I decided to try this spot based on its 4.4-star rating, but unfortunately, my visit didn't live up to the hype. My son and I ordered the biscuits and gravy, which were disappointing--the gravy had an unusual flavor that didn't sit well, and both biscuits were undercooked to the point of being raw in the center. The eggs and hash browns were forgettable, lacking seasoning and finesse. On a brighter note, my wife's broken yolk sandwich was decent, and our server was genuinely kind and attentive, which helped soften an otherwise underwhelming meal. Overall, I left feeling more aligned with a 2-star experience. read more

I loved the booths which gave us enough privacy and also sufficient space to sit and enjoy a good meal. I had the best Tuna sandwich which was so creamy and filling. My party of three visited on a Sunday at 11:30ish a.m., and there was a 25 minute wait. Then we waited another 30 minutes for our food. The moral of the story is that if you want to visit during weekend brunch hours, you need to bring your patience. Water and drinks were served promptly, though. They also offer self-serve coffee, so you don't need to wait for a refill. We ordered the lavender lemonade, which was nice and sweet and not too floral, but was a beautiful hazy lavender hue. My favorite thing at Cafe Patachou is the California Dreamer, which is an omelette filled with avocado, white cheddar, sour cream and jalapenos. It has a little bit of a kick from the jalapenos, but even still, I'm so much of a California girl that I requested hot sauce. It comes with arugula and your choice of toast. I always get the cinnamon toast at Cafe Patachou, because it's the best cinnamon toast I've ever had, full stop. We also got the Green Goddess salad, no protein. It was very good and included spinach, avocado, cucumber, tomatoes, radish, sugared pecans, feta, hard-boiled egg and green goddess dressing. This is a tasty salad, and is great if you want a little something that feels healthy and light. One thing to keep in mind is that when there are lots of people in the dining room, it can be loud. I felt like I had to raise my voice to talk to the people at my table. Another thing to keep in mind is that if you have to wait for a table, there are some swinging seats a few steps away from the restaurant, so you can go sit there and swing for a bit while you wait for them to text you that your table is ready.

The gravy is homemade and has actual sausage in it (!) and it's served hot, not lukewarm. And if you get an egg cooked over easy to add to the mess, the egg will be cooked perfectly. Now, the biscuits in the b&gs may or may not be homemade. If you must know (and I know you must), the biscuits are a little too soft to hold up to all of that gravy. I wish the biscuits were just a touch more crispy on the outside. But this is me nitpicking. For great biscuits and gravy, go to Good Morning Mama's. For a great and unusual sandwich, get the Mama's Favorite: sliced hardboiled eggs, bacon, red onions, tomato, pickles, dill havarti cheese and horseradish aioli on slices of brioche bread. It sounds like a crazy amalgam of ingredients and a crotchety old man's dream sandwich, but just trust me! The Mama's Favorite might be a favorite for a reason. It's really freaking good. You're not going to want to make out with anyone after eating it, but you could also use it as a litmus test: How much do you want to make out with me? Are you willing to taste dill pickles and funky cheese and boiled eggs? Are you feeling lucky, punk? Because anyone who would make out with you after you ate this sandwich would be lucky, indeed. The soup of the day was Italian Wedding Soup, which had mini meatballs and spinach leaves and thin spaghetti noodles in a chicken broth-based soup. It was good. You can get a cup or bowl of any of the soups. Good Morning Mama's has a very nice ambiance going on: You seat yourself, which I am 100% behind always. You can sit outside on their big patio, or anywhere in their indoor dining room, which has booths and tables and even bar seating. Grab a menu as you enter. It's a very casual and relaxed vibe here. The service is top-notch, friendly and personable but efficient and casual, like the servers have been serving for decades. I like Good Morning Mama's a lot.

There is much more going on here than what the name implies, because Mornings has an unexpected Spanish flair to their menu. This was a pleasant discovery and makes me want to return soon to explore more of the menu. I love breakfast. I especially love splurging and eating breakfast out. I feel like eating breakfast at a restaurant is so indulgent. It's so simple and convenient to eat breakfast at home. To take the time to leave the house and enjoy a sit-down restaurant for the first meal of the day is so extravagant. I know I sound crazy, but I'm serious. Breakfast dates just hit different. And breakfast dates with your mom for her birthday are even more special. But here is my issue with most breakfast joints: they are all the same. It always makes me laugh when you are going to meet someone for breakfast and a lengthy discussion ensues over where to go. Does it even matter? They all serve the same things: Multiple forms of eggs, pancakes, french toast, breakfast meats and probably a "skillet" meal. You might be lucky enough to find a chef who knows how to prepare a proper eggs benedict (The key? Restraint. A little hollandaise goes a long way), but beyond that, pick wherever you want to go. The menu will most likely be a carbon-copy. Well, color me surprised when I gazed upon the menu at Mornings! A carne asada skillet, the bad hombre omelette with chorizo, black beans and habanero cheese. They also offer tres leches pancakes, four types of benedcits and chilaquiles. This menu was fresh and different compared to mose midwestern breakfast establishments. This came as such a welcomed surprise. After receiving a hot cup of coffee, I decided on the chilaquiles. I had only heard of this dish, but had never had the opportunity to try it out. Have you ever had a dish that you didn't particularly enjoy, and yet you could tell that it was made really well? This was my experience with chilaquiles. If you aren't familiar, chilaquiles are tortilla chips that have been simmered in salsa rojo or verde. I was slightly concerned about ordering wet tortillas, but I am always down for a new experience. Honestly, I won't be ordering the chilaquiles, again. They were pretty much what I expected after reading the description. However, I was still impressed with the dish. Mornings did a great job, and I would actully recommend them to someone who enjoys chilaquiles. Personally, I would rather try some other dishes and flavors on the menu. But my thought was simple: If I am enjoying a dish that I don't seem to be a fan of now that I have tried it, how great are the rest of thes dishes on the menu that I know I would enjoy! Whether its a solo trip, a nice birthday date with my mom, or a breakfast burrito to go to savor after my morning yoga class, I will definitely be back to Mornings.
