I'm predicting by 2025 Taco Tuesday will be replaced with Pupusa Tuesday. Pupusas are like tacos on steroids and you go to the right pupseria, you're in for a treat. Salvadoreno has one of the best Pupusas in PHX .They are bigger than the delicious silver dollar-like pupusas found in ES but not as good. I really like the overflow of cheese carmelizing and oozing from the pupusa. Unfortunately the 2 I ordered were too clean cut and pretty. I ordered one cheese and one lorroco. This is good place to get some really tasty comida salvadoreña. The place is very simple and unpretentious, and ordering is simple: get the menu from the counter, place your order, choose a table and they bring your food to you. I ordered the lengua de res with a side of pupusa de frijol con calabaza. It was a very tasty and satisfying meal; the braised tongue was tender and very nicely seasoned, and the proposal was just bursting with flavor. Great food, good prices, fast service. read more

I passed by a sign that said Pupusas and thought to myself, "Wow, I haven't had pupusas since freshman year of college!" So, I excitedly went in for lunch. I was greeted by a young lady, and I'm sad I didn't get her name. She was so kind & sweet as she explained to menu to me, and recommended some popular drinks people like. I ordered the 3 combo pupusas plate, which came with 3 pupusas (I picked pork and cheese, very cheesy!!!) and 2 sides ( I picked plantains and black beans). It's been a really long time since I've had plantains too, and idkw I love Tostones! And, for my drink, I ordered a Jamaica aka Sorrel aka Hibiscus Tea. I really enjoyed my meal! It just made me feel happy. It took me back to when my Salvadoran friend and I would ditch class to go get some lol But, aside from the good memories attached to this meal, the pupusas were well made, and they were big! I haven't had any that big before! So, that was nice. And the pickled veggies and sauce were delicious toppings. This is one of my husband's favorite places for pupusas. Preface to my review. They keep it pretty cold in the restaurant year round so take a sweater if you get easily cold. This go round I got a pupusa and a tamale. The waitress brought our food and then we waited about 10 minutes to get the curtido and salsa. The tamal was a little salty, but the pupusa was perfect. Their horchata is a bit strong for my taste. Maybe I'm just not used to Salvadoran horchata... but it was good. Just a bit too sweet for me. Also as a side note, please don't be inpatient, pupusas are made fresh there so you will wait a bit to get served if you order any of them. read more

Having never had Salvadoran food, this place piqued my interest and I'm glad I had a chance to try a good variety. I ordered the grilled tilapia fillet that comes with rice and beans, some lettuce/tomato (not shown) and pico de gallo. I also ordered a steak pupusa (left). I definitely liked the large piece of fish which was seasoned well, and really enjoyed the rice (wish it came with a little more rice!). I will say I'm not a *huge* fan of pupusas themselves.. They're a little thick for my taste. But the generous cheese and steak inside was good. If you like pupusas, I'm sure you will like there's. I do think that the tilapia meal would be better served with some kind of sour cream. I was glad I had some on hand at home. So maybe order some extra if you go. The service here was very nice. The woman up front was in a wonderful mood and was very helpful when I didn't know what to order. The ambiance of the place is very casual. Ordered the vegan combo plate with their vegan pollo and chipilin tamales and pastelito carne, and I was given real chicken and dairy cheese and the pastelito was overcooked to the point where it was HARD as a rock. I wish I could say that this was just an isolated incident, but this is now 2 for 2 where I've been given non-vegan items and whatever vegan sides there were were just bad. The side of beans also had a layer of oil that pretty much made it inedible unless you want to be on the toilet in an hour evacuating your bowels. There was nothing that could be salvaged. Whether you're vegan or not, just stay away from this place because not only are they incapable of getting your order correct, their quality control is just terrible. I feel the need to point out my credibility as a reviewer so let's start by saying I'm Salvadorian (born and raised). I think these are good pupusas, they satisfy the craving and home sickness but I don't think they're the best in the Valley. They are bigger than average for sure. Horchata is good. Empanadas are good but again not the best. Platanos were delicious and the rice definitely took me back home. I have never eaten at the restaurant and always get takeout but I haven't had any issues with customer service. I think it's pretty convenient that they have multiple locations and their hours are better than my number 1 spot for pupusas so I will keep coming. read more

