I expected much more from the food, I am Peruvian and I miss my food the presentation is good but it does not look at all like the seasoning of Peruvian food, the service was very good and I loved that they had the Inca Kola in that presentation, we ordered lomo saltado and arroz con mariscos, I was disappointed,The place is small but they have tables outside. Definitely our favorite restaurant in the Bay. Food is fantastic - literally everything on the menu (we've been here twice and it's all yummy). The wine selection is eclectic (small batch wineries) and sooo good. I am obsessed with the Finca Don Carlos Malbec I tried today! Honestly the best part is the wonderful staff. It's clear everyone loves working there & loves great food and wine. It feels more like you've walked into a friend's little get together at home. You don't get food fast (so don't come here expecting you'll get in & out & done). But you get a chance to relax, enjoy slowing down, and have fun. I can't wait to come back for their cooking class! Bottom line: food was decent. Disclaimer: I will rant about the prices. I had the tacu-tacu, and while the mix of seafood is probably where the money's at, it was essentially rice and beans, and a sauce... for $30. The seafood was the same in our cebiche mixto: a combination of white fish, shrimp, and calamari. The ingredients were fresh, but nothing too fancy. I don't mind a high price tag if I feel the value/quality/experience is there, but we were a bit disappointed. Bf had the lomo saltado, which I thought was one of the better ones I've ever had. The beef was exquisite: perfectly seasoned and cooked to a nice medium-well. I also really liked the texture of the fries... Someone please educate me on Peruvian food. Are lomo saltado and tacu-tacu meant to be fancy dishes? This is not the first Peruvian place we've been to that try to elevate their dishes and charges an arm and a leg. This place, I get it, it's in Rockridge. Other than those complaints, the food was mostly good. Service was friendly and I could tell the chefs and staff have a great time working there. Pucquio, how could we have waited so long to try you? We've been fans of Peruvian cuisine ever since we first visited Limon in SF. Then we discovered La Mar, and then Mochica and more. We even traveled to Peru because the fusion with Japanese and Chinese is so amazing, and we wanted to try it in its native country. Pescados Capitales was the highlight of that trip. We drove past Pucquio on College Ave not long after they opened. But we had such good options that we continued to bring out of town visitors to our favorite SF Peruvian restaurants. And then, on a night with no food in the refrigerator, we finally decided to try, calling ahead with no reservation, and snagged the last two seats at the counter for an early dinner. Score. Amazing. Flavors were unique in every dish, presentation was beautiful, and it was not a clone of other restaurants. The portion sizes are small enough that you can and should have appetizers and maybe dessert as well. In other words, perfect if you want to try more things. The prices add up, but it's not outrageous given the high quality. It looked like the chef was also waiting tables and seating diners; service was a little slow. But so worth the wait. Highly recommended. (Note: this is definitely not typical Peruvian food like regular people eat. This is that you can find in Lima at expensive restaurants that are reviewed in foreign newspapers. We had dinner here for my friends 50th Birthday. When we got there 5 min before our reservation, the restaurant was packed, and it looked like we had lost our table to a couple that should have got a room rather than a table. But whatever, we're low drama and we're willing to wait. Boy was it worth the wait! As luck would have it, seats opened up at the kitchen bar so we had a VIP view of the action in the kitchen! Let me tell you - what the chefs do with the simplest of ingredients is nothing short of masterful! First we had the white sangria which, if I was an irresponsible driver would have ended me! So delicious it was hard to have just one. We shared an appetizer of delicious ceviche and chatted away until our entree's came - the birthday girl and I shared the crispy skinned fish - I can't even tell you what my other friend had because we shut up so hard the chef made a comment about how silent we went. Pucquio isn't your run of the mill Peurvian restaurant. Their delicate and complex ceviche is wonderful. It included baby squid, shrimp, onion, soft sweet potato, delicate spices etc. They didn't over-marinate the ceviche which often happens. Their trout ceviche (cebiche) was so refreshing. Keep in mind their yummy grilled octopus are three tiny appetizer size little mouth fulls so expect each order to serve one person at the most. For an unusual salad, their quinoa beet medley was so delicious. I have been here before the Cov19 Shelter in Place and it was awesome, but having to take out my dinner has not changed the quality of the food. Please call in your order verses going online, since there is a charge that the restaurant has to absorb for online orders. read more

