I got the Margherita pizza. sauce was not fresh at all and tasted sour. mozzarella cheese was not creamy, but clumpy and dry. the crust was the worst- very soft and doughy yet charred and burnt. had such a bitter flavor. pizza flavor was non existant, and the crust had no crisp and was bitter from being burnt in places. This pizza place is different. The Frittura sampler was good, the sausage one was the best! I love a wood fired pizza and these were good. I think I maybe should have gotten a pepperoni pizza to really have gotten the gist of the place first but I definitely still ate what I got over time. The restaurant was clean, my server was a young guy who was patient and helpful. The bar looked like a fun time and I hope to get to try the drinks one day. This is a family spot and the patio space looks nice as well. Overall 3.7 only cause I maybe should have went traditional first. The tiramisu was okay... The pizzas here are individual pies/servings (the menu even recommends one per adult), so it was the perfect no-mess option. A lot of the gripes I see mentioned here is the softness/chew of the pizza, however, that's what makes it stand out from other pizza options. They make it pretty clear that they serve Neapolitan pies only. I personally prefer their white over their red pizza. The creaminess and the chew? Chef's kiss. After 4 years, went back to see if it was better. The interior was much better, less crowded, and felt comfortable. The service was worse, however, with random servers taking our orders and often not coming back to check on us. We waited a long time for our beer and a short time for the pizza! Pupatella is a really great spot if you want neapolitan pizza and I don't think I've ever had a pizza this flavorful. I got the eggplant and red pepper and the mushroom pizza and they were both amazing. I personally enjoyed the eggplant and red pepper pizza more but that's because I usually prefer red pizzas. The eggplant and red pepper pizza had so much smoky flavor from the veggies and the little chunks of mozzarella was divine. The red sauce had the perfect balance of acidity and sweetness of the tomatoes and the aromatics from the herbs. I liked that the toppings were small chunks because it made it easy to get everything in one bite I was extremely impressed and mindblown by the mushroom pizza. If you're a truffle fan, you NEED to try this. There's just so much umami coming from the sauteed mushrooms, garlic, and the truffle oil. The mushrooms are super meaty but the brie cheese and the italian cream makes it super creamy. It was literally a flavor bomb. I think the truffle taste can be a little bit too much for some people but I really enjoyed it. Even though the flavors were great, I was pretty disappointed with the crust and the service. The crust was just really really soggy and wasn't as pillowy as other neapolitan crusts I've had. I'm glad that they didn't burn the crust but maybe it needed just a little bit more time? And although the servers were very nice, it took us really long to order and about 30 minutes to wait for the check even though we asked for it twice. read more

Having been a big fan of Pupatella over the past decade I knew writing a review had to Benin the cards. We hadn't been here in the last few months but had heard of the renovation of the restaurant so on a Friday night we decided to revisit our old friend. If you haven't been before you might be surprised to see the building, nestled between a gas station, Mediterranean restaurant and a converted gym, hardly a top tourist destination. But as their first and flagship venue (more on that later) it really is an ideal spot. Parking directly in front is hard to come by but the Safeway lot across the street is an easy and generally available option. Among the new features at the venue is a high, bright sign announcing you have found Pupatella. As mentioned, Friday at dinner time was the time of our visit, so we hit an anticipated line. Dont be put off by this, it usually moves fairly quickly and I will assure you, it is definitely worth a wait. As you move you in line towards the ordering station two things hit you; you get to see a terrific show if the pie makers practicing their artisan craft (always a great show) and the wonderful aromas from their work baking in an imported stone oven. You can pick up a menu as you enter the door, so you'll be ready to order when you make it to the counter. But as they say, seeing is believing so you might change your mind whole making your way along. Enough of the context, onto the main story, the food. As I will summate later, simply awesome! They have great starters in their roasted brussel sprouts, olives and salads. We are particularly enamored with their eggplant side that comes with toasted bread. This dish features perfectly cooked eggplant, mixedbwith their delectable red sauce and topped with just the right amount of mozz. Seasoned perfectly, if you like incredible sicilian food you dont want to miss this dish. Onto the pies. The Neopolitan baked pizzas are all about 12 inches each so if you're hungry one per person is