I was reluctant to try this service but so far it's been fantastic. We needed most of our stuff to be stored for several months for a home renovation. They picked it up and it's currently being stored without issue. The movers were amazing and the cost for them to pick it up was MUCH lower than what it would have cost us to hire movers and have them put everything in storage. One thing that I was not entirely prepared for was providing a comprehensive list of every item and box size prior to pick up. I over estimated the space we would need (to be safe) and they adjusted the monthly fee down after they stored everything because my items didn't take up as much space as I inputted. I've been using MakeSpace for over 2 years and I absolutely love the concept. They come pick up your items, store them, and charge you for only the space you need. So the less items you store, the lower the monthly rate, which I've found to be very reasonable and fair. The only catch is that when you need your items delivered, the delivery fees can be very high ($20-40+) depending on how far advance you schedule the delivery. If you use their bins and end up emptying them out at home, they will charge $30 to pick up the bin(s) or charge $15 per bin that you decide to keep. This is how they make their money. MakeSpace is best for items you want to keep in long-term storage but not ideal if for items you need regularly. read more

Updated: After a lot of contacts and bother, we did get a payment for the parts they lost and related expenses. Awful experience. They lost some of the bed parts they had taken apart. It was a major hassle to find replacements. They had told us they would re-assemble it, but when it came time to arrange the move-in they said they don't. We tried to submit a claim for the lost parts and hiring a person a second time to re-assemble the bed but they made the process so difficult of course it's not worth getting the hundred bucks we lost back. read more

I was moving from Los Angeles to Atlanta. Not knowing where I was going to live in Atlanta, I decided to rent a furnished sublet for a couple of months in Atlanta to help me get a lay of the land. I thought that it would be best if I moved out of my apartment in LA, put my stuff in storage and then find a mover to get said stuff and bring it to me once I found an apartment. Simple enough. When I made my appointment with MakeSpace, I was told that there would be three people on the truck for the move out. There was only two. Then, when I got my first invoice they tried to change my plan from $209 a month to $289 a month without cause. I told them that my stuff came in under 400 cubic feet and therefore I should only be charged $209 a month. They changed it back. Then, I got an email asking me if I would like to spend money on extra insurance? But if not, then not to worry, because my items are fully covered anyways. I declined the "extra" insurance. Like "extra" insurance was going to protect my items, in storage, any further than the insurance that I already had? I found an apartment in Atlanta and now it's time to get my stuff, so I need an address right? I thought that my items were in Los Angeles. They weren't. My items are in Ontario, which is forty miles east of LA. This is not what MakeSpace advertises. They say that they are out of Los Angeles, but in fact they are out of Ontario, and trying to contact MakeSpace to get the actual address proved to be difficult and time consuming. Also, you have to contact MakeSpace a week before your pick up so that they can have your items ready for you to pick up. So I did. I had a total of 56 items. I told MakeSpace to only stage 53 items and to leave these other three items in storage. They said ok. I gave MakeSpace two possible pick up dates, and that I wouldn't know the exact date until the moving company contacted me. They said no problem. We'll have your items ready for pick up on both dates. I found out from the moving company that the pick up date was going to be the second of the two dates, which, once I found out, I informed MakeSpace of said date. Well, since I "missed" the first pick up date, MakeSpace charged me $100, and then a couple of hours later refunded me the money back. Just another innocent way of harassment. Now the moving company has arrived and they can't find the storage unit. Apparently, it's among a bunch of other giant buildings that aren't labeled. The storage unit for MakeSpace doesn't say MakeSpace on it, so navigating which storage unit it theirs is impossible. So my guy had to get out of his truck, walk around and ask around until he finally found the storage unit. Once he loaded my items, he calls me to tell me that I'm 85 cubic feet over the initial estimate. I told him that that's not possible, because I had three items removed, so the total count should only be 53 items, which would lower my cubic feet total. He said that there were 56 items staged and that they were already placed on the truck. To remove the items was an additional $400 and to ship the items was going to cost me $416.50. What do I want to do? Ship them I said, and I'll deal with it on my end. I contacted MakeSpace and they apologized for the error. I told them that it was going to cost me an additional $416.50 and that they should pay for it since it was their error. They didn't contact me back about this issue, but they did send me a follow-up email asking me to rate their service. I gave them zero stars and told them that they sucked. A few days later I received another follow-up email asking me to rate their service again. I didn't reply. MakeSpace lies. MakeSpace takes no responsibility and MakeSpace will rip you off. Having to move out of your home when you didn't plan on it can be a very stressful and sad experience. And when the moving and storage people come by for your stuff, how they work and relate to you can make a big difference. Earlier today, I was fortunate to have one of the most professional moving teams I've ever encountered show up at my door. Not only did they know how to treat my stuff -- wrapping and protecting everything with incredible efficiency. I think they handled my furniture and belongings better than I ever have. But more importantly, they were cheerful, happy, and a pleasure to be around. The team could sense I was not pleased with leaving my home and seemed to work extra hard at being positive and upbeat. However, they didn't waste time. They got the whole thing done in 1 hour and 59 minutes. Amazing. The team leader was also a real pro. His name was Dijon Thomas. And he ran his crew the way an expert conductor directs his orchestra. If MakeSpace has more like him on the payroll, they're certainly a company to watch. I could not recommend these folks more if you live in the DC/Beltway area. Quality work, efficient, professional attitude, and reasonably priced. You can't really appreciate your movers until you unpack. In my case, it was four years after they packed my belongings and I put them in storage. Everything was wrapped and packed so conscientiously, and all of my goods were intact. Rugs, mattresses, glassware ... all good. Very pleased. read more

