This is my favorite place for pupusas! Made to order and everyone working is so kind. I went when they use to be cash only. Now there's tap pay. An entre dining in takes about 15-20 min which is much faster than most pupusa places. Their cabbage slaw is so fresh and all their salsas are delicious. This place was recommended to me from a local that swears it's one of the best place says to get pupusa's and Salvadorian food. That person was 100% correct! The food over here was really good and it makes you want to come back again to try other items. This is truly a hole in the wall, sketchy strip mall, dive bar next to it, not the best place to be at night, but truly come here for the food. I was warmly welcomed by the staff, who took my order for Combination number 1 with Revuelta Pupusas (2 pupusas, plantains, fried yucca and pork). The food is made fresh over here, so it did take a little a while, but absolutely worth it. Pupusas were crispy, hot and savory in the middle. You get all the fixings with it, the salsa, pickled cabbage, and the other items, especially the plantains, which is always one of my favorite sides. The fried yucca and pork was really good too, but I was really full after everything that came on the combination plate. Food and service wise it was a very good experience. I'm been searching for a place that has great pupusas for a while. I stopped by on a Sunday before they closed at 6pm. They have a small parking lot shared with some other shops. With the staff's recommendation, I ordered combo #2, which is (2) pupusas with rice and beans. Afterwards, I sat at the tables while waiting for my order. It was a small shop with tables that accommodate small groups. I got my order within 10 minutes. For the pupusas, I got (1) revuelta with pork, cheese, & beans and (1) chorizo. The pupusas were salty, crispy, and cheesy. The chorizo one was particular more salty. The provided curtido balanced out the saltiness well. The beans and rices were just okay. It did taste a bit under flavor. I ate these with the green sauce they provided and it added a bit of spiciness to it. Overall, the experience was just okay. [ Background ] August 2024 on a Friday at ~2:30 PM NYT Cooking recently posted a video on how to make pupusas at home [1]. However, I didn't want to spend the time and effort making them in case they turned out subpar, and I wanted my first time trying pupusas to be an authentic experience. Therefore, I decided to visit Pupusas Y Mas, which has been on my to-eat list for many months now, for lunch since multiple reviews claim the food there tastes like genuine Salvadoran cuisine. This hole in the wall is located in a small strip mall with a few other businesses, and the parking lot is shared between them. The parking situation is decent with multiple spots surrounding the building. Many of the spaces were filled when I got there, but I was able to snag one on the side. Even though I came at an off-hour time for lunch, the inside of the restaurant was bustling; five parties were already chowing down on their meals, and another person came in after me. So their busyness was a good sign. The interior is homely with a lively ambiance. Trinkets and other objects adorn a shelf, multiple framed pictures (including one of Frida Kahlo) are on display, and vined plants scale the walls near the front counter. A TV in a corner broadcasted a talk show while songs in Spanish played in the background. There are six tables that can seat up to four people along with three larger tables for bigger groups. I love how fresh flowers spruce up every table. [ Food ] A sign at the bottom of the front counter states that the cooking time varies from 10-20 minutes since everything is cooked to order (this appears to be a standard practice across the various pupusa restaurants I've looked up). So if you want freshly made pupusas, be patient. If you are not good at waiting or are planning to eat during peak hours, I'd suggest calling ahead to place your order. Unfortunately, they don't have an online menu with up-to-date prices, but you can reference my attached pictures of the menu. I already looked at the reviews and older pictures of the menu on Yelp beforehand, so I knew exactly what I wanted. I ordered: * Combo #2 2 pupusas with rice and beans ($11.00 + $0.75) For the pupusas, I chose the 1. revuelta with pork, cheese, and beans since it's a popular Salvadoran flavor and 2. cheese with asada. This combination order technically costs $11.00. However, when I paid, the cheese with asada pupusa cost an extra 75 cents. I'm assuming the more expensive options at the bottom of the pupusa category have an additional charge, which is logical, but I do wish that was more transparent on the menu. The pupusas were warm and full of cheesy, savory flavor. They were lightly grilled, not greasy at all, with a slight golden-brown tinge. The revuelta was pretty good, but my favorite was the asada. Don't forget to eat the pupusas with the curtido to add an acidic crunch along with the two salsas for additional flavor and a hint of heat. The generous portion of curtido included cabbage, carrots, flecks of dried herb (oregano?), and a note of acidity (vinegar?). I