I came here for breakfast. The building is old and needs a definite upgrade. The chairs were torn and the ceiling could use some love. Aside from the old 80's aesthetic, the food was pretty straightforward and not bad. Given that it's breakfast there were not a lot of options. To be honest, in my opinion, when you have simple offerings it's really hard to mess it up. I had eggs sausage and potatoes, my wife had a bacon and egg sandwich with brioche. We both enjoyed our meals. I'm not sure if I would come here again ; this isn't a place we would go out of our way to eat at. read more

People need to give this place a chance. I remember what this place used to be and I believe it still has some gas still left in the tank. We did not make a reservation because we showed up right when they opened at 5:30pm. We were quickly seated and our waiter Vance helped us out. He chose my wife's wine since she couldn't make up her mind and I had a Blue Moon, which was served in a chilled glass. She loved the wine choice. We started off with an appetizer (deep fried artichoke hearts) which was a special, which Vance told us used to be a regular item on the menu. We ordered the lemon caper chicken and the nights special, which was a slow roasted pork loin, covered in apples. Noth dishes were served with your choice of potato and mixed vegetables. The appetizer when served was delicious. The sauce which was poured over the app was delicious, but shouldn't have been poured over since it made the deep fried portion spongy and sticky. When the meal came out it looked great. Both of the dishes were very delicious. The restaurant is a little out dated, like you are walking into a formal golf course restaurant, but don't let that fool you. The service was outstanding, the food was delicious and the restaurant was clean and well maintained. Overall I think we will be coming back here soon. The prices are a little higher, like most places are these days, but considering the quality of the food and how great the service is, it was well worth the price. read more

