Only ended up here because all the other breakfast spots in Bloomington packed on a Sunday morning. However, I am very glad I did end up here, as this place is a true gem. The concept of a vegan bakery is not one that would intrinsically excite me, I must confess, but Rainbow Bakery has turned me into a believer. Vegan baking can honestly be superior to the regular article. I had the pumpkin spice muffin. Wow, it was a revelation, with crystallized ginger, whole spices, and unbelievable moistness. Then I had another. My wife tried the blueberry corn muffin, which was also ridiculously tasty. We got some cinnamon rolls to take home. The kids ate them so fast there was little left. A charming, local bakery! I loved this bakery because of the delicious gluten free options! Day 1 I had the pumpkin ginger muffin, a sweet beet donut and a coffee. Day 2 I stopped in for a marshmallow chocolate chip cookie (tasted like a s'more!). Gluten free items are placed in a separate case to avoid cross contamination and I believe all items are vegan. Dedicated vegan bakery serving gluten free options as well located in Bloomington. After finally remembering to try Rainbow Bakery I was definitely happy I remembered. With multiple unique donut flavors and plenty of baked goods like cookies, muffins, and cupcakes... if you've got a sweet tooth you can treat that craving here. We tried the chocolate chip cookie and coconut donut, both of with were vegan of course and enjoyed them both. However, I've got to admit that I've had better vegan donuts before. Also, I'm not a huge fan on cake textures donuts and that is what I would say these donuts are like. The chocolate chip cookie was really tasted though! Loaded with chocolate chips and some salt on top! Lastly, the environment is very friendly with free wifi and an awesome looking coffee bar! I have to admit I really want one of the rainbow bakery coffee mugs because i think they are so cute! This place is super cute and ALL VEGAN! When I was searching to confirm that, there was little info. I'm guessing that would scare some people away- but it shouldn't!!! Lisa Dorazewski, the owner of Rainbow Bakery, is a genius. I've never had food as delicious as the ones in the Rainbow Bakery. Also, the inside décor shows that she possesses an eye for color and spatial design, which is also evident in her baking. It is evident that a lot of care and love goes into both the food and the maintenance of the bakery. My non-vegan friends are always blown away that vegan food could taste this good (they still labor under the misapprehension that vegans don't have good stuff to eat). Some have commented that the Rainbow Bakery's doughnuts and cookies taste better than the "real" thing. The glaze and frosting are made from natural ingredients without chemical additives, and the colors and designs are lovely. You should look at the Rainbow Bakery's instagram for some of the best food porn available to humankind. I would also like to note that some of the vegan food in town tends to be "heavy" and leaves me feeling unhealthy; however, the savories and sweets in the Rainbow Bakery, while very filling, don't give me that "heavy, gross" feeling at all. Last of all, the customer service is wonderful. The cashiers are always courteous and patient, and the bakery is always clean and beautifully kept. You do not have to be vegan or "hipster" to feel welcomed in this bakery -- they seem happy to accept everybody and from what I have seen, treat everybody equally well. read more

A vegan bakery? Yes, even being a vegetarian, I was skeptical. However, they truly blew me away. Every time I have been here, there is something new and amazing to try. The apple cider doughnuts were moist and delicious. The molasses spice cookies had just the right amount of kick. The blueberry muffins were packed with blueberries. And don't forget the pumpkin ginger muffins. The only thing I didn't love were the coconut curry doughnuts. They were just too dry for my liking. Right now they have Musgrave Orchard apple cider, but they also have tea and coffee. Gluten free options are in the top case. Another place that I simply "heart." This is my second visit to Rainbow Bakery. I think I love this place more after the second visit. Everything is vegan, but don't let that scare you away. I can almost guarantee that you will find an amazing treat. I adore the interior. They always have different art work on display. The decor is quirky and simple. The stove converted into a condiment station/planter is definitely a stand out. It's such a peaceful and relaxing place. No loud music is played. Now the highlight of any visit here is the multiple display cases packed with tasty treats. In the plastic case you will find a wide variety of gluten free options. In the larger glass case, you will find other goodies. Cookies and cream cupcakes, confetti donuts, "bacon" chocolate chip...yes "bacon" chocolate chip! Wowsa! I was blown away this cookie. Perfect combination of sweet and salty. It honestly tasted close to real bacon. My bf and I shared the first one, but I had to buy a second one just for myself. So good! Rainbow Bakery is awesome. The donut selection is always fantastic and offers a flavor for everyone (my favorite is the green tea). On Sunday's you can get your hands on the best cinnamon rolls in town, vegan or not. My wife has had them make my birthday cakes the last two years. Last year I had carrot cake and it was wonderful. This year I got the pamplemousse. I'll admit that