3.5 The garlic fried chicken was super garlic-y which even for me was slightly too much even though I LOVE garlic but it was tasty for sure. Amazing that I'd drive out of my way? Probably not but if I'm in the neighborhood, I'd stop by. Service was great. To each their own but I would do American vs Basque. The cabbage soup was good but I hate bean salad and cottage cheese so there's very little reason for me to get Basque. Let me start off by saying the experience here was bad from the start. The wait to be seated sign is a joke! After 15 minutes of waiting and no one came, we sat ourselves. The tall blonde lady that worked there was annoyed & made sure to announce in the room that we sat ourselves! I'm pretty sure everyone heard! Our punishment was having to wait 10 min for a menu. Great place ... this was our first time with Basque Dining and it was great ... we choose Pyrenees's after seeing it suggested by Guy Fieri and Gabriel Iglesias "Fluffy" ... couldn't made a better choice ... we sat in a booth in the bar area ... server was very friendly ... the amount of food for 2 people will leave you filled to the brim ... we actually had to surrender couldn't finish ... This restaurant was freaking amazing!! I went with a party of 6 + a kid and we all ate the lunch setup, which comes in American or Basque. I chose the Basque and got the cabbage soup, which was delicious on its own but when we added the salsa and beans to it, then dipped the bread in the broth, it became heavenly! I tried the clam chowder my sister ordered and couldn't believe how delicious it was! Step aside Splash Café, this is my new favorite! The fries were tasty - even without ketchup - and were the perfect texture. The salad and cottage cheese were wonderful together! It was unexpected but the flavors married quite well. I ordered the garlic chicken, which was flavorful, moist, and had an appropriately crispy skin. It was wonderful! My husband got the pork belly sandwich and was surprised at how tasty AND tender it was! Everyone got a bite and it was just as delicious as he claimed! My sister shared her fish and chips, which were breaded beautifully. The exterior was nice and crisp but the inside meat melted in our mouths! The dipping sauce was perfect and the entire experience was overwhelmingly amazing - until dessert came out. We were surprised to see our creme brûlée was burned, which was the first disappointment of the meal. When tasted, it had a burned marshmallow flavor, which we all love, but it was just a little too much for me (and the others at our table). I ordered the flan, which was adorable but tasted slightly of coffee. To be fair, I didn't read whether the menu specified it should have a bitter bite to it but it was really unexpected. Other than our dessert disasters, which we all ate anyway (just scraped off the top of the flan and ate around/under the burned brûlée), we had a great time and our waitress was extremely attentive. We even had other waiters and waitresses come to the table to ask how things were. Good stuff. Could rave all day. Huge place. There. Is even a back place to hang out in the back. A few draw backs for the norms: traveling through an industrial park, entering on the side into a bar like atmosphere. That's all. The servers are most excellent and friendly. Food comes out quick and delicious. Friday Prime Rib!!! So good. Garlic fried chicken - fresh and delicious garlic. A bottle of cold red wine will only set you back $12. Amazing. There were 3 of us, we ordered the basque setup for the 3 of us along with entrées of garlic shrimp and the garlic fried chicken..The service was great and food was delicious..The only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 stare. I can't believe I have not left this review yet. Bakersfield is known for its basque Community. Which is very rare because it's not very common. Right next to Pyrenees is wool growers and Sarducci's both really good places as well but they are not five stars. Pyrenees is the best in town. They have the best bread in the entire world. In fact it's sold In grocery stores all around the United States. They have the best cabbage soup in town hands down. Their "set up" Is the best set up Out of all the restaurants in town. Their cottage cheese is so good their onion rings are amazing. Their salad is one of my favorite salads. They have the best garlic fried chicken in town. The bar is always really busy but they have really nice booths in there. Since it's always busy in there I just go to the back and eat in the restaurant or on the back patio which I super love. The place to be for Basque food! The ambiance is great and the staff is friendly and very attentive. Our waiter was Mario, and he was on top of his game! He made sure that we always had refill on our ice tea and checked on us frequently to ensure we were enjoying our meal. If your a fan of Lamb you need to to try the lamb lollipops, they were divine. Wasn't a fan of the soup a little bland, the pickle tongue was little over done but still tasty, beans were the bomb. The food over all is solid and highly recommend coming here. read more

