I want to recognize Anselmo, the resident manager at Public Storage San Rafael, for the support he provided. He was consistently friendly, communicative, and genuinely helpful. During a period when the elevator was out of service, he went out of his way to assist me by helping move some boxes downstairs, which made a big difference. He also kept me updated on the repair timeline and helped coordinate my move-out, making the process much smoother. The property is always clean, and looks great due to recent updates painted, with updated flooring and an upgraded elevator. Paint the floors of all things WITHOUT NOTICE Put an extra lock on the building INSIDE THE GATE WITHOUT NOTICE. I was renting a unit here originally because it was near my house - I have since switched to a new one 10 miles away because youd have a better chance keeping your belongings secured on the street than here. 1. Elevator has been broken for months. good luck if you get a second floor unit. better luck if you want to keep your stuff safe - they've just kept a side door propped open so the building is wide open. 2. Can't tell you how many times I've driven around the back and found the emergency exit propped open. There are urban campers who hang out next to it, and that door doesn't face anywhere visible. Not sure who's propping it open or why. Probably a bad idea. 3. I am 99% sure there's illegal activity being run out of one of the units. i saw some shit. I won't go into further details. 4. Don't bother making a reservation, it's meaningless. I made one for a first floor unit, and it was rented to someone else the very next day (and one day before my move in date) I have put up with my annoyance at the the place for convienence, but really - steer clear there are better options out there. Silver lining - the guy Ramone who works here is pretty great and probably the only thing that kept me renting a unit for so long. i hope this review doesn't reflect poorly on him - he's communicative, honest, and a good person to manage the property. I received financing approval on my new investment (killer marina view duplex) in San Rafael. We're in the midst of renting our main house out (after 25 yrs.) and will need plenty of room to store the family treasures & mementos. PLUS we have a ton of currently active items (think SUP's, Kayaks, bikes, fly fishing gear etc... Once the new place is remodeled, it will be our interim new family HQ. We needed safe and professional storage nearby. Not too excited about the options closest to us so we Yelp'd to see what the next closest location that come highly rated: Public Storage on Merryman popped up. I logged in online and found out they had ONE unit left in the entire place. That's a good sign. It just happened to be about exactly what i was looking for: gravel level; drive up; deep to hold SUP's and kayaks; close to the new home and solid "open" hours. Public Storage appeared to have all that going. I end up calling as I was driving up and talked to the centralized reservations. I'm not a fan of not being able to call the local number. Never the less, the young lady was very kind and reserved the 10'x30' unit for me. I was told that an appointment would be needed and asked if i could/would be arriving today. I confirmed. On my way up I called the "local" number. I guess it was routed to the central number. Jose was great. He found me and said to head up, and to be there before 4:30. No mention of an appointment however. So, I assumed I had a "standing" appointment. I just felt good that when I called in, they actually had me in the system. When I arrived, a younger gentleman named Ramon was on-duty. He unlocked the door and let me in. After mentioning the "no-appointment" arrival (Covid protocol compliance issue), I did explain that I had called... He was able to take me, since I guess on a late Sunday afternoon, it was a little slow. He found my reservation and let me walk over to see the unit. I mistakenly went to the wrong building at first and thought it was locked. But he came out to verify with me and found my mistake. All good. The unit was super CLEAN and the light bulb worked. I wish they would provide a 110 plug to plug chargers in with but otherwise, this place is fantastic. We finish the paperwork and I unload my first batch: 8 skate boards, 2 stand up inflatables, 2 model sailboats (RC yacht club certified racing boats - still in boxes); 2 indo boards; Lionel model train set; box of Burning Man clothes. I don't eve cover my entire back wall yet. I should hopefully have plenty of storage space and circulation space to get to it all. This will be the fist of many visits while I unload the house, purge and reload here at Public Storage, but I feel good about this location and the condition of the property. I have been renting a second floor unit here since March 2022. During the last year the elevator has been frequently broken. The door to the upstairs has since not being locked which leaves the property vulnerable specially as one day I arrived and the gate was wide open( stuck) while there was no service person on the property. When I called I was told it would be taken care of in the next 72 HOURS. THAT'S A LOT OF TIME FOR A STORAGE UNIT TO BE ACCESSIBLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC! The price for my 5x5 unit rapidly went up from $127 to $227 ( including $15 insurance) while the service has gone down. Under the current circumstances I can not recommend this property. The property manager Ramon is kind and this should not reflect negatively on him as he is aware of the problem but it seems that his reports to his companies boss are falling on deaf ears. read more

