The experience was great! (description of the experience below.) The billing was twisted. When signing up we had a quote for the amount of items and $60 for any pick up or drop off appointments. At some point during the time we stored with them they changed their policy so the appointment fee to drop off our things back to us after storage is $800! Its highly inconsiderate and unimaginable to have customers sign up for $60 fees and change that to $800 after the agreement was already made, and they have the customer's items. I cannot understand a change like that, and will be reaching out to their billing department to dispute this charge. Makespace is an efficient moving and storage combo company. The process of preparing made sense; we told the company what items we needed stored and they sent us bags so we can pack ahead of time. We were able to work with Rick and Travis who did great jobs moving us out of one place and in to our next place. Rick is a friendly, outspoken personable character; he has a lot of moving knowledge that was helpful for breaking down furniture and placement of furniture. The customer service was helpful when we called to make appointments or discuss billing. We were able to go to the storage facility to drop off additional storage items. I used to LOVE MakeSpace and recommend them. I also had no issues giving them $400/month for a significant amount of storage and tipping their guys well when they'd pick up and drop off. Then today's nightmare. I'm closing on my home sale Friday and need to be moved out. On Tuesday of this week, they couldn't accommodate a Friday pickup. OK Fine, I go out and hire another moving company (pay $600 instead of $60 pickup fee - I can live with this). Then they had an opening come up in their app, I book, receive a confirmation, and confirm my pickup list. I cancel my other movers, only to find out that they unilaterally cancelled my booking hours later. Message to future customers: Make sure you plan a week in advance if you want them to pick anything up from you and don't trust their confirmations! read more

The start of what seemed like an easy and convenience free move, turned into a total freaking nightmare. Scheduled time 8am-11am. I did not receive a call or update after that time slot passed to tell me "hey they are running late". After waiting on hold for 20mins, I was told 12-12:15pm. It's 12:30, no call or update. I call, sit on hold for 20mins only to be told they are not dispatching any more drivers today...WHAT!? it's the 31st, last day of my lease. The only time available is the June 7th. The dispatcher says, "sounds like that's not going to work, I suggest to try and find someone else". From start to finish, I wasted an entire day dealing with this trash of a company. My experience with MakeSpace was good until I decided to get my items back. One of the reasons I decided for them was that they claimed to have flexible arrangements and, I'll quote the exact terms they used: "All future appointments cost a flat fee of just $59". Now that I need my items back I just found out they changed their pricing terms halfway through and their fee went up to a WHOPPING $799. And, to make matters worse, the soonest date they have is a week out - even if I wanted to pick it up myself (and guess what, there's a $399 fee for that). Updating prices because of the market is one thing, but entirely overhauling the price structure and then applying it retroactively to existing contracts is nothing short of a SCAM. I love the App for my phone so I can easily keep track of everything stored. They drop off & pick up stuff once a month for FREE. I have now decided to move from Chicago to Seattle & I hired a mover to pick up all my stuff from MakeSpace in Chicago & bring it to MakeSpace in Seattle. This company is a scam. I thought it seemed great at first - but now I am moving and starting to realize how much of a rip off it is. First, we learned about a new policy where we have to pay $260 just to get our belongings out of storage (in addition to the monthly fee). Then, I was notified we won't receive a prorated refund for taking out items out in the middle of the billing cycle. Yes, I realize this was probably all written out in the terms agreement...but this kind of stuff is just poor business practices. Oh, and if your new home is outside their (very small) service area, you'll be paying $200+ (for someone who didn't know where we would be moving in the Chicagoland area, this was disappointing!) It just keeps getting worse.... If you decide to store with this company, just make sure you read the fine print before moving forward. But beware, there's a good chance they will change their policies on you without much notice! At the end of the day, it's not any less expensive than the other storage companies out there (who offer much better customer service and more professional movers.) One of the biggest reasons I picked MakeSpace for storage was how easy it is to schedule/request delivery. From a technology standpoint, it's quite impressive. I believe they do a really good job with integrating