NOTE: I am writing this review as someone who is NOT an actual customer -- but who was trying to become one.
My mother and I (living in separate homes) have been looking to rent a 10x10 storage unit to help us both clear some space in our houses, and the Public Storage facility on E. Gude Drive seemed to push the right buttons. We reserved a unit through the company's website but my mother wanted to actually see the storage area in person (as we had done, with zero problems, with another company about a year ago at a location that was far less convenient). Since the reservation was in my mother's name, she received several automated text messages within minutes of the online reservation, each looking to have her complete an actual rental.
Our first red flag was a voice message left a short time later by a man calling from the company who was 1) confused about why we hadn't completed the rental process, 2) EXTREMELY confused about where he was located(!), and 3) so confused about his location that, after stumbling over the phone number several times, finally just told us to call the facility using the phone number on the website.
Our second red flag was that any attempt to reach a human being by phone was stymied -- every time -- by a computer giving me only two options: either press 1 to rent a unit or press 2 if I am already an established customer. Zero chance to actually speak with a person.
A young woman called my mother some time later the same day, also to check on why we had not completed the rental process. Mom explained she wanted to see the unit in person first, and the caller seemed really, really surprised. (I was listening in on the call at Mom's request, so I heard everything first-hand.) After a couple of minutes, things improved when the caller made an appointment for us to meet with the facility manager at 11:00am on Friday (our chosen "move in day," based on the original online reservation).
I parked at the facility at 10:55am on Friday. The office was dark, with no sign of life inside, and all the doors were locked. There was a package (FedEx, I think) just sitting on the ground in front of one of the doors. We stood at the door, directly underneath a security camera, to make sure we could be seen. After some time, a USPS truck pulled up and the mailman was bewildered that there was no one there, then just pushes some envelopes through the door before departing. A few minutes later, a moving truck pulled up to the gate, where it was met by someone getting out of one of the parked cars. We thought it might be the facility manager, but his shirt had the moving company logo and he immediately busied himself hielping the crew unload the truck. Aside from a woman having an apparently annoyed phone conversation a few feet away in the parking lot, there are no other signs of life.
I dialed the customer service number posted in several places in the office windows, and got the same useless binary choice but no human. I scanned the QR code on one of the signs and was connected to the company website, where I found the Customer Service Chat. The chatbot was totally stymied as soon as I typed we were waiting to meet staff for a scheduled appointment and said it would transfer me to a human being... Who logged on, then almost immediately disconnected, then reconnected and asked how they could help me about a minute later. I typed the same info and was told all they could do was give me a toll-free number that I should call. We ended the chat and I called the number... and got the same useless binary menu choice as at the other number I'd called.
Finally, after leaning against the front door for a bit over 20 minutes, we decided to leave. A man was standing by my car and asked, "How long have you been waiting?" so we thought he was the facility manager... But no, he was just another customer who was supposed to have had a meeting with the AWOL manager. After a few minutes chatting, we all got in our respective cars and left.
On a day we had a long "to do" list, we wasted almost half an hour waiting to meet a facility manager who never showed up, despite our being reassured we had a scheduled appointment. Even better, late this evening (Saturday), my mother received a text message stating we had "missed out move-in day" and were being given another two days grace period to complete the process.
If -- BIG "if" at this point -- we end up renting from this company, it will not be at the E. Gude Drive location... and before we try them again, we're going to dedicate some time to checking out their many competitors first. read more
