Walked in on Valentine's Day and there were seats available at the bar for my husband and I. They had an amazing valentines special that we enjoyed, I went in for the setup because I was craving the soup, I swear it's the best in town. I came to try the taco Tuesday menu.I never in my life imagined going to taco Tuesday at a basque restaurant, but I'm glad I did . The menu has amazing specials. You can try a few items , leave full and happy without breaking the bank . You can tell Chalet Basque is a local favorite, the people inside sat chatting with each other at different tables creating a cozy inviting atmosphere. The staff inside were kind , courteous and fast . Wait time here is minimal. The decor is vintage, showing the history of the restaurant, city and basque culture . Curiosity brought me here , I tried steak tacos , chips and salsa , and the smash burger. The food came out promptly and was freshly made . Everything was delicious, it tasted as if it was made to order . I enjoyed everything. My favorite was the shredded beef tacos , and the smash burger . The meat was so flavorful and juicy. Well where do I start, we arrived 1st for our mom's 86 birthday party. Our group was 16 under my sister's name. When we walked in the gentleman who treated us asked if we were with a party already seated after we said we had reservations for 16. We said no we are early our reservation is at 6:00pm. He left and came back and said oh I found the reservation. He seated us and brought us drinks and water until the rest of our party arrived. Then there were not enough menus for our party. We ordered and the soup came out but there was a wait for the bread, beans and salsa. We had to ask more than once for more bread, salsa and drinks. We got the salad and tomatoes, but our tomatoes had just tomatoes and no onion or bell pepper on the plate. Then unfortunately the waiter hit the pillar and dropped several of our entrees. The busboy had already taken our plates so when the green beans and French fries came out we had nothing to eat on. We finally got our entrees and had to ask for fresh fries, there were still some green beans on the table but were cold. Since I was the only one who wanted them I didn't ask for any more. The waiter was nice enough to bring us plates, forks and a cake server for the birthday cake we brought. I just don't think they are equipped to handle large parties. For our separate check we ordered one set up and one entree of fried chicken and 2 diet cokes and with the tip our bill was over $94.00! We live in Colorado and we're in town just to celebrate our mom's birthday. We don't get basque food in Colorado we were really looking forward to this, we left very disappointed. I have to give credit to the blonde busboy who constantly came around asking if we needed anything after we sought out our waiter earlier. Its been a while since we have had the food. We didn't have reservations but they seated us for dinner. Its a nice place clean and looks nice. We looked over the menus and prices are pretty high. We decided to get just the set up. Its pretty simple and for two to eat without a beverage its about 44 dollars. You get a simple cabbage soup, French bread and butter, pot beans, salsa, lettuce in dressing tomatoes with slivered onion and green beans that looked canned. The French fries didn't appear to be too fresh kind of limp to be honest. Most basque set ups Ive had prior came with pickled tongue and cheese. If you want those items its extra charge. Just not that impressive this round. It was disappointing but we will give it one more try and see if there is improvement. I would love to try the fried chicken or other things but the prices could be a little more customer friendly, and I do understand the economy but come on. During a road trip up to NorCal with some friends, we stopped in Bakersfield for gas and I suggested we get basque food for dinner. There are many options in Bakersfield and we opted for Chalet Basque since it was open later. Chalet Basque has a fairly large dedicated parking lot, but given that it was busy Valentine's Day we got one of the last two spots. We also got lucky getting a table without a reservation. Service was absolutely phenomenal with extremely friendly servers and was the highlight of the meal for sure. The restaurant was very rustic and lots of hearts were added for Valentine's Day. The dining areas are split into multiple rooms. As for the food, the oxtail dish was a bit cold and I have had better. They also failed to notify us that they had run out of stuffed mushrooms until the very end of the meal when we inquired why they had not arrived yet. The "setup" with all of the sides were plentiful, fresh, and very tasty though. Prices were also fair for the quantity of the food given. read more

