Just don't do it. I would not recommend storing your items here. 1) we are on the ground floor and it is moldy. Visible white mold and everything smells like mildew. 2) They have got you where they want you! Once you move in, it's a continuous fight about the price. It consistently goes up, up and up. I have spoken to them numerous times and they lower it slightly, now they are raising my rent by $50 dollars at one go. Forget it!! Find another cheaper storage space or just don't store your stuff at all! It's not worth it. I don't think other spaces try to bleed you dry in the same way as Public Storage. My friend uses U-Haul and they have not raised his rent in years. (I must say though that the staff, when they are there, are very polite and competent.) read more

Scam. They get you in with a good, low offer and then once you get comfortable they raise the rent significantly. They give you time to move your whole life into the unit then raise it when you're the most vulnerable (when items would take a lot of work to move). I'm only 3 months into my stay and they just raised my rent from $70 to $110. A $40 price increase is ridiculous. They say they can do this because of "supply and demand" and that summer is their busiest even though there are hundreds of units sitting empty. I am quite literally always the only one on my entire floor when I'm there. It's all a game to them. My advice is to go to a small business/mom and pop style storage in the suburbs that will treat you much better. read more

What Public Storage is doing, they offer a special deals, but it's just a gimmick to attract customer. You'll come, sign contract and after 5 months you rate will be increased up to $20.00. That's what happened to me. In January of 2024 I signed a contract and in May my rate was increased and Public Storage doesn't give you 30 days prior notice. Also someone, who works on premises, broke into my storage. Public Storage refuses to reimburse its customers. Also working personnel is terrible. It took me 3 days to get copy of the contract, because District Manager told storage manager not to send it to me. I had to write several emails to the District Manager to get the copy. Public Storage advertises that the first month free. This only applies to certain locations. False advertising!! Their Customer Service or Manager is difficult to reach by phone and also they are no help when you have a problem with their facility. They have mice infestation!!! My loveseat had mice droppings in it and cotton torn from it. And plus they charge for the full month only if your belongings are there for a lousy 2 days out of the month!! Please for the love of god do not get involved with public storage - they reserve the right to raise your monthly rent at a whim and for arbitrary amounts, I had my storage unit for less than 2 years and they have raised my rent by OVER 100 percent I started off paying 90 dollars for 7x10 unit and now pay 192 dollars - again with only the "simple" explanation of ... you signed a contract. Which is fair but they will do the same to you because they are banking on the fact that cost and time spent to move all of your stuff to a new place will out way the financial strain they continue to put on you until they essentially make the cost so insane and untenable you have to leave. Constant price hikes. I started in 2017 paying $110 a month total. 5 months later I am at $121.00 monthly. By the end of 2 years and on today's date I am paying $179.00 a month. Go to MakeSpace, they don't increase rental prices on you. You always pay the rate they first give you. I found the self-storage laws in Illinois and it seems self-storage companies have their fingers in the law. If we do something against that law we get penalized by the storage unit allowed by the law. If they do something wrong the law does not penalize them in any way. This company is corrupt. BEWARE of this place. What should be a simple, freezing cold, oversized closet with no light where you can store your off season clothes and holiday supplies can be a real hassle - and a classic bait and switch rip off. I moved into an 8 foot space on the second floor in July when my new apartment lacked space for those storage items. They gave me a "great deal" on it at $45 per month plus taxes - this place is NO palace, so let's be clear. I chose a storage facility by PRICE and proximity alone. Exactly four months later I get a note saying, oops we changed our pricing - now it's $58 per month. That's more than a 20 percent jump in less than six months from move in! Bait. Switch. On top of that, they don't sent monthly invoices by mail so I agreed to email invoicing. This month was the third time I received NO invoice, but got a "oh no you missed your payment - now you owe a $20 late fee!" Email. Curious how the original "must be getting stuck in my spam folder", but the late fee notification makes it thru no problem. I travel a lot and manage my other bills for years on end with not so much as a hiccup - except this one. Now I need to find time to move my crap somewhere else - and get a minimum one year guarantee on the price! Keep looking. read more

Destroyed our belongings from water damage because they aren't regulating humidity properly. Water all over the floors. Instead of fixing the problem the incompetent management simply put down a "wet floor" sign. Mold and moisture all over my unit and in the hallways ...when I asked her for help manager Becca Spena did nothing and even tried to charge me for a few boxes so I could try to carry away the few things not destroyed. Staggering incompetence paired with a lack of compassion is what you pay for at Public Storage on Broadway. It's been weeks since I discovered the damage and management has still not returned a call from my insurance company so I can process my claim. I am weary of most chain things. However, I recommend this Public Storage location (with a few "but" items). Positives: 1) Very friendly staff. They are quite young, but if this is something that bothers you, do not let it be off-putting. They are fast and responsive. All of my interactions with them were under 5 minutes and they were easy and pleasant. 2) Good location. Easy to access off of Broadway. 3) Felt secure. 4) All of my items came out unscathed and without having to deal with any b.s. ***Here's my "but"***: READ THE FINE PRINT. It is still a chain. So make sure you know what you are going to be paying for each month. It is more than the advertised value. There is mandatory insurance for every unit. Just make sure you read the paperwork. Just saw a news story about a public storage in Indiana...all of the woman's furniture was covered in mold after leaving it in storage. Same exact thing happened to me at this location. Luckily it was mostly old files -- but there was some keepsakes that were destroyed. When we told the management, it was also met with a shrug. Not good. read more