their technology and marketing to customers. Unfortunately, that's where it stops. While they have a solid business model, their execution is THE ABSOLUTE WORST. Let me preface this by saying that my storage unit had nearly 200 pieces so my storage space, I would guess, is probably on the larger side of their average customer. That said, MakeSpace was completely irresponsible and unprofessional with my belongings. Here are my biggest complaints: * They failed to deliver all requested items on a specific day delaying our move. * They lost 3 mattress box springs (think about that for a second, how does one misplace an item that large - and 3 of them, for that matter!) ** In the end, they damaged nearly all of my furniture worth over $7,000 (see pictures attached). For a company whose sole business is delivering and storing items, this company did not deliver on any accounts. I really regret choosing MakeSpace. It's a false advertisement. The movers are not as "pro" as stated on their website. The company and staff took an advantage of the customers that couldn't do much with the moving, and provide bad services that's totally not acceptable. And the movers did not follow CoVID 19 practice. Below are my frustration today, specifically with the mover named Louise. 1. The two movers arrived late. The elevator that I reserved is for 1-4pm. By 2pm, they still didn't show up and I started to worry that they wouldn't have enough time to move everything. I called (and no one answered the call), texted (no one replied), and emailed multiple times. Finally someone answered and told me the movers were one their way. They arrived at 2:53pm, left only about one hour to finish the disassembling and moving. 2. On their website they stated the movers will disassemble the furniture for you. However, in reality, they didn't have the right tool. The movers had difficulty to disassemble my IKEA bed, stating the brand was special and wouldn't allow regular tool. But IKEA is such a common brand. If the company promised they would disassemble the furniture, how come they were not prepared with the right tool for common brands? Given they were late, they were rushing to disassemble the bed, and I witnessed Louise damaged the bed by twisting off the metal part that was supposed to detached by using screw driver. Now I had to worry that if the furniture can be assembled back, or if it would be permanently damaged. 3. Louise refused to take marble table, stating the table would be damaged for sure if they took it. However, on their website, nowhere stated that the staff would refuse to take furniture. For the reference, the website said movers will come with free moving blankets and carefully wrap the carry staff -- if that's the case, why would they damage the marble table? and refuse to take it? 4. Towards the end of the pick up window, I noticed the mirror that I selected as a moving item was still not moved. I escalated to Louise, he then said they would only take 19 items. I told him mirror was one of the 19 items that I selected. Even if it's an extra item, there should still be space because the marble table was not taken. Louise then pulled up his list, I noticed his list was not updated, and he kept saying he did not look at the item list, and he blamed "this is why you shouldn't add items last minute". I said the mirror was selected from way back. He then told me if I insisted on moving the mirror, he would charge me $15 for packing. But wait, isn't packing free as stated on your website? Aren't your website said you will provide free bags, bins, and moving blanket? At this point, I told him the mirror must be taken as that's what I paid for and put in the list. He then refused to take it due to it's on the wall. He said they couldn't take anything that's attached on the wall. He said it was on the website (and I checked the website later on - it was not stated on the website). After I told him that I was not strong enough to take down the mirror from the wall, and asked if he could help me, he refused to do so and restated that he would not take anything from the wall. 5. After going through above, I was already reaching a very frustrating point. I told him this is not acceptable as none of above was mentioned on the website. He said, you must not read the website, go read the website. I asked him to point it to me where it was on the website, and he pretended he couldn't hear me. He said he couldn't hear me because I was wearing the mask. I then volumed up. He responded I was yelling at him. The communication was so unprofessional at this point. For every question I asked, Louise only had one answer "go check the website or talk to customer service. This is the only thing we can do. We just pick up your stuff for storage. We are not professional movers." When I asked him what I should do the next after the furniture was moved. He then answered, as if I asked a really stupid question, "you didn't read the website right? go read the website". As he was leaving I said the service was not acceptable at all and I would escalated it to the management, he responded in laughs and just left, as if I said something that really didn't matter or would impact their approach of the service. 6. The worst part is, one of the movers borrowed my bathroom. After they left, I found out he took a dump and did not flush the toilet. And he left a used mask right next to the toilet. Is this how MakeSpace follow COVID 19 practice? Is this what "pro" movers should do? Worst service ever. read more