It's been a bit since we've had a chance to stop into a classic, local favorite Chalet Basque Bakersfield on Oak St. It's under new ownership and they've really brought it back! Dinner tonight was amazing I had the Roast Beef (which was fork tender) and my husband had the Beef Bourginon which was delicious and flavorful. This comes almost six months later but we would have a meal there all over again. Half way through I noticed that my omelette didn't have the sausage I expected. Our wonderful server offered to have the kitchen make a proper one but I asked whether instead I could have a sausage to take home and cook myself - we'd already had so many bites & flavors with the complete lunch. I was very pleasantly surprised by our recent visit to Chalet Basque. I hadn't been in several years after it seemed to go down hill for a long while. I'd heard there is new ownership, so decided to come in and give them another go. The service was quick and pleasant, and most of the food lived up to what we expect from Basque food in Kern County. I really enjoyed the beef bourguignon, my mother in law loved her fried chicken with garlic, and my husband said his pork chop was "okay." (I thought it tasted oddly fishy.) For Bakersfield, this place is expensive. For Bakersfield this place is Gourmet. You cannot possibly finish the meals, and we didn't try - we just got half the veal and beef Bourguignon to go and had the homemade flan. The meals come with bread, soup AND salad, and then the portions are Large. The cabbage soup came with a fancy salsa and a dish of specially flavored beans. Everything was tasty - not Gourmet, but Tasty. Basque food is considered the best in Spain and this family restaurant has passed to the 3rd generation of owners. Excellent! That one word describes Chalet Basque Restaurant. First time I have been here, but definitely not the last. I had a Lamb Sandwich with fries and a salad. What pleased me first was that the lettuce was crunchy. It had Romaine lettuce, tomatoes, onions and bell peppers. With vinegar and oil dressing, it was good. The fries were crispy, just the way I like. The star of the show was the Lamb sandwich along with brown gravy. The Lamb was so tender I did not need to chew it and could have just swallowed. However, I wanted to savor each bite so I chewed slowly. I recommend this restaurant to everyone. They also have a fully stocked bar for those who drink. Along with the tip my meal was under $20. Go and enjoy. They also use cloth napkins. Who does that anymore? Went for lunch today. Absolutely wonderful. I had the breaded veal with all the trimmings. Soup, beans, bread, and salad. Great fast friendly service and the food is so good that makes you revert back to childhood, food heaven would be a better statement. The prices are reasonable and the delicious food felt like it kept on coming before you get to your main course. Lots and lots of food for your buck. When I said revert back childhood I was a heavy eater and man I found empty spots in my stomach to fill it up due to so much food. I highly recommend this place at least try it for your first time and I guarantee you will love it, but remember bring your appetite because they offer lots of food before a main course or you can get the set course which is the food before your main meal. My food was delicious as always. Our server was not very attentive at all. 80% of the time when we go. The servers have a hard time coming back to see if we need anything else. Mindi in the bar is always excellent and we've also had another female server that is very good. The other two servers that we have had we've had to go and look for them and asked for what we needed. Another thing that is very petty, but it also happens at other restaurants. When they are serving bread with butter, why is the butter very cold like little ice cubes? It is hard if not impossible to spread on the bread. This is one thing I really don't understand why restaurants do this. read more

Typical Basque restaurant with a humongus "setup" of bread & butter, soup, beans, salsa, salad, tomato & bellpepper, french fries, corn.  Then, of course, comes the main dish of protein you choose from the menu which for me was the excellent T-Bone lamb chop with a parsley, garlic, butter gremolata.  José was an informative & winsome raconteur about Bakersfield seen through the fresh perspective of a high school sophomore. José was very helpful and made dining at Châlet a pleasant experience.   Besides Benji's, Châlet Basque is the friendliest Basque restaurant in Bakersfield.  Multirooms & seemingly not often used outdoor patio can seat well over a hundred people.  I could tell the venerable interior was designed w/ love & some fine, old school detail by the original owners. For more detail read on.  1)  Standard Setup:  a) Soup is a watery tomato tinged with earthy cabbage & small bits of starchy potatoes.   b) Red brown beans are simmered til soft and thickened in its own juices.  c) Salsa is stewed tomatoes with piquant chiles  d) Salad: Cooling, refreshing, crispy, crunchy romaine in creamy, vinegar oil dressing. Marinated tomato slices with chopped green bell pepper.  e) French Fries: Thick cut potatoes f) Canned sweet corn  2) Thick T-bone Lamb Chops: Great quality, meaty, lightly lamby, gamey. Grilled to a rich brown on the outside  and rich, moist, red, pink interior. Knowing that Bakersfield is known for Basque food, we made it a point to stop here on our way up the Sierras on a road trip; but we forgot that restaurants may be closed on Mondays. The one we'd been meaning to go to was closed, but Chalet Basque was next on the list, so we came here. We called ahead and made a reservation, but it was still about a half hour for a seat when we got here, and we were told the kitchen was closing soon. It seemed there was only one guy working the whole dining room, and he was working his butt off. The decor is "venerable" and feels like a local hideout. In fact, we got the impression that "regulars" got served first, which is probably as it should be. We had a bottle of the house wine which was great and went well with the dinner; the usual side salad, tongue, and beans were great. Fries and green beans were so-so. My sister had a lamb leg, her daughter had fried chicken, and I had whiskey lamb chops. I think the lamb chops were the best. If we were back in Bakersfield on a Monday night, we might stop here again. read more
