The owner and her brother interfered with me and my movers when I moved in and when I moved out. They have a terrible reputation among movers because they interfere with the movers' work. They delay everything and make the move as difficult and stressful as possible for the customer at a time which is already stressful enough. For all those who recommended this place, I have to disagree. What an awful experience I just had attempting to extract the availability and price of a 5x8 unit from the older woman at the desk. What should have been a simple request with a simple "yes" or "no" answer was a vetting session which bordered on law enforcement style interrogation. She got out a notebook and bombarded me with questions such as "what kind of items are you storing and where are they now?" I realize it is standard procedure to ask if the customer is storing certain items such as flammable, chemicals, etc., but this went beyond that into the prying personal territory. Where my belongings were before or are now is simply no body's business. She even had the temerity to inquire "is it in boxes?" What does it matter what it is stored in as long as it fits in the space and I am satisfied? Some younger guy sitting behind her stared continuously and rudely at me and my friend. She started to bring me to sho me a unit on the second floor, but I stopped her to ask the price -again- at which point she spat, "Is price the main concern?" "No", I shot back, "price is A concern, not THE main one ." Then she shifted midstream to claim there were no 5x8 spaces when only a minute ago she was offering to show me one. Next, she scribbles something on a Post-it and thrusts it my way announcing, "this is the least expensive." I left insulted and fuming. I think this was the first time in my life I've been profiled. My friend blamed himself, and I could see that; he's from a wealthy family-Belvedere born and raised -but he looks pretty scruffy, and he knows it. I like to do Boho style sometimes and today I was wearing the fake dreads hairpiece I add during the lockdown; I actually had forgotten I was wearing them. I am as white as the evil crone herself, but I DO appear not as whitebread when I'm boho styling. I guess she didn't notice my cashmere hoodie and Apple Watch. Or the TopSiders. The upside to this was the storage she referred me to had decent prices AND availability, along with a polite and helpful worker who gave me the info I requested immediately and politely. Maybe because he couldn't see me. Just joking. However, reading the Yelp reviews, it appears the place she recommended is pretty shady and I doubt I will use it. Thanks, Lady. Needed to send a 10 ft. runner to a friend in NYC. Someone recommended Bellam for finding a box. Sizing is a bit unusual 32" x 9"x 9". Andree,the owner, not only found a box, but custom cut so that there would not be a lot of extra space. And then she got out her special Saran Wrap, scissors, packing tape, bubble wrap and went to work. She spent half an hour packing the box. All at no cost. She only charged me for the box and tape. I came to Bellam for moving boxes + tape, I had two weeks to clear out our three bedroom with tons of storage. My husband is a packrat and conveniently out of town during the move. I was overwhelmed + without a plan. Moving is stressful. 2020 is overall stressful enough. When I met Andree she took one look at me and said "let's get you sorted out" She gave me a recommendation for a local guy Vlad, who was calm, gentle + kind. He and his helper George performed tetris magic and were gentle with every box. As a Producer - I am naturally inclined to "produce/direct" such a huge operation. However, I also recognize talent and Andree has been packing folks into storage units for decades. She is the expert + a powerhouse. The Worst! Bellam Storage touts - clean - no rodents - easy entry and exit - excellent service, etc. What their advertisements do not say is that the woman who claims to be the owner, is a racist. I arranged for one of the largest storage spaces in order to place some of my things from my beach house to await their move into a house in the midst the final steps of new ownership. One of my immediate problems is that EVERYONE seemed to be moving in September and none of the movers I contacted could do anything until the last days of September or early October. That was two weeks to late for me, so I contacted Rocky who has worked for my family for 20 years to see if he could find some manpower and trucks to help me. He did. He and several people he contacted promised to help me until we were finished. None of us had moving expertise, we had only pick-up trucks, but their willingness to help was of immense value to me. After four days of heavy lifting some materials headed to the Dump, others to Bellam Storage. On the last of three days the last load was being placed into the storage space and as one pick-up was already empty, the woman in question came and demanded to see what was in the boxes, indeed she began to open the taped boxes. Rocky reminded her that these were not her property, which seemed to enrage her even more. She came outside where the now empty truck was waiting and screamed "you people get out of here" - "...you Mexicans have brought this disease to us, get out." Rocky was appalled, and so was I when I learned of the affront. I couldn't wait to get my stuff out of there. The idea of paying for space to support that sort of racism was and is anathema to me. read more

