I am so glad to be done with San Rafael Self Storage. When my fiance and I moved into a condo with no garage, we decided to keep some of our belongings in storage (he builds cars as a hobby and there was nowhere in our home for all of the tools and tires). It was a short-term solution that should have been pretty uneventful, however, we found San Rafael Self Storage to be sub-par. Two major issues accelerated our choice to move things out quickly after we moved into our house. 1. Leak in the roof. We had our items in temperature controlled storage on purpose. In addition to car items, we also kept some keepsakes here. We were SO disappointed to find a leak had let a ton of water into our unit over the winter. Very thankfully we had our items in closed plastic bins, but this not only should not have happened, but when we reported it, their resolution was lack-luster ("you can move your things to another unit, but we do not promise there will not be leaks.") 2. Homeless people sleeping in the entry and using facilities. This is supposed to be secured storage -- we have to punch in a custom code every time we come and go. Unfortunately, the local homeless population seems to jump the (very low) barriers to the property and on several occasions I found people using the bathrooms to shower or sleeping in the building. In a facility that often has no onsite staff, such lax property security made me feel very uncomfortable being there alone or after dark. I'm not sure what better options are available, but I would certainly not recommend San Rafael Self Storage. read more

I am updating this review to let you know that the company has agreed to have the bed topper and clothes professionally washed and folded. The rodents were apparently a new development to the area. They are sorry, and offered to move my items to a newer facility they own down the street. -- Nov. 2019: Rats were living in my storage unit. There were feces everywhere. In the rental agreement, they say they are not responsible for any damage by rodents, fire, water damage or insects and that you need to have your own insurance to cover these issues. How horrible to arrive tonight to find rat poop everywhere and items chewed and damaged. $129. a month is too much for this kind of problem and they lock the gates at 8pm sharp. I once had to call the police at 7:45 to get out. I really wanted to love this place, but these things were very upsetting. read more

Needed a place to store furniture as we move from Marin County to Palm Springs. These folks are easy to work with and while there isn't the most parking space around the facility, it is manageable. The storage unit we rented was on the second floor and the elevators made it easy to get items to it. I would recommend. read more

My experience has been great. I have had stuff stored there for about 2 years now. I've lost my key a couple of times and they break my lock for me free of charge and help me get back in to my unit. The people who run the operation have always been really nice to me.... I moved between these 2 years and forgot to tell them so my bill was going somewhere else and also I changed banks and started using a different debit card.... after a few months (I had totally forgot all about it) they phoned me and were really nice... took off the late charges when I explained what had happened and updated all my 411 on the phone. Price wise they are are pretty much the same as everyone else... A lot of the Storage areas in this area of Marin are in flood zones like when it rains pretty hard and the tide is in so I was really looking for a place that I didn't have to worry in case of a heavy rain/tide situation and they were the best I could find. read more

This is a great location located right off the freeway. We moved from San Rafael to Sausalito and we needed a place to store a few boxes. The pricing was affordable for only $90 a month, and they offer on a month to month basis. The storage has elevators, air conditioning, and security. It's a deal compared to other locations and the management is super nice. read more

I wish I could leave negative stars but Yelp will not allow me to do so. Do yourself the favor and go elsewhere these people are inconsiderate, unprofessional, ridiculous, diabolical, and unethical. The on-site employee (s) May want to consider anger management. I went with a friend to pull a few items out of her storage Wednesday evening. As we were wrapping it up , one of the employees shouted that they were closing soon and if we were there after 8:00 pm there would be a one hundred dollar fine? As I informed my friend of the ridiculous employee announcement that's when things really took a turn. The two employees whom were on duty decided that they would come and yell at us explaining that they were there all day for 13 hours. And I understood this and tried to talk to the on-site employee and let him know that he was over reacting and we were leaving. Any reasonable person would have said ok and walked us out the door or would have given us the actual time to shut and lock the door. Unfortunately this was not the case he then decided to jump on his phone and claim to be calling the police department? Wtf? Next we were greeted by another employee who had a blinking flash light and he claimed he was calling the police department?!! Seriously ? Within seconds one of the two employees pulls the alarm on the building so the entire property has an obnoxious alarm sound wailing through the inside and outside. Overwhelming for our dogs who are waiting in the car but also a really unprofessional and diabolical tactic . My girlfriend grabs the phone and calls the police department on her own for this un reasonable behaibiThe police show up and basically assisted her and we found out that they never called the police in the first place .. very strange behavior. In closing stay the hell away from these jerks ! I guarantee I won't be storing anything with these guys ! Anyone else see what the owner replied with ? To whom is he addressing ? This is insane.. If my story is inconsistent then why in the world do I have votes for my review and the owner has zero votes. How many reviews shall we consider bogus on his end? How many Yelp accounts on his feedback are brand new accounts with only one yelp review to San Rafael Storage ? Your employees pulled the alarm ...should I have the 911 call saved as an audio file to upload for the entire world to hear ? My friend and I each have a dog a service dog why would we pull the alarm to scare our pets? I suggest you send your employees to school . Storage units in Marin are spendy because rents here are high, but I compared a few nearby facilities and chose this one because the guy in the office genuinely cared about finding me the right storage unit, and their office and storage spaces were clean and we'll maintained. I've never had a problem with accessing my storage unit, the carts or elevator they provide, or any billing issues. So, would recommend! read more

