I did give a good review for Pyrenees prior to this one but, we had only eaten breakfast there. Breakfast was good but, then decided to return to try their Basque food. It was not very good, my husband got the fried chicken and it was soggy not crispy at all. Soup was Luke warm the whole meal was disappointing. Don't mind paying the expensive prices if the food was good. Felt ripped off at the end of the meal. We went at lunch time so the did not serve the meal family style which I thought was strange. Service seemed okay waitress was friendly. I do like setting in the back room away from the bar. I feel there are better Basque restaurants in Bakersfield. We were really looking forward to an authentic basque dining experience during our overnight in Bakersfield. All the other basque restaurants in town were closed on mondays so we figured we would give this one a try, in spite of some recent negative reviews. Wow, what a mistake! After dodging panhandlers and multiple people sleeping on the sidewalk, we finally made it in the restaurant. (Entering through the front door that looks like it was part of an infantry assault in a war zone). When the waitress finally came to take our order, she indicated they were out of virtually all of their traditional basque, most popular and "signature" dishes. (I wish she would have told us this when she she first gave us the menus so we wouldn't have spent 40 minutes deciding on items they were out of!) It was too late to go to another restaurant so we picked items off of the skimpy remaining menu. The waitress was obviously new and didn't know anything at all about basque food and wasn't able to answer any of our questions. While she was pleasant enough, she was not engaged in her job and clearly acted like we were a bother and she had no interest in the basque cuisine or providing us any insights into special basque food preparation techniques of entrees etc. I have no problem paying top dollar for a top quality, well prepared meal. However, this isn't what we got at this restaurant. Each meal from our party ended up being well over 50 bucks per person by the time you add in salad and/or soup or bread and/or their side-dish setup fee). These high prices were for run of the mill things like chicken, fish or a pork chop, not necessarily "basque" meals. The entrees were delivered to our table cold, the meat was overcooked and tough. One of the specials was stroganoff, at 30 bucks a plate. It had a few mushroom pieces and a couple meat pieces served over a small glob of dried up fettuccini noodles and a teaspoon of sour- not good, at any price. Overall, the meal portions were small, small, small, the soup and beans were luke warm and the soup was very skimpy, consisting of mostly broth and very few vegetables. The silverware that we got when seated had food stuck all over it. Overall, dining at the Pyrenees cafe was a negative experience and we won't be back. The weird, 80s throw-back music was way too loud, the food was way too expensive, over-hyped and not well prepared or properly presented. It clearly was not the authentic basque eating experience we had hoped for. And to top it off, our car was broken into while we were dining!! read more

Showed up on a Saturday at 845am for breakfast . We have never had there food. I was told we needed to sit on the patio because I had a dog. I said he was medical alert service, she states yes that we could sit in the patio only. It's 45 degrees outside. I stated by ADA law she was not allowed to sit me outside. She said that is there rule for dogs. If the owner is reading this please teach your employees that medical alert dogs are not pets, they are there to keep safe and alive. You are not allowed to discriminate against us by ada law. My dog is trained to go under the table while I eat. We left to go to a restaurant where we were welcomed. Pyrenees cafe on Summer St. Not recommended unless you like dog butthole on your table. I visited for a celebration of life on 1/21/24, and at approx 7:40pm, the staff (which was amazing and awesome until this point) let an incoming patron place a small breed dog on the main bar. The dog did not possess a certified Service or emotional support animal placard. Even if it did, allowing the dog to lay on the bar/service counter would be a violation. I understand the need for service aninals, but letting them rest on the bartop wher food is dispensed poses a significant health hazard. Have been visiting Bakersfield for work over the last six months and when in Rome as they say. Have tried the multiple Basque restaurants over this time. Upon walking in we found the Oxtail Stew on the menu and went for that with the Basque set up (they have Basque and American). Their set up had bread with salsa, beans, salad and soup. The soup was bountiful with vegetables and was excellent. The salad was a mix of greens and beets with a tasty vinaigrette dressing. Like the soup the salad was also delicious. The main event came which was the Ox Tail Stew. The stew was full of ox tails and potatoes. The gravy was excellent, full of great flavor. Accompanying the stew was two delicious pieces of garlic bread. The bread was full of fresh crushed garlic. Finally just for giggles we ordered spaghetti. Spaghetti noodles with a bolgenesse sauce. The waitress was super friendly and the food was out extremely fast, hot and fresh. If in Bakersfield, Basque is a must try. read more

