If you are looking for good quality pub food at a fair price, you found it here at this cute little place in the heart of Old Saybrook. Nestled on Main Street, RHT provides good food and good service. This was my first visit at RHT and it did not disappoint. I came with my sister. She got a chopped Greek salad that came in an epic tower. I got the Cobb Salad that was perfectly proportioned with fresh ingredients. We split some honey chipotle boneless wings and fries. The wings were perfectly crispy, yet tender in the middle. I don't know what magic they put into making them, but I'm going back for more. The fries were flavorful and perfectly crispy. We came at 11:30 on a wintry Saturday and were the first ones there. By the time we left, there were 3-4 other couples dining. My guess is this place is packed in the evenings and especially in the summer. Food is served on ceramic plates, but utensils and drinks in plastic. If that is something you care about, you won't give it a thought when you are digging into the food. Bottom line, try it out, you won't be disappointed. read more

This location has two parts so if you're feeling mellow and want to avoid the bar crowd they have a very upbeat alternative side almost appearing like a whole different restaurant. A Very Negative and Bizarre Server Experience - Poor Service In General The servers were miserable from Day 1 I started patronizing The Rabbit Hole except Corsey. I have been patronizing this bar for over a month now at least every other night when I'm in town. The first server I dealt with was so unpleasant. She asked me if I wanted food and I said no I wasn't hungry. Then less than 10 minutes later I get, "are you going to order food?" Both times I was asked as if I was not spending enough money for Heather. I look at her and say I am not hungry. My Dad just died. Not hungry." She apologizes in a way that has zero sincerity. I am wondering why the push or if I misunderstood. I glance at the woman next to me and she nods and smiles a smirk. She clearly agrees with a look and nod of "at a boy." Just a miserable hostile server. I let it go. No complaint. Over the next several weeks I get served well and then other times I get poor service. Heather never smiles and is uncomfortable to be around. Sheer misery exudes from her. Hostile. The Rabbit Hole is regularly empty so I assume it's the lack of business. Then I realize she's just a miserable person who never smiles towards any customer. I let it go. No complaint. I sit next to the four servers complaining over the next 6 weeks since the place is often empty at 10pm. They complain a lot. I let it go. No complaint. I'm a medical student, a doctor next month, home to clean out my Dad's estate for my family. I'm not looking for trouble or creating any. I don't talk much. I just need a beer and a social environment to offset throwing away my childhood. Not too much to ask for and an easy customer. On my way back from Block Island Thursday after being on Block Island since Monday morning I make a special stop to give one of the servers referrals to doctors I researched and vetted for her (2hrs of research). She was struggling to find a specialist and that's easy for me. I even did the background checks. I asked her ahead of time if I could help her. She said yes. Tonight, Sunday, I go in and sit down. Heather approaches me and says we're closed. There are patrons at the bar, the lights are on, and the doors are unlocked. Hmmm, then she says they're closed for me. I give her a look of bewilderment. She says you made my friend uncomfortable last week and talked about me. I still give her a look of bewilderment and ask, "the blonde?". She says yes. As I have stated previously, there are a lot of reasons to stop patronizing The Rabbit Hole. I said ok and walked out. Still stunned that the server who hugged me and thanked me for the referrals complained about me making her uncomfortable. I was only in once last week since I was on Block Island so it had to be her. Completely blindsided by this one. No clue what could have been misconstrued. Wondering now if it could have been two weeks ago and the server who works in the restaurant? I don't know her name. But once again, I said nothing inappropriate to her either. She was talking about meeting her boyfriend's parents and being nervous. Gave her some pointers and that was it. If she was uncomfortable she said nothing and I never intended to make her uncomfortable. Bizarre. Heather also said I talked about her. I assume she means negatively based on the refusal of service. Still clueless. She's curt, rude, and miserable, but if she does not know that by now she's in denial. However, I only ever said she was rude and unpleasant. That was over a month ago and I said it to Corsey the night after the food ordering fiasco searching for any feedback why a server would act like that to a customer. Over a month later this comes out now? Bizarre. Heather said last week and I only came in Thursday for the referral and a beer. I wonder if she got