I used San Rafael Self Storage for about 3 months to store my belongings during a move of all our furniture to another state. I'm extremely happy with the help I received from the manager, Kim. From the beginning, Kim let me know I could use extended hours for my move in (past 8 pm). I came to the unit many times and Kim was always very helpful. At one point I accidentally triggered the alarm for my unit around 8pm, and she came and turned it off and was very pleasant about it. The biggest thing though was that she was so helpful when the movers came that I didn't need to fly out to California to be there in person. She had an envelope with an extra set of keys I'd let her, and she and the movers managed everything on that day without me. She called me when it was done to let me know everything was a-okay. I was very pleased with the hours it was open; I didn't know this before evaluating storage facilities, but most storage places close at 6pm - this facility is open till 8pm! The storage spaces are fine, but I would not suggest renting from this place. They are very shady and apparently dishonest. I had two major problems: 1) There was a homeless person sleeping in the stairs the day the movers and I went to move my stuff out. For a place that advertised their security with gates, alarms, etc. there should not be a homeless person and their belongings sleeping in the stairwell, blocking the way. I had notice the times I visited that apparent homeless people were coming in/out of the place but never imagined they slept there. 2) I gave appropriate notice of vacate (more notice than required as I gave 3+ weeks of notice) via email, received a confirmation phone call and yet still got a bill for the following month. I emailed back and attached the notice I had sent of notice to vacate. Still my credit card was billed. I have had to file a dispute with my credit card company as they will not stop billing my credit card. The proper notice was given, the space is empty and there was/is no damage to the space but the billing will not stop. They will not respond to my emails. Very shady. I rented from Bellam Storage before and they were fantastic! Unfortunately I needed a bigger space and one was not available at Bellam so I had to move to this place and have this bad experience. read more

The staff is kind and helpful. The location was very convenient for us. The storage unit was accessible any time I went. Overall the facility is clean and well-kept. I trusted the employees when two of them assured me that the unit would not leak during rainy months. Even though I did my best to make sure nothing important sat directly on the floor, almost 1/3 of the unit had significant water damage after the winter. I had many items ruined, but the most cost significant was my new couch which ended up moldy. The manager was rude and even after he told me to get quotes to get it cleaned, he would not return my messages. They raise their rates regularly (4 times in less than 2 years). I was warned of this by other places, but again was assured by the employees that the other places exaggerated. read more

I had a great experience! I was previously storing some of my things in San Francisco and did not feel safe going there, it was dirty, I had to dodge bum pee, and management was completely unhelpful. So when I found San Rafael storage I was so pleased! It's clean, very well lit, and the staff have gone out of their way to help every time I have needed to move any furniture! I recently divorced and was forced to downsize, so this transition has been an emotional rollercoaster. The staff was soo patient and kind, I felt right at home! I had an odd situation. I decided to rent some space and placed an order over the phone. I found out later that I didn't need the space -- the items I inherited from my dad's estate weren't that extensive -- so I decided to cancel the reservation (also over the phone) one day before I was expected to arrive at the storage facility with my belongings. I dealt with three different people on the phone -- all of them courteous and knowledgeable -- but I found out that I was very likely not going to get a full refund due to a corporate policy. I did finally receive a refund check for $132 -- not quite the $142.86 charge but better than what I expected. read more