Yesterday members of my family and I had a dinner at Pucquio for seven people. When scheduling this event Pucquio provided a set menu as well as a birthday cake for my husband. All of us could not believe how wonderful and excellent the food and accommodations were. It was truly a wonderful experience. We've often traveled to Lima Peru which is a truly an outstanding culinary experience; and I have to say this was comparable. A special note for the cake as the cake was absolutely unbelievable!! Pucquio is hands down our favorite restaurant in the East Bay. The food is outstanding and authentic (we spent 2 weeks in Peru last summer so we can attest). You can't miss the ceviche, chicharrones, lomo saltado, and fried fish. Beyond the food, this is local establishment is run by a husband and wife duo. Chef Carlos and his wife Lisette (who usually serves) are just such gems and keep us coming back time after time for incredible cuisine a feel-good dining experience! Cozy, modern design and friendly staff is the start to a great meal. Go on the early side 5:30 and have the place to yourself on a Friday night. you're gonna love Peruvian food. The traditional cerbiche is excellent. Flavorful and spicy sauce & red onions perfectly complimented the halibut, which was chunk style instead of thinly sliced. The toasted corn nuts were a surprising but good addition that added a roasted flavor. We practically licked the plate! Next up, the Jalea, a fritto of very lightly battered shrimp, calamari and fish resting on roasted yucca root with a fried shrimp head. Visually stunning presentation and taste. Come with a mustard cream but I wanted more of the cerbiche sauce. One small service mishap prevented a five star rating. Our server, who I think was the co-owner, gave us a fried fish dish we discussed but didn't order. She looks so disappointed we kept it. Wonderful presentation with the fish vertical but it was dry and needed more than fried garlic as a sauce. A bit too sophisticated for me. Though it can get pretty cramp I liked the intimate atmosphere and the service was great. It was the food I had some issue with. I ordered octopus, ceviche and two main dishes and the beignets. I really like the ceviche. We had a variety of fishes that night and it was one of the best ceviche i've ever had. The octopus for the price wasn't worth it to me. It was decorated very nicely and had nice garnish and sauce but it was little tiny bites which I feel was way too little for the amount we've paid for. The two main dish: I had a deep fried whole fish at market price with some rice. It was good. The freshly fried and crispy fish was really good. They even help you split it and take off the meat for you. My problem with the fish was that after awhile it got really heavy and fishy tasting. Maybe it was just too much fish for me but after a while I had no will to take another bite. the next dish was a beef and veggies dish with a gravy and potato and rice. That dish was Really good also. The sauce and the beef was flavorful and delicate tasting. I actually liked this a lot better than my fish. But once again, it got kind of heavy and the flavors just diminishes eventually. The beignets were heavy, big and dense. Im used to the french beignets which is light, fluffy with powdered sugar on top. This was a fuse and recipe that they concocted and it was a nice try. It just didn't taste well good as I hope. Attractive menu, delicious food, my favorite bossa nova live music and AMAZING service! One word: fantastic! This was our first time here and we loved it. It is super small and we asked to sit at the bar which was great since we got to see the action in the kitchen. We started ceviche Tiradito Clasico and it was really fresh. We also got the ensalada Del Huerta and this was also refreshing and a good palate cleaner. Then we struggled with what to get for the main dish. We ended up picking the Chita Frita (fried whole fish). It was so soft, juicy and crispy alL at the same time. There weeds prawns and mussels. If you are a fish lover you will like this a lot. We did the side of yuca frita and it was crispy with the a delicious sauce. We got the rafanote for dessert (a cake they make with and ice cream they also make). It was flavorful without being to sweet. I think you can't go wrong at this place. The service was aLso great. excellent Peruvian-style seafood on College Ave in Oakland. they have 6 or so ceviches, a couple which highlight the daily fish (rockfish on the night we came) it's really small, I counted 23 seats, including 5 at the bar overlooking the kitchen, which would be a fun option the crispy fish appetizer and Chupe de Camarones (shrimp in a bisque) were outstanding. the bisque was really flavorful, with a hint of cognac and a little spicy kick...so good there were some comments here about the portion sizes vs. value but we didn't think there was any problem at all. two of us shared one ceviche, two apps and a main and it was plenty. no dessert. without the wine, it would have been $50 pp which is entirely reasonable considering the quality. I'm not sure what the corkage is, but we'd probably bring our own bottle next time if it's not too bad. wine by the glass seemed a little high there have also been comments about the service speed. I went to Pucquio for restaurant week but when we sat down and asked for the restaurant week menu, the manager/server/host mentioned they weren't doing restaurant week because they ran out of the menu. It took 30min to serve us water.... another 15min to come back to get our order and drinks. After over an hour total of wait, I kindly ask the server if he knows how long it will take for the food. He snapped and told us we need to finish our appetizer (which there was barely anything left on the plate) and if we didn't like the wait or the flow of the restaurant, we could go somewhere else. So we got up and left. This is the worst customer service I've ever received. I will not be coming back nor do I recommend this place. read more

