I've tried a handful of places in the area, and this one just hits differently. The flavors felt balanced, and it had that comforting, homemade taste. The Hủ Tiếu Áp Chảo was crispy and generously loaded with veggies and protein. I liked that they didn't skimp -- it actually felt filling compared to some other spots nearby. Buried deep on the Vietnamese side of Bellaire Asiatown, the allure of Que Huong Bistro starts with the starts with the mom and pop vibes. The non-pretentious service, group friendly seating, and outstanding execution of Viet dishes (particularly northern ones) have made them one of my favorite underrated spots in the area. With limited parking out front, the place is smaller than it looks. There is no five star service here, but usually a woman with young children running around with limited service. The tables are large enough to accommodate groups of all sizes, with a karaoke machine and TVs in the background. Bathrooms are a little sus at best, but may be best avoided entirely. Food wise, there are some items that really stand out. Their cha ca (#1) is legit, with a ton of flavor and a nice portion. I think their ca kho is also tasty, albeit a bit on the sweet side. Some folks really consider bac (#2) dish standard to be the bun cha ha noi, which is solid but not stellar. I have enjoyed the pho, but would only consider this a 3rd option at best. I would prefer their my quang, a central Viet dish, over most of the other noodle dishes out there. Another dish that is underrated is their com tam. Most specialty places will do a better job but their version of a broken rice plate is hearty and delicious. The crab patty + pork skin shreds goes extremely well with their semi-pungent fish sauce. Even their bun thit nuong is strangely addicting and I appreciate how hearty their portions are with most of their dishes. The pricing is on point, the service is friendly, and the food is bangin'. Was in Houston, looking for Vietnamese food and came across this hole in the wall. When walking in we were greeted and were told we could sit anywhere. It wasn't too busy. We were the only two people eating at the time (me and my sister). The woman who served us was really nice and attentive. Very family friendly environment To drink, I got a lemonade. It was really good, but I did not know it was a salted lemonade, not my cup of tea, but it was fresh and tasty but salty is not what I go for in a lemonade. For our appetizer, we got fried squid and spring rolls. The fried squid was really good. You could say it tasted like fresh calamari. The batter was really crispy and it was seasoned just right, a salt and pepper seasoning and it came with a light amount of bell peppers/jalapeño peppers and onions. The spring rolls were not my favorite. They had both chicken and shrimp in the roll, I prefer just shrimp. I didn't know they came with both in one roll, I should've looked at the menu's description. (Side note If you order more than $30 worth of food, they give you a complementary egg-rolls. The eggrolls were good. They seem to be filled with two to three different types of meat and veggies, they were tasty and fresh.) For our entrées, my sister got the pho (I don't remember which one) and I got the #16. I thought the number 16 was a grilled pork vermicelli, but I was mistaken. When my plate came out, I was a bit confused, my vermicelli seemed to be deconstructed. The vermicelli came separate, protein came separate and the vegetables came separate. When I saw the protein, I was a bit intimidated because like I said, I thought I was getting a grilled pork vermicelli. There were pork patties, along with grilled pork in this broth that has peanuts and crispy onions. Nothing like what I'm accustomed to eating. I was pleasantly surprised, the patties had unique flavor to it. Nothing like I've tried before, but it was a very fresh tasty patty, and the grilled pork in the broth was delicious as well. That broth was so flavorful, the peanuts, and the crispy onions were a nice touch. Definitely like no other vermicelli I've had in my life, I'm glad I had the opportunity to taste it. If I saw a picture of this, I would have never gotten it. I'm glad I still tried it even though I was intimidated. I overall enjoyed my experience here. This place is what I would consider a hidden gem/hole in the wall. It looks like a family run restaurant. Small parking lot but free parking. It has a diner vibe. When you spend $30+, you get free eggrolls. The eggrolls don't come with anything - no fish sauce, no lettuce or other garnishments. We asked for fish sauce and they did bring some. The eggrolls were delicious. The Bun Bo Hue was also very flavorful with plenty of meat. The rau muong xao toi was so good. The ca kho and thit kho to was great but having the fish mixed in with the pork was difficult