Two years ago my sister initiated storage options for my mothers belongings after going into a nursing home. After my mothers passing on the 28th we needed to remove the items immediately to avoid paying another month of rent. When I opened the storage unit to remove the belongings, it was covered with rat feces and rat urine. The woman I initially encountered was one of many managers. She was extremely rude and un-willing to listen to my horrific situation. She informed me that the storage unit was insured and I should call them to file claim and reminded me a number of times I had to pay a full month of rent because today was the 2nd of the month and the storage was still in use. She could not care less about my complaint about the rats. I tried to explain to her that I attempted to remove all the belongings out of the storage unit on the 29th but was unsuccessful because I needed to take precautions and acquire gloves and plastic garbage bags to protect myself from the rat feces/urine. Rat feces carry a number of potentially fatal diseases that can spread to humans usually by hand to mouth contact. You could clearly see where the rats came in from. These units are made from wood and rats can easily fit through small holes and tight spaces because their bodies are flexible. Public storage requires customers to purchase insurance. In order to file an insurance claim you are required to have receipts for proof of purchase, plus you pay $100 deductible. I think they try their hardest to deter customers from filing claims. I ended up speaking with a GM. He was kind, apologetic, empathetic, and sympathetic to the situation and my mothers passing. I am not telling you to never use Public Storage but I will suggest a newer location than 10020 Martin Luther King Jr Way S, 98118. read more

They raise the rent every 6 months or so, they have cameras but can not access the recordings. My unit was broke into, with about 3K worth stolen. All they could say is sorry, call the police. The officer told me it happens frequently there. Not safe read more

I have had nothing but GREAT service from this Public Storage. As a small business owner in need of storage space, and a lot of it, this Public Storage has been my saving grace! Affordable and so convenient. I honestly believe that I owe part of the success of the growth of my business to the great staff at this location. They have understood my needs and bent over backwards to help me grow my business. I get multiple deliveries here a week and at times it could be overwhelming, but the staff is so understanding and helpful. Honestly, I cannot say enough good about my experience here. Ignoring my "online checkout date", Public Storage continued to charge me rent on the space. $1000+ worth of rent. Tried to get them to invoice me for "dump fees", no response. They then charged me $125 to sell what was left in the space, which they got $250 via auction and sent me a final bill of approx $860 which I have paid. I have no problem paying my bills and do so gladly. I made the decision to not stop by your office on my way out and wouldn't work with me when I repeatedly requested to be invoiced. You took 2+ months to close the account, and you rung the last drop of blood from this turnip. You have been paid in full and I will reimburse myself by pounding out negative reviews of your "business". Maybe you could spend some of the money I gave you to get rid of the rodents running around defecating in your storage units? read more

Rory made it quick and easy to get a storage unit. Within 30 minutes, I was move-in ready so that's something I can dig!

I rented the first storage space over a year ago and needed to downsize. I went to the office and Areil greeted and met me with a smile and a willingness to help me find what would suit my needs. She was so customer service oriented, helped me sum up what space I would require and all with a smile! When we got back to the office Ashley, the property manager who had overheard my requests, asked if we found what I wanted. I thought I did but found that and that I wouldn't save as much as I hoped. She got involved in an effort to find a good solution and suggested a particular unit, which would be more affordable. We visited that unit and yes, it did suit my needs for space and price. They were so committed to helping me find what I wanted. It was a genuine pleasure to work with these two women!! Great job! read more

It is nice facility but they do not disclose all the fees and charges until the day you sign the lease. I called both the national number and the facility to confirm the rate ($1 for the first month + $22 administrative fee). However when I signed my lease they added $16.99 for the lock (you have to use their lock, you can not get your own) and $8/month for mandatory insurance. Clearly I can not use the storage unit without a lock so they should have told me about this on the phone. Also the $8/month insurance will add to $96 over a year which to me is real money and I should have been told about. I basically had no choice but to sign since I was there with a truck full of boxes and did not have time to make other arrangements read more

I've had rental spaces off and on at the MLK location for the past 20 plus years. They are by far the best staff and facility I have used in the Seattle area. The staff is always up-front about admin fees, mandatory insurance and special lock/keys needed for each rental. I feel those fees are worth the excellent service and responsiveness to miscellaneous problems they've helped me with over the years. Bravo! read more

BAIT AND SWITCH ON THE HOURS AND PRICING that sounded good over the phone but once you start to sign papers the price does not reflect the same as the Internet or phone. BUT! that is not my main complaint ...The hours when I moved in were perfect and I told them hours was the selling point for me to make such a big move to put my thing in their storage. I was going to go some place else for less money but the hours sold me. I could keep moving until 9 pm coming in and be out by 10 pm and I could come as early as 6 am perfect for someone like me. For the first months I used those hours to come and go with the heavy Seattle traffic. Then Public Storage they switched from 9:30 Am entry and be out by 6 pm. What The Hell. Now those hours are of no uses to most people I talked to and everyone is pissed. One man had to move his business out and now I'm forced to move out of my 30 by 10 and it will take me a week or more and all the cost t will take and get this the short hours and my job travel time now will make it very hard to move more than one trip a day. Public Storage you are a rip-off and I'm spreading the word and you have lost business Your hours is the problem. Oh I never said anything about the security, its bad you can see you are renting units to the homeless and they go in and out sleeping and you cut hours to help with security...WOW... read more