the flavor seemed a bit off, but I think that's because I was expecting the cake itself to taste like grapefruit. While I was slightly disappointed by that, the quality and the AWESOME decorating made up for it. Seriously, they fit everything I wanted on a cake on a 6" cake. Their decorator is basically a magician! Their pizza pasties are delicious. My wife works within a block of Rainbow Bakery and I'm always excited when she surprises me with one of them. This place is amazing. First, I'm not vegan or vegetarian or gluten-free - I don't have any restrictions on what I eat - but I think it's great that there's a bakery that people with these restrictions can come in and eat anything (if you're vegan) or at least a nice selection of things (if you're GF). I believe strongly in the power of donuts, and it makes me sad to know that some people JUST CAN'T HAVE donuts. That said, everything I've eaten here (and I've been here many times) has been delicious - so if you're not used to vegan baked goods and you're not sure you would like it, I encourage you to give it a try anyway. Honestly I don't think they taste any different from "regular" baked goods, they *are* quite tasty, and I don't miss the animal-product at all. (But don't get me wrong, I still love me some cresent donuts). I usually get donuts (duh) and coffee. On any given day they'll have probably around 8-10 different kinds of donuts - the flavors vary quite a bit, offering both classics (like chocolate or cinnamon) and more exotic stuff (orange clove is one of my favorites). They also have several flavors of cupcakes, but I've never gotten one because they seem a bit expensive. IIRC, donuts are $1.50 (which I think is fair for a well-made donut), but cupcakes are $3.00. So eh, I dunno, maybe some day. They do look tempting, I just want to stretch my dollar. They also have these massive muffins for $3. I've had these a few times and they are very good and filling! One of the other things I really like about this place is the coffee, which is only $1.50. It's quite good, and refills are $0.75. So while I enjoy free refills as much as the next man, I don't think $0.75 is too much to ask for a mug of coffee. If you're staying that long that you need a refill you're obviously enjoying it anyway. The mugs are attractive, too. And oh yeah, they offer fast and reliable free wi-fi. Hmm my only qualm is I wish they were open later. They close at 7:00 (I think) most days. I understand it's a new business and maybe they want to test the market - or maybe they just want to go home - but I know there have been some nights when I really wish I could've stopped by. Finally, the people here are really friendly. Whoever's working the counter is always cheerful, and the clientele seem like a nice crowd too. I see lots of families come in, people studying, chatting, playing cards, whatever. It's just a great place to spend some time. I always look forward to a visit here (like later today!) read more

On multiple occasions, I've overheard patrons talking about how they didn't even know until they stopped in but now are hooked on donuts and muffins and cookies that just happen to be vegan. All the bakery-case items are vegan, all the time, and lots are gluten-free. And are _delicious_. There is soy and almond milk out for your coffee and tea (and single-serving creamers, too, the only non-vegan thing in the house). And the cakes are _gorgeous_. We had a cookie butter donut, a strawberry frosted donut, a chocolate frosted donut, a raspberry frosted donut, a berry muffin, and a vanilla rose donut!! The raspberry donut was my favorite! I was super excited when I learned that a new bakery was opening in this neighborhood, then super bummed when I learned it was going to be a vegan bakery with gluten-free leanings. I spent many months hoping that an old-world artisanal bakery would open up instead and I'd finally be able to buy fresh bread in my neighborhood, and perhaps meat pies fried in lard, but no dice. Reading the facebook page and these reviews just bummed me out more. Putting curry, chai, and green tea flavorings into pastries will not distract me from the fact that you are trying to take out everything that makes baked goods tasty, you vegan hipster scoundrels! Eventually I grumped my way over to Rainbow on a rainy Sunday morning, only to discover that they're closed all day on Sundays. So I double-grumped my way back on a weekend afternoon. Immediately upon arriving, I--no exaggeration--did a double take at the sight of a guy who looked exactly like Fred Armisen, from Portlandia. It wasn't him, but he would have been right at home among the walls covered in local art, retro furnishings (including a vintage stove repurposed to hold coffee accoutrements), and Pac-Man machine in the corner. I was surprised to discover that they don't have an espresso machine--it's just filter coffee. The coffee was pretty good and unburnt, even toward the end of a quiet afternoon, but it wasn't better than what I make at home. There is a little dish of prepackaged half-and-half containers in addition to the soy and almond milks, which is a nice concession, I guess. And the baked goods? Eh. I had a maple donut that was pretty OK--it was cakey and chewy, with a heavy slathering of sticky maple sugar. That plus a small coffee cost me $3.25, which seemed fine. So, yeah. If you like twee aesthetics and "fancy" cupcakes/donuts without eggs or butter or gluten but with lots of "creative" flavorings, you will probably adore Rainbow!
