The cake donuts are one of a kind, packed with spices and flavors. I never liked cake donuts until I tried them here. They aren't overly sweet like most you find in the stores. Oh, and the cupcakes are baked to perfection, perfectly unctuous! If you're looking for something more savory, the Michigan pasties are wonderful! The "chicken" leek and pizza are my favorites. If you're staying to eat, they'll warm them up for you as well. Rainbow Bakery is on my list of places to visit next time I'm in Bloomington. read more

Alongside classic bakery favorites like chocolate cupcakes and iced cookies (in adorable shapes), stand often-rotating, always interesting newcomers like lavender iced cookies, beet donuts, and more.I particularly enjoy going there to work in the quiet, cheerful atmosphere while drinking way too much coffee (they have their own blend!). And if you have weird food demands, Rainbow can certainly handle it. Vegan AND gluten-free? Hits most of the major allergies! Way to go, Rainbow! This is my go-to sit and work spot when I'm not craving a specialty coffee. As has been mentioned, they only have house blend drip, but I find the roasting to be better than your average Starbucks cup. I find this place to be infinitely more hipster than other hipster establishments (i.e., my beloved Hopscotch and Soma), but also much less crowded, perhaps due to its location two blocks off the B-Line and across downtown from the main stretch of Kirkwood. Great spot to kick back for an afternoon with a mug of coffee, a stack of reading/writing/grading, and a sweet (but not overly sweet) treat. read more

$2.50 for one of the most tasteless blueberry muffins I have ever eaten. I can only assume it must have been gluten-free due to the texture. The place seems clean enough, although there were several fruit flies buzzing along merrily in the display case. I'll give this place another try later on to see if my impression changes. read more

I love Rainbow Bakery! I go there every weekend for donuts and coffee, and sometimes during the week when I need a treat. I'll occasionally bring back cookies to my non-vegan coworkers, who all rave about how delicious they are. My current favorites are the hobnob cookies, the Cherry Pistachio Muffins, and the sugar cookies which always have the most adorable and/or beautiful decorations. The creativity the baker brings to her work everyday is really astounding--there is almost always something new to try. Didn't realize this while looking on yelp, but EVERYTHING here is vegan! Don't get me wrong, the donuts are really really good... But don't even bother with them.. you HAVE to get the breakfast pastie. It's to die for! So much flavor in the tofu scramble, the pastry is flaky and delicious and it comes with the most delicious flavorful gravy. I've had all kinds of vegan food from a lot of different states and this breakfast pastie is my favorite thing I've ever eaten. Going back tomorrow for another. This is by far my favorite bakery in Indiana. Being in Indiana and being vegan makes it not always the easiet thing to satisfy your sweet tooth. This place has everything. From donuts, cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, and other random goods, I just want to buy one of everything every time I walk in. I go here at least once a week and would recommend it to anyone. read more

Rainbow Bakery is the hipster hangout in Prospect Hill. I love it! They're completely vegan and have a separate area for vegan, gf treats. I'm very happy that my Celiac friends can enjoy this great location. They have good music and participate in artsy things like the first Friday gallery walk. They're charitable (they seem to always have a big box set up where you can drop off things to give to the homeless). If you're not super into sweets they have savory pasties which you're sure to enjoy. Their coffee is simple but very nice (iced or hot). No lattes. Would be cool if they had them but what can you do. They seem to treat their employees well since I'm pretty sure I've seen the same ones for years. Their hours are a little limited (you'll never be able to hit them up before work unless you have the special joy of not having to get to work by 8am). I've seen many a grad student and teleworker there and they seem to treat them well without trying to rush them out the door. They have delicious homemade granola with almond milk that I highly recommend. I'd love to see a more well rounded aspect to this Bakery - more savory things and baked bread loaves. But I'm happy Rainbow is here and will keep visiting from time to time! Oh yea - they also have a pacman machine, so be sure to bring some quarters! read more

Probably the most welcoming and adorable business in Bloomington, IN. It also happens to be completely vegan, so I don't have to even think about what to order other than what looks the most delicious. Everything I've ever eaten from their bakery case has been scrumptious. I think I've sampled most of their fare and I can not recommend the apple-rosemary scones or the breakfast pasties more. All the donut flavors are fantastic, including the ones that might seem a little strange (coconut curry, maple bacon). If you find yourself in Bloomington and are looking for a nice place to sit, sip, chat, and nom, then you should definitely go to Rainbow. read more