Great menu and good service in a cool historic building. Even though the building itself now lies in a shady part of town, there is a private lot of street parking that is very close. You walk into the bar area, and the restaurant is in the room nextdoor with access to the patio. The menu is sure to have something on it for every person in your party; whether that be a vegetarian, a meat eater, or someone wanting seafood. If you're looking for lamb, this just might be your place to try. My party of 4 all shared the fresh fried pork skins, jalapeño poppers, and lamb lollipops. All of the appetizers were homemade and well cooked, the lamb came out perfectly medium rare. I had an excellent BLT and my friends had burgers that they said were very good. We've been to this place before and the food was really good. This time we went with some friends and everyone was not happy with it. The food was waaaaay overpriced for what you get and it did not taste all that well and the soup was cold and the French bread was stale. The drinks we ordered cost more from the server than if you were to order it at the bar and give the bartender a tip. You better take cash too because they are not willing to split the check between the couples at the table. Definitely will not be going back. Saw this place on Diners Drive ins and Dives known for their Garlic chicken. Coming thru Bakersfield and had to try it. SUPER COOL old place that if you weren't looking for it you wouldn't even know it was there in fact we thought we were at the wrong place because it looks like an old time bar but then in back there's a big dining room and an outdoor patio. Anyways so many GREAT choices on the menu it's hard to make up your mind. Out waiter Christopher was AWESOME!! Took us thru the whole menu with all his favorites, very patient and enthusiastic about welcoming new comers!! Out meal was wonderful and the Salsa was outstanding!! Took my daughter there a couple weeks ago. They have changed from the "Family Style Dinner". They bring out small individual size soup, bread, and all other portions. If you ask for more, they tell you it's $3.50. Even after they charged $24.50 for just the set up. My daughter asked for blue cheese crumbles on her salad and they charged $8.95. I had the cheapest steak on the menu and she had just the set up. The bill was $96. Won't be going back. read more

This was our first time to eat Bakersfield Basque. We hadn't planned on eating here, but the more well-known Basque places were closed for holidays or renovations. I'm so glad we ended up here. There were 4 in our party. We all had the dinner setup plus a main entree. Two of us had garlic chicken. One person had lamb chops. I had ribeye steak. The courses were excellent and in decent amounts. I've had basque food before where the portions were almost irresponsibly large. This setup was generous but not excessive. We especially enjoyed the soup and the pickled tongue. We were surprised to see cottage cheese come out, but it was delicious--homemade. The lamb chops were the winning entree. The garlic chicken was good. The steak was a delicious cut of meat although sadly over-cooked. (I had asked for medium. It was well done.) The fries served with the entrees were wonderful! Service was great. They were busy but already available when needed. This is an old-school place that I hope will survive and thrive for years to come. We had a great dinner & experience! read more

Went for lunch with a party of 8 people. We ordered a couple of steak and shrimp dishes, couple of sandwiches, and a couple salad/setups. The bar was crowded but the dining room wasn't busy. They appeared short staffed. After ordering, bread and beans were brought out almost immediately. Seemed like a good sign. Then we waited, for a long time...and we waited...then the waitress said they ran out of soup and we're making some more...after more waiting I excused myself from the table to use the restroom. When I came back, all of the food (soup, salad, steaks, etc.) had all been delivered. So much clutter on the table we ended up spilling a drink. I order a ribeye and grilled shrimp...I got a New York with shrimp scampi. Couldn't get the waitress to pay any attention to report the wrong order, since I wasn't at the table when it was dropped off (major serving error, that should NEVER happen. The entree reveal is the money shot at a restaurant). We didn't even get the obligatory, "How is everything?" spoken by the waitress. Total was about $350...because we were a large party they automatically tipped 20% on top of that total. Top it off, the food was average and under seasoned. Pyrenees is a well known and long appreciated restaurant in Bakersfield. A group of old friends planned to meet to celebrate a birthday recently. I was not able to join them but wanted to do something special for the birthday girl. I called the restaurant to see what could be arranged. A lovely woman answered and when I explained my wish, she told me about the amazing sounding desserts and I made my selections, put them on my card and thanked her for being so helpful and kind. When my friends arrived they were ushered to a table set with a pretty bouquet of a variety of garden roses and wished the birthday girl a special day. She took pictures as well. Of course it goes without saying that dinner was the usual excellent Basque family style food and the desserts got rave reviews. For me the best part of the experience was the kind, efficient and very thoughtful staff person who assisted me and then went the extra mile adding the beautiful roses. Now Pyrenees will forever be my favorite of the excellent Basque food restaurants in Bakersfield. read more