I tried to rent a unit here. I followed instructions as I was told and filled out the information online. It charged me the $380, but said there was an "error". I called the San Rafael (380 Merrydale) location directly and they said there was absolutely no record of me reserving a unit, and they have no record of me ever being charged. ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE. The woman at the San Rafael location said that I should try going through the process again as the original fee would probably be refunded. So I did it again, and it charged me $380 again. YES, AGAIN. It also said "error" AGAIN. I tried calling customer service, they were zero help, had no answers and transferred me to the "district manager" who left for vacation today. I'm now $760 in the hole and absolutely no one will help me. I also don't even have a storage unit. Here's an image of the charges. I will be filing complaints wherever I can. It's completely unacceptable that no one can help me and no one is even trying to follow up with me to get this taken care of. read more

Bit surprised by the negative reviews. I needed a storage, went online to Public Storage, filled out the requested info which held immediately my rental and price even though I was to move in the following week. Easy process. Was promptly called the next day by the manager Ramon (as well as Corporate to make sure I was contacted and got what I needed). When I met Ramon, he was very pleasant, explained all details and showed me the storage unit and property and clearly explained how to download app, how to access property, hours etc. I found the location clean, well lit, elevators large and access easy. Using app on phone to access gate without getting out of car a plus. Public Storage is definitely a corporate organization and that does show up in some ways yet overall a good experience. Btw, the price was very competitive, if not lower than some other storage facilities nearby. read more

WARNING: Yesterday I went to my storage to get stuff and was notified that my unit had been broken into. 5 thousand dollars worth of equipment was stolen. They were moderately apologetic and helpful. The manager Ramone, who is a very nice guy and up until this happened has been A+ with customer service. He lives in an apartment right next to the gate. I am absolutely SHOCKED that this happened. They know who it is, but didn't go to the police because "they had no clear proof." Cameras at the front gate but not inside the buildings at all. What in the actual fuuuuck?? None? No cameras inside at all? Didn't even call the cops!!!?? I'm a calm guy but I am extremely unhappy, upset, and dumbfounded. I asked him to make this right for me. I was clear, direct, and reasonable. I asked for a refund on my rent for the 6 months before it got stolen under his watch. That seems likevthe LEAST they could do for me here. Ramon told me this was a corporate operation, that he had no power to do that, and gave me a fucking customer service number to call on Monday. Uhhh no. No fing way. They will make this right for me, 100%. As soon as they can before I myself happily involve the local police, Yelp, Google reviews, the BBB and the city of San Rafael, where I do not live but where I have many serious connections politically. I will not be treated like this. I will not allow it. It's not right, and they seem unwilling to help me, AT ALL. No real apology, no call to the police (11 units got hit out of hundreds. Lucky me!) Their one GD job is to store and protect our belongings. I payed 185$ a month for most of a year to have my belongings, which are dear to me, and expensive, and I'm not wealthy I'm a local carpenter.... Stolen. gone. This is not right. Do not do business here. Nobody. After seeing what happened I can assure you they are unable to protect your belongings, and will not even try to lift a finger to help if something bad happens. I'm a reasonable guy. You can reach out to ask me about this. I don't get angry often and I never, ever write negative reviews. But this is simply unbelievable, unconscionable, and wrong. And they are showing 0 signs of taking responsibility and trying to fix it. Icing on the shit cake: I told Ramon to close my account immediately. Very clearly. He said he would immediately. I just signed on to the app and my account is still active. They still want me to pay them to make my precious possessions disappear. Unbelievable. Close your account and leave this dumpster fire hell hole business immediately!! the Mill Vallet PS location is more expensive, but they have really kind caring customer service and no history of break ins, so it's worth the cost. This might look low rent besides being an old facility but they want premium prices. Take advantage of the 1/2 off and then get out. This Public Storage doesn't meet basic security standards. Despite the fact that there are units outside, there are no cameras on premises. The two story building doesn't have locks or codes at the entrance. Moreover, there are no carts near the elevator. The "$1 for first month rent" promotion is a bait and switch scam--it only applies to the smallest sized unit but their promos make it look as if it's universal. When we asked about this, Ramon the manager declined the promo and bluntly told us to read the promotion more closely. SMH Generally speaking the manager, Ramon, is incredibly RUDE to prospective customers. We had some questions for him so we (two people) approached the office door and opened it to enter. He coldly barked "only one person in the office." So I stayed outside with the door ajar to be able to hear the conversation about OUR storage unit. This guy walks up and shuts the door in my face and then locks it--as if I'm going to force myself into his precious office. No apology. Nothing. Totally unprofessional! District management should really train their onsite manager in customer etiquette. read more