to eat. The pork was slicked really thin. The service was great and very attentive. We have been going to Que Huong Bistro for years and we used to go Le Viet in the energy corridor. Our kids grew up eating at Le Viet and later at Que Huong Bistro. It is their favorite restaurant to eat at when they come to visit and they say it is better than the vietnamese restaurants where they now live. The food is always great and we especially enjoy the bun, pho, spring rolls, egg rolls and tofu dishes with lemongrass and mixed vegetables. Take out is as good as eating in but we enjoy the restaurant. Others have pointed out the friendly and welcoming atmosphere. We also enjoy the children playing while we eat. In our neighborhood there are several vietnamese restaurants that are closer to our home but none of them hold a candle to Que Huong Bistro. It is worth the drive. read more

The veggies was good, this is my favorite veggie to get at Vietnamese restaurants. I think the sauce had some shrimp/seafood flavor so definitely ask if you have allergies. We went during the weekday around 4:30 and were the only ones there. Waiters was really nice and checked up on us once in awhile, but then we had to call them for water refills often. We came a couple minutes after closing hours but as there was still diners inside we were allowed to place our to go order. Lots of locals inside so that was a very good sign. Decor was utilitarian. We noticed that almost all of the refrigerated cases lining the back wall were filled with drinks or food prepped for the next day. They pulled the lettuce, basil, mint and bean sprouts out and packaged them while we watched. It was a little odd to see her eat a snack and handle our food at the same time. In a short while we got our order and headed back to the hotel. Food was still hot and luckily there was a large bowl in the hotel that we used for the pho. The pho was filled with tripe, brisket, flank, tendon and lots of noodles. We added a freshly cracked egg along with the fresh veggies. Broth was rich and satisfying which made this an excellent pho. The bun cha Han Noi contained a generous serving of grilled pork and ground pork balls. The sweet fish sauce was a great dipping sauce that complemented the lettuce wrapped pork, pickled veggies and rice noodles. Overall this was a filling meal for a great price. read more

Haven't been to Houston in years and picked up some takeout as this place was close by and open. Food was ready quickly and well packed. I got the Bun Cha Hanoi and grilled pork spring rolls. Both were phenomenally flavorful. There was so much going on just in the dipping sauce and fish sauce. The food here is amazing and it's cheap!! I literally used to live 1 minute away and drive by this place daily and somehow never noticed it. It's in a tiny, busy shopping strip so it's easy to get distracted by all the other signs. I got a rice plate with allows you 3 toppings so I chose lemongrass beef, a fried egg, and an egg roll. Normally, I don't eat very much but I nearly finished my entire plate which only cost me about $10. The staff in this place were also so nice and attentive. We decided to come to Que Huong Bistro for lunch on our last day in Houston. We had a party of 7 and was seated promptly at a big table. They have a huge variety of items on their menu! I decided to get their Ca Catfish Kho To, which was bone-in catfish simmered in clay pot with traditional "nuoc mam" sauce, bit of hot chili and pepper. This took a bit longer to come out to the table compared to the rice plates. This also comes with white rice. It was pretty delicious! And it went so well with the rice too! It was a bit sweet and savory. The catfish was melt in your mouth too! There are some bones so be careful. Definitely a dish you would want to try. We also got their Cha Gio, which is the Vietnamese eggrolls. These were really well done and delicious. They were much bigger than the ones that other places normally serve. I would also recommend this! My husband got their Com Tam, which is the rice plate. What's great is that you can choose the meats you want. He got the grilled sliced pork, grilled slice chicken, and Chinese sausage. My friend got their #19 - Com Tam Que Huong, which is their rice plate with shredded pork, grilled pork chop, egg cake, sunny side egg, and tofu skin stuffed shrimp. The rice plates are also really delicious! The meats were cooked very well and the marinade isn't insanely sweet like some of the places back home. Prices are super decent as well compared to West Coast pricing. Wouldn't mind coming back when we're visiting Houston again. read more