First of all, I've moved a lot. Short distance, long distance, all of it. I'd had good experiences with Flat Rate until my last move and it was so abysmal I had to hunt for a new mover, and this time I additionally need long-term storage. So far, so good. Just completed a pickup of my 2-floor apartment. Because I'm unsure my eventual destination, I did not use the MakeSpace crates, which was a bummer as I love moving with crates. I had a great experience when I made the appointment and when I had trouble logging into my account the first time. The team texted me a half hour before they arrived, at 7.45am, and arrived by 8.15am. I'll say this, I should have been warned in advance that they are no joke because an army of men swarmed my apartment and had the place cleared out in two hours. I have a lot of really heavy, and fragile, furniture, so was pleased they wrapped everything and took care getting it out. I was initially given an estimate for a 10'x20' storage unit - we'll see what the warehouse guys come back with and I'll update when I have additional opinions. Aside from their professionalism and efficiency, I really like that they photographed all of my furniture before it was wrapped, barcode everything, and that I'll be able to see it in the app in a few days. June 2018: Just had my first delivery of a few items. The team texted me in advance of arrival and dropped everything off within five minutes. Even better, you can tip in the app. The only issue was that one of my large boxes was damaged - seemed it was on the bottom of a stack and had begun to tear. Most of my boxes are heavy duty, but this one was not. Otherwise, all is well. I especially liked that, prior to delivery, I was able to chat with someone to determine what I needed to remove to drop down a price tier. Avoid MakeSpace. It sounds convenient and affordable - but don't take a chance with your belongings. It is absolutely appalling that our things were so disregarded - nearly every piece of furniture we stored has some degree of damage, including some with significant damage. Boxes were crushed, a king sized mattress is lost, a table has large chunks of wood "cut" out, our tufted headboard looks like it has been folded in half. There were rat droppings in two of our boxes. In the end, MakeSpace will not take responsibility or be liable for the damage to your items - choose and store wisely. The picking up of our items was a fine experience. The team was friendly and careful with the items. I'll update this review with more details but here are several of the problems we've had now that are definitely worthy of a *1 star review*. 1. They changed the rate, just as other reviews have stated. Classic bait and switch. We were told based on the items that a medium was the correct size. We were even given 5 green boxes to use to make up the difference. However, we got a charge on the credit card for the large space with no mention of why or explanation for the change. 2. We called to discuss the higher charge, but were hung up on. We could not get the representatives name after repeated attempts. 3. We finally got an e-mail to say that after a remeasure (which took over a week) our stuff needed the larger size and that we would receive a credit on our next bill. 4. The guys who did the pickup said that if we gave them a 5 star yelp review we'd get a $25 discount. This discount also did not come, so I was suckered into writing a great review. I'm told it will be "on the next bill", but I can't be certain. 5. On the day of delivery they seriously scuffed up our brand new walls and put dents in our new ceilings. *This is unacceptable* 6. They did not unwrap or assemble the furniture. They simply dropped it off and darted out the door. This is going to cost us in repairs. This is especially disappointing because this is a brand new house that we just moved into last week and now we have scars throughout that we watched MakeSpace cause. We had 2 other movers last week that brought the majority of our other stuff into the house, including a piano and a bed with a box spring. They did not damage our property at all. Makespace is classic bait and switch that is costing us even more money than we budgeted and has caused damage to my home. I called MakeSpace and spoke with Santiago. He can only offer to "pay for the damage", but now I have to find a contractor and get it all repaired myself. He is also going to ask the team if they caused the damage. Any payment he noted would be in the form of a credit on our future MakeSpace invoices, which is also unbelievable. And this is only if they believe their team! Great service, the movers are legit. Show up on time and dropped off on time. If you consider the costs of hiring movers both ways, and paying for storage, etc. make space isn't THAT much more expensive. But you pay a premium. We had a wonderful experience with Make Space. We had some renovations done and needed to store a bunch of baby supplies - we were able to get on the schedule quickly, they provided a ton of supplies to make packing easy and came promptly to pick everything up. Now that our reno is complete they just did the drop off and it was just as seamless. Richard Washington and Donnie Joseph we're prompt, polite, masked and swift in lugging all our stuff up a long set of exterior stairs to our house. They were very conscious of our things and handled everything with care. Avoid this company at all costs. The windows of arrival they offer are completely meaningless and their customer service is completely useless. They missed my first pickup window by two hours with no contact, I had to call them to get an update and to reschedule since I had to get back to work. They said the next available window wasn't for another ten days which sucked but I had no choice. Now it is that day and they are currently 4 hours beyond the window they were supposed to arrive. Again I have to do all the contacting to get updates. Only use makespace if you have no respect for your own time because they won't respect it. read more