Just started with MakeSpace; given I am moving for the first time in over a decade and not sure all my books/CDs/assorted stuff will fit in my smaller place (where does it all COME from? -smile-) My team just finished their pickup; they arrived pretty close to the end of the time range we discussed (umm . . . ). But once here, they were all business, and managed to squiggle my couch out the door despite my leaving not too much elbow room. They were also able to upgrade my space request on just a couple of days notice. I used Makespace to pick up my items in Chicago in June and store them for ~1 month until I was moving to Evanston in July. Makespace seemed like the best option for a short-term move + store + move. It was a small move, but they still managed to break several items. My TV was put in bubble wrap and tagged as fragile, but the screen was cracked and completely unusable when I received it back. They also moved an expensive hallway table, which included a glass table top when they picked it up, but the glass piece was missing when the item was returned to me, probably because they broke the glass during the move. Lastly, they loaded several of my picture frames into my dresser drawers (without wrapping them at all), then proceeded to wrap up the dresser and move it as one piece. Not surprisingly, the picture frames inside the drawer slid around during the move so that the glass was shattered by the time the dresser made its way back to me. This instance, in particular, was completely irresponsible on the movers' behalf - not sure what they were thinking. Makespace has a claims process whereby you can document the broken items and request reimbursement for the broken/lost items. However, each item is reviewed individually and has a $250 maximum reimbursement value. I am currently waiting to hear back from the claims department. IMPORTANT PIECE OF ADVICE - ask the movers to cut off all cardboard/plastic wrapping from all items before they leave. They told me they didn't have time, so I spent hours cutting through all of the wrapping and wasn't able to notice the damaged items until after the moving team was gone. UPDATE - Claim for TV was rejected because "it's a fragile item and MakeSpace recommends that its customers not store fragile items for this reason". Claim for missing glass top is being processed, but requires replacement quotes from multiple sources during the review. FINAL REVIEW - Overall negative experience - MakeSpace is a convenient option, but they are very prone to damaging or losing your items during the process. read more

I wish that zero stars was an option. My boyfriend and I put some of our belongings in storage for 3 months in between moves. We called-- twice-- and said we wanted everything to be delivered. Yet, somehow, they forgot the couch. The single largest item that we put in storage. We were also informed by the moving team that the warehouse forgot three items that they were able to catch. Wtf? How does this happen? Additionally, as we are unpacking now, we are finding a ton of broken items. Pint glasses that we wrapped and stored in a guitar case are broken. A brand new dish that was wrapped and stored in a box is broken. I understand that it's a risk to put items in storage, but about half of our things are broken. This company seems to be scattered, careless, and incompetent. Skip them. UPDATE: In addition to the couch STILL missing, we are also missing our bed headboard and box spring. TLDR: they broke my television, have lost some of my belongings (it's been over a week), overcharged me for a number of months, and are making me pay a full month for a weeks worth of storage. I have been a customer of MakeSpace for about two years (April 28 2016 they picked up my items). I moved out of an apartment to my parents home and back out this month (May 5th 2018). They initially started me at $169 per month, then there was an audit some months in and they were overcharging me for space so they credited and lowered my rate to $139. There was a time that I requested they deliver some items back to me for me to keep (so I had less warehouse space), except they started charging me MORE again for less stuff, until I called and got another credit and back to my normal rate. On 04/28/18 I was charged my monthly fee. I was under the impression that whenever I cancelled my membership they would refund me the prorated amount for whatever days were left in the billing period that I did not have anything stored. I just requested ALL my approximately 40 items back in late April/early May 2018 and on delivery day got MOST of them back with an accompanying customer service call to let me know