Never mind the original 5 and then 2 stars. I find that every couple of months my interaction with this company drives down my rating. I went to finally get all of my books organized. I have hundreds of books, so it took a while to find time. I realized that I missing 20+ graphic novels and at least 60 regular books. Roughly 2 bins worth of books. Since they lost my couch for a few days, I shouldn't be surprised that they misplaced bins as well. I'm never getting those books back and they are 'certain' they delivered everything. I'm also just getting confirmation that my claims check will arrive for the damages during the move 5 months ago. This company's competitive advantage is that it makes use of efficiency and organization to beat it's competitors on price and convenience. But since they aren't efficient or organized, they basically have a concept with zero follow-through. read more

They moved me into the same size storage space for $50.00 cheaper and the two pick-ups I had went so smoothly that I was amazed! I was so excited to find a company that could move and store my stuff, as I was having a complicated move. To say Makespace is a disappointment would be an understatement. They not only broke a large amount of my stuff (including family heirlooms and a TV that wouldn't even turn on) but their inappropriate movers made comments that can only be described as sexual harassment. If you want Makespace to make good on their faults and refund you for their damages, expect to call them every day for two months and get nothing. I will have to take them to small claims court to get the over $3,000 worth of damages they caused resolved. The guys at MakeSpace are AWESOME. They called ahead, arrived on time, were super friendly, did the best job wrapping up all my valuables, bed mattress, shelves and TV to protect them for a full apartment move (which btw was free as it was my first pickup). They went above and beyond by taking my Goodwill items away for drop-off, AND took a huge planter downstairs to the dumpster for me. I am truly impressed with this service not only based on this experience, but with the way the business model is structured. They are making my move across country spectacularly easy, and I've already recommended them to all my friends/family! When I'm ready to take all my stuff to my new place, they told me to have the moving company pick up my stuff at their warehouse and MakeSpace will actually do the work of moving my stuff onto the truck. Hands down best business, service and people! Plus their monthly storage pricing is unbelievably affordable. The one thing to note is that you're not supposed to pack liquids as the warehouse is not climate controlled - makes sense. Everything about this service has been fantastic! Here's the lowdown - they deliver these green bags (think blue IKEA bags) that you fill and label with your stuff. And then they put those bags in green containers which get labeled, and scanned, when they pick up. MakeSpace takes your stuff away and delivers once a month - for free! - with up to an hour of free labor. After the first hour it's $50/hr/person. Clocks starts when they pull up to your front door. You decide what you'd like delivered and when. And, since they scan all items and send you pics, choosing items you want delivered is, theoretically, a breeze. For our scenario, we have a several week gap between moving out of our house and into a new one. We needed a solution that was all encompassing - 50 complimentary containers (saved some serious cash there), NO CHARGE FOR PICK-UP (what the wha?!?!), wrap and store our items, and deliver when we're ready. All in all, this was the best deal I could find. And to top it off, everyone I've spoken with on the phone has been great. But the real heroes here are the movers themselves. The guys doing the scanning, organizing and the heavy lifting. Tyler, Tyrone, Darek and Justin are awesome. Friendly, funny, efficient and courteous. I used this service through the recommendation of a friend and I was totally pleased with the entire experience. The crew of three showed up on time, wrapped up all my furniture and moved all the bins into the truck in about an hour. They moved pretty much the contents of a 1 bedroom apartment and they did I expertly and quickly. I stumbled across this company last year while transitioning between a 2 bedroom apartment to a studio. I'm happy that I did because my experience has been excellent. Having the ability to view my items via the website or an app is genius. Their process makes life easy if you don't have a car in the city, which most people don't. They are a great option for storage. We had Rick and Henry show up for picking our stuff up. They were polite, diligent and meticulous with the packing and moving. They ensured every item was tagged, packed and padded well to ensure safekeeping. They were also very quick to get everything stored! So, my experience with Makespace was interesting. Very good in the beginning, not so great in the middle but fantastic at the end, but all of my needs were accomplished and issues dealt with in a timely manner which is all I can ask for (as things ALWAYS happen during a move). During my move there were some miscommunications about price, some damage done to flooring by movers and a piece was left behind. It took me a while to get a hold of someone at Makespace which was very frustrating, but once I got a hold of Juanita she made everything right, and then some. They agreed upon a fair price and storage for my space, they approved the damage repair and are sending me funds to have the repair done and scheduled a pick-up of the item left behind the next day. I would definitely use them again, if there a few hiccups, rest assured Makespace will do the right thing, as they did in my case to make your experience a good one. Makespace was a lifesaver for me! I am terrified of moving as I consider it to be one of the most stressful activities in life... On top of that, I cannot drive so I was looking for a moving/storage solution that would make my move as easy as possible without having to drive to storage places. Makespace was the perfect solution as they not only stored my boxes but also covered all of the pickups and drop offs. They were always on time - and they will text you about 10 minutes before they arrive so that you can get ready to pick up your bins. The bins are very sturdy and eco-friendly as they are reusable plastic bins. All of the scheduling and payment is done online, allowing you to pay and schedule without having to pick up the phone. Joe and Adam were in charge of my move and they were extremely friendly. They were willing to move all of my boxes to my new apartment on the second floor which I really appreciated. If I could give 0 stars I would. First this is the most unorganized company with the absolute worst communication and customer service. We scheduled a pick up and were told that they wouldnt pick It up all at one time but instead two separate days. On the day of our first scheduled pick up 12-3 no one showed up. I had to call at 3 pm and ask where the movers were and eventually someone finally showed up. When I asked them to wear masks because they weren't wearing any during a a pandemic, one left for about 10 minutes and came back With a T-shirt wrapped around his face that fell off the entire time. On the following day for our second pick up, they called to cancel it saying they couldn't have anyone pick it up for another week because too many drivers cancelled. This is the most UNRELIABLE company. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. I urge you to use any other company over this. It's not worth the frustration. It's amazing this place is still in business. read more