The location is great as is the facility and staff however the new hours make it very difficult to access. I understand they were having a high theft problem however upgrading security and being open from 8am to 8pm would significantly improve the customer service. Seriously shady and misleading business practices here. I'm selling my house and need to store some furniture for a short period until I move into my new house. After shopping around, I found this location had the best rates in the area, so I booked a unit online. During the booking process, I noticed a "one-time administrative fee" of $22 appeared. Fine, whatever. Someone from the MLK Public Storage called me to confirm my reservation and asked me to make an appointment to come in and sign the paperwork. Thought that was strange that I needed an appointment, but ok. When I got there, they had all sorts of really specific questions about what I would be storing so that they could "make sure we get the right size unit for you", even though I already knew how much space I needed, and had already reserved the size I wanted. After spending 20 minutes on this checklist and looking at the unit, THEN they tell me that there is an $18 fee to buy their lock. No, you don't get your money back when you move out, you get to keep their lock. (whee! I've always wanted my own cylinder lock!) I complained that the fee was never mentioned on the online reservation, and was told there was nothing they could do about it. According to them, the website does say something about "other possible fees" in small print. (It does NOT. It says on the reservation page, "Total cost to move in:____", which is exactly the price I was expecting to pay.) Very annoyed, but already had a carload of stuff with me to unload, so I said fine. THEN they tell me that I am required to purchase their insurance, and which coverage limit would I like? NOPE. Even if this location is the cheapest, they will not get my business! I took my carload of boxes and drove to Stor-House in Renton which has NO admin fee, a $5 lock fee (which is refundable on move-out!), and NO required insurance fees. What a waste of my time. read more

I reserved a space online at 6pm on a Saturday, showed up with a carload of stuff at 6:30, got solid service from Anthony and was all set up, unloaded and rolling out by 6:59. I'm impressed and grateful for such quick service. Be prepared to pay $20 for a lock cylinder and $11/mo minimum for mandatory insurance on top of rental fees. read more

This is my second time renting a space from this facility. Anthony was so helpful and easy to talk to. I got taken care of despite it being kind of late. I love the security here. The minute they close, they are patrolling the grounds, making sure people leave. They've just added additional lighting that is not just providing more security but with these long evenings, it's easier to see all over. We've used this facility for the past 3 years and have always experienced above and beyond service, including finding a smaller unit closer to our larger unit after downsizing to make moving easier for us. The facility has always been clean and well-maintained. Moving supplies are well stocked. It has been true that our rates have crept up but are still on par with other storage facilities in the area. read more

This location is super close to the freeway and has plenty of units. The inside, climate-controlled units are super clean with plenty of room to move stuff down hallways and into the elevator. Bathrooms and water fountains are also located on the first floors and elevators are on both sides. The customer service was fantastic and and super friendly. It always makes me feel great to buy or rent something when the customer service is superb. They had good offers on packing supplies as well which we took advantage of. I've never rented a public unit so I have nothing to compare this to BUT......Renting a unit here was simple and a well communicated process, the staff is great, Tasha was prepared upon my arrival and explained every detail. The location easy to find, clean and accessible. The walls in between my unit and the next unit seem to be rather flimsy, like thick cardboard or something, this could be the norm and I guess, 'public' storage is not a place for valuables. Everything about this experience is a 5 except the walls between the smaller units, which again, could be the norm. read more

We rented a unit for only 3 months to find out that someone broke into our unit near the top of the hill within the last month. PS won't do anything at all but say to call the police, which we did. When they arrived, they said the unit had been broken into many times before and that the cameras don't even work most of the time. When I asked one of the managers about the cameras he said they don't have access to them and didn't even know if there was a camera by our unit. I am completely appalled at their lack of care or concern that we chose to trust them with our items and they can't even disclose that there had been prior break-ins there because "it isn't policy" Do not ever rent from a big company like PS because they don't care about you, they just want your money. No wonder I see so much about theft. The outdoor lighting along the back facing forest has not worked for a year now despite multiple complaints I have made to both their office and national headquarters. They refused giving me a rent discount for their lack of lighting maintenance. 2 weeks ago they gave me a rent increase instead. The crowning glory? After signing all the papers that say they are't responsible for my contents, and making me pay to insure the contents, now they are cutting the access hours from 15 hours per day (6AM - 9PM) by about half to only 8 hours per day (9:30 to 5:00), in the name of security when they aren't even liable. THEN HOW ABOUT FIXING THE LIGHTS? ugh. I hate moving. read more