ELEVEN of my items are essentially MIA and they'll get back in touch with me when it's located for delivery. And they'd be waiving my $20 delivery fee. Ok. I unpacked what I had delivered and my 50 inch TV screen was shattered. Shattered. The missing items included my bedsheets and lamps, photos and other personal items, video games, an original Super Nintendo etc etc. I needed to go spend money to buy sheets and other lost household items. NOW, I've spent a couple hundred dollars for necessities they have lost. I have to file a claim for that and for the broken TV. I called for an update since I haven't heard anything was missing for a week, now-- and the agent said no update had been made to the system. A friend told me about MakeSpace and I am so glad I went with them. They made the move so simple and are very prepared when they arrive for the appointment. Travis and Tyrone took about two hours total to move my stuff up and down a flight of stairs. So fast and efficient. They wrapped up my furniture, bed and frame, TVs, and boxed up my artwork. They were very knowledgeable about how to pack things and where they were going - and answered all of my questions! My move with MakeSpace turned out real well. Everything fit in the truck they brought, and the two guys kept working until the last item was photographed and loaded. The only thing that got me nervous when they first arrived is, they said my stuff would never fit the 10x15" I booked, and then they changed the story and said they were only to pick up a few items. After about 90 minutes of sitting in their truck, a manager called and I explained the storage unit was to be emptied and these guys can begin whenever they are ready. MakeSpace is a godsend, and I can't stop telling people about my experience with them. When I recently had to suddenly move, I had four days to pack and vacate a 2-bedroom apartment and decided to go with putting it all storage. When researching storage options I came across MakeSpace, which not only covered my storage needs but also boxes/bins AND movers, all in one service. My customer service with David on the phone to make the booking was exceptionally helpful, and they were able to accommodate me right away even at the end of a month. Rick came to deliver my boxes and he was also incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and kind. Travis and Derrick were my movers, and I've never come across more thorough, efficient, and caring movers (even after a recent experience using Dolly). They bring their own bubble wrap, blankets, tape, etc. and take great care in wrapping your furniture and precious things, and even disassembled some pieces. They easily accommodated everything that didn't fit in bins too, "barcoding" each and every item with custom stickers. I am now able to view each one of my boxes/things in storage in the MakeSpace app, all 85 of them. I can't imagine the logistics in place to make this happen, and such a seamless customer experience, but I am so impressed! On top of this all, the first pickup is free for a new customer so it was an unbelievable deal. I couldn't imagine being more at ease during a whole, sudden moving process, especially after a very stressful apartment situation. They honestly made it all relatively pain-free. We used MakeSpace to store our large furniture while we remodeled our home. Pickup was a snap, the team packed up all of our large pieces professionally, took pictures and tagged each item, and loaded them up and took them away. Seven months later, they brought everything back into the finished house. No scratches or dents on furniture or the house. There was one issue where a mattress did not make it onto the truck, but the team came up with a solution without my involvement, and in less than an hour they returned with the mattress. Even though there was an issue, I'm still giving 5 stars because the team fixed the issue quickly and on their own. I highly recommend using MakeSpace for storage. Keep in mind there is a 3 month minimum, but the monthly price is competitive with a POD. And unlike a POD, you don't have to pack and load large items by yourself. We've had four separate in-person experiences with MakeSpace: dropping off bins, picking up our stuff, and delivering our stuff in two batches. All in all, it made for the most manageable move we've ever had. The app made everything easy to manage, and scheduling the dates was also a simple experience. By far, though, the best part of our MakeSpace experience has been the people. Everyone we've worked with, including Jeffrey, Craig, Henri, Richard and Travis, have been professional, efficient, and extremely delightful. To whoever's doing the hiring and whatever you're doing to attract and retain talent, keep it up! We're reserving one star from our review due to an issue we had insuring our items and subsequent damage. We wanted to upgrade our insurance package after our stuff was picked up, but were unable to upgrade the policy and not given any real explanation as to why. Subsequently, one of our pieces was broken during processing. Luckily, it wasn't anything particularly valuable, and they were proactive about notifying us right away, but still we would have been upset if something more substantive got damaged after we asked for but were denied insurance. read more