I had repeated and terrible experiences with the woman who runs the place. She is so consistently rude and controlling. I rented there for many many years and when I moved out she surly said "leave the premises now! you no longer rent here". Oh my. We had to move some things and she got in all our business, went into our locker to supervise how and where we moved things. And when I asked for a bathroom key she avoided giving it to me and did about 5 other tasks and was continuing to do tasks until finally i asked her if I could have the key before she did more tasks. I have been a long-time customer of Bellam Self Storage for my moving supplies. One time ONLY I went to a big box hardware store to buy boxes and wrapping paper only to return to Bellam Self Storage because the quality of their product is far superior to anything else I've used. They are now my "go to" supplier when I move, and I move A LOT! I never save my boxes because of storage issues and pass them on to others who are in need of them, so I've been in there frequently. Every time I've gone there, I have always been greeted politely by whoever is behind the counter. The owner is incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. Today I went in to buy a shipping box. I explained that I had shipped something to a former co-worker who had moved on to a new job in Detroit. We had a going away dinner for him and gave him a few nice nice farewell gifts. Since he and his wife were flying out in a few days, I offered to ship them so that he wouldn't have to worry about it. Unfortunately, the shipping carrier who shall remain nameless had destroyed the box and threw it away, so I had to go purchase replacements of all of the gifts and wanted to make sure this time it would arrive safely. She immediately suggested a double-walled box because of its sturdiness. She then offered two different options for bubble wrap. While her colleague was ringing me up she disappeared only to return with some styrofoam and explained how to use it on top of the framed pieces before wrapping with the bubble wrap. Although I've purchased a lot of moving boxes from her in the past, I'm glad I thought to go there to buy shipping supplies. There has always been a wonderful amount of knowledge provided each time I visit. I will gladly return the next time I need shipping supplies. Since I now own a condo, hopefully I won't be moving again any time soon! read more

I don't think storage can get better. I rented two storage spaces at Bellam as I negotiated life and professional transitions over several years. From beginning to end Andree and her staff were professional, clear and showed pride and integrity in having a clean and beautiful storage facility. Andree runs a tight ship. I've posted a positive review before but wanted to update because I saw some of the recent negative reviews. There must have been some miscommunication or people have had unreasonable expectations of what self-storage facilities actually do. I have used self-storage and mini-storage facilities many times in a number of locations in CA. Bellam is the best. We live in a high fire risk area so decided a couple of years ago that it was worth it to keep a storage facility to keep some vintage items safe, and rotate different items in and out of storage seasonally. I investigated many self-storage options, got on the waitlist for Bellam - and it was worth it. The facility is extremely secure, climate controlled, and spotless. We've moved our things into larger units a couple of times as we've begun the process of going through and evaluating everything in our house. The staff has always been SUPER helpful. I expect that when I get to the point where I can move things back into into a *smaller* unit they will be just as gracious and helpful. I am amazed and saddened at the negative reviews - Andree is *very businesslike.* I have never experienced *any* rudeness from her or any of the rest of her team. She, Matt, and the rest of the staff are top notch and really know their stuff. There are probably less expensive storage facilities in Marin, but I would be surprised if they were as secure, and all of the storage units (except for car storage) are inside and protected from the elements. The location - right off the freeway - is very convenient, as are the hours of operation. In any case, if you are looking for clean, well-maintained storage in San Rafael, I highly recommend them. There's a reason they have waitlists for storage unit vacancies - and that's because they are so good and so popular. Plus, as others have said, ART all over the walls! read more

I have been storing items all over the country in my 35 years of renting and I can tell you I have NEVER ever had my items in a facility as immaculate and well run as a Bellam storage!!! (Blonde) The woman who works here/owns this facility is phenomenal! She is wise, kind and we are so grateful to have found this place. She even opened for us because we forgot that they were closed on Tuesday and we had driven all the way there from napa to get her matching boxes the day before the move. My wife and I are from Los Angeles. My wife has a rental property in Mill Valley. We learned on very short notice during the Christmas holiday season that a tenant was about to move out. Luckily, we found a replacement tenant very quickly. But the new tenant wanted access to a garage and a room that had been locked up before, filled with stuff. So we needed to find a self-storage place -- and quickly. We drove up to Mill Valley to make arrangements. I had two days to: 1) Find a storage place; and 2) Move everything that needed to be removed from the house and put it into storage. I Googled around and made a list of 6-7 places to check out. Bellam was the least expensive on the list, so I started there. Often "you get what you pay for," so I wasn't expecting much. But everything about the place was a hugely pleasant surprise. The place was exceedingly clean and well organized; the lady who runs the place, Andree, is a real hoot. So I said "yes" on the spot and didn't bother checking out the other places on my list. I know this sounds ridiculous, but Andree made packing things into storage FUN. She personally oversaw how everything got stacked up in our storage unit and it was thrilling to watch such a master at work. We had two movers help us that day and their English wasn't terrific. At first they didn't want to listen to Andree, they just wanted to do it their own way and get out of there. But they quickly figured out who the real boss was and "snapped to." I think in a former life, Andree helped build the pyramids. Or maybe she was Cleopatra herself, completely at ease commanding those around her. Thank you, Queen Andree, you're the best! read more
