I worked with a different moving company 2 years ago that left me scarred for life with how rude and unprofessional they were. I ended up having to finish the job myself (moving my giant couch up four flights of stairs), so when I knew I was moving again, I did my due diligence and sought out a few quotes. Another company quoted me almost $800 and required a 3 hour minimum for the job!! $800 seemed steep and I knew the job wouldn't take that long... Along came Bookstore Movers who quoted me a reasonable $470 minimum for two hours of work and a maximum of $680 for 3.5 hours of work (price breakdown: $140 per hour with 2 hour min. plus a $190 truck fee). I received a quote within a few hours of requesting it. There was no deposit required and the date was booked. I received detailed emails leading up to the move about FAQs, tips for a seamless move, and the names of my crew including contact info for the crew lead. Abdul (crew lead), Niiwayo "Y.O", and Milly were SO fast and friendly. They wrapped every single item with care in drop cloths and got to moving immediately. Despite the 90 degree heat and a total of five flights of stairs, the job was finished in 2 hours. I was SO impressed. I was so traumatized by my last move that I literally had to walk away while they moved the couch in but before I knew it, I got a text from my boyfriend telling me they had fit it through the door and our living room was all set up. I was so relieved and happy to work with them. If and when we move again, (hopefully not anytime soon, lol), I will 100% be contacting Bookstore Movers... and you should too!

The movers were amazing and the cost for them to pick it up was MUCH lower than what it would have cost us to hire movers and have them put everything in storage. One thing that I was not entirely prepared for was providing a comprehensive list of every item and box size prior to pick up. I over estimated the space we would need (to be safe) and they adjusted the monthly fee down after they stored everything because my items didn't take up as much space as I inputted. So the less items you store, the lower the monthly rate, which I've found to be very reasonable and fair. The only catch is that when you need your items delivered, the delivery fees can be very high ($20-40+) depending on how far advance you schedule the delivery. If you use their bins and end up emptying them out at home, they will charge $30 to pick up the bin(s) or charge $15 per bin that you decide to keep. This is how they make their money. MakeSpace is best for items you want to keep in long-term storage but not ideal if for items you need regularly.

All they have to do is provide you with a 30 day notice, as if you could do anything about it. As an example, we rented our storage unit one year ago at a rate of $99. Within 6 months they raised it to $178. Just received a new bill (with no 30 day notice) that they increased it to $206. Such as dishonest approach. I've rented with other extraspace locations such as the one in DC on Taylor Street and never faced this issue. Avoid at all costs so you don't get stuck paying to move your stuff in 6 or 12 months to another location.

I had never experienced anything like this before in my life and had I not had a rented truck (with a deadline I couldn't extend) with my belongings already with me I would not have rented at this facility. For full disclosure, I did file a complaint with Cube Smart and the District Manager called me and apologized for my experience and said he would "address it with the manager of the store" and for me to call him should I have any additional issues. For the price and the plethora of other storage facilities available, I would not recommend this place because of the disrespect you may experience when trying to pay for your unit or resolve any other problems.

Grasshopper Movers is HANDS DOWN the best moving company I've worked with. Maybe because they are local and small, or maybe because they're just committed to providing the best service possible. EVERY single person I dealt with at Grasshopper has been customer focused and professional. They are clearly a company that is focused on meeting customer needs versus up-selling or lengthening the process. I would have even considered myself a not ideal client in that I contacted Grasshopper last minute and used them for storage far longer than anticipated AND asked for delivery and received it within 2 days of the request (meaning they didn't get to milk more money out of us just because they could.). DC is filled with lots of competition and these folks are just old fashioned in their approach - they have pride in their work. Finally, they also had the best price based on my extensive research (which I do professionally). If only they provided services outside of moving and storage - housekeeping? mobile phone service? Wifi & cable TV? OK, now I jest, but you get my point. Call them and sleep well. (FYI: I rarely write these because I seem to not have time, but I was motivated because of how awesome they all were to me - it's the least I could do.)

AVOID AT ALL COSTS…read more I had my items at this storage unit for two years. ALL of my belongings. I paid for the Public Storage/Orange Door insurance to make sure I was covered. My storage unit was overrun by mice who came from a nearby unit, bringing all sorts of weird food debris with them, along with the resulting excrement and urine, and ruined EVERYTHING IN MY UNIT. My furniture, my kitchen items, my clothing... unless it was in an enclosed PLASTIC tote with a lid, it was ruined. Many THOUSANDS of dollars worth of stuff. THE INSURANCE WAS USELESS. For VERMIN issues it pays out only $250. TOTAL!!!! Photo of my custom-made $3300 couch, covered in mouse pee/crap, that went to the dump. The manager of the location was also exceptionally rude, and unhelpful. She was a joke. (The other employee was very nice but I barely dealt with him.)

We signed a paper contract when they dropped off the unit, although I don't really remember signing a contract. But then 3.5 years later, they sent us a digital contract and asked us to sign it. But because I don't remember the paper contract, I refused to sign the digital contract. Even though we were paying every month on time for the last four years, they refused to give us one more month with the unit because we refused to sign the contract. Additionally, after returning the unit, my credit card was charged two months in a row, and I had to call the company to get a refund on my credit card. I would recommend the business because the delivery and pickup of the unit was simple. But everything else involved with renting this unit, I don't recommend.
