Intro: We showed the East side some love tonight by grabbing dinner at R&L Lounge on Mill Street. It is one of the highest rated polish restaurants in Buffalo and the third restaurant of 52 that we will be reviewing this year. Setting: A true hole in the wall with polish flair and pictures of Ronnie and Lottie in the 1950's spread across the walls. Menu: When we asked Ronnie for the menu, he replied "You're looking at it.". We knew we were in for a treat and ordered the combination plate that he recommended- Gołąbki and pierogis with a slice of rye bread. We washed it down with a bottle of Polish beer (Tyskie) from a brewery that has been in existence since the 1600's. It was the first time I've had Polish. Food: The Gołąbki was one of the most flavorful dishes I have had in a long time. The sauce was slightly sweet and oh-so scrumptious. The cabbage rolls were great and the Lottie-style pierogies topped it all off. The plates were $8 a piece and left us full. Overall: Awesome experience. Ronnie and Lottie made for a memorable night and the food was just as enjoyable as the company. Ronnie told us about his life as a child in Poland and early years in America and the story about how he ended up working at the lounge. Lottie brought me back in time to my Polish grandmother's kitchen with her stories of youth and sledding at the central terminal. We will definitely be coming back the next time we are looking for authentic food and our new polish friends! Overall score: A-

The R&L Lounge is a taste of an era gone by in the historic Polonia section of Buffalo. I recently stopped by on a Monday night with my Dad and a few friends and we were warmly greeted by Ronnie and Lottie. This place is now celebrating its 50th(!) year in business, going back all the way to 1969. We started out with Tyskies at the bar and admired the old photos and memories from Dyngus Days past. Lottie then showed us how the pierogis are each hand made in the back. We all opted for the platter, which includes two pierogi, two golombki, and rye bread with butter. The pierogis were fried nicely and the golombki had a nice flavor to them with the sauce. Lottie chatted us up for quite some time at the bar and told us many stories of her years in business here. She also gave advice to myself and a friend "If you're young, and you work hard, you can accomplish anything". Ronnie and Lottie are evidence of that with a business running 50 years strong. A note that Fish Fry's are available only Friday from noon - 7. I will be back to try one soon!

I'm always a fan of different local places. You have to understand they have a small menu and is a hole in the wall. But a great place to go to. We had the the polish platter which had golabki with two pierogi of your choice. The pierogi weren't like another pierogi I have tasted. They were homemade and extremely good. The couple that own it were there and have owed the place for over 40 years and were extremely sweet. The atmosphere is the history of the place, which was great to hear all the stories from the owners. This hidden treasure is a must, if you like polish food you should go try.

I sat at the bar and the bartender did everything from serving drinks, prepping food, cleaning up, taking out the trash. You should tip him even though tip jar isn't even there and nothing was required. Alcoholic drinks were unlimited. I remember many lounges that I went to had limited amount of 2 drinks or so. This lounge doesn't have it. The food is not too high of quality. You get some pasta, salad, some desserts, soup of the day, tea, coffee, soft drinks, and infused water. Overall I had an okay experience. Not over the top but I have nothing to complain.

I've visited here a few times and each time, I've left happy. You check in with the friendly desk clerk to get access. There's plenty of intimate seating that's great for solo and couple travelers. The lounge has large picture windows that look out over the terminal, so you can have a great view of the airplanes taking off and landing. There are plenty of charging ports and wifi stations, and the seating is very comfortable and clean. The private restrooms are a plus, too. Food-wise, you'll find a small self-serve buffet of various hot items, snacks, and sweets. I really like their mini brownies so if they have a pan of those out, get one! Sometimes I've seen chicken fingers, spinach dip, meatballs, and soup, and there's always a bowl of salty pretzels and tasty candies available. Healthy snacks (like hummus with pita and vegetables, light and bright pasta salad, fresh fruit, and cheese cubes) are available as well. The menu changes often, so you never know what you're going to get. Sodas, bottled water, and booze are free and included. They have hot tea and a great espresso machine, too. There's a handy t.v. screen that tells you the current flight status, so you'll know when it's time to leave and go to your gate. I've never seen any sort of time limit enforced here, making the lounge a great place to hang if your plane is delayed.

Someone mentioned that it's kind of tucked away and tough to find, and I actually loved that part. I felt like I was discovering some little treasure. The interior is very old school cool, and I could have settled into those huge leather couches all night. (Except they close at 9pm on weeknights so I guess they'd kick me out.) The bartender was funny and friendly, and we lucked out that it was happy hour, buy one/get one. We didn't actually go back up for our free drinks, so when we returned our chips and cashed out, she only charged us for one drink instead. She didn't have to do that, and it was really cool that she did. Small crowd, very quiet, dark and atmospheric. Really, this is my ideal place. If I lived downtown, this would be my go to.

There was live music on a Friday night, which was nice. The music was R &B old and new school. It was slightly loud, which was not a problem for us, but if you are not a fan, maybe not go when there is live music.. We had reservations, which I would recommend seeing the space is small. When entering, it took us little time to get acknowledged and seated, but after that, the service was good. The server was very attentive and super friendly. The food is small plates. When reviewing the limited menu, I was a little shocked at the prices. I thought 32 bucks for crab stuffed salmon was pricey, but after eating it, I was not mad at all. They were also a very nice size. It was the star dish at the table. Read a lot of reviews where they were out of items from the limited menu. I have to say the same happened tonight. We arrived about 2 or so hours after opening, so that was disappointing, but I guess it just means I have to go back. Along with the hot honey stuffed salmon, we also tried the fried oysters. They were delicious. Their remoluades and hot mayo sauces were soooo good. We also ordered the crab cakes, again amazing. Just the right crab to filler ratio topped with great remoulade. Then, lastly, we ordered the sweet chili chicken eggrolls. After the other items we had, this by far was underwhelming. Maybe if we tried them first as they were nice size, filled nicely and fried to perfection, but the filling was not very flavorful. It sat on a bed of a cabbage with spicy mayo, which was very good. So, if you got a bite with that, it helped flavor it up. The drinks were very good. They also have a nice stocked bar. If a bourbon fan they had a nice selection. The only thing that kept me from giving 5 stars as we did really enjoy is that they add an 18 percent gratuity on tables of ONE or more people. I am not a fan of that. It doesn't encourage the service to be good. Although we did have great service and I added more to the tip. That was just a turn-off for me. As anywhere downtown parking can be a pain, I recommend just going into the ramp on Franklin and not even trying to find street parking. The ramp is less than a 2 minute walk.

The place was nicely decorated for the holidays. We got here early to watch the sunset over some drinks. Our drinks from the bar were festive and nicely made. We were seated for dinner at a nicely set table. Our waiter, hostess, bartender, and other staff were pleasant and gave us wonderful recommendations and information about the selections. The Christmas menu gave us a lot of options to choose from. We opted for the shareable bread (wow--this bread is unique and delicious) and a burrata appetizer (quite a bit scarce on the veggies--this is definitely NOT a salad). We ordered a unique salmon dinner cooked in paper with some veggies underneath (also unique, but not a ton of veggies), and I got the lobster tagliatelle--it was delicious, but I wish it was a larger portion. Props to Jimmy, our waiter - Super pleasant with great recommendations. Pros: The view! The ambiance is lovely. Some interesting menu selections. Cons: The ripped bar seats - all of them need to be replaced. Besides the shareable bread, the portions were quite small, and the wine was severely overpriced (our $48 bottle is normally $14).