Let me preface this review by writing that I am a vegan and was absolutely thrilled to find that this was near my hotel while visiting Bloomington this weekend. I dragged my sleep-deprived boyfriend there, walking in the cold, because I couldn't miss the opportunity. The location is awesome, the building is SO cute, logo is fantastic, interior and decor was charming and colorful, and the staff was super fantastic and welcoming. I felt like I had found my "third place" while we picked out our treats and were sitting down. This is where my heart gets heavy. It is very important to me to have businesses like these that also attract non-vegans. Spreading the word about kindness, eating locally, and supporting small businesses is something I feel very strongly about. Everything is the case is attractive and you can tell that there was love put into the products. The flavor combinations are really fun, like coconut curry doughnuts and cheezy rosemary apple scones. The idea of all of these items was great but unfortunately I must have come on an ill-fated baking day. The doughnuts were all very dense, but also had too much leavener which gave a salty/soapy taste to them. Not sure what happened there. The Cranberry Orange Walnut Muffin was good, still dense, but did not have too much baking powder and/or baking soda. The scone was more of a flatbread that did have a tender, biscuit-like crumb and nice pieces of juicy apple, but also very salty spots (and I LOVE me some salt.) When I ordered the scone I was hoping for something thicker and more tender. I tasted the Pistachio Cardamom, Coconut Curry, and Maple Bacon doughnuts and all of them suffered from the same issue. Glazes and toppings were great, but I am thinking that for me, the doughnut recipe needs a little tweaking to use up all of that leavener (more apple cider vinegar or lemon juice) and maybe just less of it period. It could be that because there was so much initial lift from the extra leavening that they then collapsed and were more dense than usual. I wanted so much to love these treats, and I would come back to try some cupcakes and cookies if I am ever in town. But I don't think I would get the doughnuts again, which makes me sad because there aren't many places where I can order with abandon and eat with a clear conscience. At any rate, I wish everyone at Rainbow the best of luck, we need more places like yours. Thank you for what you are doing for the community, you sure got a lot of love here on Yelp! read more

This is an awesome vegan bakery, that also offers many gluten free options(egg free and dairy free as well). As a person who suffers from celiac, this has become my go to option whenever I get a craving for a donut, cupcake, or cookie. On a side note, I really appreciate what they stand for as I am vegetarian. Whether you are a carnivore or herbivore matters not though, and you should give this place a try if you are in the Bloomington area. You won't be disappointed, promise! We've been to Rainbow several times and are always happy with what we get. We recently placed an order for several cakes for our wedding and we're so happy with how it turned out. We knew we'd be using Rainbow, myself along with several guests are vegan, and their flavor options are overwhelming there's so many. Ordering was easy, we called and placed the order ahead of time. They made paying easy by sending us an invoice and they were ready when they said they would be. Our guests loved how cute they were and I think the unusual flavors caught people's attention. We wound up having more people share slices so everyone could try a little of each! And most were surprised to hear that they were vegan. I special-ordered a birthday cake from Rainbow and I could not be happier! After an initial email asking about available flavors I decided to call up and see if the flavor I was thinking about (jelly donut cake with vanilla butter cream frosting) was conducive to going on a little road trip for the party it was meant for. We ironed out a few details and I ordered it right over the phone for a super reasonable price. The cake itself was off-the-charts good! First off, it was decorated beautifully and looked better than I could have ever expected. The cake tasted incredible and people were impressed that we had something as unique as a jelly donut cake. I never told them the cake was vegan and they never would have know because it was one of the best cakes they'd ever had the pleasure of eating. I cannot recommend Rainbow Bakery highly enough. Forget the sugar grease bombs that pose as doughnuts. The Rainbow creates brilliant, delicious morning delights. The combination of flavors (often sweet and herby) with perfect crumb, and slightly crispy exterior could almost make you think this is health food in heaven. I ordered a simple two layer white cake with buttercream frosting, and explained that it did not need to be gluten free. I explained that it was for my adult daughter's birthday, who was a chef, and that she knew what good cake looked and tasted like. The cake was awful. It was heavy, undercooked and had an unusual and poor flavor to it. The frosting was grainy and not fluffy at all. The decorations on the cake looked unprofessional as well. And it cost $35.00 for an 8 inch two layer cake, which I was willing to pay for local and organic, but was way too pricey for the poor quality that I received. It was wrapped up in a brown bakery box with pretty ribbon and I should have opened it before buying it, but I trusted the baker to know what s/he was doing. So my daughter opened it as if it was a gift only to be rudely surprised. As was I. The whole cake was sad, sad on every level! Perhaps they do better with vegan and/or gluten free. But, they could not make a simple white cake with buttercream frosting. read more

My husband bought me a cake for my birthday from Rainbow Bakery. We brought the cake home and we gathered around the box in great anticipation since this we had never had 1. Vegan cakes 2. Anything that combined Rosemary and Chocolate and 3. Ordered a cake and had to wait a week to get it. I got to have the first bite since it was my birthday and the first thought that flew into my head was "Dear Lord". Since I am not a religious person I was slightly alarmed. I am not a person who eats cakes much since the caloric intake is rarely worth the price I will end up paying at the gym. I also don't seem to get overly excited about my birthdays anymore. In Short, if this cake was a religion, I would worship at it. I would spend the extra time on the treadmill gladly and I am very excited about my next birthday.