Food was good - just a little pricey and service was a bit slow. Went there last saturday to celebrate my mother-in-law's birthday. I didn't expect the place to be this tiny - no wonder they don't take reservation for more than 4 people on opentable. It was full house at 6:30pm. The menu was pretty simple, with sections of cebiches (ceviche), starters, salads, main and sides. To be honest I didn't expect it to be this pricey - cebiche was $20, starter was $18, and main was $28 and up - but I got to say the quality of the seafood was very good. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu - he explained to us each and every main courses on the menu and gave us recommendation. Four of us ended up ordering a mixto cebiche, chi-cha-ron as starter, and a few main to share. The mixto cebiche was very delicious - I love the spot prawn. Chi-cha-ron was a pork belly confit served with purple corn and chicha jus - I wish they serve with the pork skin but it was still good with the corn puree. As for main, we had the steak, shrimp bisque and tacu-tacu. I love the shrimp bisque - it was very unique and tasty. tacu-tacu was a seafood plate and I like the sauce. On the other hand, the steak was alright. It was a bit rough but I did like the taste of it. Overall food was great! I just wished our food came out faster because our dinner lasted for 2.5 hours. This is not fast food - This is for sitting and chatting and sharing plates of tacos - enjoyed the food and chatted with the owner and the chefs. It was a perfect day with perfect company. Finally, a Peruvian restaurant that shows the creative touches Peruvian cuisine in Peru is becoming famous for! Note that this is a very tiny place (used to be Guest Chef) so when it is full, your food will take a while. Be patient! Don't look for the over-used empanadas et. al. Small restaurant, small menu. But flavors are big and presentation is the best we've seen in a Peruvian restaurant in the EBay. Cebiche de Pescado: super spicy, balanced marinade. Spouse LOVED this. Gorgeous presentation! Grilled Pulpitos Parrilla: Baby octopi (with heads!) served with wonderful green sauce - huacatay, perhaps? Anyway, 'sauce' was herb-flavored cooked potatoes, so soft they had broken down. Delicious and unique. Chupa de Camarones: Spouse has tried this seafood soup/stew at every EBay restaurant we've tried. He rated this the best of all of them. Again, stunning presentation and perfectly balanced flavors. Adobo de Chancho: Braised pork with beans. I wasn't overfond of the vinegar used to braise the pork, altho this is common to many cuisines (traditionally tenderized those free-ranging, tough-muscled hogs). But the pork was fork tender, and plump white beans were sensational. Garnish of thin white yam shavings, fried crisp, were a perfect touch. Helados de Temporada. Not sure what tropical fruit was used in this ice cream, but the boozy Pisco-soaked dried fruits that garnished the scoops were wonderful - we could have eaten a bowlful of them (but wouldn't have been able to drive home afterwards, LOL). We rate this one of the top Peruvian restaurants we've tried, and we're coming back for that fried fish which one reviewer said was sensational. Definitely worth returning! read more

I was born and raised in Peru and have tried for many years to find a Peruvian restaurant. This is by far the best in the Bay Area. The food is amazing and goes to show why Lima became a gastronomic destination. To top it off, the owners are incredibly sweet and made me feel right at home when I visited. I am very glad to find out that they are doing take-out and delivery during the pandemic. My food arrived fresh to my door which is a lot to say when you order ceviche. An overall pleasant experience! We dropped by for dinner on a rainy evening. Our server was welcoming and sat us quickly. It's a small cozy space--you'll get to see the action in the kitchen. You'll also cozy up with the party to either side of you because of the small size of the space. It does contribute to a homey feeling. We started with the Pan American Asian Cebiche ($20). It was so fresh--the daikon, sesame, and peanuts added a whole lot of fun and refreshing flavor to the fish. Next we had the Lomo Saltado ($30) and the Chupe Bamba de Camarones ($30). The beef in the Lomo Saltado was rich in flavor and so tender and moist. The char was just how I like it as well. The Chupe was a star. The whole dish felt like it was a tribute to shrimp. I felt like the sauce, rice, and potatoes were infused with huge shrimp flavor. Definitely rich--to the point that I couldn't finish it after about 3/4 in. It felt too shrimpy and I got tired of the flavor after that. I'd recommend stopping by the next time you're craving seafood.
