Son #1 had a meatloaf melt that he enjoyed. Both my husband and our second born son had the Mac and cheese. Each added some extra toppings and ate every bite. No condiments, but I guess the menu did not specify there would be any so that part was my miss. It would be nice with a garlic aioli! I had to eat it with ketchup at home. Oh, and their ketchup? Gross too! Luckily, I had my own Heinz ketchup at home. The bread it was on was very good and well grilled. Maybe next time I'd see if I could just order some grilled bread and cut my losses. I would be hesitant to go back. Also, very oddly, the majority of the photos posted to yelp in the last year are of items that are NOT on the menu!! Our waitress was wonderful and very kind. However, the experience was marred by the management or owner, whose role isn't clear. He was very rude to his staff, which was upsetting. We were seated at a high-top table near the bookcase, and we saw the "manager" yelling at a busser and speaking poorly about him to a bartender right in front of customers. Additionally, he scolded a waitress for returning an untouched dish, telling her, "it's coming out of your paycheck," again in front of guests. This behavior upset my husband, as it's not how you treat staff. His attitude really spoiled our experience. Since we live nearby, we're disappointed and hesitant to return because of the management. I hope this review encourages better respect and improvements.

As for the food, everything tasted good, but I couldn't shake the feeling that the value wasn't quite there. I ordered the Chicken Limon ($27). The flavors were excellent, but the portion was surprisingly small: two small pieces of chicken, vegetables, capers, and a very modest serving of whipped potatoes. My companion's Eggplant Pomodoro ($23) was also tasty, but felt incomplete. A small side of penne would have gone a long way. Dessert followed the same pattern. The crème brûlée had great flavor and a nicely caramelized shell, but was light on custard. The tiramisu tasted good but was tiny for a $12 dessert. Our total for two entrées, two desserts, and two beverages came to a little over $100 before tip. While we enjoyed the meal, the portion sizes and value left us wanting more. That said, the food was genuinely good, the restaurant was clean and welcoming, and the location is hard to beat. Arrived and noticed it was next to the ice cream shop I wrote about not too long ago so pretty sure I hustled found my one, two punch for a meal sometime soon. When inside waitress / bartender got the name and said it would be a few more minutes. Bar was full. While my partner and I waited a young girl approached and was super kind enough to give us a small rubber duck (assuming a game machine somewhere in the place) which sparked a conversation which then grandma? joined followed by mom. Once good came out we said our goodbyes and off we went. As for the food, burger hit the spot. Cooked medium rare as asked, thick, and also delicious the next day cold. The girlfriend had the vegetarian panini which she was full after a couple bites and enjoyed it the following day. Reminds me of my hometown tavern; good food, lots of locals, and a place you want to come back to.

Contemporary wood paneled room with a window wall overlooking the river below. Expertly made martinis followed by watermelon beet and feta salad; and wild mushrooms with Parmesan bread crumbs, mint, fried rosemary and whipped ricotta. Both were very tasty expressions of the season. Our table raved over the tagliarini with a local beef, pork and veg ragu and a shellfish version with a spicy puttanesca. The menu changes regularly to highlight the best of the season and local producers. Sometimes it's nice to eat delicious food with no blasting music, at reasonable prices (app/salads: $12-16, most entrees high 20's to $36) just hanging with happy well fed adults enjoying conversation. It would have been 5 stars but for the forgetting of complimentary bread service until we asked for it during the entrees. The bread was mediocre and chewy. Our primary waitperson sort of disappeared for a bit. An evening special of soba noodles with julienne vegetables was really just a bowl of noodles with little evidence of any veggies. RT is located in Chester Center, which is a top CT town. Top tier location. The restaurant is cute, but cramped. After we were seated, a while passed before we saw our server. We were ready to order for 10 minutes and she still hadn't checked in with us. I told another employee that we wanted to see our server. She shook her head and we waited another 5 minutes. We finally were able to order. Then people who arrived after us, and ordered after us, received food first. Multiple tables. Through multiple service issues, there was no recognition from the employees about the issues. Our primary server asked how things were going when she first checked in with us. I told her the truth. And she didn't seem like she cared. She was apparently hoping that I would just say "good". The food was mixed. My son and I split a burger and an order of chilaquiles. The chilaquiles was good. The burger was medium rare rather than the medium we asked for. The burger was underseasoned. It may not have been seasoned at all. The bottom part of the bun was cut at a weird angle. As the juices flowed from the burger, it soaked the short side of the burger bun so that it was unusable. My Dad said his salad featuring peaches and nuts, barely had any peaches or nuts. I'm unlikely to eat at River Tavern again anytime soon. 2.5 Stars
