stopped here on Halloween and I absolutely love that this place was an old bank! We sat up top and our server was very nice and welcoming! The only downside is that when you're upstairs and downstairs is really busy, it takes a little bit longer for them to come back up which is understandable. I don't remember the exact name of what I got but it was fries and brisket or pulled pork - it was drenched in this bbq sauce that was overpowering and just wasn't for me. however, my fiance enjoyed his huge burger and my mom liked her chicken sandwich but was a little overcooked on the outside. read more

Stopped by before a concert at the Oakdale. Small wait which was fine, we were greeted once it was our turn. We chose a side table that was half booth. The music was metal so that was awesome and we loved the photos on the wall. I started with a cider on tap- that was sweet and sour. I wish I got the name bc it was delicious. For dinner we skipped apps and went straight to an entree. I chose the nightmare on main st with a side of onion rings. The rings were super crunchy which I loved. The burger was really thick and almost too tall to eat- almost. It was great, the tomato was thick, the burger was seasoned great and the right temp. The bacon was perfect. My only issue was it was smothered in bbq sauce and not the aioli. So it made the burger sweet and not savory. I still ate it, and it was good but that was disappointing. My husband had the aioli on his instead of bbq sauce.. again it was delicious and we ate it without complaining but it was a small miss. Overall, it was a really great place to eat. read more

Very busy, but chill bar on Main Street in Wallingford. We went to Knuckleheads with coworkers for drinks and food. We had a large group of 8 people and it took awhile to be seated (poor planning on our part for going at 7 o'clock on a Friday evening). The space looks very cool and moody with a grand staircase, but the dining area is small. We weren't in a rush and were able to get drinks from the bar while we waited. The food was excellent and the food came out very fast. There was a mishap with one of our entrees and it was quickly fixed. Our server was an absolute sweet heart too. Most people at our table got appetizers to share: Wings, Waffle Fries, Sweet Potato Fries and Fried Pickles. The menu was small, but had a variety for everyone. I am a vegetarian so I got the Bang Bang Cauliflower and the Veggie Wrap. These options are also vegan! The cauliflower was fried and crunchy, smothered in sweet chili sauce. My favorite part about my veggie wrap was that there were thinly sliced pickles in it. It felt like a handheld salad because the wrap was filled with lettuce, tomato, onion and a diced up veggie burger. Other dishes that were ordered at our table were Bang Bang Shrimp, Pig Wings, and Burgers. Overall, we had a great meal and time at Knuckleheads. I always say that it's a good thing when bars or restaurants are a full house. I can see us dining in again soon. read more

This should be a 5 star review as the food was amazing and service excellent. My wife and I tried Knuckleheads a couple of weeks ago and we sat at a small table in the bar. PERFECT. We did notice how absurdly bright the other side of the room was against the wall and noted we would never sit there. Upstairs lighting and bar lighting were all reasonably bright but not blinding. Went back with our adult kids recently and had no choice but to sit under the extremely bright lights against the wall. I had a headache by the time we left and other patrons next to us were complaining about the brightness too. I did ask about diming the light slightly and never got a reply. It's too bad as my son enjoyed the good bourbon selection and I enjoyed the beer selection. Food and service excellent and decor is cool. Seems like lighting levels would be such a simple thing to get right. We will leave next time if we cant get a table upstairs or on the bar side if the lights are so bright next time. read more

Could not have been more disappointed. we sat at the bar for a few minutes not long bartender approached us, not saying hello or welcome just looking at us. Weird,,not a great start. We both ordered vodka tonic. It was served in a 16 ounce beer glass. mostly tonic not much vodka again weird. He did not seem interested in us at all. Food was good, big portions, wait staff was nice. But it's a little strange that there are no prices on the paper menu, apparently, they want you to go online with a QR code. And if someone else in the restaurant already has the paper menu, you have to wait to see it and decide what you want. This was our first time trying Knuckleheads. Upon walking in, you notice a grand stair case that leads to upstairs seating. Downstairs is a bar and dining area. We were seated downstairs. It was a late Saturday afternoon, so it wasn't very busy. We decided to try some Buffalo wings and get sandwiches. Our server was pleasant and friendly, always nearby when we needed her. The wings came out fairly quickly. They were crispy and tangy. It's was hard not to compare them to other nearby places. They were good. The sauce was a bit sweet. They aren't my favorite wings, but they definitely are far from bad! My husband ordered a steak and cheese with fries. He loved it. It's was full and cooked well and delicious! I got a BBQ chicken melt with waffle fries. The sandwich was good. The chicken was very crunchy. It's was very tasty. The waffle fries were really good, too! read more