Have eaten there a couple times and the feel is that of a clubhouse... if your part of the gang you get all sorts of attention, if your not, "we'll get to you when we get to you." The food is meh, nothing to recommend if you're recommending basque food. The area is sketchy and I always feel I have to go check on my car half way through my meal. When I was driving there I thought "is this the right place"....am I lost again? The area seems remote, not like a place where you'd find a restaurant. But being off the beaten path, is kinda cool. There's no traffic, and parking is easy. There were enough great reviews of the place to make it worth driving around a bit.... Kind of dive-ish, retro, cool biker vibe ... There are several areas to the restaurant, including a large dining area, but I prefer eating in the front bar area where there are large leather booths. The first .. and fifth time I came here, I got the New York steak and eggs for breakfast it was great...I get it exactly the way I liked the eggs, asking them to add spinach and mushrooms to my scrambled eggs. Salsa was great in the eggs. I like when I ask for a special order, the waitress never makes a face or makes me feel like I'm being so difficult.... Today my friend got the bacon pancakes - something that I would never personally order -which he devoured! He gave me a bite.... Even without butter and syrup it was amazing! The servicers are great, they were patient with my many questions, and like I said didn't seem hesitant at all with my special order. I liked that many happy regulars seemed to be there. The place had a very nice neighborhood - albeit alotta bikers in this community - feel. Update ..... Came here after not getting into Noriega's. I really wanted oxtail, and a yelper had recommended Noriega's for oxtail. Didn't know that "family style" meant you had to go at one specific time/ seating. Oh well. Turns out, this worked out for the best... Pyrenees was beckoning from a block away. It was a sign I think. Service was as I said before, was awesome. They had oxtail stew!!! It was delicious. I decided to eat half, and take the rest home for a later treat. It had a wonderful gravy, and I wanted to eat it with some pasta or rice. Here, the oxtail came with veggies, and no rice or noodles.... that's okay! It did come with two wonderful hunk in pieces of garlic bread and a wonderful salad with A LOT of stuff in it - pepperchini (spelling), onions, blue cheese, olives, beets and romaine lettuce. It was a pleasant surprise to the usual iceberg lettuce with boring drab dressing. I wasn't ready to go home yet, so I also ordered the lamb lollipops appetizer which came with french fries. Delicious and indulgent. There is a large, well-lit dining area which would be great if you are in a large group. I saw a group of police officers sitting in there earlier. I really love, prefer the bar area. Yes, the music is loud (from Stairway to Heaven to Uptown Funk) and there are more people here .... but I like the rough, slightly boozy, dark feel of it out here, as well as sitting in the large leather circular booths. Yep. Since La Foret closed I bring friends from out of town here for Sunday breakfast because of the cool Old Bakersfield vibe and consistently delicious food. read more

Back again...another great breakfast! The bloody Mary's are delicious. The coffee was very bold and yummy. I had the eggs with Chile verde along with a biscuit. I opted for the cowboy potatoes because I'm not a huge fan of the hash browns anywhere. Dora was very attentive. She forgot to bring me potatoes instead of hash browns but willingly corrected the situation with a smile! It was an early lunch on a weekday, and the bar area was already packed! I like the ambiance which is part dark & divey. We ate in the large room to the right of the bar area where the seating is more family style. Service was great!! Got to try our friends food. That pickled tongue is addictly yummy!! For those of you too afraid to eat tongue, you are missing out!! My wife ordered the Cold Pickled Tongue sandwich. It was delicious, but we both preferred the pickled tongue not part of the sandwich. I tried the Lamb Philly with fries and onion rings. The fries and onion rings were cooked just the way I like them!! Ate half the sandwich, and took the rest home. I really hate to do this. Came here and it took them so long to prepare my salad and cold pickled tongue sandwich. Salad took over 20 minutes and the sandwich, well, I have to ask them for it. Are they busy? Yes. However, other people got their order first before me. So, it's hard to justify why my order took so long. I'm hoping that this experience doesn't happen again. Pyrenees Café is Basque food heaven! I know there are other more trendy and famous Basque places in town, but this one is mine and I love it! Pyrenees is another spot frequented by mostly old school Bakersfield folks, born and raised to appreciate places like this. By places like this, I mean places where they are glad to see you, love to feed you, and treat you like long lost family. So all the locals/family stuff aside, the food is remarkable! I have eaten lunch and dinner here and never, ever, had a bad meal. They do a semi family style dining with long tables and two or three families at the same table It's not weird, it's fun. The lunch menu is with or without full Basque meal setup, but it is so much food I pass on the setup at lunch time. Lunch favorite: Pickled Tongue Sandwich! This is a must try. I know for some folks tongue doesn't sound tasty, but neither does cow butt and you eat it all the time! LOL!!! Just try it and thank me later. They also have all sorts of other stuff on the menu. I am so into the Pickled Tongue Sammich, I forgot what else is on the menu. They also do amazing dinners! Come to dinner and get the full setup including pasta, salad, bread, salsa, tongue, Basque veggie soup, pot beans, and then whatever your entrée is. I love the Ribeye steak. They have a special one night a week on the steak so get there early and be ready to get your grub on. Pyrenees Café, you are a grand old lady of Bakersfield and I will go to my grave loving you! 11/13/21 Waiter: Cynthia W. We were a party of 3. Sat in a booth in the bar. Ordered 3 dinner set ups. We got served up to the salad portion and nothing further (no fries hot vegetables or pasta). Our server told us at least 4 times that our entrees were coming. We explained over and over we only ordered the set ups. For 45 minutes we asked her several times if we could get the rest of our set up and she kept forgetting. At one point she said the kitchen was backed up because there was a large party in the back. There were 3 booths in the bar that were there to eat, 3 tables in the dining room, one on the patio and none in the chandelier room. Next we asked if she would pack the rest up to go. That never happened. We gave up and asked for our tab. After several times of doing so, she brought the wrong tab to us twice. Finally we had to go to the bar and get the bartender to get the tab. It was still inaccurate. Our waiter, though kind in demeanor seemed impaired. Took plenty of time to chat with others, and never got us the rest of our food. The booth next canceled their entrees because the same type of situation was happening to them with the same waiter. I had my 50th birthday party at Pyrenesse this year because I love this restaurant. I feel bad for the owners, because it appears employees are taking advantage ooof the good reputation this restaurant has. This dinning experience was frustrating. read more
