Fish n chips
Jinny C.

Glad I got to try this place during my visit to Bainbridge! Got the fish n chips and it was hot, fresh, and a good portion size. The fish was flaky with a thin fried coating. The mushy peas had a strong mint flavor, which I liked. Tasted like a fresh mint chutney. My friend got the chowder, which was made with cod that day, and it tasted great. Creamy without being too rich. Not fishy either. Friendly service, both counter and table. Cute and casual place inside with outdoor seating options as well. Bathroom inside the building.

Proper fish was incredible. Everyone inside the restaurant is so nice and welcoming. That enough makes me want to come back again. There was a semi-long line but our food came out in 15-20 minutes. Not too bad considering how much food we ordered. Everything came out nice and fresh. The fish was also huge! It was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I was surprised how small the building looked and still had plenty of seating. However, the weather was nice outside and it helped cool down the food a bit by being in the nice crisp air. I'd definitely recommend this place!

Excellent fish and chips in a comfortable setting with friendly service. The portion was generous, the fish hot, the batter crunchy and the mashed peas a delicious and unexpected touch. The tartar sauce was delicious as well. For me definitely worth the trip from Seattle. I'll be back!

Visited here on our trip to Bainbridge Island and it seems like this was highly recommended. Cod chowder (5/5): Perfect for a cold day. Still prefer the clam version, but this was perfectly seasoned and comforting. Fish and chips (5/5): fish and chips usually doesn't satisfy me, but holy crap this one was massive. Not only was it humongous, but it was also perfectly fried. The sauces were also great to experiment with. Overall this has got to be your go-to spot when visiting the island.

Piping hot and delicious cod chowder

My friend's husband recommended Proper Fish for fish and chips and I'm so glad he did. We heard it's supposed to be Seattle's top fish and chip restaurant so we had to try it. The restaurant itself was buzzing with two different dining rooms and an outdoor seating area as well. You place your order at the counter and they'll deliver the food when it's ready. We tried the fish and chips and the soup of the day which was cod chowder. This soup was perfectly seasoned and tasted just like the New England style clam chowder I know and love. It was thick (but not too thick) and packed with delicious flavor. The fish and chips - which was perfectly battered and fried - came out piping hot, was generous in size and large enough to share between two of us. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and look forward to coming back again and eating outside in warmer weather.

Well done proper fish, not only have you brought your restaurant back up to the standard we've loved since you were a food truck (yes I know ownership changed and it took a minute to get back to it) But the service was quick without feeling rushed, they themselves found us a table (in the new bar area, its 18+ but they were nice enough to let our 16 through) The food was perfect, crispy yet moist fish that was bigger than the basket, lots of their glorious fries and a scoop of mushy minty peas (really wish I got more of this its just that good) Love it will be back as always!

Yummm for their fish and chips. I came here with my family after walking around and exploring on a Sunday afternoon. The place is small and it was too cold to sit outside. I had to sit at a small table with my daughter because she was sleeping on the stroller while my group sat at a bigger table in the back. I ordered the fish and chips and it was delicious! Piping hot, crispy and flaky. No complaints at all. The portion was a good size(I couldn't finish but my brother came by to help). I really enjoyed the peas that I initially thought was guac haha. If I'm ever visiting Bainbridge, I'd definitely stop by for a quick bite.

Proper Fish is one of those true masters of fish and chips; they really have The Craft down. This version has a Northwest twist, which is still great overall, especially with the mushy peas served with the fish and chips--that was the best choice. You don't see that anywhere else, and this place has moved into one of my new top five fish-and-chip joints. No need to explain what I already ordered; we just happened to come here on a random trip. Figured we'd check it out before we catch the ferry to Seattle, stop over here at Proper Fish. Next time, I want to ask for mushy peas because I like my veggies. I know most people don't like veggies, I get it--I need a little more of those mushy peas.

The restaurant is a little small and staff is very friendly. Ordered the fish and chips and clam chowder. -fish and chips: came out hot and was so tasty, the portion is generous. you can definitely split between two people and leave full. fish was crispy but light, it wasn't oily at all. pea mash complimented the fish and was refreshing. the fries were thick and very filling -clam chowder: delicious and very warming, perfect for when it's cold and raining. I enjoyed eating this with the oyster crackers added on top for some extra texture

Fish was pretty darn good, chowder was more "meh". Huge portion of fish though! We shared one piece since we'd been stuffing ourselves all day. Not a lot of indoor seating, but plenty of outdoor seats for a warm day. Quick service!