I love pupusas! And I was happy to recently learn that Salvadoreno has vegan pupusas! In general, I love Latin American food (which we don't have enough of in Phoenix, IMHO) but it's hard to find clearly marked vegan options sometimes. The only other LatAm restaurant I know of that offers clearly marked vegan options is Republica Empanada in Mesa - which is a day trip for us! Salvadoreno #3 is just a few miles away! We ordered a three pupusa platter with rice and beans. We got one of each vegan pupusa option - which were beans with spinach, beans with squash and beans with loroco (a flower vine). The beans were black beans and were fairly dense. The spinach and loroco pupusas were my favorites. The squash was a little too liquid. The best part were the pupusas themselves - very fresh, crisp on the outside and well cooked inside. I'd probably like a plain one with nothing inside or just beans too. I really liked the beans and rice as well. The rice had bits of veggies, and the beans were more pureed than what was in the pupusas. We also ordered the plantain stuffed with beans. I think it was a dessert item, because it was sprinkled with sugar. It was tasty but very heavy. I probably would order just the plantain with beans and cream (minus the cream) next time, rather than the stuffed plantain. Service was excellent! We went on a Saturday mid-afternoon, and they were pretty crowded. We figured it would be a long wait, but we were served quickly and everything tasted freshly made. They also have a freezer case of pupusas to take to-go, which I will probably be taking advantage of in the future! read more

I'd been to another location of this restaurant probably 6 years ago, but this was my first time at this spot. I ordered two pupusas to go that I hadn't tried before. I got potato and cheese and squash and black beans. I also got the cream on the side to dip them in. The potato and cheese was my favorite of the two! It took a really long time for them to prepare my food, it was around 50 minutes even though I had pre-ordered online. I think because they didn't actually see my order in their system until I came to pick it up. But it was so good! I think next time I'll just call it in so I know for sure they got the order. Two friends and I stopped in for a meal this past week and .. just blah. Everything was bland. Nothing had any flavor, and the food seemed like it was old, having been re-heated over and over. We were the only customers even though we were in there for around 90 minutes. The service was terrible. We had to stand at the little counter and wave down the lady in the back, who looked at us like a deer in headlights. She motioned to a coworker that we were there, and then the coworker came out. Any time during the meal that we needed something (some salsa, more napkins, some salt, a to-go box for the dogs, a knife), we had to stand at the little counter until someone back in the kitchen finally looked up, noticed us and let someone know we were there waiting. What was particularly perturbing was the giant lady with the long black hair who works there was in the corner of the dining room eating and playing on her phone, but looking directly at us every time we went to the little counter (no doubt to make sure we didn't steal anytihng), couldn't get up and help us, instead eating and eating and eating for the entire 90 minutes we were there. (To be clear, I don't begrudge any employee their break or what they do on their break but she didn't do any work at all the whole time we were there, and you'd think she could hop up and get us some more napkins, but no.) The worst, though, was all three meals came out at different times. So meal #1 sat there in front of us all for ten minutes going cold, then here comes meal #2, sitting there for another seven minutes, then here comes meal #3. By the time we all started eating, meals 1 and 2 were stone-cold. What kind of restaurant can't manage three very simple meals, where everything tastes the same, and there is zero technique involved? The drinks are $4/each and taste like sugar and ice, with no refills, and the meal was very bland, tasting of nothing, not even just salt and pepper. Definitely nothing like the El Salvadorean meals I have had at friends' houses or like the many wonderful El Salvadorean restaurants I've visited when I lived in Los Angeles. My husband and I have never had Salvadoran food and decided to try the restaurant because it is so close to home. On first entering, we were warmly greeted and asked if we would like some time to read the menu (she may have overheard us talk about how we know nothing about the food lol). We sat at the tables to do so (there were a few tables that still had chairs stacked on them so that seemed odd). We appreciated that the menu had the English translation next to everything so we didn't have to work out what things were for ourselves. When we were ready to order, she was very helpful and encouraged us to make sure we try certain things together to get the full experience. And she was right! We tried the chicken, carne asada and mixed pupusas with the curtido and crema and had beans, mixed beans and rice, and plantains as our sides with the combos we ordered. There was a lot of food and we had a lot to take home so we will order more thoughtfully next time. Everything was delicious! We don't have anything to compare it to, but we loved everything we ordered and will definitely be back. I wish Yelp would let us use 1/2 stars because I would have given them 4 1/2 stars overall if I could. The reason is that the prices seemed very high for lunch time though that could also be that we just didn't order smartly. But the food was definitely 5 star quality in my book. read more