While I loved the staff (from Jorge and the two African American assistants), I have been renting from this Storage place since April, 2015. To my displeasure and dissatisfaction, I recently found out that they have increased my rate by $15.00 after only having an 8 X 10 for less than a year. When I called the 800-number to question the increase, they referred me back to the contract stating that they are allowed to raise the rent after 6 months. Had I known this about their rental rates, I would have gone to another company. I found the pictures below to be adequate depiction of the facility; however, they do need to provide better lighting so that we can move our belongings around as we store them. Also, the carts should be unlocked during (and after) business hours so that customers can use them at their leisure since they may need to use them (They have cameras on the premises and each customer has to sign in to enter the facility; therefore it makes no sense to lock the carts). There were a lot of hidden fees. The management was nice and helpful. The company itself is one of the world's largest Real Estate Investment Trusts. They have a lot of locations. We used it simply because of that. The interiors are very dark. Our unit was near a power outlet, so we had to plug in one of our own torch lamps in the hallway in order to have any light in the unit at all. I was pushed into or required to take the insurance when I first signed up for storage. I paid $9 a month for close to 5 years. There was a leak in my storage unit and it completely ruined my couch cushions, ruined boxes of pillows and bedding, made my couch disgusting and smells of mildew, same with chairs I had in the unit. Because my property is over 5 years old and I don't have receipts I was offered $60. So because you guys had a leak in your wall and had pressured me to take this insurance that basically offered me nothing for ruining my furniture (which may have been old but was still in really good shape and meant I didn't have to buy new furniture) I'm out $540 in insurance payments and got $60 compensation. $105 to clean my couch and at least $150 to replace my pillows and cushions. Plus the bottle of Febreze I unleashed on everything. The door to the outside was broken for at least 4 days (that I know of) so it was like 30 degrees in my unit while I was trying to repack things and get moved out of the unit. People can easily follow you in on foot or by car when you come through the gate so I never really felt safe in there at night. Don't store here and definitely don't take the insurance because it's complete garbage. read more

Facility is clean and orderly. Staff are friendly, professional, and courteous. Reasonably priced. My only complaint is that storage units are not climate controlled, so be aware as you store items over freezing winters and sweltering summers. I have used this facility with multiple units over nearly a decade without incident. They have provided me complete peace of mind as I moved among several properties in adjoining states to care for elderly and ill family members, etc. I recommend them without hesitation. read more

I have rented from many facilities in the past but this is my first experience with Public Storage. I went to them because they had a storage space on ground level. Much easier. The process to get things going was fine except there is hardly a staff member on site, ever. I left a message 3 months ago that never go returned but wasn't a big deal so I never followed up. Here is the kicker: This company is the definition of LOAN SHARKS. I rented a space for 309 a month with the second month free starting at the end of April. Five months later, as in today I receive an email that the rent will go up to $390. By my calculations that's a 30% increase. Really? Are you kidding me? I called their customer service and all I got was 'too bad, so sad', that's the way our business works', I then called corporate and they just transferred me to customer service. Truly a joke. So they give you the second month free knowing they will jack up the rent to pay for the second month free over time. They must think people are very stupid. I will cancel my contract of course as I'd rather throw the stuff out then give them one dollar more. As I have said I have rented from other storage locations, in fact for years and never had an increase let alone a 30%. This company is awful. I will also follow up with the BBB. read more

This location is extremely predatory, disorganized, and has extremely poor customer service. Although I moved out of the unit, paid the last month after coming to an agreement with an employee because I moved out after the 1st, they are still charging me rent after they have lost my key and failed to follow through with the agreement made between me and their employee. Their reasoning for this is that either the employee who was there when I dropped off my key is no longer employed or the employee with whom I made the deal is no longer employed. They have been ignoring my phone calls and I am seeing no way to resolve this situation as "corporate" continues sending me back to the people who are ignoring my phone calls or hanging up on me (Sheena) to resolve the situation. I needed a storage unit last minute and gave this place a try due to its location...easily accessible off of Broadway. Both Jorge and Bill were very helpful and kind. Jorge made the process very quick and easy. Bill was training on the day I was there and did a great job! As others mentioned, there were one-time fees that weren't advertised, but I wasn't surprised. This is still a chain and most places have one time initial set-up or administrative charges. I view storage as I would a sliding scale. What I mean by that is that there are some items I would not place in any storage location such as clothes, sofas, cushions, and the like. But wooden furniture, hardware, and items that are well-sealed from marauding critters are what I personally store in storage. Having chosen the items, the next thing on my satisfaction list is time and efficiency in finding the right unit and completing the contract. I simply can't put up with issues that drag on as though there's no end in sight. That's where the staff at 5643 N. Broadway, Chicago deliver. They're so efficient and are usually two steps of even me. They know what my next question is before I get around to going into detail and are ready to elaborate on the service so that I walk away with the best possible outcome. For that reason, they are the best in this business. I can usually zoom in and out in minutes which makes the service all more worthwhile.