My husband and I went to Knuckleheads recently to celebrate his birthday. He had been a few times prior and always talked about how good the food was. We started with fried pickles which were delicious! The dipping sauce was really good as well. For dinner, I had the Cuban B burger and he had the BBQ burger. Not only was it delicious but they are HUGE!! We could have easily shared one after the appetizer. The cook was perfect and the flavor was spot on. The restaurant wasn't overly busy and the service was good. Our waitress was friendly and attentive and I give them credit for climbing those stairs with good trays! Overall was ok but expected better. Seated right away. Menu is through code on the phone and ordered with server. Server suggested honey bbq because it's nonspicy but it had a kick to it so my kid couldn't try it. Pigs wings was interesting and yummy with sauce. Three of us ordered Knucklehead burger, each had something wrong with it. Two of ours had burnt buns, one of them wanted no mayo but still had mayo inside. We were driving through Wallingford and it was almost 8PM and I read on Yelp this place had patty melts and that's one of my favorite foods so we stopped here. Looks like it was an old bank from the looks of the inside but cool. We waited where it says to wait to be seated for at least 5 minutes with waitresses passing us and the bartender looking at us but no one said a word. Finally a girl said she would seat us in a minute and we had to wait while she cleaned a table (not the one she sat us at) until she seated us. We knew what we wanted but she was not our waitress so we waited some more. Our poor waitress had tables upstairs and tables downstairs and seemed to have too much on her plate; literally- she was carrying up 4-5 trays of food. Finally, when she came over we told her we were in a bit of a rush and ordered the Patty melt with onion rings and a soda. She was super efficient but did not like that it was a noname ketchup. Why not Heinz? Very quickly she delivered the patty melts that were honestly outstanding. So tasty and so perfectly medium rare- even the second rate catsup couldn't destroy it. Was so happy to take the other half for lunch the next day. Will definitely come back since I pass through here a few times a month. read more

Okay, I gave a mildly scathing review of the original location years ago, and after my recent experience, I definitely need to update it. First of all, I had been in this space when it was a different restaurant, so I was interested to see how Knuckleheads adapted this space. They kept a lot of the classic aesthetic the same, which is a big difference from the feel of the old location. A little less unique, but WAY brighter. My only complaint would be the acoustics, but it's hard to avoid with ceilings as high as this building. The service was great. The bartender was attentive and kept coming back throughout his shift to either check on us or chat in general. When it came time to order, I asked his opinion on two different hot dogs (all bacon wrapped btw, which is amazing), and he completely swerved to his favorite version of the hot dogs they sell. As evidenced by the picture, it was DELICIOUS. BLT dog with cheese sauce and raw onion, something I never would've offered normally but was amazing. The tap selection is great, the service has improved, the space is now interesting classic architecture, and the food was amazing. Definitely check it out! read more

I think I'm the real knuckehead here, for never coming before! The street is so cute, a little downtown area in Wallingford. We stopped by as we were coming back from New Haven and wanted a quick bite to eat to eat before we headed home. Since no one I was with has ever been, we figured we would give it a try. When we walked in, it was nothing like I imagined. It was quite beautiful, actually. There was a grand staircase at the entryway, and it reminded me of a library. Very relaxed for a bar. We were greeted and sat by the bar at a table. We ordered the brussel sprouts with bacon and the plantains with a mayo/ketchup dip. Both were delicious. I got the bbq bacon burger made with bbq sauce bacon and onion rings served with a side of sweet potato fries topped with agave and cinnamon. They were my favorite and absolutely amazing! They were pretty busy, it was a little loud with the music and the buzz of people. Their new location is much bigger and pretty cool. I got the elk sausage and a side salad. The sausage had a tough snap, making it a bit difficult to bite through but very tasty. I loved that the side salad had pickled onions in it. Tables were a little squished, I was worried about hitting the table next to us when I had to get out to go to the bathroom, another 4-5" between tables would have sufficed. Our waitress was friendly but didn't come to check on us except for immediately when the food came out and we had to flag her down for drink refills. Overall, def plan on going back, but maybe not on a weekend. read more

Knuckleheads is a craft beer bar and restaurant that opened in Walingford, Connecticut in 2011. It was founded by Anthony Morgillo. After working several odd jobs in the food industry for over a decade, Morgillo decided to open his own restaurant. He found a space at 80 Center Street and decided to make a menu with classic American fare and a great selection of craft beer on tap. 6 months prior, Morgillo adopted a pit bull who he referred to as a "knucklehead". He named the venture 'Knuckleheads" and the pit bull became the official mascot. When a men's clothing store closed next door the following year, Morgillo jumped at the opportunity to take over the space and expanded the square footage of Knuckleheads. In December 2022, Knuckleheads moved up the street to the historic former First National Bank Building at 9 N. Main Street. The space had previously been home to J. Christian's Restaurant & Lounge for several years. I visited Knuckleheads several times when they were at their original location on Center Street. They always had excellent food and an amazing selection of craft beers on tap. I recently stopped by for lunch when I had a half-day off from work. This was my first time visiting them at their new location. I really love the new space in the historic bank building. The decor doesn't exactly feel like the old Knuckleheads yet, but in time I'm sure that will change. I pulled up a seat at the bar and ordered a draught pour of Bad Sons Beer Company's "Hyrdoponic" (Hazy New England IPA). It was dank with some excellent citrus and tropical fruit notes. For food, I decided to order two of their most popular dishes: "Pig Wings" (pork shank meat on the bone with Acapulco Gold and Honey BBQ dipping sauces) and "Duck Wings" (crispy duck wings tossed in orange-ginger sauce). The pig wings were so nice and tender that the meat practically melted off of the bone. I really loved the Asian flavors in the duck wings too. I was so full afterwards. I washed everything down with a draught pour of Rogue Ales' "Barrel-Aged Old Crusty" (oak barrel-aged barleywine) which was a 2013 vintage. It was real smooth with nice caramel notes. Congratulations to Knuckleheads on their new location! I look forward to more visits! read more