I got a chance to speak with the owner & they confirmed that this is a Ma & Pa owned restaurant; no wonder the food taste so authentic. Here's what I usually order when I come here. - Ca Kho To (Fish on the clay pot)- caramelized in fish sauce, hot chili & pepper. The fish is cooked to perfection and the inside is still glistening, you also get a balance of sweet & savory. 4.9/5 - Canh Chua (Mekong Soup)- I remembered when I was a kid my mom use to always make this for me. The soup comes with fish & veggies, I always ask to add in some shrimp as well ($2 extra for shrimp). I love that the soup isn't too sour because it'll be inedible. So on a cold day this is the soup that will warm you up. 4.5/5 - Suon Rim man (Pork Ribs shimmered in traditional fish sauce & onions)- taste pretty much like the fish on the clay pot but it's pork inside. As I stated above, perfect balance in sweet and savory. Parking in the front and some parking in the back but the parking lot is rarely full. Mi Quang is good but more on the fishy side. Thit nuong vermicelli is served like in Vietnam but with bigger portions. Nem nuong spring rolls are delicious. Water is questionable. I love how much they give you, making the prices reasonable and cheap compare to other restaurants off of Bellaire Blvd (or Chinatown Houston). Service is just like any typical Mom's & Pop's Asian restaurants - expect them to never be there. The interior can use a little upgrade but for being a Mom's & Pop's (who randomly scream at one another), it's alright. If you don't finish your food, just set it aside. My dad found this place and I was skeptical since it was so far from the main bellaire strip. Totally worth the extra ten minutes!! This is a family run restaurant. The owner previously had other restaurants but decided to downsize since he's older. He was originally from South Vietnam (matters for flavor profile!). Prices are getting too high here. The staff do not give receipts, so you have no idea what the fees charged are. I don't like the automatic gratuity charged for 5 or more people. That is so ridiculous. Most restaurants don't charge until 6 or more people. We also don't know how much the restaurant charged us for tip because we did not get a printout of prices. Very shady. When I first moved to Houston about 30 years ago, the shopping strip at Wilcrest and Beechnut hosted two Vietnamese cuisine pioneers of the city, Kim Son and Que Huong. I become a regular at Que Huong since they opened in 1995, because as a poor student their Com Tam Combo Platter could easily provide a full and satisfying meal for just a few dollars. At one time, my wife's family went there almost weekly for a gathering, sitting at the big round table on a raised platform at the back of the restaurant that might have doubled as a performance stage. Our visit becomes less frequent when they relocated to Hong Kong City Mall, but we have never stopped going until they closed their business. A few years ago, Que Huong rose from the ashes at a smaller spot and become today's Que Huong Bistro. We like to go there for a fix of Com Tam and Banh Xeo. I saw a friend, Lex Nguyen, posted a mouth-watering spread from his family dinner recently, featuring one of my most favorite Vietnamese dishes of all time, which prompted us to visit this evening. We ordered Goi Cuon for an appetizer. Although it's already premade and served cold, my adoration for the restaurant easily gets them a pass. The Hoisin Peanut sauce, which is a crucial dipping sauce for this popular Spring Roll reconciled this minor infraction. The plat de resistance is my beloved Ca Kho To, or as I call it, Crack In A Pot. Pieces of bone-in Catfish steaks marinated in Fish Sauce, Garlic, and Shallots, first caramelized in the pot, then slowly braised in Coconut Water and its own marinade, resulting in a sticky sweet and savory sauce that makes me wolfed down bowls of Steamed White Rice like it's out of style. But wait, there's more... the Catfish Steaks are topped with tiny pieces of rendered Pork Fats, they are like tiny umami flavor bombs that pleasure my mouth. Since it's a chilly evening, we got the Canh Chua with Shrimp instead. The Sweet and Sour Vietnamese Soup truly pairs perfectly with the Caramelized Braised Catfish. The soup contains an ample amount of veggies like Bean Sprouts, Okras, Pineapples, Tomatoes, Taro Stems, topped with a variety of aromatic chopped Herbs. With dishes like this, there's no chance that I don't overeat. Even with my stomach happily filled, there are enough left over for a lighter meal, all these for an exceptional value. The lady who served us was so nice that she made special accommodations to our order as we asked for less Chili for the Ca Kho To and less Sweetness for the Canh Cua. The name Que Huong always has a special place in my heart. Before we left, I made sure to greet and thank the owner, the same kind-looking uncle, for serving excellent traditional Vietnamese comfort food for the past 27 years that I've been a satisfied customer. read more