The best steak in Bakersfield. Most restaurants like Black angus, Sizzlerz, and Texas road house over cook a medium rare steak to a near well done. It ruins my night when that happens. Pyrenees cafe cooks steaks just as I ordered. The steaks are a little big, but it's so good that even a child could finish it. I highly recomend this place for a family of a group of 4 or higher. It's garbage. we will NEVER go back. To start off, we get there and no one is in the dinning area. Fawn is serving in there (with another girl) she gets upset that we were sitting? Second, she gives us containers for refills WITH FOOD CHUNKS IN IT. We are constantly having to get her attention to get refills and other SERVICES. We eventually stopped asking her and asked another server for SERVICE. Third, we had been waiting a whole hour and address it with Fawn. She said "it would be right out" and asked her for our check. She began to get irate and stated "it's coming, and I have a party". I asked her again for the bill and I definitely wasn't going to entertain her disrespectful tone. So...Haven't eaten here in years! My parents came in from out of town and invited me here for breakfast so I thought I would try it again! The bar motif seems a little old school, but the food was amazing! Had their chili verde omelette with hash browns and biscuits and gravy. I made to two of phone calls.. the First time Isai answered the phone and right away I could tell he was busy but he still took the time to answer the phone find out what I needed (kinda complicated special request) he listened told me that it was possible and then asked if he could just put me on hold to put down the drinks he was carrying so I told him I'd just call back in 5 min. 5 min later Chris answered the phone I explained the same thing with how I wanted the the order he was immediately willing to try yo accommodate me just had to verify to make sure. Sat in the bar which was very noisy at first. But it was fun listening to the local banter. We ordered center cut chops and oxtail stew....the trimmings were salad, corn chowder (fantastic), beans, cottage cheese, pickeled tongue, salsa, bread and garlic toast, there were great fries too. CRAZY busy! Went for drinks on a Wed night. Not sure when the last time is that I waited in line to get into a bar but - twas the night before Thanksgiving! It was literally packed, no room to move. Getting a drink took a connection of a friend of a friend. The female bartenders - well, they were interesting to watch. I am sure they make great cash but I would not have the patience for what they have to put up with. All ages present, mostly a younger crowd for this occasion. There is an AMI.COM app whereby you can control the jukebox of the bar from your phone! One of our friends was having a blast with that. We heard Prince to Johnny Cash to Enrique Iglesius. Today we came here to celebrate my husband's installation as an Officer in the Knights of Columbus. The food was great! The Set-Up was ordered for our party with grilled chicken and Tri-Tip as the main course. The Set-Up always comes with Cabbage Soup, Salsa, Beans, Salad, pickled Cow's Tongue, Cucumbers, and whatever main entree you order. The atmosphere is chill and relaxed. The servers are friendly, and the place is always clean and welcoming. Since there are several seating sections, outside, indoor, bar, there is a perfect place for everyone. Why 4 stars rather than 4? The wait time. As our party arrived it was obvious that they did not save enough seats. Either way, we had to sit on the table next to our group which we were fine with it, but every time they brought food to the tables, we got a small portion of it served to our table. Our table had 5 people (2 kids. 2 hungry kids lol). The waitress were good and brought out food without complaints or attitude when we pointed out that we ran out of items. The food was great! We stopped in to Pyrenees Cafe after hearing about it from Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives and I read some reviews. I've never had Basque cuisine, so we decided to give it a try. It's bar in the front, restaurant in the back, and our party of two sat in the bar so we could watch the game. Our waitress, Natalie, was incredible attentive and helpful throughout our entire visit. We started with an order of fresh pork rinds, and decided on the rack of lamb and garlic fried chicken as our entrées. The entrées are accompanied by a slew of side dishes, referred to as "the setup". This includes hot and fresh bread, salsa, Basque cabbage soup, beans, salad, Spaghetti Bolognese, and hand-cut French fries. Natalie also brought out some of their clam chowder to sample. Everything presented tasted amazing, albeit in quantities that could feed a family of four. When the main course finally arrived, we were ready to pop, but we made room. With 9 lollipops on the rack and 3 generous pieces of chicken, we didn't finish but we made a valiant attempt. The ambience, the service, the portions, the flavors; everything at Pyrenees Cafe is exceptional. It was my first experience at this location, I was sitting with my friends and a gentleman that worked the bar said, "your out!, get out!" I asked my friend what was going on, she said it was a