First pickup today... storing about 10 bins of clothing, Halloween decorations and costumes, chaise lounges, misc. the technology and communication has been great so far. Texted me up until pickup day with reminders. There was a snowstorm today, so I received a text stating that they may be at the late end of the window. Texted me when 10-20 minutes out. They were a bit late, but hey, snowstorm. Three men showed up in uniform, introduced themselves and shook my hand. Very professional and friendly. Big truck labeled MakeSpace. They labeled each item with a QR code sticker in multiple places. Took pics of all the codes. I was ready by having all my items labelled with name, number, address and contents. They were here for about 5 min. Loaded a roller cart with my stuff and took it to the truck. Said would wrap my chaise with blanket in the truck. Came back and had me sign on mobile device. Thanks to Barrack and the other two. Sorry, forgot their names. Quick and easy! 5 stars so far. Will check back again when I'm sure nothing was lost or damaged. read more

Okay, so in a pinch I decided to enlist these guys to store some bins of docs and things. They quoted me at $19 a month for about five bins of items, and told me only that I had to pay them a minimum of three months. I have five bins packed. Shortly before pickup, I discovered that I also needed to store a small couch. I called them in a pinch and asked about adding it to storage with my stored bins. They said okay and that my rate may increase slightly. No adjusted quote was given, even though I advised them of the dimensions of the couch (it was about the size of at most 4 other bins, and easily portable). However, they did mention that 10 bins of items should only cost about $39 a month, so I figured it shouldn't be much more than that to add the couch. Everything gets picked up, and then I receive my bill. They increased my rate from $19 a month to $69 a month! Even the 10 bin rate was only $39, and this couch was not anywhere as large as 5 bins, nor was it unwieldy. However, I was also assured that my rate would change if I had items dropped off before the next billing cycle. Okay, fine, I'll have the couch delivered for a $20 fee, and then they'll bill the next two months at the 5 bin rate of $19. I have the couch delivered. The rate doesn't change. I contact support and they insist that the three month minimum must be billed at my original rate upon pickup. THEY DID NOT MENTION THAT UP FRONT. THEIR FAQ DOES NOT MENTION THIS. In fact, their FAQ states that when you have a dropoff, your rate should change to reflect the new cost. They only assured me that I would be charged for a minimum of three months, not that my rate would be locked in. So basically I am guaranteed to have an extra $100 ripped from me thanks to shady bait and switch sales tactics from their New York office. Be warned. They will do the same to you. This is apparently part of their business plan. In the end, it may still be more cost effective for you to eat that kind of bait and switch price gouging than to hire movers or store your stuff elsewhere. But needless to say, I'm getting the rest of my items back before 3 months, closing my account, and I am not only never doing business with these guys again, but will actively discourage anyone I know from doing business with them. read more

MAKESPACE? MORE LIKE MURPHY'S LAW! *Be aware that most of Makespace's 5 star reviews are posted RIGHT AFTER Makespace hauls people's stuff away. In fact, my review WOULD HAVE BEEN 5 stars had I written it ON move-out day rather than months later. So pay attention to the reviews posted AFTER people's stuff is returned to them. You'll notice these ratings are far lower than 5 stars.* What went wrong: In short: literally everything. 1. I was living in a ~500 sq ft studio apartment. They quoted me between $70-$110 per month (low and high estimates) to store the contents of my studio while I looked for a new apartment. They ended up charging me $170 per month ($60-$100 per month ABOVE what I was quoted) for a 10x15 space, which according to their website is approx. enough to hold the contents of a 2 bedroom apartment, but by that time they already had my stuff so I was stuck. Something seemed off. 2. Turns out they were charging me to store SOMEONE ELSE'S gigantic entertainment center and who knows what else b/c their barcode system isn't as foolproof as they would like their customers to believe. I wonder what would have happened if I DIDN'T tell them it wasn't mine when they delivered it. Someone would be wondering where their stuff is! 3. So of course it made me wonder where my $1,400 BRAND NEW sofa was, because it didn't come with the first delivery -- even though ALL of my stuff was SUPPOSED to be delivered on the same day (July 5). It took them a MONTH to finally find my sofa (after sending me a photo of someone else's dirty sofa asking if it was mine -- it wasn't, AND after multiple calls back and forth trying to figure out WHERE ON EARTH they could have misplaced such a large item) and it took them yet another WEEK to finally deliver it to me. 4. In the first delivery, almost every single large item I stored with them was either destroyed beyond repair, damaged, or lost. It took them a A MONTH AND A HALF to find my ladder (which I needed for my move-in to paint etc). They even managed to break my expensive SOLID METAL side table. One of the metal legs was literally broken off and never found. They shattered 2 mirrors and 2 cabinets. MY BELONGINGS WERE DELIVERED TO ME IN PIECES. I have over a dozen claims in the system waiting to be resolved. 