I've used this Public Storage location in Colma and overall had a solid experience. The facility did look clean, organized, and easy to access, which made moving items in and out much easier. They also provide carts, which was a big help. The overall process was straightforward with no confusion--just a place that does what it's supposed to do. A couple things to keep in mind: pricing can increase over time, so it may not stay at the initial rate if you're storing long-term. I also noticed the front desk wasn't always staffed during posted hours, which could be inconvenient if you need assistance. There is a bathroom on site, but it wasn't available for customer use. Unit broken into and near all possessions stolen; lock replaced with new public storage lock. Told it happens often. No cameras in any hallway. No help and no recourse. We rented a 10' by 10' storage on the second floor, for about four years. Over the years, the elevator didn't work at times. We asked about getting a reduced rate because of it, they said no. However, our rent was increased over 8% yearly. We finally decided that we were paying too much for a storage that was too big for us. We moved our stuff out over multiple days. Again, we ran into elevator issues, very frustrating. There are two carts in the building, if you can find them. Some people just leave them on the upper floor. You have to look for them at times. Our storage had no insulation. It smelled damp all the time. All our items had this weird damp smell, even those in boxes. Some unprotected posters we had got 'water stains(?).' Not sure if there was some moisture that came from ceiling. Another issue about this location, is the difficult access from El Camino. The driveway is narrow and almost hidden, because of the curve in El Camino Real. We always had to be careful when exiting back onto El Camino Real. In the future, we will make sure to seal textiles in airtight containers. I loathe this company. They are in business to screw people out of as much money as they possibly can. The rent for my small 5'x5' unit has risen from $120 to $220 in barely two years. The website is a train wreck. They make it exceedingly difficult to access a live person in customer service. Supposedly you can cancel ins through the website but I have tried multiple times and can never succeed. I hate them. read more

Due to a family medical situation, I needed to relocate away from the Bay Area for a while. Couldn't afford to leave my home unoccupied, but before I can rent it out I needed to clean it out. I did my best at selling the furniture and appliances, but there was still a bunch of stuff that I couldn't easily let go or bring with me overseas. I resorted to renting a storage unit for an extended period of time. Seeing that one was available near home, I just went with it. Price seemed reasonable - but this being the Bay Area it sure wasn't cheap. The $1 first month offer was a nice gesture but didn't do much for my long-term needs. Gal who initially helped me out with the sign up was very nice. The storage facilities seemed ok as well. But I had to make several trips since I was emptying my entire home, and juggling that with work and other errands, I thought this place's hours were rather limiting. One time I took a half day off work to get the move going, arrived here at 9:30 (the start of their business hours) sharp, and nobody was there yet! Dealing with that was frustrating. A few days later I saw some dirty stuff in the corner of the storage space. Didn't think much of it. Now I'm reading some Yelp reviews and suppose that might have been rat droppings. Ew. I really wish I could get a 1-star review. But I have to give some credit for the first encounter. My husband and my parents were looking for a storage in the area so that we could put some of the stuff in storage as our home is going through remodeling process. The set up process was not bad. We got a spot that was close to the elevator and the stair. But today when my husband and I went back to the storage to drop off our stuff, during the access hour at 2:45 PM, no one WAS IN THE OFFICE. There was a gentleman eating his sandwich inside his car that was parked outside of the office. My husband just wanted to use the trolley that was chained at the first floor. So my husband asked the gentleman if he worked there - and that guy said no! Oh, surprise, by 3PM, I saw that dude left his white car and walked back to the rental office right after a young lady (who I think was the manager?) was back from lunch and it appeared that guy actually worked in the office. I've used other storage companies and I was shocked to see that no one was in the office at all during the access hour. Honestly I would have gone to somewhere else but my parents chose this place because of the promotion deal. Should I know the rental office is run this way, I definitely would have gone somewhere else. So unless you only have to move your stuff into the storage all at once and take it out at once; if you are looking for a storage place where you can move your stuff in several rounds - go SOMEWHERE ELSE because who know if anyone is around to unlock the trolley. Alternative - you better find a hunk to carry your stuff. Being a 9-month pregnant woman, I was not happy about it. Luckily my husband was a strong guy so he just moved everything at the end but it was a very frustrating moment. They are good at getting your business but expect the quality of your experience after the initiation will go down hill. Note to management: please either set up a protocol so that the trolley can be accessed by the renter by making sure at least 1 personnel who has the access/authority to do so is at the office during the access or re-enforce such protocol. Alternative, figure out a different way to let the renter to use the trolley - not everyone has a hunk or a team of army to move things around! read more

Don't use public storage! The units have mice and if you move out on the first of the month you are still charged for a full month. Other storage facilities pro-rate. DONT SIGN AN AGREEMENT WITH PUBLIC STORAGE! They suck and are scandalous. Manager is hardly ever there so don't bother. read more