I recently visited The Bistro for the first time last week, and I will definitely be back on a regular basis! I have always wondered what is was like inside and what type of food they served. When I first walked in, I felt like I wasn't in Bakersfield. The atmosphere was different than anywhere else in town. As I walked through the restaurant to my table, I was pleasantly surprised by their layout, lighting, and many decorative items. When I was seated, the waitress immediately got us set up with water and menus. We ordered two appetizers, and they were brought out to us in a timely matter. We got the spinach artichoke dip and the quesadillas without the steak. I am vegetarian so I am always looking for new spots to eat, and let me tell you, their quesadillas were BOMB. They used a hot BBQ sauce on top of the crispiest tortilla with a delicious cheese blend. I was worried it sounded weird at first, but holy moly--it was delicious! I have never seen a twist on quesadillas like this before. The homemade potato chips served with the artichoke dip were amazing too. We ordered dinner, and the whole time the waitresses kept our water glasses full and checked on us frequently. While we waited for our meal, I walked through the back of the restaurant to go the the bathroom. There are so many cool nooks with cute booths tucked throughout the restaurant. Next time I would like to try some of those spots out because they seemed like the perfect date night spot or even the perfect place to discuss business. You can actually hear your partner and it feels secluded and private--a rare thing in Bakersfield where in most restaurants you feel like you are on display! And ladies, the bathroom is perfect. You first walk into an area with mirrors all around. I could check the back of my hair, side views of my outfit and fix my lipstick. I hate going places where I can't get a good mirror to refresh, but these were more than I was expecting. Our dinner came out and was tasty. We ordered Mac and cheese without meat and the patty melt without meat. The caramelized onions were delicious on the non-patty melt and the Mac and cheese was more of a white sauce and had an unique savory flavor. The Bistro is a little gem tucked away in what could be considered the business district of Bakersfield, CA. This unique place is mainly known for being adjoined to The Four Points Sheraton and for being one of the few "Fine Dining" restaurants in our locale. The Bistro offers daily specials, as well as regular menu options which include Filet Mignon, Salmon, and even crab cakes as an appetizer. One of the best things about this place doesn't come on a dish or in a glass.. The bartender Sunny, has one of those "kind in the eyes" smiles, which will absolutely melt your heart. His drinks are poured with an air of dignity lacking in many new age mixologists, and he leaves you feeling like a regular, even on your first visit. Back to the food, I ordered the Filet Mignon, and I absolutely love that it was seasoned... but slightly disappointed in the fact that mine was overdone (Could have been due to resting, as I was in a party of 25+) but I did enjoy the vegetables. I am one that loves a crisp snap in mine and found them to be steamed to perfection. Although the portions are ample, you may want to leave room for dessert. Typical staples, like "Chocolate Lava Cake" and "Warm Apple Tartlet" will not disappoint. One of the other main attractions of this restaurant is the décor and soft background lighting that provide a perfect ambience for an enjoyable meal. It is this atmosphere that has helped make The Bistro not just a lunchtime hit, but also a hot spot for couples in the evening. The restaurant has a number of comfortable booths that offer privacy for a more romantic dinner as well as several tables for parties of all sizes. Accommodation seems to be the key here. All in all, The Bistro is a fantastic place to enjoy an after-work cocktail, where your meal will be both healthy and hearty. The staff always greets you with a smile and are helpful when describing the dishes on the menu. You can expect the special treatment every time, but you never have to expect to pay too much. LOVED IT!!! Our server, Vance, was awesome! He was kind, friendly, and attentive. The restaurant was very quiet for a Saturday night, but we got there when it first opened (5:30). The menu itself was pretty small, but the food was great. They serve hot sourdough rolls and butter. Yum. We got a short rib quesadilla with the sauces on the side. So good. We came here for dinner. And was surprised to see that it was pretty empty. I don't feel like many locals come here as it seems like it caters to guests from the Four Points. I ordered their ribeye which came with mashed potatoes and vegetables. I order my steaks medium rare, and usually don't ever get medium rare, but the Bistro did get it right. Unfortunately, all the food came out rather cold. The mashed potatoes were cold, and the steak was warm. It was very delicious and juicy, but it's gotta be hot! However, their service was phenomenal, our server was on point throughout the entire night, and had 2 other helpers to assist him. I ordered the Mesquite Chicken Sandwich. It was good, but the avocado wasn't really ripe that was on it. Great seasoning and the sauce was tangy. Bartender was super friendly. After a long day of driving he was welcoming and was fun to talk to. He knew a lot about whisky's which helped us make our mind up about what we wanted to try. This was my first time dining at The Bistro, but my husband's 2nd time. I had a Groupon voucher for this place, so we decided to come here for dinner on Saturday evening. Plenty of seating on a weekend evening, there were only 2-3 tables of customers. Only 1 wait staff to serve all of us though, so it could get overwhelming. We ordered: (1) Prime rib (comes with steamed veggies & mashed potatoes) - mine was cooked medium, and a bit too chewy for my tastes. While the slab of meat was larger than that of Black Angus, it didn't taste as good. There was no au jus sauce either, just horseradish. I was a bit disappointed w/ the flavoring, but the portion size was definitely bang for your buck. It only cost $25 too. I think the prime rib at Hungry Hunter is still the best so far that I've tried in town. 3 star (2) Ribeye (comes w/ steamed veggies & mashed potatoes) - my husband ordered this entree. He asked for medium but got served medium rare; good flavoring; 3 star (3) French onion soup - this was a 5-star soup; my husband ordered this and loved it. he says this is the only item he would get again if he ever came to this restaurant! SO GOOD. I agree with him; did taste fabulous (4) House salad - this appetizer was too small; he expected the portion size of this salad to be larger since it costs $6. it was only enough for 1 person! a bit disappointing. We probably wouldn't have come here if it wasn't for the Groupon voucher I had in hand (and needed to use before it expired). While in town for a conference, we were staying at the adjacent hotel, so this spot just made sense. Unfortunately, it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Night 1: private room. Adequate service except that they miscounted and forgot to bring one of our party her meal. 30 minutes later, she got her chicken. My ahi tuna was severely overcooked and not very good quality. The accompanying veggies looked torched and soggy. I left with my tummy rumbling that night. The only positive is that where the kitchen was lacking, the bartenders were certainly overcompensating. Bless you bartender man. Breakfast day 2: worse service than previously from a surly waitress. She actually raised her voice at my mother for asking where our food was. Definitely not impressive. Our food arrived very late and very cold. Old looking fruit, forgotten items on the meal that no one wanted to ask for lest they wait an extra 30 minutes. Coffee was only refilled by the kindly bus boys who kept refilling our water glasses. Otherwise, I think the waitress was busy lost in dream land. The quality of food was ok (ie how do you screw up eggs?,) but nothing I'd write home about. Honestly, if we weren't staying at the adjacent hotel, this place would never have warranted a second pit stop. But when you're in an unfamiliar town, sometimes this is what you have to suffer through. Overall, I'd say the food was meh. The menu sounds good, but it lacks in execution. The only reason we ate breakfast here was because it was free. Our hotel, The Four Points, offered us a free breakfast due to a little snafu with our room. Service was not great. Coffee was served in small cups and we had to ask for refills each time. While attractive inside the seating was grossly soft and uncomfortable, it would have been more comfortable sitting in a bucket. We ended up sitting in hard chairs, the better choice. First of all, the place was nearly empty, but we stood for a good 5 minutes before anyone noticed us. Once seated, the waitress saw our vouchers for the free breakfast and basically treated us indifferently. She would ask a question and not wait for the answer. She never checked her tables. The free breakfast was a standard two eggs, choice of breakfast meat, potatoes and toast, nothing out of the ordinary. We chose the bacon, but sadly it was dull and flavorless. My eggs tasted like they were cooked in I Can't Believe It's Not Butter. The up side, Mr. B said they did an outstanding poached egg. Not my thing. We could have gotten a better complimentary breakfast from Super 8. I would not recommend patronizing this restaurant based on our experience. read more