homeless man. The bartender said, "that man smells like shit!" As much as that may be true I didn't like the inhuman treatment. Let me start with the positives. The food is great- that's why we go here. But that's about it. On this most recent visit the annoyances far outweighed any positives. We most certainly will not be back. It's always bugged me that any restaurant adds a mandatory gratuity (a contradiction in terms) of 20% for parties of 8 or more and won't split the check. The clear message here is that they would rather inconvenience the customer than make an employee actually do a little extra to actually accommodate the customer and still demand a full tip. For those not familiar with Basque restaurants, the "setup" is served "family style" and you can order entrees in addition if you desire. The setup has always been endless but on this visit we were informed that they don't do refills. So my wife and I paid almost $50 for soup, salad, pasta, fries and bread- these were small servings as the items were not refilled and we had to share the items with the rest of our party. We drank water, which we refilled from pitchers on the table (convenient), as the sodas were almost $4 each (add tax and tip and you're spending almost $5 per soda). Our service was fine, but not outstanding. The waitress had to be reminded about a refill and didn't share that they were out of green beans (part of the setup) until asked. So apparently they will still charge for the full setup even when they DON'T HAVE the full setup. She did bring out some substitute vegetables when we mentioned the lack of green beans, but after we had finished the meal. When the bill came, we discovered that they charged 3.99% extra for paying with a credit card (this was posted on the inside of the exit door so we did see it when we left). On our bill, this was a whopping $17. Who carries hundreds of dollars in cash with them? Virtually any party with more than 3 people will get into triple digits here. They obviously know this and exploit it. Oh, and we were charged full price for an extra setup because one of the kids in our party ordered a burger entree and still had some soup (apparently the "setup" was not included in that order). Although they did refund that later, why not an option to add the setup for a small fee? Overall, the experience left us all upset with the nickel and diming in addition the already rather high prices. And really, Pyrenees, you can't be bothered to split a check for 10 people (it would've been 3 checks) when you're charging a $60 tip! The food was great, but we left feeling like we'd just been taken advantage of. read more

I called during coronavirus to see if they were doing takeout - and they're not, unfortunately, but it was the owner who answered the phone and despite probably having to answer that same question 1000x a day he took the time to explain and let me know when the estimate to be back to curbside service would be. We were a group of 24 people for a Thanksgiving Eve family dinner. The restaurant has 10 family style tables. We were there at 6:00 PM and our waitress was very accommodating with menus and drink orders. By 7:00, the place started filling up with younger groups of people. By 7:30 we couldn't hear the person next to us talk. We had smaller children to elderly people in our group. This place is located in a seedy part of town. Our Uber driver seemed shocked to hear where we wanted to go. Homeless people and bikers hanging out around the building. The bar when we left had security guys letting people in from a line outside. There is no exit from the restaurant section with the only exit through the bar. It was double capacity at the least and wall to bar crowded and would have been impossible to exit from the restaurant in an emergency. I ordered my dinner 3rd out of 24 diners and got my food last. It was supposed to be scampi in cream sauce. The sauce was watery and didn't even begin to cling to the pasta. The shrimp was good, but again plain with no sauce. By the time we got our food, the waitress was nonexistent most of the time. I thought I would have dessert since my dinner was marginal but was never given the chance to order it. My dinner consisted of the Basque set up menu shared with 4 people. My husband had a lamb shank and it had spaghetti sauce on it instead of barbecue sauce. He didn't enjoy it either. The hamburgers and sandwiches ordered by others looked amazing. If you are 21 to 35ish you may like this place. We won't be back, ever. read more

This is a staple in Bakersfield.. the food is excellent.. they have live music on occasions.. with a patio courtyard and pretty well shaded throughout.. with misters and fans.. that are a must in the Baketsfield summer. I've tried probably two thirds of the menu and have enjoyed it across the board.. great flavor! You will leave with a full belly no matter what you order. Reasonable drink prices, full bar and historic yet clean building.. renovated but kept it's traditional feel. Friendly bartenders, and good atmosphere with great food.. only issue you might face is finding seating so reservations are a good idea if you have a party greater than four. read more
