). They even have a very good vegan coffee cake! The drinks are not great and consistency is not the name of the game. Maybe the coffee is better than the tea, but the chai tastes more of sugar and cinnamon than tea, and the matcha was very murky, but maybe that's because I got the strawberry matcha and that affected the colour. It didn't taste bad but just didn't taste like quality matcha. They have decent teabags, but the brand and selection varies and is not what's listed on the menu board. They can do a tea latte but don't always have teas that work well with milk. I like the iced tea they make during the summer better than the hot tea. They sometimes have bubble tea, which is made with a machine and is decent (as far as artificially flavoured tea goes) but very sweet. It's a complete gamble as to whether or not the bubble tea machine will actually be on at any given time. I tried to get it in the evening once but was told they usually power it down around 6, so came back around 4:30 next time, but it was off again. I finally did manage to get bubble tea a few times around lunch time and in the morning, but there have also been days where they don't turn it on at all despite displaying the posters for it. Tapioca pearls are on the menu but they seemingly never have them, only the popping pearls. The baristas are students and are sometimes friendly, sometimes not. I would guess there's a combination of high turnover and poor training because some of them just seem very confused. They usually do okay at keeping the line moving though. I come for the baked goods, and just get a drink while I'm at it because I don't want to wait in another line at Starbucks even though I actually think Starbucks makes slightly better drinks.