As it was around lunchtime, I decided to give this place a shot. As soon as I walked in, I was warmly greeted by the waitress and invited to sit at any table. After studying the menu for a few minutes, I decided to order Churrasco Salvadoreño because I love plantains. The food was flavorful and fresh. If you enjoy plantains and black beans I highly recommend this dish. My wife and her lady friends wanted to try out one of my hole in the wall Mom and Pop restaurants. They know I'm not a big fan of big franchise chains. This place was a perfect choice and really hit the spot. This is a nice family run restaurant with a few different locations around the valley. Each one is decorated with colorful fun paintings and other cultural items to make you feel like you might be visiting El Salvador. Started off with an order of Tamales. We decided to try one of each. They were wrapped in Banana leaves and very moist inside. The dough was fluffy and a bit different than the typical Mexican tamale that we were used to eating. We all agreed that they were good and tasty but maybe not our most favorite item on the menu. Ordered a couple different combo plates of their famous Pupusas that we all could share. Carne Asada and Cheese, Pork and Cheese, Mushroom and Cheese and one with Spinach and Cheese. They serve them with their top secret Cabbage mixture and a delicious Tomato based Salsa. Everyone was surprised how good they were and how easily you could get filled up rather quickly. They were even better tasting with the Cabbage and Salsa added to the tops of them before eating. The Mushroom Pupusa seemed to be the all time winner amongst the ones we tried with the Carne Asada coming in on a close second. Also ordered the Pollo Encebollado (Onion Chicken) for myself since this looked like something we could replicate at home. It was really good and had some very nice flavors as well. I even let the ladies try a little sample of my dish so that they could check it for themselves. LOL! Service was very friendly and helpful and made sure to educate us about the menu selections and how they were prepared. It was fun watching the regular locals getting together and having some quality time while eating. There is a lot of happiness going on here. This is not a fast food joint with people running around in circles. Plan on taking some time to kick back and enjoy your family and friends and you will not be disappointed. I was on a business trip in Phoenix and happened to be craving pupusas. Coincidentally, there was one down the road from the office. I needed a break from what I was doing, so I took a quick drive to Salvadoreno Restaurant. When I arrived, there was plenty of parking and the restaurant itself wasn't even half-filled at around 1:30pm on a Saturday. You can hear slapping noises from the kitchen....sounds of the pupusas being made. I already knew I was going to order the 2 pupusa combo. So, I got mine with queso (cheese) and chicharron (pork), along with crema, queso freso and extra side of frijoles. The order also comes with curtido (relish) and salsa. The food was good and on par to what my past pupusas exeperience was. So stuffed and happy, after eating my combo plate. My one complaint would be that the service was slow. It took 15 minutes for someone to take my order and another 20 minutes for the food to show up. Only 2 other tables were filled. So, it was kinda surprising it took that long. By the time my food showed up, the restaurant was filled. For everyone after me, the wait was longer. Despite the slow service, I'd come back the next time I'm in town and craving some pupusas. read more