These guys are cold... I've never had such a rough time dealing with a company and it almost seems like they would rather auction off someone's storage unit than be paid the rent. I got an emergency call from an indigent person who had not paid their storage rent since his mother passed away. He was confused and told me that he was about to lose his things and asked for help. I contacted this Public Storage and basically got the run around. I got different information from each person I spoke to at Public Storage. I asked if they could possibly waive the late fees based on the circumstances - They told me that he had missed two payments and his property would be auctioned off in 3 days if full payment was not received. I asked them if it would help if I could send a copy of the mother's death certificate and they said it didn't matter. I explained that the locker was not mine and I just wanted to find out what the amount due was and how to pay it. They told me it would be a $10 fee to pay it by phone and forwarded me to a number that said they were not the right department and forwarded me again, to a number that told me it would be a $20 convenience fee, not $10. I called their office back again and was forwarded to an automated line where I was able to make the payment. Thank goodness I am not in the situation of this indigent man. They obviously make more money from auctions than from rent... I can't remember having so much difficulty dealing with a company and I'm really surprised that they would not even consider an accommodation based on his circumstances and the fact that I was not the party that incurred the bill, but just trying to help someone out... The end result would be them getting paid their rent, as opposed to me walking away as many people would under these circumstances. read more

Worst business practices that I have witnessed for a very long time. This includes; Poor customer service, bait and switch rental rate quotation, poorly maintained facilities with rat infestation, overcharging and random rate hikes. I was a good customer,( paying on time etc for a couple of years) until they did bait and switch with rental rates for a transfer to a smaller space. Then I discovered that there has been a rat infestation for a few months also. Patrons were not informed so that we could check our units and perhaps have exterminator put traps there. (the exterminator was reportedly doing general patrol once per month. This was obviously insufficient). No notification given at all. I discovered rat feces and pee all over my boxes when I went to my unit and was moving boxes, getting it on my hands! When I informed the office personel, they handed me a mask and gloves. No compensation, no assistance with clean up and no explanation for why customers were not warned of the problem. Disgusting and dishonest. Do not come near a Public Storage if you value your belongings and your money. There are better, more secure and more honest businesses out there. I moved to Stor-House which has new state of the art facilities and serious security, excellent customer service and comparable rates for what you get (including free use of moving truck, perks and discounts for paying in advance, etc ). Very unhappy with the financial scam of this company. They advertised one price and then just jacked it up after I rented the space. I am sure they can show you the fine print and prove it is their legal right to change the price whenever they care to, but it is unethical and I would advise anyone to steer clear of this company. This storage is infested with rats! I have my personal items for close to 1 year, with no food, just furniture and items wraps in newspaper. When I went to remove my items I noticed parts of the boxes being torn, or so I thought. I assumed the boxes were torn whtile moving in. Thinking nothing of it, I move the items into my new home. Within two weeks I saw two mice running around in my living room as I had yet to completely unpack. Upon further investigation, many of my items had been soiled with feces and urine and I believe the items placed in my garage also had mice and rats hidden in the unpacked boxes. Although, I had insurance it fails to cover rodents. If you value your things don't store it here! read more

I rented here for only 4months I got behind on one payment I got a invoice in the mail stating that my unit was SOLD!! All my personal stuff when my finance died was in my unit.. My heart broke I called them and asked what's the protocol on a missed payment no one could even explain!!! These other reviews are bogus! fake! This place is a scam. They told me reserve a spot for my RV online for 65 a month. I was on my way and they called to say "How long is it again" I had already discussed with a manager the the extra "foot" 12 inches was not an issue. Now it all the sudden became an issue and they put me back out on the street when I planned to have this RV spot. I had to wait on hold for over 10min. The ignorant "manager" some female by the name of Nastasha or something never called me back. She Had a goober call me back to say "ahhhhh yea sorry our bad but we can put you up in a covered lot for 525.00 a month" Haha rite.....idiots...... This storage facility was suggested to me as a last-minute unexpected need. I called and was greeted with kindness. My arrival was later than expected and they called me to remind me of the closure time. Even when I arrived right before closing, they were friendly, helpful and kind while I was a stressful mess. I was so very appreciative of the patience they showed towards me and my situation. Anthony took my information and got me set up efficiently even though there wasn't time to move in on that day. I was grateful to have the paperwork completed in a timely manner on that day and Anthony was willing to go the extra to help me get set up. The only reason I can't 5-Star this site is because of the fact that I had to buy the proper lock AND insurance was mandatory. I was not prepared for the extra expense, but I was calmed by the fact that the facility is clean, professional and my belongings were 100 percent safe. Anthony was a major reason the cost for these extras wasn't a deal breaker. In addition, this facility is easy to get to, move through and place belongs in a timely manner. read more