This was a great meal. There is very limited seating in their main restaurant, but there is additional seating in the bar area. The fish was super tender and fried to perfection. It was a very large portion. The mushy peas were something fun and new to try. The food came out much quicker than we were told it would take. The cod chowder was also something new I've never had. Tastes pretty similar to normal chowder but flakier meat. I would come back again.

It was such a beautiful day at Bainbridge Island, after taking the ferry my husband and I were met with his friend. He asked where we wanted to go and after checking out some Tiktok suggestions I decided that we were going to have an early dinner at Proper Fish. Proper Fish can get proper busy, you order your food at the register and find seats either inside their main restaurant, the bar or outside. We were lucky enough to get seats outside, we were so thankful that it wasn't rainy but it was still pretty chilly. My husband and his friend order the British fish and chips while my husband ordered fried oysters, I also ordered the chowder. We got our number and put it on the table and our food came out pretty fast. The chowder was exactly what I needed to stay warm, it was so delicious and creamy and filled with so much cod. When the fish and chips came out I was absolutely shocked with how huge my fillet was, it was crispy and flaky and still so moist and it was so tender. The fish was so delicious and the chips were big and fluffy on the inside. I typically don't like minty peas, I've had some in the UK and was not fan but these were actually really good. Now the oysters, I am not a fan but my husband really liked it. I just thought it was too wet lol. Please please please come and check them out.

We were very satisfied with our meal at Proper Fish. As tourists just passing through, we struck gold finding this gem. The fish and chips are worth every penny! Perfectly battered, not too heavy, hot and crisp. The fish itself was flaky and moist. The lobster roll was described as the best I have ever had by another member in our party. Pricey but also worth the cost. The servers were friendly and attentive. The restaurant itself is small and can only seat 22 so be prepared to wait if you have a larger party. There are only two larger tables in the back.

HI LIFE is an exception, and will be a go-to going forward. The Poke sho-ka-do box is a great option for open minded first-timers. It's a huge amount of food, easily satisfying two and giving you a nice sense of the variety of fish and marinades on offer. Note that it's a fixed set, so you'll likely end up with some marinades/fish you prefer over others. The mayo-base poke wasn't my jam, but that's personal preference. One note, it'd be nice if the box included rice. it's available for $3 extra, which feels trivial. As for dining environs, it's located in a refurbished service station. There's limited indoor seating by the service counter, but most tables are under the overhang where gas pumps would have once been. I'd go at a slightly off-time if possible to ensure you get a seat! Everything we ordered was packed with flavor and well executed in this fusion restaurant. The spicy truffle wontons with grilled shrimp were a standout! They were super aromatic with the truffle flavor coming through, and the shrimp added a nice extra layer of texture and richness. The wontons were not quite spicy, however. We also tried thier chili prawn noodles, which had egg noodles and was just as good. The tempura shrimp was also crunchy and added to the great mix of textures. We also had the rockfish, which was in a nice creamy sauce and cooked nicely, complementing the rest of the meal well.

We didn't know what to order so we looked at a bunch of photos to see what looked good. We started off with the Chicken Buns. It was really good karage chicken bao buns, very flavorful, nicely prepared and the mayo was tasty! We really enjoyed this to start off our meal. As for our entrees, we got: Bun Cha Hanoi: Good amount of meats, I really liked this, comes with 2 pork patties, 2 grilled pork skewers, an egg roll, noodles to dip in the nuoc cham sauce with lettuce to make some wraps. I went to town on this! Sautee Beef Vermicelli: I got some bites to this dish as well, beef was plenty, quite flavorful stir fried beef, good marinade on the beef, comes with vermicelli noodles with some assorted veggies and crispy bits on top. A good non soup beef noodle dish! We came at a good time, we got seated pretty quickly, friendly staff, it is on the pricier side but we enjoyed the food a lot. The place got busier when we were leaving. Worth coming by to check out if you in the neighborhood!