the wrong person? At least I don't have to grin-and-bare Heather's constant hostile, negative mood. Uncomfortable? You made me uncomfortable so here is my complaint. People make you uncomfortable regularly, but that's life. No one refuses you service for it. Giving bad service... own it! Jack needs to get a handle on his bitchy waitstaff. Visiting old Saybrook to see Big Al Anderson, I stopped by here with my old pal Chas and we were very pleased with the "feel" of this bar/pub. Very unique setup with restaurant on one side, bar on the other. I got the impression they shared a kitchen. The Bartender/sever was very attentive and energetic, and after we ordered the food was served promptly! We both enjoyed our burgers, superb! There is a phenomenal bartender who can actually service the bar and all tables at once. Other times, great friendly women tending bar. I apologize for not remembering their names. Love their onion rings with signature sauce. Last two times had a chicken sandwich with bacon, Jack cheese and Mayo. Very delicious but small... could almost eat two but at $12 not an option. Fries or onion rings are extra. We have not lived in the area all that long but this is a local hangout... people seem to know and very friendly towards each other. Friends had mentioned they ate at The Rabbit Hole so thought we'd check it out. It's a little on the dark side but found a seat at a high top near the bar. Took a few minutes to be acknowledged by the staff but once the waitress came over she was very nice. They have a pretty good drink and beer srlection, though it would have been nice to know the Happy Hour specials before we ordered. We ordered nachos to start which were very good-even better since they were on the HH menu and were only $8. Had the Rock out burger and the California burger, both ordered pink. They were a bit more red than pink but we really enjoyed them. However, for the price (9.50 & 10.50) you'd expect at least potato chips to come with. I stop in every few weeks for a dog and beer and here's a list of the pros and cons: The Goods: -A large selection of gourmet hotdogs and burgers(haven't had a burger yet) *you can sub out the dogs/burgers for veggie etc -Decent tap selection -Decent bottle selection -Friendly bartenders/locals -Lots of TV's (always a game on) -Monday football food/beer deals The bad: -Beers on tap are priced a little too high in my opinion -The shuffleboard (from previous bar) is gone -The wallpaper is quite tacky -Too much neon lighting! As you can tell it's not a bad place. I'm just a little disappointed by the way they decorated the bar ie the wallpaper and the baaad lights. Picky? Yes but by having a little more of an ambiance I'd probably spend more time here. I absolutely LOVE Rabbit Hole Tavern! I'm a local and a "pescatarian" and this is the best spot! You can get vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, or carnivore pub cuisine and it's all delicious. If you gave up red meat and wish you could still have a juicy burger, love different things or just want some awesome tuna give their tuna burgers a try - they are out of this world. Their meatless hot dogs are amazing. Fries (especially the buffalo cheese fries) are outstanding. Pretty much everything I have ordered at Jack Rabbit's has been fantastic. Friend's have tried their wings and have been pleased as well. The options are endless too - get your burgers or dogs a slew of different ways and they have lobster dogs too! I have had very mixed experiences here. The first time I came was around 5 PM on a Friday. The place was packed and everybody in there seemed to be extremely bombed. Not fun drunks, very obnoxious, aggressive, jerks. This surprised me since it wasn't late. I think we had two drinks and left as quickly as possible. It had the vibe that a fight was going to break out at any moment. Maybe it was a full moon. Next time I decided to come around 1 PM on a weekday and it was the complete opposite experience. Bartender was great, food was good, drinks were good. Overall I like the place but wouldn't come at times when it's crowded. As others have mentioned, they seem to really run a bare bones operation staffing wise. Everyone hustles and busts their ass. But from a customer perspective, service suffers greatly. Nobody wants to wait 15 minutes for a refill or to get a side of ketchup. It's definitely filled with locals. Went for some sliders while I was visiting since this is always a go to stop when I'm back up North for a visit. Food was so good...just as great as it was years ago. I didn't drink this time, but my friends had 2 of their many beers on tap and enjoyed them. I love the fact that you can choose different sliders, and they have an incredible variety. My son had a hot dog, and it was gone so fast! He loved it. Only negative feedback is the service was a little slow. They weren't packed, and the girls told us to call them if we needed anything...but we weren't really comfortable yelling for them and wish they had checked in on us a little more.