I've had an overall very positive experience with makespace. I've had a variety of things stored with them for over a year now, with the volume constantly changing. The staff and professionals are extremely organized, knowledgeable and friendly. The app is super easy to use and to schedule drop offs and pick ups and they take painstaking care to wrap and store items. They also offer free plastic bins (will even drop them off to you) that are extremely durable for storage so that you don't have to worry about buying boxes or the security of your items. They also take pictures of every single item they store so you can pick the picture of the item you'd like picked back up. Also as you add/remove items from your storage they automatically resize your unit and charge you accordingly. My only qualms are the pricing structure did change (but with forewarning and also probably over a year after I started with them). Previously drop offs were free, but even know the pricing is very reasonable ($20 minimum based upon how far in advance you book, NOT the number of items you request). Also, the pictures are an excellent touch, but since most are taken back at the warehouse and they do such a good job of wrapping things up, it can be impossible to determine whats what when you are trying to find things. Similar issue with labeling of the bins/taking pictures of closed bins instead of open ones. All in all, its an excellent business model and a company run with a lot of integrity. I wish them luck! Update: It looks like they are now taking pictures of items before the wrap them up. Great improvement! read more

The staffer that set up my initial pick up was so personable and good at explaining things. Then, Meghan did a amazing job calming my fears the day before pick up. This is the best self storage company in DC hands down. I have moved a LOT over the last 10 years and makespace is definitely the best company I've worked with. The team members that came to my apartment to wrap and move and store furniture were rockstars. Communication was great from the very start. I love that you can call and speak to an actual person AND you get regular text and email updates alerting you to the status of your appointment and where your items are in transit. The green bins make it incredibly easy to pack things up and since they fit into each other, it's a much more efficient use of space. You can easily label everything (or the moving crew will help with the individual pieces of furniture) and if you want single items delivered down the line, it's as easy as clicking through in the app and saying what you need from the warehouse. There rates are competitive with other local moving and storage companies (I looked at every other local option) but I feel like you get a lot more for the price: Excellent customer service, provided green bins, goodwill pickup/drop off, and easy online tracking. I will definitely use makespace in the future and can't recommend them highly enough. read more

