Chicken arepa and plantain chips
Denise M.

This is the only Venezuelan place I've ever tried. I'm surprised how different it was from Mexican food, although--duh-- that makes perfect sense since they're two completely different countries. This place isn't fancy, but it's nice enough. There is a really cool mural on one wall and on another The words Venezuela are spelled out in red, Blue, and yellow. There's a bar with bar stools and from the looks of it it's a pretty full bar. I didn't see a cocktail menu or drink menu, so I assume they'll make what you ask. Our server was very nice and you can tell he aimed to please. They serve arepas, which are kind of like a cross between a thick tortilla and a steamed bun. They're pretty heavy, but delicious. We all got the chicken arepa which has shredded chicken cooked with seasoning and perhaps peppers? They had mashed avocado on the arepa. It was served with fried plantains. It was all delicious! We've been here several times and each time I have loved it. I've had fried plantains at other places, but honestly I like these ones the best.

I only got to order takeout since we were out for Noon Year, but I am glad we got to wait around at the establishment. Everyone was super friendly and were giving out Prosecco for Noon Years! I got the plato pabellon and was filled with lots of meat! They sure don't skimp on the portions her. The meat was well seasoned and juicy, and the beans, plantains, and rice were also delicious. The arepa (their corn bread) was also well made. Can't wait to come back to try other dishes.

Stopped here to try the arepas and it did not disappoint. They are super filling and loaded. The staff was also super sweet and the atmosphere was so lively

Que Chevere is fantastic!! It's quite small so you may want to consider going outside of busy lunch hours. When we walked in we were quickly greeted and given an overview of the menu as it was our first time. We had never tried Venezuelan food, but had Que Chevere recommended multiple times. I ordered a spicy margarita and my husband had an old fashioned. My husband said his drink was okay, but my margarita was super delightful! I asked for it to be spicer my second round and it was perfect. For our meal I had the arepa pabellon and it was mind blowing with the amount of flavors I experienced! The corn pancake mixed with the seasoned shredded beef, black beans, cheese, and the cilantro creama was so good! Plus the fried plantain chips on the side were different but seriously yummy! My husband ordered the Que Chevere Pepito and said it was okay. There was a lot of ketchup and mayo on the top which overpowered any other flavors. He did say that the steak was cooked perfectly and he enjoyed the pieces of bacon as well. Overall we will definitely visit again when we're in Mesa!

Delish!! Great friendly and attentive service. Quick and hot food. We loved it. It's a small place with casual seating. Parking is around the corner in public lots.

Came here after having a couple of beers at the brewery just a few buildings down. This place is amazing! A TRUE gem. The place is very welcoming and the staff are super friendly and very helpful when there is a need to get a better handle of the menu. This is traditional Venezuelan food, and it is absolutely delicious - and very well presented! We ordered several items and the empanadas were honestly my faves... but it was all really good. The place is not huge but a decent size, and thankfully not full of wall TVs which I think often detract from the ambience. There was only one TV and it was off! We had a couple of drinks including some of their higher end tequilas and I have to say it was a great evening all round. The food was incredible. With the increase in quality dining and beverage locations in DT Mesa, there are some great choices. This is definitely in the top of my list in Mesa!

Some of the best food I've ever eaten! I do not eat Venezuelan food at all. It is amazing! Every plate was cleaned!

If you haven't been to Qué Chevere in downtown Mesa yet, I'm going to kindly suggest you stop what you're doing and GO. We ordered the sampler plate - it was a whole fiesta on a platter. The tequeños? Golden, crispy cheese sticks of joy. The beef empanadas? A spiritual experience. The chicken empanadas are solid, but the beef deserves its own fan club. We shared everything family-style with our "taste-buddies" (aka two teen guys and tween girlie), and the portions were generous. Even with three human vacuums at the table, we had leftovers. Bless. The arepa pabellón brought it all home; fluffy, flavorful, and deeply satisfying. Shout-out to the staff: kind, helpful, and genuinely happy to walk you through the menu like the arepa angels they are. The vibe is casual, welcoming, and full of heart -exactly what you want from a spot serving Venezuelan comfort food this good. Great value, even better vibes. Will definitely be back- next time we're bringing reinforcements.

Friendly service, good came out quick. Tons of meat in the shredded beef arepa, plantain chips were super crispy and the green sauce drenched over the arepa added a nice spicy touch. The beef was seasoned well and the arepa itself was hearty. It was pretty quiet when I popped in around 11:50am for lunch.

The food was delicious. The staff was helpful in explaining the unique dishes. Overall a great experience.

Came for dinner & ordered the Arepa Pabellón plate. It's exactly what I was expecting. Flavorful, delicious, and filling. Staff is friendly & attentive. Restaurant has great vibes along with good music. (Music was not too loud which is great) You can hear conversations without having to yell. I'm not a drinker but the bar is stalked up with alcohol. The table next to me ordered drinks & they were so pretty. If I drank I would have definitely ordered one. The table was pleased with their drinks as they were sipping on them. Orvid the owner took the time to stop by & say hi. Really nice guy & I would definitely come back again to support this local Venezuelan restaurant. You won't be disappointed with the Arepa Pabellón!!!!

Lots of Venezuela decor.