This place is absolutely delicious in every way! Driving past, you might miss it entirely. The exterior is almost secretive (perhaps that's what they're going for). But once inside, you step into a small Italian market filled with authentic staples. You'll find imported pastas, olive oils, sparkling sodas, cured meats, olives, etc. Equal parts neighborhood pizzeria and Italian market. The owners themselves came out and greeted our table, which immediately impressed me and set the tone. This place is truly family-run. A husband and wife from Hawaii and Italy who have created something similar to the movie "Nonna". Then there's the wood-burning oven that sits glowing in the kitchen, the kind that makes that perfect blister and char. We ordered the Burrata y Speck pizza ($23). San Marzano tomatoes, whole burrata, cherry tomatoes, basil, speck, and Parmigiano. It was outstanding! The crust is PERFECTLY crisp! Funny note* Look how they shaped the pizza as a heart for us on their own....how cute! We also tried the Bruschetta, which was equally excellent. For drinks, we shared a bottle of blood orange sparkling wine, which might have been the most refreshing thing I've had all day. A couple of things worth noting: - First, like most small Italian eateries, dining here is communal as space is limited. You might get your own table, or you might end up dining along fellow pizza lovers. Roll the dice and enjoy the experience. - Second, if you order something to go at the counter, remember to pick it up before leaving. I ordered the cannoli ahead of time to take with me, and completely forgot to take them with me on the way out. My fault. My only real suggestion for Via Rosa (should they need more business) is to lean into the curb appeal a bit more. This place deserves to be discovered IMO, but right now it's so subtle from the road that many people will drive right past without even realizing what they are missing. Which would be a shame because if you stop, you'll find a tiny slice of Italy tucked away on Bainbridge Island! Will ABSOLUTELY be back. 5 stars.

Stopped in for a bite of dinner after we were torn between another local pub (near Safeway) or here. We both had such fond memories of Docs and that led us to our choice. Got seated quickly but it took kinda forever to get even water delivered much less a drink order placed. We decided to make our dinner order too because of the drink delay. Hubby was too happy that they had his fav beer - black butte porter -available so her ordered that. My Chardonnay was from WA which is not my fav but it was a choice of $11/glass or $20/glass for an overpriced, under-tasting CA option. Our dinner came almost too quickly. 3 piece fish and chips. First impression: wow, that's hardly any fries. Second impression: wow, how long have these been sitting out. You can always depend on Docs fries to be amazing but not this time. They were limp, soggy and just about inedible. We did let our waiter know and he did reorder us a batch but they came almost at the end of our dinner tho. BUT these were the fries we rave about at Docs... hot, crispy, real potatoes. Yum! Now the fish: the cod itself was perfect. Thick, fresh, hot, moist but I don't know what this 'crusting' is. It's like it's been rolled in seasoned cracker crumbs then fried sure it's crispy but it's like it's encased in edible armor. Not a fan. The batter they used to have was so superior to this. I was disappointed to be honest. Upon paying and leaving hubby says: well, we won't do that again. It's too bad because it was such a regular hangout for us with my folks who just about everyone knew by name. It's also my first time back since they passed (2021) so I really was missing them. Not the same on many levels. Even the crack sauce wasn't 'right.' I've never left any behind in the cup before...I did this time.

They didn't have enough menus for those they seat. We were initially provided one to share with apologies. Later they brought us another one. For a restaurant with these prices we would think they'd have enough menus printed for patrons. When we started to order we learned they were out of the house made bread and the marinated olives and toasted almonds. Our reservation was pretty early in the evening so, similarly to Seabird, we were dumbfounded how items like this were already not planned for well nor available with a small menu. We didn't want any other starter so moved along. I ordered the country steak bavette steak going against the risk from other reviews, but I really wanted steak. The steak was cooked med rare like requested. The steak itself was okay. The interesting part was the spread of green sauce and other did not add any flavor to the experience. It could not have been there and same difference. I can't say I'd order again. The Agate Burger was kind of dry and I would not order that again. Someone else had undercooked. Ours seemed over cooked. Like pizza, burgers are one of those items that I'm always shocked when it's not basic enjoyable. When you've made basic and delicious burgers at home, you know it would take extra work to make it unsatisfying. Everyone loves a grilled burger. Ling cod and prawns - Ling Cod was cooked REALLY well, but the overall dish lacked flavor and left you again unsatisfied. We asked to see the dessert menu (of which we were given 1), but even though it was my birthday we made the decision to skip dessert. We enjoyed dessert at home. Others seemed to have different experiences so you can decide, but it's not a cheap gamble. It was hard to ignore the glaring chipped wall right next to our table. I'm not really sure how I feel about the ambiance. Seems like a small thing, but the candle wasn't lit. Had to ask for a light. It wouldn't. Had to ask for another one to be brought. We tried really hard to improve our experience from all angles possible lol Parking - private lot. The museum is closed so you should easily find a spot.
