We were on our way to Cristy's when I saw the sign for brunch at Chips. We went and to my surprise I was pleased. Our server was Maria awesome lady very friendly great table side manner. The food was good . The restaurant is clean but not much has changed in many years. I will do brunch again and hopefully with Maria.

I love going to Chips. I have been going here for years. My most recent time was in June which these pictures are from. Our server was fantastic and unfortunately I cannot recall her name offhand. We almost had her convinced to join our Book Club. lol she was super friendly, very knowledgeable and funny. We all ordered different salads. I ordered the cob. Unfortunately I do not recall what my friends had ordered but I did take pictures of them.

We had been shopping at the nearby outlet mall and asked one of the store staff where they would have lunch. She enthusiastically recommended this spot as where the locals go. So off we went! It was surprisingly busy for a rainy, off meal time, weekday. There did not seem to be enough staff and we had to wait by the hostess stand for a bit to be seated. The bartender took notice of us and assured us someone would be there soon. A waitress passed with food and said she'd be back in a moment so we never felt ignored as we waited. We parked in a good sized lot behind the building and entered at the door closest to parking. This took us into the bar area where many tables were filled and several folks were seated at the bar. The hostess stand is near the 2nd door, toward the middle of the restaurant. Outdoor dining is available, but on this rainy cold day it was closed. We were seated up a couple of step in an area filled with booths that only had a couple other tables occupied. Our poor waitress seemed to be really 'run ragged'. She never complained and was super helpful and patient. We placed a drinks order which came out pretty quickly and we were ready to order when she returned. I started with their French martini which they make the same way I do at home (there seem to be many varieties of this cocktail) and it comes with an extra serving in a small cocktail shaker. Nice. They have a number of craft beers on tap, beers in cans and a full bar including house 'drink specials'. My SO ordered pastrami on a pretzel bun and I went for the burrito with steak (you have options on the protein). The bun is tasty, the pastrami mostly lean with some of the fat included. This is a taste preference. Some like that, some do not. For those who do not, it wasn't excessive. The burrito is Huge and comes with salsa and sour cream on the side. I easily got two meals out of this burrito and when I asked for a take away container, our waitress brought lids for those sides. Besides the steak, which was tender and tasty, there is Mexican rice w/spices and corn, and other goodness in there (see photo). My burrito came with a side salad which I very much appreciated. A mix of greens with a good number of cucumber slices, shredded carrot, cherry tomato with dressing on the side. Everything was fresh. I eat my salad after my entrée as a rule, and the burrito was so filling (even just half of it) I had a hard time eating the salad! There is one ladies room which is handicapped accessible from the outside. From the dining area we were in, it's two steps down. There is a baby changing table in there and was nice and clean. I would absolutely stop by this restaurant again.

Awesome spot! Under new ownership, but they kept the vibe of the original, but very clean and brighter. Lots of menu choices and great specials. I had the coconut shrimp and lobster roll, both a 10/10 but the coconut shrimp was best I ever had! Friendly service, good drinks, will definitely be returning!

Very good food, but unfortunately a group of obnoxious lunch regulars at the bar make for an unpleasant experience

Good food, and at a fair price in line with other similar places like this. I go here often with my family and will continue to.

Stumbled upon this gem of a place yesterday and was genuinely impressed from start to finish. The…read morefood was absolutely delicious -- the pretzel bites arrived hot and fresh, the meatloaf was hearty and comforting, and the green beans were cooked to absolute perfection. The shepherd's pie was another standout, cozy, flavorful, and wonderfully filling. And do not skip the bread pudding -- it was absolutely amazing and the perfect sweet finish to the meal. The only negative was our booth: right in front of the door, so every time it opened (and it was often), we got blasted with cold air. Next time we'll sit further in or upstairs. If you're running around Old Saybrook and need a quick, hearty meal, this is the place to be.

With some good and some not-so good, we concluded that we aren't likely to return -- in spite of the really yummy tartar sauce (more on that in a moment). Penny Lane is a bit of an English Pub-style restaurant on two levels. We ate upstairs since the lower level was filled (steps, no elevator that we saw). Service was slow to nonexistent. It took us ten minutes to get recognized by a server who asked if we wanted something to drink and took another five minutes to get it. After we ordered we waited 25 minutes to get our food. We got no drink refills. Maybe service is better in the first floor? Ah, the food. Fish and Chips is essentially pub food, so that's what we got. The crust was light and buttery, quite good. The fish was utterly without any sort of flavor, as bland as could be imagined in your worst imagining. The tartar sauce was super good, but it just couldn't disguise the fact that the fish was tasteless. We also tried the poached egg and corned beef hash, which was ok though the hash was kind ... well, and of a hash, unremarkable at best. Conclusion: There was little that was appealing in our experience. Oh yeah, another ten minutes to get our bill... a long afternoon.

Where do I start? I could start with the absolutely awful music that was playing. I'm sorry, but these 2 people have no business being on a microphone and it's hard to believe anyone would pay them to do so. I will say, in fairness, that there was only 1 bartender/server. Yes, the same person doing both...so it's obvious that there might be a wait. She took our drink orders and left us with menus. Came back with a tray of drinks, only to spill them on the ground and had to go get new ones. Finally got the drinks and the beer was not cold at all. Ordered 3 orders of wings and a wrap. How difficult is that? About 30 minutes later we get 1 order of wings and the wrap. In the meantime, 3 other tables came in and sat down. 30 minutes more, we still don't have the other 2 orders of wings and the tables that came in after us are already served and eating. Waitress never comes over to see if we need anything. When she finally does come over we explain still waiting on wings. She acted clueless as if she didn't know what was happening. We waited, stupidly, another 30 minutes and finally had to tell her we were leaving. She asked if we wanted the wings removed from the check...REALLY? No, we'd love to pay for food we didn't receive! I went downstairs and asked for a manager, of course I was told there wasn't one. But the woman there said our wings were given to another table. I don't really believe that. And even if it was true, HOW LONG does it take to make 6 wings? Please don't waste your time going to this place.