They also looked over the furniture that I want moved and answered all my questions. Very knowledgeable about how things will be moved. I was happy with this company at first. The movers were friendly and careful with my items. However, it is the corporate side of things I have a big issue with. Upon requesting items be returned to me they did not return all the items which were requested. It is impossible to get in touch with customer service (no one answers the phones and after 40 minutes on hold they hang up on you) and email responses are very very delayed. On top of not returning my items when initially requested they are now holding on to the remaining few items and still charging for "storage." They are holding these items hostage and requiring me to pay for ANOTHER delivery. Will not be using them again and do not recommend unless you plan to permanently store your items. read more

I stored half of my apartment with them, and they charged me nothing at pickup. Sure, we will com back and charge you again. Oh, we didn't pick up some stuff you wanted stored at the delivery because our truck was broken or didn't haven space? Sure- we will come back at charge you "$30 an hour per person with a 1 hour minimum". Oh, we scuffed up half of your entrance way? Sure...here is the 4 page claim, with 2 required quotes for you to submit for the $100 it will cost you to fix...oh, you want to talk about a credit to your account for how CRAPPY our service was? Had a wonderful experience with this company. After being quoted $$$$ by large trucking company to take our stuff and hold it while we found a new place to live, MakeSpace sounded almost too good to be true. They were wonderful on the phone, answering all my questions, texted when they were nearby for dropoff of bins and pickups and deliveries and all around great experience. The bins themselves were a life saver, allowing us to save on boxes, and they wrapped up our other mattresses and couches. Final update: I did hear back from MakeSpace and they were not able to find any of my missing things. I think that there was a bin maybe two that went missing. While they did reimburse me $250 for the claim (making it a total of $500 I got from the damaged item and my lost goods), this is a fraction of the original prices of all the goods I lost. I really loved how prompt they were with moving my stuff in and out, but now I am not so sure goods are secured in a reliable way once they get to the storage facilities. I wish I could have recovered some of my goods. read more

This company does NOT service any area that is majority Black. No south side zip codes and no south suburbs. There are tens of thousands of well to do, middle class families in these area but this company igores them. This is blatant discrimination. Any downtown, loop or north side zips, or western and northern suburban zips are fine- with likely white customers. I say this as someone who knows how hard it is to move all her belongings up three flights of a walk up; Tyrone and Martin, my movers, were absolutely fantastic. To begin with, there was no space to park their truck on my street that was a one way, but they never complained once. Tyrone/Martin (I'm forgetting their respective names so they might be switched in the following review) got to work and lugged my VERY HEAVY items down three flights of stairs of a building without air conditioning. I witnessed Tyrone being beeped and screamed at despite there being just enough space for a decent sized vehicle to go by without a scratch. Tyrone even went as far to direct traffic to ensure very rude individuals got by which meant Martin had to do the job of two men. Eventually, an impatient driver took it upon themselves to call the police. Thankfully, nothing occurred and the police led the fleet of stalled cars down the opposite way. I asked if I could help and they waved me off, insisting it was their job and they were happy to help. They never once got upset or showed discomfort at the situation despite the job being sweaty and being berated in the meanwhile. These men were some of the loveliest people I've ever met that I felt terrible that I had even called in the service and made them experience such unfortunate circumstances. They were calm, cool, collected, affable, and LOVELY. Moving out is such a stressful, anxiety inducing time but I felt complete reassured and relaxed because of Tyrone and Martin. I can't possibly thank them enough or convey how wonderful they were. The MakeSpace team is truly a well run and staffed operation. read more

Getting my stuff back has been an absolute nightmare, and I'm positive they're doing something illegal. I assumed that, like literally every other storage service, I'd be able to pick up my own stuff whenever I was ready to move back into an apartment. Apparently you need to make an appointment to even pick up your stuff yourself, with no help moving - AND they charge you 70$ anyways. No one communicated this to me!! So, when I called them on my drive to my new apartment to ask what times I'd be able to retrieve my things, I was informed that they were booked for almost a MONTH and I wouldn't be able to pick up my bare essentials like my mattress, bedframe, etc... until then. Despite spending hours on the phone with them, their representatives were unable to resolve the issue and refused to put me in touch with anyone higher in the command chain. If I didn't have a friend to stay with, I'd be sleeping on the floor of an empty apartment for weeks until the next open appointment. I have no idea how this is legal - they're keeping my property without my permission, AND charging me for the additional month that they are non-consensually storing my belongings. In summary, don't give these people your money. (However, the movers were very nice and efficient when I was initially storing my stuff!) read more

I have moved 9 times in 8 years in Chicago and today's movie was the easiest by far. From the beginning talking to Kimberly on customer service to set up the appointments it was clear that this company cared about me and all my stuff. The three gentlemen I remember Joey and Travis and the guy in charge I can't remember his name but they were so helpful and they wrapped all my furniture with such care we were planning on only to being a certain amount but by the end of it they were so great that we had to tip them $100 from top to bottom I think it only took an hour and a half for them to get all of our stuff safely into the truck. I don't usually post Yelp reviews but I wanted to make others aware of the unprofessional and overall horrifying experience that was MakeSpace. After only 3 months in storage, over half of my belongings are covered in scratches. The bolts for the mirror attached to the dresser are missing. About 10 glasses/dishware items were broken, including two brand new things. My couch is missing. The headboard to my bed is missing. The box spring is missing. I've moved three times in the last year and I NEVER had this experience before. Please save yourself the stress and agony and go with any other company. read more