Units on the "first floor" are actually up a l flight of stairs. If you are lucky the single elevator will be working. In my case I had to haul everything up the stairs, risking serious injury. The management gave me no compensation for this, and instead charged me for a lock I never asked for and refused to return it. Thanks guys. read more

My parents were putting their house up for sale and needed to vacate within a week to have it remodeled and staged. Needless to say, they accumulated a ton of crap over the past 20+ years, and they needed a place to store it-- fast. Public Storage was perfect for our needs, and our property manager Dominque's customer service was icing on the cake. She was extremely knowledgeable and patiently explained all of the important rental details to my dad, who has a hearing disability. We ran into two major obstacles while we were renting the unit, and each time, Dominique calmly and thoughtfully explained our options. Her leadership and resourcefulness put us at ease in spite of the initial panic we felt stumbling upon these obstacles. Thank you, Dominique, for being so helpful and amazing to work with! YES!! YES!! YES!! Ugh, I've become one of THOSE people who have too much stuff & needed storage - after such a long time resisting doing so, I finally started checking out places. The location of this facility worked the best for me. I called and made an appointment at a general Public Storage number. The man was helpful and gave us all the options which was great since I've never done this before. Hubby & I arrived at our appointed time and met with the facility manager, Dominique. Wow, did she have it going on - so professional, covered every single thing with such clarity yet not robotic - she actually made it an enjoyable experience - Seriously renting a storage unit could be enjoyable? Yep. Hubby & I decided to go with a larger unit once there as the 5x5 are approximate dimensions and hubby being the perfectionist he is, had everything measure out to the 18th degree. While he was a bit disappointed to need a larger one, I was happy because that meant I could store a few other items he didn't know about! Win/win/win! And a HUGE plus - there was a promo going on charging only $1 for the first month's rent! How great is that?! But outside of the location & promo - the best thing was leaving there knowing my things were secure having dealt with Dominique & knowing she has things covered! read more

public storage sucks as a rule, they have a corporate way about them. They will treat customers however they want to and get away with it, there is little that can be done. They recently raised my rent on one of my units by 80 dollars. There was no explanation given, no calls returned to me (at the corporate level. The onsite people there are pretty good about returning calls). The longer one stays at public storage, the more they raise the rent! There is zero customer appreciation for loyal customers (3 and a half years for me) and no discount or break when renting multiple units. You are penalized for remaining a loyal customer with punishment being rent increases at random intervals with no explanation at all. I will say though at 1900 el camino real facility, the on site manager Dominique is outstanding, she is smart, she is friendly and she is as helpful as she can be although she is limited somewhat as to what she can do for the customers by the corporate managers that oversee her. If she was not the manager there i know i would not have rented two of the biggest units they had for 3 and a half years, i would have been gone long before. i felt that my things were pretty safe there. So i vote five stars strictly for Dominique, not for public storage, she made it a good place. read more

This has been such a horrible experience. (1) The elevator has been broken for 1+ months. I can't even move things in or out of my storage unit. (2) My unit does not have a light and they won't replace it. (3) THEY INCREASED THE COST PER MONTH BY $40 A MONTH because of rising real estate cost. They said that they will still focus on superior customer service, but I can't reach anyone to complain about the cost. (4) Rarely there is someone at the office to help you out BEWARE. read more

I was able to obtain a reasonably priced indoor ground floor unit immediately, and was given the facility tour and all necessary information by Chris. There were carts carts available to schlep our boxes and furniture to the unit, locks, and etc., and I was able to add the friends helping me to the authorized access list. Had a miscommunication with someone at this location about refund money if moving stuff out of storage in middle of the month. When I actually came to take items out of storage unit for good, I spoke with Seana whom was very patient and understanding. She was also very helpful in explaining the situation and helping me know what all I can write off in my taxes for this expensive move to help make up for money lost in the miscommunication with now "former" employee I spoke with previously. My experience with this property has been flawless. Dominique assisted me throughout the entire rental process from the time I moved in six months ago to my move out today (Nov '15). Dominique has always been a friendly professional and I'm thankful that she has been there each time I have needed assistance. On day one she made time to give the unit an additional cleaning as needed. She let me know yesterday that I could get a last receipt from the Sunday manager on duty to finalize my move out, but she ended up being there when the company needed her to fill in! I'm in the process of still looking for a new place and needed a storage for just one month until I find somewhere new. I called Public Storage in the morning and told them my situation and the friendly lady over the phone (forgot her name) was able to get me a deal for $23 for the month. She made me a reservation to come in during my lunch hour the same day. I'm giving them 4 stars only because I specifically asked her if it was going to be that amount out the door and she said yes, but when I got there it was actually $51. It's still a good deal, but I like knowing of all the fees from the beginning. So I came in during lunch and the manager Seana assisted me.