Their Parmesan Garlic wings were hands down the best thing on the menu I ordered the filet, which was average. The Mac and cheese had such good flavor. We were here today for a ladies' lunch and it was perfect. Bryan was our incredible server. Super friendly service here! The place was dead on a Thurs at lunchtime. Odd. I would for sure come here more often. All 4 of us had a different type of salad and wow! They were all chock full of "stuff" and were all presented differently. The chef was very creative! The restaurant was large, very open and would be a great choice for a business lunch. I thought coming in that it would be a dressier place (from what I heard) but it really is a 'come as you are' kind of eatery. No pretentiousness at all. Would recommend. And I will be back for that salad from the lunch menu. I got the Asian one but substituted the chicken for my fave - shrimp, and it did not disappoint! read more

The only reason it gets two instead of one is the great service. The servers were on top of it. But, the breakfast was not worth the money. The over medium eggs were crisp on the edges. Hash browns were a mushy block most likely reheated from being frozen. I ordered the "Eggs and Bacon" so I'd get breakfast potatoes. She asked me what kind of toast I wanted. I said no toast. She asked if I wanted hash browns instead. I said sure. I figured, great, extra potatoes for a snack later, I can take it with me. Instead she ordered me the "All American" breakfast with hash browns, no potatoes. Here's the big clencher, the thing many breakfast places do and you get stuck with in the end...the menu didn't say that COFFEE is $3.50! Just plain old crappy coffee. Really good food, but expensive. The Bistro is one of those nice meal, special occassion places. Spacious, well-appointed room, great service and an older crowd, because of the prices. My filet mignon was truly excellent. The vertical presentation with the filet leaning on mashed and asparagus spears with a thin crinkle potato chip soaring above was visually pleasing, but less than innovative. We went to The Bistro tonight for Valentine's Day. We went early so they were not busy! They had a special menu for Valentine's Day. It started with an Amuse Bouche of fig stuffed with goat cheese on honey. Then we choice the meat, cheese and fruit tray. We then ordered the asparagus soup. Entrees my husband ordered the sirloin with blue cheese on a bed of grilled onions, I ordered the sea scallops. Our two sides were roasted red potatoes and creamy Parmesan orzo. The amuse bouche was tasty. The meat and cheese tray was okay but nothing to write home about unfortunately it went down hill from there. We were served our entrees before our soup. The steak and scallops were under cooked and only warm! The potatoes and Orzo were flat cold and had absolutely no seasoning. When the soup came it was at least hot and had nice flavor, but the asparagus was cut in a variety of lengths, some very tiny all the way to pieces too big for the soup spoon. We asked for the dessert to go and were very surprised when we got home to have 3 petitfours and a 3 cubes of cheese I guess that was their version of "cheesecake" Needless to say we will not be back, this was a cold, tasteless very pricey meal! It was a very disappointing Valentine's dinner to say the least. read more