When we needed a storage unit in Marin, we considered a few different places. Despite the previous negative reviews, we decided to go with Public Storage in San Rafael for convenience. And we are glad we did. I've held an online account with Public Storage for 6 years for a unit in Burbank and another one in Walnut Creek. Monthly statements are kept clear and emailed to me upon auto-pay. We reserved a unit online but didn't like it in person, so switched to another, and the process was painless. The new unit was clean and well-kept, and Joe at the counter was very helpful and courteous. You would NEVER have a problem with them if you make your payment on time as the lease agreement says. You are required to agree and sign it as you move in. It is a national chain and they're just following the protocol. You might have better luck with a smaller local facility if you think you may be late or delinquent. read more

A couple reasons I believe this Public Storage location is abysmal; 1) My unit was broken into and the facility could have cared less. Expensive snow boarding equipment and many personal items were stolen. 2) My rent increased from $85 per month to $130 in only within 6 months!!! They do not care about you, your life possessions and are only interested in taking advantage of people. I HIGHLY recommend you DO NOT STORE YOUR BELONGINGS HERE. If I could give this place -100 stars I would. They had painters here working for the last month. They painted the inside and outside of the buildings. The storage unit I have is a rectangle closet at the end of the hall and has about a 6 inch gap between the top of the wall and the ceiling. I was at my unit about a month ago putting some things inside, everything was fine then. Since there were painters everywhere I decided to come back since there was all this work being done. I came back on Sunday, April 18th to find that when the work had been done all of this paint dust or whatever it is, blew in from the top of my unit and covered all of my belongings. I have a 2 bed room apartment in there. Everything I own. Everything. Some of my stuff is bagged and stored but somethings like camp gear (tents, sleeping pads, etc) are not because I take that stuff out from spring to fall. I went to talk to the person in the office, who I'm guessing is Ramon since that's what other reviews say, and he was the most unprofessional person I have EVER had to deal with. He said," Do you have insurance??" I said, "Yes." He then says, "you have to contact your insurance." and that was it. So I don't understand how everyone is talking about this guy being helpful or even good at customer service. I turn around go back to my car drive over to my unit get on the phone with insurance, file a claim and Ramon comes up to my car after I've already been on the phone for at least 5 minutes and finally offers some customer service while trying to give me a brochure to contact the insurance company. Look, I wouldn't be so upset if he had shown some empathy and compassion for my belongings being ruined. Absolutely no apology that that had happened or anything even though it was most certainly their fault. On top of it all this guy is the property manager. So all these reviews saying this guy is great are either lying or caught him on a good day. Its also not my first time dealing with him. He chased me and my boyfriend down yelling at him cause he didn't put the code in to drive through the gate because there was a person in front of us. Yeah I know you're supposed to do that, he didn't know and you don't need to yell at people. You work at a storage facility and furthermore I rent a unit here. I'm not some person who wandered on the property. I deal with customers all day long in Marin and I don't talk to people that way. The insurance lady said I may not even be covered. So now I get to waste my time pulling all my stuff out getting it cleaned (I do not have a washer and dryer, I go to the laundromat) spend money to clean everything and sweep the unit so that I even feel comfortable keeping my stuff in that dirty unit. I basically paid these people to ruin my stuff. As soon as this is over I will move my things somewhere else. I am so glad that I'm moving my remaining items out of my unit. This place is horrible. After the first year they raised the price. I think I've been there for two years and the raised it 2-3 times. Also my husband lost both keys which wasn't any easier. So we called and asked them what we should do. They told us the district manager could cut it off for free, but hes the manager for the whole bay area and only he can cut it off. They also didn't know when the district manager would be in, which is ridiculous. So we had to spend $80.00 for a locksmith to come unlock our lock. So my advice is don't lose the keys and if you do, make sure you have 7-10 days in advance for the district manager, because if you need you things you will be waiting or paying for it.