So far, so good. I moved on November 29th and although my experience won't be complete until I remove my stuff from storage seven months from now, so far it has been excellent. The guys came on time with extra boxes and tape and were ready to pack up the things that I had not been able to (the TV, for instance). They loaded up everything and left me in an empty apartment. I was billed a rate a good bit higher than what I was quoted, apparently because their program automatically bumps you up to the next higher rate even if your required space is only slightly more than planned. One e-mail and they bumped it back down to my quoted rate. Great customer service. I'll revise this review, if necessary, once I pick up my stuff in June. read more

Fantastic concept--and logistically an extremely well-run operation. They find out what your needs are / how much you need to store; they drop off free (very clean) bins that you pack up yourself; and then they send professional movers to pick it all up--and they drop it back off to you when you're ready. We live in a small space and are having our basement renovated, so in the interim, we needed to get everything out and stored elsewhere--this was the perfect solution. A three-month minimum rental, but pricing is really fair and less than we would have paid to move it all ourselves (and so much less hassle). Only gripe was some damage to a wall when the movers got an admittedly bulky chair up out of the basement, but otherwise this has been a painless and very pleasant experience so far. I'll do an updated review once we've gotten everything back, but so far, I love these guys! read more

We love makespace! We use them weekly for our interior design office. It's so convenient to be able to book appointments through the app and track where the team is through the GPS function. We work with Dijon a lot and he is great. They've been very accommodating when we need something last minute, they work hard to help us out, and once even gave me a courtesy discount when I was almost in tears trying to get two chairs from them ASAP. read more

Short story: everything, in the beginning, was done very well, the back-end / customer service experience has been a nightmare! Spend a few extra dollar per month and go with another company with better customer service! Long story: They arrived a little late, but did the amount of work they were supposed to (despite being a little slow). Either way, it worked out nicely. The scheduling process and the front-end pick up process went very smoothly. That being noted, trying to get things delivered and especially trying to deal with customer service is a horrid nightmare. There are barely any responses to my emails, and they're ultimately holding my storage hostage (likely with an attempt to wait until the next month to charge people for an extra month of storage they don't really need). They keep the address of where your stuff is actually being stored for some shady reason (there is no excuse, keeping this information private isn't protecting you, it's hiding things from you). Ultimately, after dealing with these guys I would suggest spending a bit more of a premium and choosing a company with a better reputation for customer service. This company is just NOT up to PAR. read more

I stored stuff with MakeSpace for about 6 months while I was between apartments. First off, the pick up back in August was efficient and went so smoothly! They were on time, courteous, and very efficiently and carefully packed all my belongings. Then, I moved into DC and had all my stuff delivered to my apartment, the basement of a row house. Tiny entrance and narrow hallways - but Rob, Melvin, and Marc were able to get my couch in safely even when it seemed like it was a lost cause! Remember to tip on the app right away - I just discovered that the ability disappears after a certain time frame, and since I didn't yet have wifi in my apartment I didn't know until it was too late! read more

I think I'm in love. When my organization moved offices to a space where on-site storage was not offered we ended up with a lot of "junk" in our new office. The space was cluttered and distracting. No one was willing to offer any alternatives and "higher-ups" didn't seem motivated to find a new home for this "junk". Once I heard about MakeSpace, I was intrigued. This company is incredible! I had 10 green bins delivered, and that went smoothly, and the bins are a huge added bonus! Yesterday was my first pickup with MakeSpace and I was SO impressed with the service. The two men (Mike and Edgar, from the Washington DC office) were on time, friendly, and got everything wrapped carefully and into the truck in 1 hour! I was so impressed. Taking pics, wrapping and labeling items and moving it out. I had items for a 12x15 unit and they were in and out in 1 hour 30 mins, start to finish!!
