Great place! Having been born and grown up in Berlin, Germany, I can tell you it tastes like home! The Paulaner Hefeweizen has always been my favorite beer, so I'm delighted to see it on tap there. The food is basically similar to what one would expect in a German Octoberfest, but with an American twist. We got Kasekrainer, which is a bratwurst with toppings on a roll; Bavarian, which is a hamburger loaded with toppings on a bun of your choice with a side salad; and a Haus Salad, which is dinner salad that is loaded with many ingredients. For drinks I had a draft beer, which was in a large stein like you would get in a German restaurant. My companion got a Mistletoe Margarita. Both were delicious! For dessert we got both Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel Bites and shared them. There was more than enough and we brought leftovers home. I have eaten my Haus salad three times! The atmosphere was so pretty. We were able to sit at a window, so we could see both inside and outside the restaurant. Inside is warm and friendly with plenty of colorful lights and a bar, if you just come in for a drink. There is plenty of outside seating with heaters and fire pits. All is so inviting. The service is good. The staff is very helpful, especially if it is your first time eating there. The chef even stopped by to make sure we were enjoying our food. You seat yourself and get your own water from a station set up for cold water and cups. You choose your own seats. Once seated, you scan the QR code in the table and it opens a menu for you to choose your food and drink from. Once you include your payment method, your food is sent to the kitchen for preparation. It didn't take long for a staff member to bring our drinks and food, and the place was crowded! They made sure we got what we expected. We could have added to our dinner if we had chosen, but the food was so plentiful and delicious, we didn't feel a need to do that. Once we had finished our meal and gotten takeout containers, we paid through the website and we were free to leave. It was nice not to have to wait for a check and someone to bring back a receipt. The receipt was delivered electronically and was able to be sent to our email address. I even sent it to my notes for future reference. Great German beer selection, the beer tasted REALLY fresh! Really cool atmosphere, can only imagine how fun it would be in the months coming up with the outdoors seating areas. Unfortunately the food was not what I thought it was would be. The schnitzel sandwich was dry and overcooked. Another person in our party had the schnitzel meal. That was also overcooked and dry. Service was great. Very friendly staff and accommodating to anything we wanted. Ambiance was not the German atmosphere I'd expected, but it was fine. Loud inside though. Four of us stopped in for lunch because we heard the food was good. Well they were right. The food was great. Unfortunately it seems the only one working was the cook. Although there was four workers standing at the end of the bar visiting with each other, no one could be bothered to take our orders. We were told to download the menu and place our orders via our phones. It didn't work that great. We had to submit our orders a couple of times. Even though we were all paying cash we still had to download a credit card in order for the app to accept our order. This place certainly isn't very customer friendly. None of us will be returning. The Rail Haus is a fantastic addition to Dover. The beers are great and the hummus platter has ruined all others for me. Beer is obviously a focal point but the overall vibe is very comfortable and not at all seedy. I'd be just as comfortable there having a few drinks after work as I would bringing an out-of-town relative for an outdoor lunch on a nice day. I have never once had a problem with the service. The people who are whining about allegedly inattentive staff or difficulty using the QR code seem to belong to that subset of the population for whom being served by a perceived lesser being is some sort of kink...please do that in private at home and let the rest of us enjoy a genuinely nice place to hang out and have a beer in peace. read more

I saw a post on Instagram about this place. The lack of elevated food experiences in the Dover area influenced me on trying this place. After reading some of the reviews here, some of the less enthusiastic patrons are spot on. First, the drinks did not come out at the same time nor did the food. My beer was a smidge below room temperature and ironically, the food was a smidge above room temperature. I ordered the doner sandwich and let's say the size and quality of the portion left something to be desired. The pretzel bites appeared to be fried. Frying pretzels is not the ideal method of preparation, can they be called pretzels if they are fried? Second, the service or instructions were provided by strangers that were also patrons. Determining who worked there, was harder than a Jeopardy round. Third, there were quite a few children and a sandbox for them to play in. I hope they don't confuse those brown nuggets in the box as part of the equipment or worse, snacks. If you bill yourself out as a beer garden, maybe children shouldn't be part of the atmosphere. Fourth, this place is an orchestra without a conductor. I could not readily see anyone in charge so questions about the menu went unanswered. The menu was not as big as you might think, and I agree with other opinions that the online feature of the menu is rather hard to take in as a whole. Fifth, paying before the food before it even arrived was rather an insult, what if you're not happy with something? That's what you do at Taco Bell, not at a restaurant. This place likes to think it is a restaurant right? Why else would they allow children? If you were looking for an evening out away from the kids and an uncontrolled atmosphere that they bring along with them, you may want to keep looking. I gave it two stars because the place appeared to be clean. read more

What I didn't like was the menu online, ordering online, and then the tip being added (20%). I am sure there was a notification somewhere, but I didn't see it. I am the guy that likes to leave a cash tip and typically overtips. But when I took the order, I am not sure a 20% tip is in order. I will go back, but will likely sit at the bar, so I can be waited on and feel a mandatory tip of 20% is warranted. read more