I would have given this 2.5 stars if I could. The service was friendly and prompt but here are all the little things: - I was not offered any specials and found out later they had them. That was the only flaw in service but I was surprised the servers weren't taught to upsell, offer, suggest, etc. Friendly but just not sophisticated - Decor: At first I liked it but the more I looked the more I realized it kind of looks like an ihop. I'm staying at the affiliated hotel and realized they had the same decorator. The strips and plaid don't quite work in the rooms and they don't quite work in the restaurant even with the art displays, etc. (a plus for trying to feature something interesting. Hopefully they are promoting local artists although I think I have seen this stuff in Healdsburg.) Wine list: Vintages are listed. I didn't ask any questions but I bet if I did I wouldn't get a proper answer. I was surprised to see an Opus One bottle and half bottle! Presentation: Pretty but dated. Culinary school stuff. In fact, the entire meal (entree and dessert was very much like a sit down catered meal like at a wedding or maybe a cruise.) Entre Preparation: Filet Mignon ordered medium rare. Received medium. Good char but not top quality beef. My guess is "choice" and not well aged prime. Herbed mashed potatoes were really garlic mashed potatoes and too much for me. Veggies average and most culinary school down to preparation of carrots and small white beet. Dessert Preparation: When I was asked if I would like to see the dessert tray I said "yes, especially if there is a classic cheesecake". There was a cheesecake but it had raspberry swirl on top and after saying I was allergic to raspberries, I selected the chocolate lava cake...which came with guess what? Raspberry sauce. The cake was exactly like frozen cakes I have purchased. The cheesecake which I didn't order also looked exactly like what you might see sold by the slice in Von's. Ambiance: Far too bright. I thought it was going to be a traditional, dark steak house and again, more like ihop. They did dim the light above my table. Apparently they are all individually dimmable but why they would serve an evening meal with bright lights is beyond me. I spent $50 for the meal and $10 tip. Although there wasn't anything extremely wrong and the food was overall tasty and pretty, I will bet they never fill the place because of all the little things that made it not worth $60. Still, kudos for good service and just some training and a little tweaking and slight modernization and it would merit the price. read more

You can always count on fantastic food, caring staff, etc. However, when we went for Valentines Day, the menu was drastically changed, and my favorite dish - Chicken Paillard-was missing. So disappointing! It was replaced with a "special Mac and Cheese dish! Ugh! Also, the menu is significantly smaller, with smaller options, and they have added daily specials. That doesn't mean the special of the day is any less expensive! We still love their crab cakes, but next time I want to go somewhere special, we'll probably go to Uricchios! I've been here a few times. I usually come for happy hour- they have 1/2 off appetizers and cheap drinks. Service is very prompt in the bar area. I have eaten twice in the dinner section, where the service tends to be a bit slower. I believe I had steak both times, it was pretty good, although quite pricey. My last visit will probably really be my last time. My group of 6 came in with a groupon which discounted $100; & our bill come out to about $300- something. They also tacked on 18% gratuity *beware when they ask if "you want soup or salad with your meal" they make it seem like it comes with it; It's a tiny salad or soup each $6. read more

The first time I came here I had a reservation but the restaurant ended up being closed when I showed up. Funny thing is they confirmed it and everything. Well this last time I came to have dinner with the lady, her boss and his wife. Funny thing is...I was actually able to eat this time! The restaurant itself has a classy feel to it. A lot of wood grains and deep blue colors. It felt like a nice restaurant at an upscale chain hotel in a big city. The dining room itself is very large which made it feel like you were eating privately even though the restaurant was about a third full. Most of the patrons here were older and well dressed or younger couples on a date. The service was very good. Our waitress was attentive and not overly friendly. Which is how I like it. Our water glasses remained full and she seemed legitimately concerned about anything that may have concerned us. We had a couple appetizers to start. The Artichoke Hearts Tempura which were large fried balls with the artichoke hearts and herb creamed cheese. They were pretty good and perfectly cooked. We also had the Vietnamese Chicken Wings. They were sweet, spicy and delicious. For my entree I had the New York Strip, medium rare. It came with mashed potatoes and fresh green beans. The steak itself was tasty but overcooked. The sides were also tasty but were lukewarm. My girlfriend had the Seafood Pasta Special. It was basically fettuccine alfredo with shrimp, scallops and salmon. I didn't try it but she enjoyed it. It also came out about 5 minutes after everyone else's entree so they removed it from the bill even though nobody complained. Now that's customer service! My girlfiend and I also shared Tiramisu for dessert. It was good but not quite sweet enough. Overall we had a good meal and the quiet atmosphere and good service was nice. It was also nice seeing people eating there that were dressed appropriately for that restaurant. I'll come back again I'm sure but I could only boost my previous review by two stars because of the initial mistake they made with my previous visit. read more

The Bistro is one of the few restaurants I found in town that actually serves prime grade steak. Service is good but can feel a little chaotic and slow when it's busy. Their macaroni and cheese is excellent! I have had several I their steaks and they are very good as well. I recommend making reservations if you decide to go.