5. I keep getting charged DELIVERY FEES ($20 each time) for the 4+ times they have had to come to my place to deliver items they forgot to deliver on my original delivery date. This is on top of the time I have had to take out of my days, missing work (and money) numerous times to deal with THEIR incompetence --AND THEY'RE CHARGING ME FOR IT. I have to call them each time so they'll refund the charge, adding yet ANOTHER layer of inconvenience. 6. On top of the bogus delivery charges, I keep getting charged STORAGE FEES even long after my last item was SUPPOSED to have been returned to me on July 5. I have to check my credit card every week to make sure they haven't automatically charged it again and I have to call and tell them to stop charging me to store ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. 7. I've had to spend HOURS on the phone (based on my phone records) with various people at Makespace trying to resolve all of the above issues for the past TWO MONTHS, many of whom are no longer with the company. There seems to be a revolving door of people either getting fired or leaving, new management all the time, and hardly any continuity. I've had to spend so much time and energy with this ordeal explaining the various things they've messed up over and over to different people, gathering info/taking photos for 12+ claims, waiting for late delivery people multiple times, even writing this Yelp review. They assure me almost every time I call that "this never happens" but with how many times they've managed to screw things up just with MY case, I find that impossible to believe. What they SAID they would do to resolve these many issues: 1. Reimburse ONLY HALF of my total monthly storage cost since I was paying to store someone else's items AND since I was paying to store items which were ultimately damaged/completely destroyed by Makespace. A pittance for the stress/inconvenience I've been put through. 2. Reimburse me for the many large items they broke/destroyed. I had to file a claim for each one of the 12+ large items I was storing with them, which means they managed to break or completely destroy almost every single large item I payed for and trusted them to care for). Too bad they don't tell you till AFTER they break/lose your stuff there's a *$250 PER ITEM LIMIT* on claim reimbursements. (So theoretically my $1,400 brand new sofa would have been reimbursed ONLY UP TO $250 had they not been able to miraculously find it.) *I have not received a penny of any of these reimbursements so far.* In conclusion: IF I DIDN'T CARE ABOUT MY STUFF, I WOULD HAVE SAVED MYSELF A BUNCH OF TIME AND JUST THROWN IT IN THE TRASH MYSELF RATHER THAN PAY MAKESPACE TO TRASH MY STUFF FOR ME. read more

Make Space should be a moving/storage standard for similar companies. I have been with them for a year now, moved a couple of times and they have been super flexible in accommodating all my moving needs at no unnecessary hidden costs. Great company. Great people. The way that they make it easy to store our overflow. No problem when I had to change pick-up times. Also they were here and loaded 20 plus boxes in less than 5 minutes. Polite and courteous and helpful. Great job guys!!! read more

Makespace lost my TV and several miscellaneous boxes and damaged 3 pieces of furniture. I did not get a concrete answer of where my item was for a week, and still haven't gotten answers for my claim about the damaged pieces of furniture. I also used them because they claimed that the first 2 hours of packing stuff where free, but ended up charging me $100 for extra hours of packing, when the guys were obviously SUPER SLOW packing stuff up. After I called thousands of times and I finally got someone to answer me, they kept telling me they would call me back and they wouldn't. I finally got my TV back but haven't got an answer about my furniture claim. I also learned about their $250 policy AFTER they already charged me for the first 3 months. I thought it was a great service because of convenience and how they communicated they would make it easy on you to move, help you with the bins, pack, and unpack, but they just gave me one problem after the other and I haven't gotten any answer about my damaged furniture. I used them to protect my items from getting damaged, but it was worse than using a traditional moving company. read more