I kept hearing about this place and I'm so glad I finally went in to give it a try. Omg this food is so good! The arepas are to die for. The meat inside of them is so flavorful and that green sauce!! *drool* The drinks are also fabulous and great service. There's a good amount of seating inside and a nice dog-friendly patio in the front too. My first experience with Venezuelan food did not disappoint! I'm definitely going to come back to try the brunch options.

I must have had a brain fart or something because right after I walked in, the worker greeted us and immediately told us they had empanadas. He said they had chicken, beef, and cheese empanadas. I immediately ordered three chicken and three beef. I forgot about the arepas. The guy said it would be ten minutes. So we browsed their store. As soon as you walk in to the business, the small place looked like it is set up to ship packages. It has a small grocery store in the back, and has a kitchen on the side. The whole store was small, but clean. There was no seating in this place as it is not a sit down restaurant. Food orders are placed to go. Almost ten minutes exactly our empanadas came out. We took them to our car and ate there. We wanted to eat them fresh and hot and boy were they steaming hot. I loved the crispness of the shells. The filling was very flavorful and moist. I dipped them in the salsa and they had had a nice kick. They were delicious! We were able to polish off four. After we arrived home some thirty minutes later, the empanadas were still warm and surprisingly still crispy! I ate the last two. I will definitely return to try their arepas!

We both love Latin and Asian cuisine so the menu seemed to fit our palate Was seated pretty quick and they handed my gf a rose. Got me extra brownie points for sure (told her I arranged that jokingly lol) The vibe is awesome a dimly lit jungle vibe for the Peruvian inspiration. Good music not too loud like other "high end" spots in Scottsdale that try to do too much. They also had a fire performer in the middle of our dinner which added to the ambiance. We sat inside but the outdoor seating also looked nice. During the day this place would have great views of the golf course I imagine. Onto the food, oysters were great quality, fresh but still briny. Had a pineapple mignonette that complimented well. My gf doesn't like oysters but these were small enough for her to enjoy with the added sweetness. Calamari was also solid, had a great chipotle aioli and ginger scallion oyster sauce on the side. The salmon ceviche was a bit of a let down. More like a crudo if you ask me, but still great flavors. Cocktails were great too! The corn mezcal was super unique. Not the biggest mezcal person but it sounded too good to pass up and definitely glad I tried it. My gf got the pisco sour and it was perfectly tart but refreshing. For mains we got the Lomo Saltado and Salmon. Both were great, Lomo Saltado was super tender and had great flavors. Same with salmon, nothing too unique but still on point Overall all the food was very well seasoned and flavorful. Nothing lacked. Cocktails were good. Service was a bit slow but our waiter (forget his name) was very professional and fun. Gave a ton of recs and was very animated. Worked there for 4+ years if I remember correctly and it showed. That being said, service was very slow and the food was lackluster. I had the recommended pork and scallops, my wife decided on the lobster fried rice. The lobster fried rice was better, but small portions and a very small lobster serving made us wonder how this dish cost $49. We hoped me might finish with a dessert to pick up the mood after a lackluster meal. The salted carmel brownie we decided on wasn't great; tasteless and bland, it just wasn't worth it. All in all, for a two person, $300 meal, there are much better options. Would not repeat and certainly would not recommend.

I found a spot in the surface lot right across the street from one of the most popular Mexican restaurants in town. Ambiance (4/5): The Mission is a nice restaurant. There's a small patio in front and a large patio out back. Sit at the outdoor patio if you can pull it off. Inside is great too, and there's nice artwork both inside and outside. The only issue? It's a popular restaurant and they try to pack in as many people as possible so space is at a premium. That also means that if you come at a peak hour, like we did, it's going to be pretty loud. Service (4/5): There was a wait when we arrived and the bar was full (first come, first served). Luckily, a group was leaving right when I lingered by the bar and we were able to snag the seats. The bartender did a pretty good job taking care of us. There was room for improvement as far as her efficiency and checking in, but overall, given how busy the restaurant was, pretty good. Drinks (4.5/5): The Mission has an interesting cocktail list. As you'd expect, it's tequila-focused but there's a good variety. You'll find creative cocktails which is always big in my book. Plus margaritas like prickly pear margaritas. I went with the correndo na chuva which has cachaca, passion fruit, lemongrass, sherry, and lime juice. Cachaca is a Brazilian liqueur which you don't see in many places so this was a treat. It was a refreshing cocktail. Lots of spicy cocktails are available, too. Food (4/5): While the brunch menu is pretty extensive, I think there's a clear winner: the all-you can eat whole roasted pig out. For $19, and only on Saturdays and Sundays during brunch, it's a steal of a deal. You get pineapple roasted shoulder and pork belly carnitas tacos served with your choice of one of five sauces. There's a little buffet stand where a member of their staff will make the tacos for you. I had about 10 of them and they hit the spot! Nice variety of sauces so I tried all of them except for one (two spicy for my blood) and you can request flour tortillas if you prefer that over the corn tortillas they have. Between the two proteins, I thought the pork shoulder was more flavorful and tender. It's no surprise that The Mission Old Town has some of the most Yelp reviews in town. It's a popular restaurant. Just make sure to make a reservation or stop by outside of peak hours or there's a good chance you'll have a wait.