Wow! I'm so happy we came here! Amazing food, I love their chicken here! They have a lot of non-red meat options which is great! Their fries are also crispy and crunchy! The place is cute too, inside a old building in the center of town, with moody lighting, fun for drinks for sure! Our waitress was polite to us and refilled our water consistently! But she didn't take our check for around 20 minutes and we got really irritated at that. But great food and place! read more

My wife and I came here tonight for a date night, and it was the first time we've visited since they moved to the new building. Everything was amazing. The food was so unbelievably good and our waitress provided arguably the best service we've ever had at any restaurant. (We sat upstairs next to the window at her suggestion which was wonderful) While it's a completely different vibe than the old building, we absolutely loved how open and elegant the place felt, while still feeling welcome to underdressed individuals such as ourselves. For food we got the Big Pretzel and Cheese dip (comes with pickle slices too!) and it was honestly one of the best pretzels we've ever had. It usually one we like to try and this one was really awesome. For dinner, we got a Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich and the Spanky Approved (Buffalo Chix Melt) and they were both 10 out of 10 dishes. We split 1/2 and 1/2 because we both wanted to try to others' so badly. Again, everything was awesome from the food all the way to our superb waitress. We already called a few friends and family members to tell them we need to bring them here as we know they will love it too! read more

1/31/23 I got together with fellow retiree Ron M here, in their new location, after a long absence on my part. Although putting out a very different, more upscale vibe than their former location, I'd have to say I like them both equally well. The old place had a comfortable "dive bar" feel while this place has high ceilings and a classier decor. Both great to me. Their menus are on those Q-code thingies that make it easier to reflect rapidly changing prices and are less susceptible to passing along whatever the virus of the week is. Only problem was that my dining partner was unable to download it, so I sent it to him via text. That was a bit convoluted! One star off for that inconvenience. The menu hasn't changed much since I last visited (not a bad thing). We started with a plate of 10 Buffalo wings that were just spicy enough without being too hot. Ron chose the cheesesteak sub that was LOADED with as he described it, "very tender" very thin slices of beef w/onions & peppers. It's offered with a choice of five different cheeses. I think I know what I'll have on my next visit. I had what is normally an app of 6 "pig wings" or shanks w/BBQ sauce and a honey/horseradish sauce that makes for a sweet/savory combo. It's a great addition to these "wings". They were, as I remembered, very flavorful and filling. I took home five of the six after eating most of the Buffalo wings. Service was very prompt and upbeat, checking in a couple of times to ask how everything was and for refills on our soft drinks. Looks like another great pub to put into our rotation. read more

When I walked in, I instantly noticed the music memorabilia. Also, the music. Loved it! My friend and I were seated after a 5 minute wait (it's Friday, after work, this is expected). Our waitress was fast though! Took our drink and food order, and went along. I ordered the Char Siu Pig Wings and my friend ordered boneless wings. These both came out fast. I grabbed a wing and right away, it had weight to it! I took a bite and it fell off the bone. VERY flavorful, not fatty at all, and just delicious! I couldn't eat all of mine, so lunch for tomorrow guaranteed. All in all, an awesome place, fun experience, and I will most certainly be back! read more

I met a friend last night at knuckleheads for dinner. Parking was a little difficult but other than that everything was great. I loved knuckleheads menu had many options for me with diet restrictions. I had a grilled chicken sandwich and salad and forgot to take a picture. Tried the new location. First, the food is excellent. The burgers are suitably juicy, flavorful, large (9 oz. for the adults), and the kids meals are substantial for their price, and they don't cheap out on the buns or anything like that. The service was excellent. I think I've discovered my local source for takeout restaurant burgers in Wallingford, now that the Chuck Wagon is gone forever. But...the space needs help. While the high ceiling and windows offer a nice vibe and plenty of natural light during the day, there are way too many hard surfaces, so the noise level is at the edge of unbearable. We practically have to shout at each other at the table to be heard in conversation, and that's in combination with the piped-in music which is also a bit louder than necessary. I don't know what designer thought it would be a good idea for the centerpiece of the venue to be a steep, giant, staircase that looks like a rejected set from the Titanic movie, but it's one of the primary villains in the noise profile of the space. Some fancy carpet, decorative ceiling clouds, or some actual booths, or privacy screens for the upstairs area would make a huge difference. read more