recommended. There are more than a dozen of specialties to choose from or you can design your own. Our favorites include the Margaherita, the Pepperoni, the Diablo and a custom creation featuring onions, mozz, peppers and topped with fresh arugula. While limited they have good beer and wine pairings. And if you just 2 or more pies you get a deep discount on any bottle of vino you choose. To top the meal off they have a nest gelato case to choose from some classic and very delicious options. We are always stuffed so weve only partaken once or twice, but everyone who does, raves ahout it. I will have to say, the pizza at Pupatella is among the best, if not the best in the DMV and perhaps tops in my experience. As alluded to earlier, given the success and quality of Pupatella, they have ventured forward and have opened new stores. A second location in Arlington near Walter Reed drive, one in Richmond and to our delight, one soon to open near our home at the Mosaic District by Dunn Loring. We do worry that they can maintain the exceptionally high quality of their food, but given how great it is, even being slightly off their game will still be an amazing treat. read more

I just ordered for the first time, through Uber eats. I ordered the pepperoni and mushroom pizza and it was delicious! Sadly the Uber driver brought it to me ice cold, but that's what an oven is for. Not my first time here but I liked my last experience even more. We came here on a Saturday night and didn't have to wait to be seated which was good. We got the Frittura sampler for appetizer. Also, the Prosciutto Arugula and the Mushroom white pizza for the main course, all them good as expected. The one lovely thing this time was how friendly staff was. Even though I already had IPA for my drink, once I told them I really like IPAs, they took me to their little bar and served me a cup of IPA just so that I try a different one too which was really nice of them to do that. Let's start by clarifying that this pizzeria specializes in Neapolitan pizza. A lot of people complain that their pizzas are too soft but Neapolitan pizza are supposed to be thin and soft... if you are looking for thin but sturdy, you want NY style pizza so don't bother with coming here because unsurprisingly you will be disappointed. We got the Diavola Pizza and the Capricciosa Pizza. Absolutely loved the Diavola. Flavor was on point and so was the overall cook of the pizza. The Capricciosa pizza wasn't impressive and was borderline soggy. Wouldn't get that again. So I suspect the simpler pizzas with less toppings / drier toppings might taste better here and the more toppings esp wetter toppings might make the pizza softer / soggy. I'd have to go back and try other flavors to see if that's true but with how good Diavola turned out, I would go back and give other pizzas a shot when I'm craving Neapolitan pizza. This is one of the best pizzas I've ever eaten in the United States. My friend got a margherita pizza and I got the tomato artichoke. We split a side salad and an order of the Brussels sprouts. The sale was great, loved the fresh baby tomatoes and the kalamata olives and the dressing was perfectly acidic. I did feel like the Brussels sprouts lacked some salt and acidity. Maybe the addition of prosciutto and/or a balsamic drizzle would have helped. They were crispy and tasty though. But the real star here was the pizza. The outdoor dining patio is lovely and feels very European. You order inside and they will bring your order out to you. I'd love to come back at night when they have the fire pit going. Unbelievably bad experience! I ordered 2 pizzas through GrubHub and only 1 pizza was delivered. The order receipt on the pizza box indicated 2 pizzas. I called the restaurant for explanations and the manager simply explained to me that the other pizza I chose was not available. I was so surprised that no one called me from the restaurant to tell me that and let me choose a different pizza. I asked the manager how it could be even possible that they could allow just one pizza to be delivered if the order was for 2 without considering that someone in the house would remain without food. I have been eager to try this pizzeria ever since it received lots of buzz for being named "best pizza in Virginia" by Food and Wine Magazine. As there are probably thousands of places in Virginia that sell pizza, and the selection was made by just one writer on their staff, I'm guessing not too many pizzas were sampled for this competition! I traveled to their location at 5104 Wilson Blvd. in Arlington to try them out. I arrived around 11:15 am. There were no hours posted outside the property, and the front door was unlocked so I walked in. While there were lots of people working there, I was immediately informed that they didn't open until 11:30 am and that I needed to leave and go wait in my car. I asked if I could at least put in my order, and I was told no. Okay. If you really don't want people coming in before you are opened, (1) post your hours outside; and (2) don't leave the front door open! When I was allowed to go back in the restaurant, I