loved the rice. However, I wasn't a fan of the flavor of the beans, even after I added more salt. Overall, I left Pupusa Y Mas happy and with a full stomach, and I would definitely recommend the combo since it was a great value for the price. I'll have to come back and try their other dishes. [ Service ] The waitress was professional but not the friendliest, similar to what other Yelpers experienced, which was fine with me since I care more about the food and its flavor/quality when trying out a new restaurant. My order came out in about 11 minutes, which is on the lower end of their estimated cooking time. [ Tips ] The menu prices already have the tax baked in, so the price you see is the price you pay. When you're done eating, you go up to the front counter to pay. There's a big sign next to the register with a QR code for their Zelle. Otherwise, you can pay with cash or credit card (the latter has a transaction fee). This place is located behind boca del Río, with plenty of parking on the side and behind the local. I was able to order ahead and my food was ready when I arrived. The girl at the countered explained about the new menu and how they had to reduce their offered items as they were short staffed. She also mentioned that they participate at the Covina farmers market a few miles away, so you can still get pupusas after they close. I stopped by this restaurant hoping to take advantage of their advertised happy hour pupusa deal--3 for $13, 6 for $25, or 12 for $45--clearly posted on the window. I ordered 10 pupusas, and the girl at the counter tried to charge me full price at $4.99 each, bringing the total to almost $60. When I asked why it was so high and pointed at the sign, she flatly said there was no special for 10. I suggested they ring it up as a 6-pack and a 3-pack, then just charge one at regular price. She gave me a look like I was trying to scam them, when in reality I was just asking them to honor their own deal and apply basic logic. She reluctantly entered it the way I suggested, and surprise--it came out $10 cheaper. But instead of doing the right thing, she refused to honor it and acted bothered that I'd figured out a more reasonable price. Needless to say, I canceled the order and walked out. The service here is always cold and unwelcoming, and this experience sealed the deal. I usually go to El Jireh (which is a bit further away), but I stopped here for convenience. Never again. El Jireh's pupusas are not only better--they're $3.50 each compared to this place's overpriced $4.99. Good food can't make up for bad service and shady practices. I've been a regular here for a while, but after my recent experience, I'm honestly disappointed. The woman who answered the phone had a rude attitude right from the start and even overquoted me by $15. When I politely asked about the price difference, she turned it around and said I was the one being rude wild. I love supporting small businesses, especially those with vegetarian options, but customer service matters. If you're going to run a restaurant, at least treat your regulars with basic respect. Amazing pupusas and even better plantains. This place is a bit unassuming, nestled in a plaza right next to a Salvation Army. I was craving pupusas and this place really hit the spot. I ordered mushroom, squash, and spinach pupusas with some fried plantains. These pupusas are definitely some of the best I've had in the area, and the plantains are perfectly ripe with a slightly crispy exterior. I eat pupusas a few times a month, so I'll definitely be back to try more varieties. You can also make almost any pupusa vegan if you request it, and they have tons of options for vegetables. Went with my girlfriend and it was our first time trying out this place. We sat at an open table and they brought us the menus. Very nice and friendly staff. We each got the combo with 2 pupusas, rice, and beans. We both got the revueltas and I ordered 1 additional pupusa with shrimp. I got a bottled sprite and my lady got an horchata. Everything is freshly made and the pupusas come out piping hot. The flavor on both types of pupusas we tried were excellent! Very simple use of ingredients but everything came together well. Didn't even use most of the veggie mix (encurtido) and the red salsa had really great flavor too, albeit without a bunch of spice. The pupusas were stacked with ingredients and not overdone with the masa. Nice char on the outside of the pupusas added to the simplicity of the stuffing. I burned the roof of my mouth a bit, even after realizing how hot it was after the first bit, but I couldn't help myself. I was also very pleasantly surprised when I took my first bite of the pupusa with shrimp. I didn't know what to expect but I was amazed with how much of the shrimp's flavor came through. It tasted like I was eating shrimp straight off a grill or BBQ. I got thru about 1 and a half and my girlfriend finished 1 of hers. Rounded up everything to include their tip and it was still better than some other more expensive, less flavorful places. The location is a bit on the smaller/medium size but I think we would be okay to order for pickup next time. Excellent mom and pop spot with great food!