found that the place has a very cute dining room (I was told they have outdoor seating too). There is a big pizza oven right when you walk in, so you can watch your pizza being made if you want! I decided to order the Mimosa pizza, since I love white pizza and the corn topping sounded cool! I also got a Frittura Sampler, since it received such good reviews. Having dined on Virginia pizzas for many decades, I definitely didn't find my pizza to be "Virginia's finest!" It was very mushy, clumpy, and had way too much mozzarella cheese; I found it pretty bland and tasteless. The fritturas were absolutely nothing special either. No nice taste. Not much of a taste at all (I guess that's why they include the red sauce with it). Just a lot of calories!! They bill themselves as legit Italian pizza. I've eaten pizza in Italy and loved it, but maybe I just don't care for this type of "legit" Italian pizza. Unfortunately, my experience was a major disappointment. And having once worked for a magazine, I should have known better than to get lured in by the lofty claim it made of this place. It's a great marketing ploy both for the magazine and the restaurant! From out of town and thought the previous reviews made this place a sure thing. Placed an order online and picked up in the middle of what looked like a rush period. I got the pizza back to my hotel and it was awful! Undercooked, cheese not melted, pepperoni raw and not crispy, and the bottom crust soggy. I tried folding the slice but still inedible and I ended throwing away 90% of the pizza. I should've taken it back but didn't feel like going back out. The crust is unlike any other place around - it's light (not dense), chewy but not hard and charred in just a few places. You don't feel weighed down if you eat the crust here. The sauce is a sweet San Marzano sauce and the Margherita has just the perfect amount of fresh búfalo mozzarella and basil. Fast causal wood-fired pizza spot with a number of unique pies as well as some sides and drinks. We ordered in, including a side salad and two pizzas - one capricciosa and one mushroom. We sat at the table with our drinks and a server brought us out the table set-ups as well as the side salad. The side salad was large, full of a nice mix of greens and veggies, perfect for the three of us to share. The pies came out piping hot. The capricciosa came with sauteed mushrooms, marinated artichokes, prosciutto ham and fresh mozzarella. the mushroom came with Italian cream, sauteed mushrooms, garlic, brie cheese and truffle oil. The mushroom pie had a very rich taste which was almost overpowering. I enjoyed the capricciosa much more as I am a huge fan of artichokes on pizza and they mixed nicely with the saltiness of the cooked prosciutto. The main "ding" against this spot was the undercooked crusts. I love these thin pizzas to have an almost cracker crisp crust and although the "char" was there, the dough was rather limp and lacked chew. Maybe another minute or so in the fire would have done it? The place was hopping and folks seemed to be enjoying their meals, so maybe we just caught a bad timing moment. May have to give them another try sometime. read more

I'm visiting Arlington and had a craving for pizza. I chose this location because of the ratings and number of reviews. Pizza was tasty but came out luke warm, which was odd since I was the only customer visibly in the dining area at the time. It had flavor however, the disappointment was the temperature in the pizza. Hands down the best pizza in Arlington VA! I've been coming here for awhile now but never wrote a review. Today is the day... Parking here sucks but luckily there's a Safeway right across the street with ample parking. The best part is, they don't mind that you use their parking lot at all. The pizza's are priced very well so that's a good thing and eating here wont make you full either. The pizza's are very light and not doughy like other joints. Lets get down to what I usually get. I always get an appetizer and my favorite is the Fried Fresh Mozzarella and my entree is usually the Marghertia Doc with pepperoni. Fried Fresh Mozzarella: These little fried pieces of cheese are to die for! Once you soak them into the marinara sauce you can taste the freshness of the mozzarella. These things are very addicting and a must have here. Margherita Doc with pepperoni: So this pizza consist of Neapolitan buffalo mozzarella, basil and olive oil but of course I need to add some meat so I opt for pepperoni. It's heaven in a slice! I love when the pepperoni is a little crispy as well. The basil with the buffalo mozzarella are perfect together. Ordered take out. Restaurant has parking lot, making it easy to pick up. Quick pick up too. I ordered the Chorizo pizza, and I did enjoy it! At times, I thought the chorizo flavor was a bit overpowering and didn't blend well with the remainder of the pizza but I do think it provided that savory flavor. The red onions were perfectly cooked to be placed on the pizza. The cheese was great quality. The cheese and red onion combo was delicious! The crust was amazing, so fluffy and airy.
